As Mounties pore over hundreds of documents in an investigation into possible fraud connected to the 2141 Spirit of Kamloops steam engine, city hall has been told no money is missing. However, there are still many questions that need answers, according to Doug Stewart, the city’s assistant finance director. The city brought Kamloops RCMP into the matter in March after a review of the finances for the Kamloops Heritage Railway Society raised issues that could not be explained, including the movement of $100,000 two times out of the society’s accounts. The city hired BDO

Canada to review the financial documents and, at some point during that review, questions arose that led the city to tell the reviewers to not speak with society board members again, Stewart said. That review noted the society has no documented policies and procedures, appearing to operate on “a fairly informal basis.” There were several instances in which invoices could not be found to confirm payments and the former treasurer, Joe Leong, and society board president Glenn Wideman often would pre-sign blank cheques. When KTW learned of the investigation in March, Wideman noted Leong was the board’s treasurer during the time frame that has drawn police attention, noting “there was definitely

funds taken from our bank accounts.” The review notes two payments of $100,000 made to Leong in 2011 and 2012. Wideman told BDO those were for Leong to make investments on behalf of the society through Leong’s holding company. The cheques were made out to Leong personally. The first was recorded in society records on Feb. 10, 2011, clearing the bank the same day. On May 11, 2011, an entry was made reversing the cheque payment but there was no detail attached to the documentation to confirm the money had been put back into the account. On March 26, 2012, another $100,000 cheque cleared and on May 1, 2012, paperwork noted the money was returned. “As the transactions in

the bank did not support the change in the outstanding deposits in the bank reconciliation,” the review states, “BDO reviewed the QuickBooks file and could not access the 2011 bank reconciliations; nor could we identify the reversal of the outstanding deposit.” To try to confirm the money had actually been deposited, BDO reviewed the Jan. 1, 2011, and Dec. 31, 2010, balance sheets and found further documentation that could not be explained. On Dec. 31, 2010, the balance sheet shows a positive balance of $87,346.88, yet the Jan. 1, 2011, balance sheet — just 24 hours later — shows a negative balance of $1,865.47. The review speculates some items may have been posted and reversed to earlier dates.

CE L

The review notes Wideman explaining the QuickBook files for 2010, kept on Leong’s computer, were lost in a hard-drive crash and could not be recovered. “As such, we were unable to confirm what transactions had been posted to 2010 from 2011,” the review notes. The review also notes the society records a contingency fund of $30,000 based on a line of credit. However, there is nothing in the society’s Interior Savings Credit Union statements to show a line of credit exists. RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said officers are working on the investigation, but noted it will take some time because of the number of documents that must be verified.

A 20-year-old Comox man is in critical condition after diving into shallow water in Riverside Park on the weekend. Kamloops RCMP were called to the beach at about 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 2, after the man, part of a group of young adults partying in the park, was found floating facedown in the Thompson River. Members of the group pulled him from the river and started CPR. Kamloops Fire Rescue personnel took over once they arrived at the beach, reviving the man before he was taken to Royal Inland Hospital. The man, a tree planter, is reported to have head and spinal injuries. His name has not been released.

Park your green space opinions here The city wants to develop a management plan for three riverside parks in the downtown core — and the public is invited to give input. Well-known Riverside and Pioneer parks and the lesser-know Waterfront Park between the two have no longterm management plan in place. Such a plan will recommend improvements and possible additions to the activities, resources

and amenities in the parks. The plan will be based on the input received from the community. There will be an open house on Tuesday, June 11, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., in Riverside Park near the concession building. There will be a workshop on the same day, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the Parkside Lounge at Interior Savings Centre. An online survey is at kamloops.ca to June 28.

City, firefighters’ union contract talks

Arbitrator chosen, date to be determined By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

The City of Kamloops and the local firefighters’ union have picked an arbitrator, but haven’t yet decided when they will sit down in an attempt to come to an agreement on a new contract. City CAO David Trawin said lawyers for the city and the union are exchanging information to ensure both sides are clear on each other’s position. “It’s been a while and we went back and forth. Some things are on, some things are off,” Trawin said. “So, it’s like, OK, here’s our stuff, what’s your stuff so we know what we’re going to arbitration exactly on?” The firefighters’ last contract with the City of

On The Go?

Kamloops expired on Dec. 31, 2010. The city filed an application for arbitration last summer, after failing to agree on a new contract in mediation. At that time, Kris Krutop, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 913, told KTW wages were the main sticking point in negotiations. Krutop said the union wants parity with Vancouver firefighters, which has been the norm. Trawin said the city feels it has offered parity. While firefighters have been offered the same main wage increases as Vancouver, Trawin said the city hasn’t offered offsets — wage increases that come from finding cost-saving measures in Kamloops Fire Rescue’s operations. “It’s come down to that,” he said. “We thought we offered Vancouver and

they thought they could get a better deal out of Vancouver.” Trawin said there is still a chance offsets could become part of the deal if firefighters can find places to trim KFR’s budget. While the city is without an acting fire chief due to Neill Moroz’s decision to retire in May after stepping away from the post on personal leave, Trawin said that won’t affect negotiations. However, replacing Moroz is a higher priority than negotiating a contract for 2013 and 2014, which also needs to be done, Trawin said. Kamloops isn’t the only city holding off on contract negotiations. “No one seems to be doing that in the whole province,” he said. “Everyone’s waiting for Vancouver to set the tone on this one.”

A man faces five charges in relation to the shooting of Glenn Powell earlier this month. Adam James Colligan has been charged with aggravated assault, using a restricted or prohibited firearm for a criminal organization, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, extortion using a firearm for criminal organization and breach of probation. He is in custody and will return to court on June 13. Powell, 48, was shot in his Fairview Avenue home on Saturday, ADAM JAMES May 11, COLLIGAN during a confrontation with three men he told KTW were members of the Independent Soldiers gang in the city. Powell said the men were trying to force him to sell drugs for them. He said that when one man pulled a gun on him, he fought back, was shot in the right knee and hit in the head three times with the gun. Powell said he had met the men through a tenant and had bought drugs from them once. He told KTW he knew them only as AJ and Kenny. Colligan was one of five men charged in connection with a kidnapping in Kamloops in 2011.

Yet another court adjournment A third adjournment has been granted in the case against David Peter Gordon, the man charged in the death of Cheryl William. Appearing by videoconference from the North Fraser Pretrial Centre (NFPT) in Port Coquitlam, Gordon did little more than confirm his name when the manslaughter

and arson charges were called in court on Monday, June 3. His lawyer, Chris Thompson, was granted the adjournment to Monday, June 24, to give him time to talk with the Crown and meet with his client. Earlier court dates on May 6 and May 9 were adjourned, once because Thompson

was not in the courthouse and the other because Gordon had been moved from the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre to the prison on the Coast without the court being notified. Thompson said he met with Gordon last weekend and would need to return to NFPT for additional

discussions. The charges arise from a fire in a three-suite house at 927 St. Paul St. on April 25, which left William, 44, a cook at the Sk’lep School of Excellence, unconscious in serious condition. She died on April 29 when she was removed from life support.

What council took away from FCM By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

Kamloops city councillors were headed home from the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference on Monday, June 3, after a weekend of networking, touring and workshopping. KTW caught up with a few of the eight councillors who made the trek to this year’s sessions in Vancouver to get their personal highlights. For Coun. Nelly Dever, a presentation by federal Green party Leader Elizabeth May was among the highlights. While four federal political parties were represented at the

conference, Dever called May the “most dynamic.” Dever also pointed to various tours — including one on food security she was taking as she emailed her impressions to KTW — and opportunities for social networking as highlights. Coun. Arjun Singh said a session on youth engagement was one of his standout moments. “One of the suggestions was to go to where people are at as opposed to always having a typical, boring public meeting,” he said. That could be coffee shops, workplaces or other sites where youth congregate. Singh said it appears as though a

number of city councillors in B.C. who attended the session will form an informal working group to look at the issue further. A tour of a digital media centre in Vancouver has also given Singh some new insights into the tech industry — and ideas that could be put into play in Kamloops, he said. Coun. Nancy Bepple said she was heartened to hear leaders of all political stripes are receptive to some of FCM’s main concerns. “We heard Elizabeth May, (federal NDP leader] Thomas Mulcair, [federal Liberal leader] Justin Trudeau and minister [of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Denis]

Lebel — all the major parties in Ottawa,” she said. “And they all talked about a new partnership with municipalities, which is one of the goals of FCM.” Bepple said municipalities need to have a voice when senior levels of government are drafting policies for which cities and towns eventually have to pay. For example, when the government recently decided to redraft its policies on locating cell towers, FCM was able to weigh in. Traditionally, communities haven’t had any say in where the towers end up. “That’s a one-off, but we want to just

have that same type of approach to other policies,” she said. On a personal note, Bepple said a keynote address by disabled philanthropist Rick Hansen reminded her of the importance of making the city accessible to those with mobility challenges. “His talk was just so inspiring,” she said.

Critical Illness Insurance... Is it Worth It? A critical illness can happen to anyone and everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with a critical illness – cancer, heart attack or stroke. We all think that this won’t happen to us! The Canadian Cancer Society will tell you that one in four Canadians are expected to die from cancer and that cancer is the leading cause of premature death in this country. 3,075 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer every week, there are 70,000 heart attacks and between 40,000 to 50,000 strokes annually. These statistics are frightening, as are the costs related to these critical illnesses. In recent years, medical advances have led to increased life expectancy and the ability to recover from various illnesses. Thanks to these advances, you’re much more likely to suffer a critical illness and live, then you are to die suddenly – which means financial hardship is likely what will be left behind. So, critical illness insurance – is it worth it? If you find yourself diagnosed with any of the 25 critical illnesses covered, critical illness insurance gives you the ability to focus on your recovery by eliminating the financial stress that often accompanies many of these illnesses. Your critical illness insurance can be used to pay your mortgage; look after your family or pay for those medical costs incurred that may not be covered by the government or by your employment health benefits. Yes, it is definitely worth it!

English, math, socials, basketball and y-ďŹ shing By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

There’s a basic belief that governs decisionmaking at Westsyde secondary — and at every other school in the city. If a kid is enjoying a class, it makes it easier for the student to want to be there. It makes for a happy teacher and an engaged class. At Westsyde, one of the ways that’s being done is through the creation of some unique courses — from boys’ choir to fly-fishing to astronomy. A Grade 11 sportspecific training course has been added and already is full for when class starts in the fall. Principal Sean Lamoureux explained the course builds on one

geared toward Grade 10s. The specific sport is basketball and the training at that level is all about the individual player, everything they need to understand all aspects of the game. The new course expands on that fundamental body of knowledge into team dynamics, everything from coaching to community involvement, Lamoureux said. The course was promoted by teacher Ryan Porter but the kids were involved as well, Lamoureux said. “You know, if kids are in classes they want to be in, you don’t have issues with attendance or behaviour, he said. “And, if teachers are teaching courses they want to teach, I have a

happy staff. The fly-fishing course has two blocks of students, he said, and takes them from building their own flies to creating their own rods to appreciating and learning from nature and building that essential patience skill required for the sport — and for life. Westsyde’s not the only school with unique courses. Kent Brewer of the

school district’s board authority-authorized course committee, noted many schools are designing classes that meet educational needs through subjects that go beyond the three Rs. The list is long, but includes activities like golf, hair dressing, musical theatre, videogame creation, video production, web design, rock and roll history, retail management and several offered in part-

nership with Digipen, an American tech institute. Brewer agreed with Porter that an engaged student will have better learning outcomes and offering courses that are able to do that while still meeting provincial curriculum requirements is a great way to ensure that kind of success. Westsyde’s sports course teaches analytic skills, problem-solving, body mechanics, leadership and team-building.

Tobiano targets travelling golfers By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

Pebble Beach. Bandon Dunes. Tobiano. That’s the kind of company Mike Grenier sees the Kamloops Lake golf course sharing in the not-too-distant future now that the award-winning track is out of receivership and in the hands of optimistic owners. “We’re committed to fielding a mustplay course,” Grenier told KTW. “And that means we have to be among the best in North America.” Tobiano, if you listen to the golf writers charged with compiling such lists, is already among the best courses in North America. Named Canada’s best new course when it opened in 2008, Tobiano is annually included on ScoreGolf magazine’s list of Top 10 courses in Canada and has also been named one of Rolex’s Top 1,000 courses on the planet. Grenier knows the course’s potential better than anyone. He dreamed up the idea for Tobiano

and was the developer behind the project until it went into receivership in 2011. He was not involved in Tobiano’s operations during receivership proceedings, but is now back on board as general manager under new owners John Preston of Palm Beach, Fla., and Henry Bereznicki of Edmonton— a pair of men, Grenier said, who know the market they want to reach. “They have expressed a strong desire to focus on international golf travel,” he said, noting the course will always cater to local duffers as well. “People who say, ‘Gee, I want to sample the best golf courses in Western Canada,’ then they include Tobiano with maybe Jasper and Banff, or Whistler and Tobiano.” Grenier said he hopes to build relationships with Kamloops hotels to make sure the travel golfers have a place to sleep when their round is done. Mainly, though, he’s just happy to be looking forward. “The people here, we’re all pretty happy that we’ll be able to now address the longer-term goals,” he said.

“Often what happens with receivership is a focus on cost-cutting and short-term thinking. We’re not there anymore.” The name of the company that now owns Tobiano is NA (Tobiano) Management Ltd. It bought the course out of receivership from Business Development Bank of Canada. The sale price has not been stated, but the golf course was listed in 2012 for a sale price of $5.5 million — separate from the larger Tobiano development. Preston said the plan is to build upon Tobiano’s legacy as one of Canada’s premier tracks. “We are delighted to work with Mike and advance his vision for a first-class resort course,” Preston said. Added Bereznicki, president of NA (Tobiano) Management Inc.: “Tobiano’s conditions are among the best in the world and the surrounding landscape is simply jaw-dropping — a memorable track indeed. “We look forward to working with Terry Smith, golf superintendent, and the balance of the excellent staff at Tobiano.”

BOUT 20 YEARS AGO, before the Internet became the focal point of our lives, world trends employed a slower mode of transport. News was not relayed via instantaneous tweets and photos of one’s dinner plate were not shared with the world for no discernible reason. And a visit to the mailbox often brought something more than bills and letters to a home. Many a scam was unwittingly delivered by Canada Post in the form of chain letters and other financial sleightof-hand stamped correspondence that relied on the addressee to physically undertake a few steps in order to be duped. In the past two decades, the Internet has radically altered the manner in which we live, transforming the once laborious into lightning fast — and scam artists are among the busiest online, with their clever cons milking the innocent daily. What must have taken weeks and months in the days before the World Wide Web can today be accomplished in the blink of an eye. A victim clicks on a link, suspends the basic cautionary principle of too good to be true and is out hundreds or thousands or more. Some of those scams make the news; most don’t. In Kamloops, a familiar ruse has returned with a twist — it is being done old-school style, through the mailbox. Some Kamloopsians (perhaps many) have received a white, lettersize envelope which, while bearing no return address, is indeed addressed to

CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom

MUSINGS the specific person living at the residence. Inside the envelope is information that promises the recipient easy money for undertaking a few steps as a “mystery shopper.” Included in the documents is a cheque. In the case of the correspondence pictured above, the $3,992 cheque was made out to a Kamloops-area resident. The recipient is asked to cash the cheque, visit a store (in the case of the correspondence above, Walmart is named as the store), spend a little on some shopping and fill out a survey. The recipient is then asked to send the majority of the money received when they cashed the cheque to other people, via Western Union. In this case, the recipient was asked to send $3,200 of the $3,992 to two people. And this is where the scam happens. If the victim manages to cash the cheque without a bank teller rescuing them from a poor choice, the victim will soon learn — in a few days, via the cheque bouncing back to them — they were duped and are now on the hook for the cheque’s full amount.

Meanwhile, the scam artists have escaped with most of the money while the victim can point to a few items from the store to which they were directed. This scam is just one of too many to count — online, through mailboxes and via telephone lines. There is no need for anyone to be victimized by any of these scams if we all simply ask the basic question: Does this seem too good to be true? If it does, it probably is. If, for some reason, you are not quite certain the offer you are contemplating is legitimate, take a breath and do some homework. Pay attention to the news. Anybody scammed by this latest mystery-shopper ruse is obviously not following the news as KTW, and all other media, have reported on this and other nefarious cons before. Call the local police department and ask. The Kamloops RCMP is wellversed on all manner of these scams. Go online to snopes.com. This website is invaluable in finding the truth behind plenty of questions — including whether that mystery-shopper offer is real and whether that urban legend being shared on Facebook is fake (it almost always is). If you follow these steps, you will likely never fall victim to such predatory practices. If, on the other hand, you are sitting at home right now, anxiously awaiting your millions from Nigeria after sending a deposed dictator’s nephew $10,000 to secure the release of funds, don’t say we didn’t warn you. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

In the minds of many Canadians, the purpose of the Canadian Senate is a bit of a mystery. It’s a body that’s not elected, what it accomplishes is less than clear and news about it only erupts when politicians talk about reform, or more recently, when senators play fast and loose with the purse strings of taxpayers. The original purpose of the Senate was to give a sober second thought to bills passed by elected Members of Parliament and, according to its website, to bolster underrepresented groups, such as women, aboriginals and minorities. When it comes to being a champion of aboriginal, women’s or minority rights, the Senate is perhaps the last organization that leaps to mind. As well-intentioned as the Senate was when created in 1867, today the body is effectively a patronage system for the ruling party to reward loyal and often high-profile Canadians with prestigious well-paid jobs. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has long advocated reforming Senate terms and appointment procedures or even doing away with it altogether. That hasn’t stopped him from appointing 56 Conservative senators (and two elected in Alberta) over his time in office. If Parliament can’t abolish the Senate or it accepts that it has a reason to exist, change is desperately needed. Does it make sense that New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have 10 senators each and Quebec has 24, while Alberta has six and B.C. has five? For the Senate to have credibility, rather than act as a vehicle for patronage and self-serving party loyalty, each province should have an equal number of elected senators. Senators themselves should not be sitting silent and should be seeking to reform an institution that has no accountability or credibility in terms of working in the interests of Canadians. — Black Press

God has given us the freedom to choose Editor: Re: Bill Ligertwood’s Rational Thoughts column of May 28 (‘God works in mysterious ways’): Perhaps you will remember from high school science class the statement, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I would like to paraphrase that and state that for every action there is a consequence. For example, if you pull a plant up by its roots and leave it lying on the sidewalk, the plant will die. If you are careless while handling that sharp knife, you will cut yourself. If you feed your goldfish, it will grow. If you don’t feed your goldfish, it will die. As our children were growing up, my husband and I set rules and boundaries for them, both because children need to be protected from dangerous situations and because they need to be taught they cannot do whatever they please. Then we taught them everything

they do has consequences. If they chose to disobey, for example, the consequences would be unpleasant. And we knew they would sometimes choose to disobey. If Ligertwood’s “rational thinking holds true, that means we were either unable to stop our children from disobeying (not true as we could have forced obedience through fear and cruelty) or we were malevolently glad to see them disobey, because then we could gleefully watch them suffer the consequences (also not true as we love our children and wish them no harm). How about this: We knew they would sometimes disobey. Sometimes we would even warn them of the consequences, but we still allowed them the freedom to choose so they would learn how to make choices, all the while hoping they would choose to obey out of love and respect for us. When they did make bad

choices, we honoured their choices by allowing them to suffer the consequences of their actions. This is what God does with us. He set out guidelines for behaviour, He warned us what would happen if we disobeyed and then He gave us the freedom to choose. When we disobey, there are consequences. Sometimes the consequences of our disobedience hurt only us. Sometimes — as with the victims of the recent Boston Marathon bombings — our choices hurt others as well. In any situation, God could step in and make sure no one was hurt by our choices and actions. But, if it makes no difference whether or not you feed the goldfish — if the outcome is the same no matter what you do, if there are no consequences to your actions — then there is no real freedom of choice, is there? TRU remains open for learning Enrolment in open learning at Thompson Rivers University continues to grow. A report reviewed at the Friday, May 31, TRU board of governors meeting shows a drop in on-campus students overall, but a significant jump in those in open learning. The report pegs domestic full-time equivalent (FTE) enrolment for 2013 at 6,243 students at the end of March. Last year, there were 6,401, while in 2011, there were 6,701. International FTEs as of March 31 totalled 1,588, down from the 1,635 last year, but up from the previous year, when

there were 1,503 registered. Domestic FTEs jumped to 2,931 from 2,648 last year and 2,653 the year before. International FTEs studying through open learning came to 274; last year, that number was 314, but both are well above the year before, when there were just 63. The lengthy document, at more than 40 pages, also notes an increase in the assets of the university, hitting $261.1 million, up from the year before, when the value was placed at $249.5 million. Debt has dropped to $11.9 million from $14 million last year.

In the revenue category, tuition — which the board hiked by another two per cent on Friday — has continued to grow on the revenue side of the balance sheet at the university. Total revenue has increased to $167.6 million in 2013 from $143.9 million in 2010. A highlight sheet within the report on administration and finance notes tuition has increased to $53 million this year, as of March 31, from $39.5 million in 2009. Government and grants contribution has remained fairly static: $74.2 million in 2012 and $75.3 million in 2013.

Dedication leads to award for Kamloops woman By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

Linda BonnerBrown has seen firsthand the challenges people with kidney disease face. Her husband, Don, died of the disease and she found herself determined to do whatever she could to eventually see the day when no one dies from it. That dedication led to the Kamloops woman receiving an award in May from the B.C. branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada for her work

raising awareness — and money — to help promote understanding of kidney disease and the need for organs to be donated. Bonner-Brown has become a fixture at Royal Inland Hospital, with her table of information and her willingness to answer questions. She has also created a memorial team that takes part in the annual Kidney Walk, a group of people that has tripled in size in the past three years and raised $7,000 for the cause. “As a volunteerbased grassroots orga-

To all grandparents among us — thank you very much that they were able to succeed in life by putting their mistakes behind them and looking to the future. Without us even realizing it, they illustrate the benefits of values such as respect, honesty and generosity. They also show us that a little bit of good can be done with something as small as a helping hand, a hug or a steaming hot apple pie.

We say thank you to all grandparents out there for sharing your knowledge and your loving care. It is very reassuring for children, and very useful to parents, to know they can always count on grandma and grandpa if a problem arises. The lucky ones among us have grandparents who overflow with love and with the wisdom not to judge.

At Berwick on the Park you can have it all! A truly relaxing lifestyle can start with an informational visit to Berwick on the Park. Our retirement community features numerous on-site amenities, spacious suites and friendly hospitality. Do something social, choose a great book from the library or take a stroll through our beautiful gardens. At Berwick on the Park you’re in control and truly free.

Many grandparents see family members regularly and even stay in touch on a daily basis by telephone, e-mail, Skype or Facebook. By doing this, they are able to convey a real sense of family to their offspring. By telling anecdotes about their own lives, grandparents help us to understand they aren’t perfect, either, and

Do you dream of slowing down the effects of aging? If so, you’d better get moving. No matter how old you are, it is always possible to maintain or improve your health by adding some sort of physical activity to your routine. Better balance and a higher degree of independence are among the many benefits seniors gain from exercise. Physical activity also tends to reduce the risk of falls and injury and helps prevent heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes and some forms of cancer. Best of all, it just makes people feel better. Start gradually, but aim to do at least twoand-a-half hours of moderate or intense physical activity every week. Any exercise that lasts longer than 10 minutes counts. Biking and brisk walking are considered to be moderate activities if your heart rate increases and you are capable of talking, but not singing, while you are moving. Intense physical exercise includes jogging and cross-country skiing. During this kind of activity, you need to catch your breath after a few words because of an increased heart rate. Don’t forget to strengthen your muscles and your bones with twice-weekly sessions of an activity such as stretching, yoga, walking, weightlifting, climbing stairs, sit-ups or pushups. These will invigorate your heart and mind. Get in the habit of looking for opportunities to do some exercise, whether it means going to the park with your grandchildren, walking up the stairs instead of taking an escalator, walking to and from the grocery store instead of going by car or getting off the bus a few stops from home. Even if you’re not used to it now, you’ll soon see that exercise can be a real source of enjoyment.

5. Fill up on antioxidants: Colourful fruits and vegetables are full of these compounds that protect the body’s cells and help boost the immune system. 6. Reduce your sugar intake: Sugars promote weight gain and accelerate aging of the skin. There is also some evidence that they compromise the immune system. 7. Increase your calcium intake: Calcium is essential for healthy skin and bones. 8. Manage your stress: Stress makes you look older, so aim for a balanced lifestyle through yoga, meditation, exercise and rest. 9. Protect yourself from the sun: Sun is the most important factor in aging skin and one of the main causes of skin cancer. 10. Drink a lot: Good hydration is vital for the body’s organs and for healthy-looking skin. l l

We all age a little bit every day and, like it or not, we can’t do anything about it. However, several lifestyle choices can help to slow he effects of aging: 1. Stop smoking: Cigarettes reduce a smoker’s life expectancy by about four years, not to mention the aging effects on skin, hair, and teeth. 2. Get sufficient sleep: Aim to sleep eight hours a day. Not getting enough sleep is harmful to the skin and can cause unhealthy weight gain and a grim outlook. 3. Use your memory: Don’t forget that the brain is a muscle. Give it some exercise with word games, puzzles and stimulating discussion and readings. 4. Stay active: It’s proven that exercising for 30 minutes a day improves health. Do it every day if possible.

Seniors represent more than 15 per cent of Canada’s population, according to Statistics Canada — and it’s a number projected to accelerate rapidly in the coming years as the entire Baby Boom generation ages. Many of these people are significantly affected by communication disorders and experience problems with their speech, language, swallowing, hearing or balance. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in 2002 that adult-onset hearing loss was the 15th-largest contributor to the global burden of disease. Each year, the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) dedicates the month of May to raising public awareness of communica-

tion disorders and the professionals who can help. Speech-language pathologists provide assessment; treatment and follow-up for difficulties speaking or understanding; voice problems; thinking and memory problems; and swallowing difficulties. Audiologists provide assessment, treatment and follow-up regarding hearing loss, balance problems, tinnitus (noises or ringing in the ears) and other related disorders. If you or someone you know has a communication problem or limitation, CASLPA recommends consulting a speech-language pathologist or audiologist. Early detection is vital. If you suspect a problem, information is available online at speechandhearing.ca. newscanada.com

ELDER ABUSE SEE IT, STOP IT, PREVENT IT Every day elderly people are victims of abuse. Abuse can be in the form of physical injury, financial theft, neglect or sexual assault. “Elder abuse is a problem that we must confront, said Brenda Prevost, executive director of the Centre for Seniors Information. “In B.C., one out of every 12 seniors suffers from abuse and we know that unreported cases would bring that percentage much higher. “These seniors may be a parent, a grandparent, a neighbour or a loved one. “Victims of abuse often feel powerless and alone, Prevost said. “They don’t know where to turn or to whom to go for help. So, please, remember what we have all been taught — to respect our elders. Together, we can make a difference. If you think you know someone who is being neglected, exploited or abused, there is help available. For more information about how to recognize the signs of abuse or to get help for someone you believe may be a victim of abuse, call the Centre for Seniors Information at 250-554-4145.

All calls are treated with confidentiality. The majority of elder abuse is either unnoticed or under-reported. This is largely due to people not recognizing the signs of abuse, not wanting to accept the facts regarding how frequently abuse of seniors occurs and/or being uncertain or fearful about reporting known or suspected abuse. Elder abuse includes: • Physical abuse, such as slapping, pushing, beating or forced confinement; • Financial abuse, such as stealing, fraud, extortion and misusing a power of attorney; • Sexual abuse, including sexual assault or any unwanted form of sexual activity; • Neglect as in failing to give an older person in your care food, medical attention or other necessary care, or abandoning an older person in your care; • Mental abuse as in treating an older person like a child and humiliating, insulting, frightening, threatening or ignoring an older person. Elder abuse can also be a crime under the Criminal Code of Canada. Financial abuse is reported most frequently.

SENIORS WEEK

B.C.’s best senior athletes on their way to Kamloops The wait is over for senior-aged athletes in and around the Kamloops region. Kamloops will host the 2013 BC Seniors Games from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24. “We’ve been trying to get a seniors’ Games here since 2007, but it just wasn’t the right time,” said Sean Smith, Tournament Capital co-ordinator for the city. “They’ve been putting a bid in for quite a while and I’m so pleased they’ve got it this time,” said June Parsons, president of the B.C. Seniors Games Society. “It is extremely competitive.” Parsons said the Games will bring about 4,000 athletes and visitors to Kamloops. The tourists will make an economic impact of about $2 million on the city, Parsons said, noting that number is a conservative estimate. Kamloops will play host to 25 sports at the Games: • Cycling (road) • Archery • Tennis • Ice hockey • Swimming • Track and field • Slo-pitch • Ice curling • Golf • Floor curling

“So there you have the unvarnished truth. My hat is permanently off to the Strauss Herb Company.” Dear Strauss Herb Company, In 2005 my husband suffered a colossal heart attack that went on for 1 ½ hours. His heart was oversized and after the attack was sloppy and a heart transplant was spoken of. 25% of his heart died off. So he had the usual; a 6 bypass operation and 2 angioplasties thrown in for good measure. After 2 weeks he was discharged and I brought home a barely living corpse. Month after month went by with no great improvement and at 8 months, he suffered severe heart failure, requiring hospitalization to remove the Àuids. His legs swelled to the size of elephant’s legs. He looked miserable and felt life had nothing more to offer him than a slow excruciating death. His legs were ice cold to the knees as well. It was at this time a friend came to the rescue. She sized up the situation and showed me this miracle. I went out the next day a bought a bottle of

Heartdrops. I marked on the calendar when we started and lo and behold, day 14 was THE day of improvement! His legs were warm!!!! His circulation was back! We literally danced around the kitchen. Willi has been taking this wonderful product 4 years now. They wanted to operate again and give him a de¿brillator and this product regulated the beat. The amount of energy this product has given him is stupendous. He works daily in the garage, plying his hobby, sausage making. He works in the garden, cuts the grass, moves heavy object around… I can’t say enough about this product. Over time, we threw away 7 prescription medications that did nothing for him but made things worse. Today he takes 1 pill a day to slow down the heart and his good health comes from Strauss Heartdrops®! I’m not stupid either, I take them everyday to PREVENT these problems. I tell everyone who will stand still about this miracle. I ¿nd it strange how many people suspiciously eye this harmless product and refuse even to consider taking it. And yet they swallow everything the doctor writes prescriptions for without batting an eyelid and continue receiving more and more doctor advised poisons and keep becoming more sick but they never get the message. Oh yes, Willi is 70 years old. So there you have the unvarnished truth. My hat is permanently off to the Strauss Company.

LOCAL NEWS

June brings gun amnesty Police in B.C. have declared June gun-amnesty month. During any other time, police have the discretion to recommend charges if a gun surrendered to them was illegally owned. Any gun handed in that was used in a crime will not be subject to the amnesty, however. The program was last run in the province in 2006, when more than 3,200 guns were turned over, including 505 handguns, 725 other weapons, 96,500 rounds of ammunition, a rocket launcher and a machine gun. Imitation and pellet weapons, pepper spray and knives will also be accepted, along with registered guns. To turn in weapons, people can call the Kamloops detachment at 250-828-3000. They are not to take them to the Battle Street detachment. Police want to handle it in this manner to ensure people are not travelling with the weapons and that retrieval is done in a safe manner.

WHAT SHOULD BE HANDED IN? What types of firearms and weapons might be handed in during the amnesty? • Registered firearms that are no longer wanted by the owner. • Prohibited and restricted firearms and weapons, prohibited devices and prohibited ammunition as these are defined in the Criminal Code of Canada. • Firearms that have been inherited from a deceased family member and are no longer wanted. • Firearms that have never been registered under current firearms law, including handguns, rifles and shotguns. • Imitation firearms that are not required to be registered, but still pose a danger as they are difficult to distinguish from a real gun. • Other dangerous weapons — such as pepper spray, knives and pellet weapons — will also be accepted under the amnesty.

HEYENNE Betz is a trailblazer. The second-degree black belt will become the first person from Kamloops to compete at the Taekwondo International (TKDI) World Championships, set to run from Friday, July 12, to Sunday, July 14, in Coventry, England. “I used to see other black belts who were going and, when I was little, it was, ‘Oh, I wish I could be them,’” said Betz, a 15-year-old South Kamloops secondary student. “It’s pretty amazing and it’s a great honour to go there and represent Canada.” Betz will be competing for Taekwondo International Canada in the 14- to 17-year-old junior division at the event, which will be held inside SkyDome Arena, a 3,000-seat multi-purpose venue in Coventry. She qualified by winning gold in sparring at the TKDI Canadian Open Championships, held in Kelowna on April 27. It was the second national gold medal for Betz. Kamloops Martial

Arts (KMA) instructor Robert Gill — Betz’s longtime mentor — will also make the trip to England. “We’ve had four Canadian champions at the school [formerly known as Thompson Valley Taekwon-Do] and now we have one that has the opportunity to go further,” Gill said. “Cheyenne knows what it takes to win. I have a student that’s very, very coachable.” Gill and Betz need help getting across the pond, with the trip expected to cost about $5,000. There are sponsorship packages available. Call the KMA instructor at 778-471-5770 for more information. For Gill, making contacts in the international taekwondo community will be a priority. “Those connections in the UK and Europe are key,” he said. “When we have an invitational here, we send invitations to them, and vice-versa.” At 15, Betz’s résumé is already impressive. The horse lover who lives in Cherry Creek has won gold at five B.C. championships, in both patterns and sparring, and is a threetime Western Canadian champion, to go along with the aforementioned

gold medals on the national stage. Gill said this trip will be all about experiencing international competition, but he is not counting his student out of medal contention. “A master in Kelowna, Master [Dan] Zaleski, and his son are world champions and they say [Betz] has what it takes at that level,” Gill said. Experiencing new culture will likely be a thrill for Betz, who has never been outside Canadian borders, but chasing gold will take precedent over any sightseeing ventures. “It’s all about the competition,” Betz said. “After that, it’s all about the fun.” First, she needs help getting there. “I don’t have a message [to potential sponsors], just that it’s not only helping me, but kids in the future,” Betz said. “They will look up and see me go and, if they see that, they will want to strive to be better.” Kamloops Martial Arts instructor Robert Gill (left) and student Cheyenne Betz are preparing for the Taekwondo International World Championships, set to run from Friday, July 12, to Sunday, July 14, in Coventry, England. Bozon reacts to signing with Habs By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

Tim Bozon signing last week with the Montreal Canadiens came as a surprise to many, but the Kamloops Blazer forward certainly wasn’t shocked when he

found out. “That was my goal, to sign this summer,” Bozon told KTW from Lugano, Switzerland on Monday, June 3. “I thought I had a good year. Obviously, I know that usually players sign in their second

year, but Montreal wanted this summer, so I was happy to get that done before next season starts.” The man of many languages — he speaks four of them, English, French, German and Italian — was drafted

by the Habs in the third round, 64th overall, of the 2012 NHL Draft last June in Pittsburgh. Montreal could have waited until June 2014 to sign Bozon before losing his rights, giving scouts and general manager Marc Bergevin another

Western Hockey League season to track his progress. Instead, the Canadiens signed him to a three-year contract on Thursday, May 30. As per club policy, the financial terms were not disclosed. X See BOZON A18

Friends, colleagues remember Hill By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

Many associated with the Kamloops Blazers are mourning the loss of off-ice official Jim Hill, who died on the morning of Monday, June 3. “I really enjoyed working with Jim,” said Bill O’Donovan, the Western Hockey League club’s publicaddress announcer. “I sat beside him down in the timekeepers’ box for the last six seasons. He took his responsibilities very seriously but, at the same time, we could have a laugh about some things.” He was 70. Hill had a heart condition and was expected to have surgery to repair the problem later this month. He was apparently planning to take his new motorbike on a road trip later this summer. After moving to Kamloops with wife

Noreen in 1990, Hill started working for the Blazers as an usher at Memorial Arena. When the Blue and Orange moved into Riverside Coliseum (now Interior Savings Centre) in 1992, Hill began working security by the entrance to the Blazers’ bench. He later became an off-ice official, looking after the visitors’ penalty box before becoming a timekeeper, his role for the past eight seasons. O’Donovan has fond memories of Hill’s performances in skits that were played on the big screen at ISC. The short, humorous clips often poked fun at other B.C. Division squads. “He could sometimes be a little gruff about things, but he really was a big teddy bear,” O’Donovan said. “It will be really strange working without him. “One of the rou-

The Blazers’ off-ice official team has now lost two of its members in recent years, with Fred Nicolson having died after a short battle with cancer in 2011. He too was 70. After Nicolson died,

Hill payed tribute to his longtime friend by wearing his name tag. “Jim didn’t miss very many games,” O’Donovan said. “He took great interest in what he did.”

Rattlers take gold at White Rock tourney The Kamloops Rattlers had a perfect weekend and were rewarded with the A2 championship title at the 27th annual Wayne Goss Peewee Tournament in White Rock. The Rattlers opened the round-robin on Friday, May 31, with a 4-3 victory over the Cowichan Valley Thunder. The Rattlers followed that up on Saturday, June 1, with a 15-8 triumph over the host Semiahmoo Rock and an 11-5 win over the New Westminster Salmonbellies. The Rattlers met Semiahmoo again on Sunday, June 2, for the tourney championship and took the trophy with a 10-4 victory. Kamloops wraps its Thompson Okanagan league schedule this weekend on the road, taking on Kelowna on Saturday, June 8, and North Okanagan in Armstrong on Sunday, June 9.

Bozon says signing earlier eases pressure X From A17

The 19-year-old Frenchman, who also holds a U.S. passport, racked up 91 points, 36 of them goals, in regular-season play last season with the Blue and Orange. He was selected to play for France at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, held

last month in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland. Bozon, the son of former NHLer Philippe Bozon, notched one assist in five games. Colin Smith of the Blazers was drafted in the seventh round last June by the

Colorado Avalanche. He is not yet signed. “Signing now takes a lot of pressure off me,” said Bozon, who Kamloops selected 27th overall in the 2011 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. “I’m going into my third and probably last season in Kamloops knowing that I

have a contract, so my goals are going to be to get better without thinking about points. “I’m also going to focus on being a leader and helping the young guys. For sure, I’ll have less pressure. I just want to improve in the areas I need to work on and keep doing what I do best.”

Zone 8 counts down to the . . .

2013 BC SENIORS GAMES

slo-pitch By Sarah MacMillan SPECIAL TO KTW editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

Bob Reid is a Kamloops resident who enjoys a good ball game. “I’ve always loved to play ball, said Reid, Zone 8 slo-pitch coordinator. However, a competitive baseball game can be physically and mentally demanding, as well as dangerous. “Baseball is more demanding than hockey, said Reid, “And you get more injuries starting and stopping. That is why Reid recommends the game of slo-pitch to anyone who loves to play a good ball game, but wants one a little safer than baseball. “The rules have changed somewhat, for the safety of the players, Reid said. During ski-pitch at the BC Seniors Games, there is no sliding, a minimum amount of tagging and substitute runners are also available. The pitching is also slower. “The pitch is lobbed, said Reid. However, he added, the game can still be competitive. “The competitiveness is there as much as you want it to be. The level of competitiveness

Kamloops will host the 2013 BC Seniors Games from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24, 2013.The city is expecting more than 3,500 athletes, ages 55 and up, to attend the Games, which will feature 25 events, ranging from cribbage to ice hockey. The BC Seniors Games Society is a volunteer non-profit society funded by the provincial government and in co-operation with the BC Games Society, which event manages the Games. Kamloops can expect an economic impact from the Games of more than $2 million. KTW continues its biweekly feature page, with each page focusing on one of the Games’ events.

also affects the physical demands of the games. “I find slo-pitch can be physically demanding depending on competitiveness, said Reid. However, in the Games, the physical strain of slo-pitch is somewhat decreased as the number of games played by one team per day is limited to two. Within the Games, each zone is able to send a total of seven teams — usually one for each age category. The teams are divided into three events, which consist of men’s, women’s and mixed. However, though slo-pitch is a team sport, a person can enter the Games as an individual. “You can enter as a team or make yourself enter as an individual, said Reid. “As an individual, you may get to play for another zone. The teams entered play a roundrobin tournament and medals are awarded at the end to the coaches, players and managers of the top three teams in each category. For more information about slo-pitch or to participate in the Games, contact Reid by phone at 250-376-7704, by email at robertreid55@hotmail.com or visit the BC Senior Games website at bcseniorsgames.org.

Woods set to put on a show in Kamloops By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

Scott Woods is not above sacrificing his own personal well-being to keep a crowd entertained. Call him Meadowlark Lemon with a fiddle. When he takes to the stage in Kamloops on Friday, June 7, Woods will do somersaults, play behind his back and stand on one leg. But, trick fiddling is just a small part of the show. “We’ve been doing this now the last 25 years, coming across the western part of Canada,” Woods said on the phone from Athabasca, Alta., while unpacking gear ahead of a show. “And, every year, we have a brand-new show.” For 2013, that new show is called Swingin’ Fiddles. “You’re going to hear the big-band and pop standards,” Woods said. “It’s a very unique sound — very catchy melodies and interesting, complex chord progression.” Woods said the four-person band — Woods, Ben Norris on fiddle and guitar, Emily Yarascavitch on fiddle and mandolin and Carolyn Woods on piano — has been on tour since early April. “We’ve been having a really good response all across Canada,” he said. “It’s been a very well-received show.” Yarascavitch, 19, is the only band member on tour who is not related to Woods. Norris is the frontman’s nephew and Carolyn, on piano, is his mom. Another family member is also making the trek across the country, but you won’t see her on stage. Harmony is Woods’ one-year-old flatcoated retriever. “If you go to the show, you might see her sitting at the front of the bus looking out the window,” he said. X See FIDDLE B3

Project X bringing back improv night — again “Is there a better way to celebrate the first weekend of summer in Kamloops than by sitting in an air-conditioned heritage church, drinking a cold beer and laughing your face off?” That’s how Project X is promoting its latest improv night — the third so far this year — in emails to local media. It sounds pretty appealing. The latest show is slated for Saturday, June 22, inside the aforementioned air-conditioned St. Andrews on the Square. The list of performers will include Devon McBride, Harmony Maher, Robin O’Reilly and Sheanna James. There will also be special guests, according to the email, who will apparently remain secret until showtime. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with

Become more comfortable conversing about wine by increasing your terminology range. Start by learning about the senses of taste and smell.

Our sense of smell is an olfactory sensation which can discern quite a bit more territory. Smell is the most important part of wine tasting. While you can only perceive four tastes it is possible for some people to identify more than two thousand different scents. Wine has more than twohundred of its own. Now that you have swirled the wine and released the bouquet, smell the wine, and do so at least three times. You will find that the third smell will give you more information than the first. You may smell tropical fruit, and rose petals or maybe broiled steak. On a final note here’s how to become a 60-second expert.

Take a sip and swirl it around in your mouth for ten seconds, then swallow. Taste is relatively straight forward. For the first zero to fifteen seconds When a person with wine knowledge note if there is any residual sugar/ talks on till your eyes glass over, take sweetness. If there is no sweetness control of the conversation and tell him the acidity is usually at its strongest that his tongue has more than 4,000 at this point. For the next fifteen to taste buds and there are a scattering thirty seconds look for fruit sensation of other taste buds along the sides and and whether the wine is light, medium roof of his mouth, and each taste bud or full-bodied. During the next possesses 50-100 interceptor cells. thirty to forty-five seconds decide When he becomes taciturn, tell him on the balance of the fruit, acid and that despite all this mouth architecture sweetness. And, finally, for the fortyhis mouth picks out only four defined five to sixty seconds concentrate on taste sensations. Yes, in truth the the “length” of the wine – how long human mouth can only detect four the components, balance, and flavour distinct flavours - sweet, sour, bitter and continue in the mouth. salty. But there is no salt in wine so we are down to three. Bitterness in wine is Jake Ootes is owner of Celista usually created by high alcohol and high Estate Winery on the North Shore of tannin. Sweetness occurs only in wines Shuswap Lake, 2319 Beguelin Road, that have some residual sugar left over Celista, and can be reached at www.celistawine.com or check us out after fermentation. Even though all of us love to drink this wonderful nectar with dinner or as a sipper at a social function, we need to realize how little we know about the language of wine. The people with wine knowledge have come to understand the make-up, the subtleties, the beauty of wine and use terminology to provide precise descriptions.

Sweetness is best detected on the tip of the tongue. Bitterness is tasted on the back of the tongue and acidity is found on the sides of the tongue, the cheek area, and the back of the throat. Tannin is the sensation of dryness but remember tannin is not a taste, it is a tactile sensation.

All of us have experienced the wine expert who talks about the characteristics of a particular wine – the flavour, the aroma, the bouquet, seductive with great legs, big-fullheavy. It’s enough to wonder how you can begin to understand what he is talking about. He’s likely someone who has taken a keen interest in oenology (the study of wine) and learned to use specific descriptors and words, just like someone who has a keen interest in art or automobile restoration who uses specific words, acronyms, language.

Last week I got to test drive the 2012 DODGE RAM 3500 LONGHORN. This 4X4 truck is massive, powerful and can tow up to 30,000 pounds . I loved the added features that the dealership has done to the truck such as the level kit and huge tires to give it more of an off road look. The diesel engine is impressively quiet and drove very smooth for such a large truck. Inside was comfortable and it had good visibility. Having the satellite radio came in handy when finding something for my son to listen to, and I loved having the hands-free phone while driving.

Now it’s your turn! Come test drive it yourself!

XV fits in nicely at Subaru By Rob Beintema METROLAND MEDIA wheelstalk.com

I

HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I DIDN’T GET IT AT FIRST. In the spring of 2012, I watched them pull the sheet off the new 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek at the New York Auto Show. The 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek, now at Canadian dealers, is a five-door, five-passenger vehicle based on the Impreza compact sedan platform. It follows the current crossover recipe, designed to blend all-wheel drive abilities and SUV-like utility and attitude — with the ride, handling and fuelefficiency of a family car. And those of you in the know will recognize all of those ingredients as being part of something very similar — the Subaru Forester. But, what at first seemed like a duplication of effort really began to make sense once I thought about it. Because over the past 15 years, the Forester — Subaru’s very first crossover — has matured and grown in both size and sophistication, shifting into the midsize market and offering an increasing amount of interior room and comfort, standard 2.5-litre motor and optional 2.0-litre turbo-powered engine choices along with a wide variety of trim levels, technologies and equipment packages. They say nature abhors a vacuum. Well, it looks like car companies do, too. So, with Forester moving steadily up the evolutionary ladder, Subaru was able to slot a new entrylevel crossover into the bottom of the lineup. Word is that the XV (for Crossover Vehicle) was actually designed for the tighter confines of European roads. Those continental customers have begun to belatedly jump onto the utility bandwagon. But, North American dealers took one look at this perky new little crossover and also started pleading for a chance to sell it. That is why Subaru Canada is offering the XV (with the added Crosstrek name), in the fast-growing compact-crossover segment, promising, in its words, “best-in-class fuel economy, everyday comfort, exceptional safety standards and the most indemand convenience and entertainment features.” The 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek starts with all the right stuff — Subaru’s trademark mix of symmetrical full-time all-wheel-drive, a standard independent suspension and the advantages of a low centre of gravity boxer engine layout. It’s not unfair to think of the XV Crosstrek as a jacked-up Impreza and, indeed, the 220 millimetres of ground clearance is higher than most other crossovers — even higher than some full-blown SUVs. But, following the old Outback formula, the XV Crosstrek further separates itself from Impreza sedans and hatchbacks with rugged styling accents — black side- and wheel-arch cladding, a black rocker spoiler and standard black roof rails that all contrast with the body colour. The front and rear bumpers, along with the front grille, are unique to the Subaru XV Crosstrek. Dark-tint privacy glass comes standard, and the vehicle’s macho attitude is completed with uniquely designed, high relief 17-inch alloy wheels that can’t be missed. The final look-at-me shout for this lineup is the Tangerine Orange model, an over-the-top colour that adds a little fun and zest to the lineup. Inside, passengers will find adequate room for five, extra comfort for four. The interior is pretty well standard-issue Impreza with all the usual sensible switching and instrumentation augmented by a 4.3-inch colour

Looking good from any angle, the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek comes standard with black roof bars, a body-coloured spoiler and a host of included features, and the centre console (left) offers more of the same simplicity Subaru drivers have come to love.

EVENT multi-function display in the centre of the dashboard. Luggage room is rated at 632 litres (1,470 litres with the standard 60/40-split rear seatbacks folded) and the cargo area come equipped with a standard retractable cover, along with tie-down and grocerybag hooks. The XV Crosstrek harnesses an FB 2.0-litre DOHC boxer engine that makes 148 horse power at 6,200 r.p.m. and 145 pound-feet of peak torque at 4,200 r.p.m. This engine has been tweaked to maximize performance and output and it even offers a 680kilogram tow rating. It gets the job done, but don’t expect neck-snapping acceleration. Fuel economy is rated at 8.2/6.0L/100km (city/ hwy) but, as usual, you should take those numbers with a grain of salt. A more exacting American EPA rating comes in a 9.4/7.1L/100km. X See XV CROSSTREK B8

Huge Savings on 2012 and 2013 Executive Demo’s Low KM’s Mercedes-Benz Models

The BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe is a one-off study that combined the best of BMW and one of the world’s great coachbuilders, Pininfarina.

Now that’s a rare car BMW and Pininfarina are two of the most tradition-swathed names in the motoring world. Each is a synonym for cuttingedge technology, style, dynamics and aesthetics. With the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe, the two time-honoured companies have unveiled the outcome of their first collaboration at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013. The BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe is a one-off and represents the exclusive interpretation of a luxurious BMW coupe as seen through the eyes of Pininfarina. Working in close consultation, the two design teams have created a new automotive persona brimming with character and ready to join the highend luxury class — typically BMW while sporting the distinctive signature of Pininfarina. With the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe, the BMW design team

took up exclusive design aspects such as luxury and elegance and fed them into a creative exchange with longestablished specialist car designer and manufacturer Pininfarina. Pininfarina ranks as one of the most respected names in automotive design. What began in the 1930s as a carrozzeria building one-offs and limited editions, alongside the visual refinement of high-end automotive technology, has today become one of Italy’s leading design companies. Its operating spectrum stretches far beyond automobiles to include product and industrial design. Through numerous collaborations with a wide range of carmakers, Pininfarina has established itself as a style-defining partner. Simplicity and harmony in look and feel, perfect proportions and innovative functionality are the hallmarks and underlying concept of each and every Pininfarina design.

Impala 2.5L efficient, quiet, powerful Drivers of the Canadian-built 2014 Cevrolet Impala will enjoy sweet sounds and sweeter savings at the pump thanks to precision noise reduction and a new advanced valvetrain technology on the Ecotec 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Chevrolet expects the 2.5-litre model to be a popular choice among Impala buyers. More than two-thirds of Chevrolet cars sold in North America in the first quarter of 2013 had a four-cylinder engine. Chevrolet expects its new flagship sedan to be more fuel-efficient, due in part to the 2.5litre engine’s Intake valve-lift control technology. In older engines, valves operate strictly based on mechanical camshaft rotation, opening and closing the

same way all the time. Chevy’s new system allows the valves to open and close by varied amounts and at different times, depending on power demand, to provide greater fuel efficiency or power. When the technology operates in low-lift mode, the engine pumps only the air it needs to meet the driver’s demand. The system switches to high-lift mode at higher engine speeds or under heavy loads, providing the full output capability of the engine. Impala’s 2.5L engine, which delivers SAE-certified 196 horse power and 186 poundfeet of torque, achieves variable valve lift using

an all-new rocker arm that switches between low and high lift intake cam profiles. The mechanism is actuated by an oilcontrol valve through a dual-feed stationary hydraulic lash adjuster. It is the first of its kind for low friction roller-type fingerfollower valve trains in gasoline engines. The engine’s computer continuously selects the optimal lift profile based on conditions such as engine speed and load. Impala offers three fuel-efficient powertrains, including the 3.6litre V6, the new Ecotec 2.5-litre four-cylinder and the Ecotec 2.4-litre with eAssist.

And, after 500 kilometres of mixed driving, I refuelled with 46 litres of gas for a real world combined average of 9.2L/100km. The 2.0-litre engine transmits power through a standard five-speed manual transmission or an available secondgeneration Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). I would probably pick the five-speed manual for performance fun and the CVT for a slight edge on fuel economy, although the CVT does compensate with a simulated 6-speed manual mode operated via steeringwheel paddle shifters. When things got tough in the equipment business the Big Hydro dams were being built and it was off to the Peace (Bennett) and Mica Dams. When the dams were done and construction was slow it was off to Iran and Ecuador to pipeline.

We all have one long, last trip to make. Glenn started out on his on May 28th, 2013.

In between the construction work, as it was seasonal. He then found time to build and rent out several commercial industrial type buildings in Kamloops and work at restoring old cars.

Glenn leaves behind his beloved partner and friend Peggy Irwin with whom he spent the last 22 years.

In 1980 he completed his 3rd old car (a 1937 Plymouth convertible) that he and Mom took on a cross Canada tour and back.

Predeceased by Evelyn, from their union, Glenn leaves behind 4 children; Jay (Sue Adams), Kathryn (Greg Morton), Dale ( Maggie ), Gary (Leslie ) and 7 grandchildren Meghan (Kyle Rutledge), Lauryn, Stuart, Victoria , Jana (James Walsh), Tawnya, Jamie. The hardest question to answer is what did Dad do for a living? He grew up in Hope during the Depression and the war years delivering groceries by bike and driving at a young age for his fathers expanding freight truck and busing company. Shortly after the war the trucking company was sold and the Basque Ranch and other holdings were acquired in the Spences Bridge/Ashcroft area. Putting in motion a favorite period of his life from the memories and stories he told involving ranching and agriculture. Enough so that he even went back to school and took some agriculture courses at UBC. During this time he met Ev and started a family. The ranch was sold about the same time as the #1 Canyon Highway was being built. The Stetson was traded in for a hardhat and he worked for the larger road builders of the day and became a member of the Operating Engineers. Then onto using his own ‘dozers’ with the contractors and being enabled to build a new house in Spences Bridge, only to have the Dept. of Highways decide in 1959 that, that was where the new road should go. The house was cut in two and hauled to Kamloops.

In a few short years he built another motel, Riverland Motel and a year later he added 30 rooms to it. During the time of the motel construction he lost Mom (Ev) to cancer, but luckily for him Peggy came along one day selling bedspreads and draperies. And he found someone who enjoyed his passion for traveling and old cars! Then he jumped in with the action of the day and built a 24 unit strata complex . He then acquired the aging Travelodge Motel and took on the challenge of not just renovating but totally rebuilding it while operating it at the same time as well as building a new home at Sun Rivers with a garage to house all his now 5 vintage cars and two classic cars.

You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place, No one else will ever fill. It broke our hearts to lose you,

A Celebration of Life will be held June 6th at 11am : Colombo Lodge, 814 Lorne Street, Kamloops. In lieu of flowers donations to the Kamloops Hospice Association 72 Whiteshield Crescent South, Kamloops BC V2E 2S9 would be appreciated or a charity of your choice in Glenn’s name.

But you didn’t go alone. Part of us went with you, The day God took you home.

Love always Diane & Family

Rise Up Slowly . . .

With great sadness, we announce the passing of George C. Ribarics on May 24th, 2013.

Rise up slowly, Angel. Do not leave me here, alone, Where the warmth of mortal essence Lies replaced by cold, hard stone.

Wrap me in a downy cape Of sunshine, warm with love, And kiss a tear-stained mother’s face With moonlight from above.

Rise up slowly, Angel. I cannot let you go. Just drift softly ‘midst the faces, In sorrow now bent low.

Speak to me in breezes, Whispered through the drying leaves, And caress my brow with raindrops Filtered by the sheltering trees.

Then, wait for me at sunset, Beside the lily pond, And guide me safely homeward To your world, which lies beyond.

Ease the searing anger, ..... Born in harsh, unyielding truth That Death could steal my loved one From the glowing blush of youth.

Rise up slowly, Angel, For I cannot hear the song Which calls you through the shadows Into the light beyond.

Just spread your arms to take me In reunion’s sweet embrace, And we shall soar, together, To a different time and place.

He is survived by his loving wife Darlene, children Zack and Melanie, granddaughter Grace and mother Doreen.

Condolences may be sent to the family from kamloopsfuneralhome.com

If love alone could’ve saved you,

Thank you to all the nurses and volunteers at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice for your care and comfort given to Glenn. Thank you to Dr. Paul Farrell for his support.

1951 ~ 2013

A million times we’ve cried.

Glenn Gallagher and the tomatoes he loved to grow will be greatly missed by all !!!

GEORGE C. RIBARICS

Arrangements entrusted to

yz A million times we’ve needed you,

He was a charter member of the Kamloops Lions Club and Kamloops Vintage Car Club.

He then got involved with his brother Lloyd in low bedding and dealing in used trucks and equipment. Out of these dealings came his first two vintage cars (they sat for a while but started a life long hobby) a 1929 Pierce Arrow and 1938 Chevrolet.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory can be made the Children’s Hospital or Canuck Place in Vancouver, or the Kamloops Salvation Army.

January 6, 1935 - June 1, 2012

In 1985 he worked his last Local 115 job and got the big idea to build the first new motel to be built in Kamloops in 14 years, The Ranchland Motel.

In Kamloops Dad continued working with his ‘cats’ in the building of Tod Mountain (Sun Peaks).

There will be a Celebration of Life held on Friday, June 7th, 2013 at 11:00 am at Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel with Interment to follow at the Chase Cemetery at 3:00 pm.
