RIH shortlist revealed A shortlist of companies that can bid on the $79.8-million clinical-services building at Royal Inland Hospital has been determined. Nine companies responded to the request-for-qualifications issued on June 26. Ellis-Don Corporation and Bird Design-Build Construction Inc., both based in Ontario, and Graham Design Builders LP, based in Alberta, will move on to the request-for-proposals stage. The new building, to be constructed on the north side of the hospital, will include the new University of British Columbia medical school and clinical educational program, expanded outpatient services, additional parking and a walkway connecting it to the main building. Cost of construction will be shared by the province and the Thompson Regional Hospital District. Work is expected to start next spring and take two years to complete. When construction stars on the clinical-services building at Royal Inland Hospital in the fall — preparatory work is scheduled in advance of hiring
a contractor and doing the main build — the parking lot at nearby Ponderosa Lodge will be closed temporarily. Staff there will work with residents and their families to provide alternative parking during the closure period. Experts have also looked at memorial trees in the front lawn of the hospital, each planted to commemorate a person, and decided they cannot be relocated because of their size and age. In their place, an outdoor space will be created as part of the new building to re-memoralize Sonja Wilford, Ray Perrault, Colin (Cub and Victoria (Enid) McDonald, Albina (Bea) Redhead, Hannah Butts, Lorraine Biesenthal, A.R. (Bert) Wilson and departed members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 Ladies Auxiliary. Two memorial trees along Third Avenue, dedicated to Julia Black and veterans of the legion branch, will be included in the memorial garden. The Transplant Memorial Garden located behind the hospital’s electronic sign, will also be removed.

BRIDGING DANGER?
Dave Eagles/KTW
By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
For the second time in less than a week, police were called to the Overlanders Bridge area to deal with an assault. However, Kamloops RCMP Corp. Bernie Ward said the area is not considered dangerous to the public. The most recent incident led to a court appearance on Tuesday, Aug. 20, for a 27-year-old Kamloops man. Ward said the incident began at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, when a family was on the walkway close to West Victoria Street heading onto the bridge. One member of the family, a 39-year-old man, was riding a bike. Another man on a bike passed them.
“They exchanged glances, something happened, witnesses said there was no reason and we’re still investigating,” Ward said. The second man began hitting the victim with what police said was a club. Ward said an off-duty sheriff came across the scene and intervened, protecting the victim by shielding him with his own bike and holding the assailant until police arrived. The victim was treated in Royal Inland Hospital for cuts to the eyebrow area of his face. When asked if there is any link between the assault and the attack that led to the death of Michael Young on the northeast side of the bridge in late June, Ward said they don’t appear to be related. He added there is no link to an assault on Friday, Aug.

16, near the bridge. The people involved, a man and a woman, know each other, he said, and the attack was not random. Ward said police are not viewing the area as a danger to the public because it has “a high foot-traffic volume” and the bridge is as busy as a downtown street with vehicular traffic. “Every year, somebody gets into a fight on the bridge, but there is no danger to the public,” Ward said. At the time of Young’s death, KTW was told by people who knew the area where his body was found — under the bridge on a walkway to the west side — that a man had been hanging around there and always carried a bat. However, Ward said the club used in the most recent assault was nothing like a bat but a small piece of wood.

Museum Exhibit ~ The War of 1812 in the West, the Oregon Country Legacy The War of 1812 in the West, The Oregon Country Legacy: Opening September 10th at the Kamloops Museum and Archives For many, the War of 1812 happened in eastern Canada, far away from present-day British Columbia. While no battles were fought here, the war had great impact on the settlement of Western Canada and the eventual location of the international boundary. In 1812, two trading posts competed for the local fur trade in Kamloops. One was owned by the American-owned Pacific Fur Company, the other by the Northwest Company of Montreal. As a result of the war, the Americans decided to sell their trading post in 1813, ending their presence in the Canadian west. Join the Kamloops Museum and Archives and explore the twists and turns of this fascinating story in our new temporary exhibit: The War of 1812 in the West, The Oregon Country Legacy, opening September 10th. On October 17th, join the Kamloops Museum and Archives for a public event in Riverside Park commemorating the handover of the Pacific Fur Company Fort to the “Norwesters of Montreal. The event will run from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon. Flags will be raised and lowered, a new historical plaque will be unveiled and period music played. Deputy Mayor Nelly Dever, MP Cathy McLeod and other officials will be present. That evening, join us at the museum for a free reception and lecture given by historian Ken Favrholdt. The reception is from 5:00 to 7:00 pm followed by the lecture from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
The War of 1812 in the West, the Oregon Country Legacy opens Sept 10.

City CAO expects ‘respectful’ talks By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
He’s not sure what will happen when the city and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) sit down to bargain this fall, but Kamloops CAO David Trawin is hopeful contract negotiations will take less time than the city’s talks with firefighters. “The last two [negotiations] haven’t been that long,” Trawin said. “I can say I’m hopeful we’ll get a deal done by the beginning of the year. But, again, there’s no set time limit on it.” By comparison, the city and firefighters’ Local 913 union agreed to go to arbitration over contract negotiations about a year ago. They are still working on a date that will suit both sides. Trawin said there’s been some talk of a December arbitration, but nothing has been confirmed. The firefighters’ contract expired at the end of 2010. Trawin said city managers involved in negotiations are working on a list of concerns to present to CUPE in
September and expect to get the same from the union. “I don’t think there’s anything huge on it, but there are some things we’d like to see addressed,” he said. Following that, the two parties will sit down to negotiate in early October. Trawin said until the information exchange begins, it’s hard to get a sense of whether negotiations will be tougher this time around. “I think it’ll be respectful,” he said. “All our meetings with CUPE are respectful, I think CUPE is reasonable. When they put something forward, they generally have reasons for doing that. It’s whether we can live with those reasons or not, I guess.” The city’s contract with CUPE, which covers more than 500 unionized employees, expires at the end of 2013. The current three-year deal gave city workers two percent increases each year. Under the contract, the city also pays full premium cost for employees’ dental and medical benefits. A union representative for city workers did not return calls for comment on the upcoming negotiations.

No new fire chief until at least November STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
He had originally hoped to have someone in place in the next few weeks, but Kamloops’ director of corporate services David Duckworth said it is now likely the city won’t have a permanent new fire chief until November. The city began interviewing its top picks in June. At the time, Duckworth said 28 people had applied to lead Kamloops Fire Rescue. Second-round interviews began during the first week of July. In an email to KTW, Duckworth said the
city is still interviewing for the position as of this week and hopes to have a new chief hired by the end of November. That means retired Kamloops fire chief Gary McCall will be heading up the force as interim chief for the next few weeks. McCall, who served as chief between 2002 and 2009, came back to KFR in May at the city’s request after his successor, Neill Moroz retired abruptly from his post. Moroz, 53, was off on personal leave when he decided to retire on May 1. He had 28 years of experience and left with
some banked vacation time and with a city management retirement

It’s a Small world after all — and we are extremely lucky
T
HERE ARE JUST 10 more nights of Music in the Park and another season of fantastic, free music will be
finished. I don’t go as much now as I used to when we lived downtown — but, just knowing the Rotary Bandshell is alive with music every summer evening is satisfying. Music in the Park has introduced Kamloopsians to new performers, helped boost local ones and provided an amazing tourist attraction. It all appears so seamless — people plunk their lawn chairs down on a patch of grass at Riverside Park, check out who is within eyesight and watch as the sound check and final tunings take place up front. When 7 p.m. hits, the music starts and continues for 90 minutes. You might see people up front dancing, others clapping in time with the beat, tapping their toes, nodding their heads — all getting into the groove. And, somewhere backstage, likely pacing or peaking out or worrying about some nitpicking detail most others would ignore, is Henry Small. He’s the person who has kept the dream alive, who spends countless weeks dealing with artists from around the world — such is the respect the annual event has within the music community — to make sure he fills every night. He’s the guy who has to tell the prospective performers the truth — they won’t make a lot of money coming to Kamloops to do a show. They’ll make some, thanks to the
DALE BASS Street
LEVEL support from the city and the B.C. Lottery Corporation, but Music in the Park is a gig more for exposure than paying all the bills. You don’t want to ask Henry any time before about June 30 how the plans are going. It’s a logistical nightmare keeping it all straight, keeping up with the emails and phone calls and doing all those little things that create success. Henry does this because he believes not only in music, but in local music, up-and-coming music, unique music and familiar music. He’s also ready for those nights — and they have and will again happen — when the acts don’t show up and there is that crowd of people out there waiting to be entertained. That’s when Henry the promoter becomes Henry the singer with all the friends who will head on down to the bandshell and fill that void. A few years ago, he wasn’t satisfied with trying to just fill the 60 nights at Riverside Park and added Friday night concerts at McDonald Park in North Kamloops. Sure, it’s not as big an undertak-
ing as the main component, but it’s still another nine nights to book acts and make sure it all comes off as close to perfect as possible. Henry doesn’t do it for the thanks or the applause — unless it’s directed at the acts he’s booked — and he’ll be unhappy about this column. But, he’s a local treasure who does so much for Kamloops simply out of the goodness of his heart and his own love of music. We’re lucky to have him. • On another musical note, it’s unfortunate the Chamber Musicians of Kamloops can’t perform the amazing Water Music suites aboard the Wanda Sue paddlewheeler, as they had hoped to do on Sept. 1. However, that doesn’t detract from the reality this is a unique opportunity for people who either love chamber music or who have never listened to it at all. The work by George Frederick Handel is gorgeous, this group of musicians is fantastic and those who are joining with them to bring the orchestra to 30 performers are also well-seasoned in the classics. For those unfamiliar with the work, perhaps this might help: Parts of the F major suite were used to create the theme music for the PBS cooking show The Frugal Gourmet and the allegro in D major was perfect on the soundtrack of a scene — my favourite — in the movie Dead Poets Society. dale@kamloopsthisweek.com kamloopsstreetlevel.tumblr.com
Among the many platform promises that helped the federal Conservatives win the 2011 election was having senators voted into office, instead of being appointed, and having term limits. The Conservative election platform complained that Liberals “blocked us at every turn” under the minority government. In earlier elections, Prime Minister Stephen Harper vowed Senate reform, which was touted by Conservative candidates across Canada. Harper has seemingly reversed course, appointed dozens of new senators over the past six years and has been largely silent on reforming Canada’s unelected Upper Chamber. With Conservative senators now mired in accounting scandals, the Harper government could have parlayed this public-relations disaster into renewed calls for making the Senate accountable and democratic. Instead, it finds itself drawn into trying to explain a secret loan for improper expenses. Instead of acting, the government opened the door for the federal NDP to capitalize on Senate reform. Its “roll up the red carpet” campaign — a call to abolish the senate — does an effective job laying out the cost of the upper house at $92.5 million this year for a privileged group that works on average 71 days per year. With all the Conservative rhetoric about Senate reform over the past years, it took until July for the federal government to apply to the Supreme Court of Canada to rule on if Parliament alone can change rules on term limits and appointments, or if the provinces must be in unanimous agreement. The Harper Conservatives perhaps are finding a majority government has its pitfalls — they can’t blame others for blocking reforms (or increasing deficits for that matter). Now is the time for government to show leadership. If the latest scandals don’t show the need for senate reform, we don’t know what does. Then again, when faced with incontrovertible truth that misdeeds are rampant, one can always prevail upon the governor general to prorogue the house and turn down the heat.

Editor: Re: Stan Heinz’s letter of Aug. 20 (‘Will taxpayers end up subsidizing Ajax mine?’): Clearly, there are concerns on the part of some Kamloops residents about the possible impacts of KGHM International’s proposed Ajax copper-gold mine south of Aberdeen. KGHM is working to design a mining operation that causes no harm to city residents. “Zero harm” is one of KGHM’s core values, observed and followed at our operations around the world. We recently announced our intention to evaluate and potentially reconfigure the operational arrangement at the proposed
mine site, in part to address concerns from the community about the proximity to Kamloops neighbourhoods. A series of environmental, health and social/economic studies are underway as part of the environmental-assessment process that will examine the potential effects of mine operations and propose solutions to mitigate or eliminate impacts. KGHM will host four community information sessions at Thompson Rivers University’s Grand Hall from Sept. 9 to 12. The moderated open-microphone forums will give people the chance to learn more about those studies and their scope from the technical experts who are
“Dogs have a higher core body temperature than we do and do not sweat the same way we do (dogs sweat through the pads of their feet, oddly enough!). “Their primary method of cooling down is by panting, but this works only if the air around them is cool enough. “It does not take long for a vehicle in 25 C weather to heat up to 40 C inside. “Dogs are not equipped to handle that heat. Even with the windows cracked, the breeze is often not strong enough to have much effect on cooling a dog down. “Plan ahead and make sure your dogs are provided for in the heat.” — posted by Cara Coldwell

Summer of stink in Brocklehurst
RIVER BULLIES NEED TO BE CAUGHT Editor: On Friday, Aug. 16, at 3:25 p.m., I was in my kayak travelling downriver on the North Thompson. I had just passed below Arthur Hatton elementary, which is on the corner of Schubert Drive and Chestnut Street in North Kamloops. I was feeling a bit smug and very happy — smug as I had completed my river trip from Barriere without any mishaps and very happy because I was only 30 minutes from my home on Royal Avenue and was looking forward to seeing my husband and having a cold beer. In a matter of minutes, however, my smug and happy feelings turned to fear and dread. I had noticed a boat travelling upriver across from me when it changed course and came diagonally across the river, straight at me. I was not worried at first as I thought they would change to an upriver course once again in a minute or two. This was not to be. They kept coming straight for me. I paddled closer and closer to the river bank — which, in this part of the river, is steep and covered in rip rap — and kept hoping they would turn. Just when I had accepted the fact they were going to either hit me or force me into the river

performing the work. Please call the KGHM office at 250374-5446 to learn more about the sessions. We hope all who have concerns will take the opportunity to attend one of the sessions and learn more about the research being done to assess potential impacts. The results of the studies are not yet available, but we believe information about the comprehensive nature of the research underway will assure residents KGHM takes their concerns seriously.

bank, they turned upriver again. All I had to deal with was their wake, which was fairly easy to handle. There were three young males standing in the dull green, metal, flat-bottomed river boat. I had the impression one or two of them were quite tanned with short, bleached blonde hair. There is no doubt in my mind this was a deliberate act of intimidation and was probably also caught on someone’s smartphone. Because these individuals were standing and the fact my kayak is bright yellow in colour, visibility would not have been a problem. I object to having my safety on the river threatened by irresponsible half-wits who use a power boat as a tool for intimidation. If these individuals are sharing their experience of bullying either verbally or on the Internet and you happen to know their names, I am asking that you give that information to RCMP Const. Vincent Stevens, file No. 2013/25048. I have one question for the three individuals who were in the boat and, more specifically, for the pilot: What are you going to be when you grow up?
Editor: The odour being emitted from our local pulp mill this summer has been unbearable. It’s hard enough to go outside, let alone walk to the corner store, without getting a headache. In Brocklehurst, I have seen people walking down the street while covering their faces with T-shirts. How this mill is allowed to pollute our neighbourhood as much as it does is beyond me. While some people may be worried about the air quality if the proposed Ajax mine is approved, all one has to do is look to the stinky stack on the hillside of our town.

COMMUNITY KTW HAS THE FLAVOUR! Kamloops This Week’s culinary crew from the advertising department whipped up some savoury salsa during the CAP Team Salsa Challenge 2013, held on Wednesday, Aug. 21, in downtown Kamloops. The team of Brittany Bailey (left), Donny “Volume” Levasseur and Danielle Noordam created a mouth-watering creation in their bid to turn the taste buds of the judges toward KTW and away from the Customer Care and Patrol Team’s much-vaunted recipe. Alas, the newspaper trio did not take a bite out of the title, but most certainly claimed the alliteration award for its Southwest Sizzle Salsa. Dave Eagles/KTW

Gender-neutral washroom on way to Riverside By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
A Portland Loo may be on its way to Riverside Park in 2014, but folks up at the Saturday Kamloops Farmers’ Market will have to stick with portapotties. Kamloops city council visited bathroom issues twice during its regular council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 20. At the recommendation of the city’s coordinated enforcement committee, councillors voted unanimously to have staff develop a pilot program for a gender-neutral washroom in Riverside Park — though they will still have to decide whether to pay for the program come budget time in 2014. Jeff Putnam, parks and civic facilities manager, said the plan is to buy a pre-made, stainless-steel washroom and install it on a cement pad in the park. The cost of the unit, pad and running the necessary services to the site would be about $125,000. The city is eyeing units made by the Portland Loo Company, which Putnam said are considered the best style of accessible washroom.
The small metal boxes have horizontal bars at the top and bottom, rather than full doors, giving the public a view of people’s feet and, for taller users, the tops of heads. “They’re kind of space age but, when you think about it, they make a lot of sense because they’re easy to clean and they’ve got some visibility, so you know what kind of activity might be going on in there without actually seeing the people,” Putnam said. The see-through portions of the bathroom are meant to address worries of the Kamloops RCMP that the bathrooms could become a security concern in the park. Advocates of the gender-neutral or family-style bathrooms say they will make Riverside Park more accessible to those who need help from an opposite-sex spouse or caregiver when using the washroom. While the city is moving forward in Riverside, councillors declined to help the Kamloops Regional Farmers’ Market Society secure more permanent washroom facilities for its Saturday market at Stuart Wood elementary. Society director

Frank Blom said the market is spending about 10 per cent of its operating budget each year providing portable washrooms at the market, noting a more permanent and accessible solution would be preferable. Coun. Nancy Bepple suggested looking at the nearby Kamloops Museum and Archives as a bathroom option for the event. Byron McCorkell, the city’s parks, recreation and cultural services director, said that’s not an ideal solution. “The museum has its own customer base, the washroom’s in the back, you have to go through the kids’ section,” he said. “It’s difficult for two staff and no janitor to deal with the impact of potentially 3,000 users. “It doesn’t work.”

other request. The city’s service agreement committee will look at giving the society a two-year permit for its markets, which, Blom said, will allow for more stable planning.

Bepple suggested the city look at hiring extra staff, including a custodian, for a special Saturday shift in the summer, but only Coun. Donovan Cavers supported the idea. Coun. Pat Wallace suggested the society talk to School District 73 about using the Stuart Wood elementary bathrooms. Coun. Ken Christian, a former school trustee, said it’s unlikely that idea would fly, but doesn’t think the market needs more permanent facilities. “This is a temporary market. It operates during the summer. It’s at a temporary location. It should have temporary facilities,” he said. “Every farmers’ market I’ve been to has port-a-potties.” Councillors did, however, opt to help the market out with its

More riders, fewer complaints By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Kamloops transit users are riding the bus slightly more and complaining about it slightly less, according to new numbers from BC Transit. The number of rides taken over a year increased from 3.4 million between April 2011 and the end of March 2012 to just under 3.5 million over the same period in 2012 and 2013. Factoring in thousands of new hours of bus service the city rolled out last fall, the number of riders using Kamloops transit per hour increased more modestly, going to 34 from 33. The city budgeted for 35
riders per hour over the period. Kevin Schubert, Transit’s regional manager, said the numbers are a good sign, reflecting relatively steady 32 per cent cost-recovery. “We’ve increase hours by about two per cent and we’ve
seen an increase in revenue of about 1.5 per cent,” he said. “We’ll expect to see that number go up in the next couple years.” Schubert said it typically takes about three years for service increases to attract all
the riders who want them and, with the increase in hours and a new transit garage the city opened last year, he said, it’s “pretty impressive” to see the kind of growth Kamloops transit has had. Transit’s statistics show the number of complaints about service decreasing. Schubert said for every 500,000 rides transit users finish, there are just over 19 pieces of negative feedback about bus service, down from about 28 last year. However, the number of complaints about drivers stayed steady, with 27.5 complaints about drivers per 500,000 rides, compared to 28.5 last year.

On a full-moon hot-August night -- his favourite kind -- Dave Anderson’s 96year journey peacefully concluded. In a life built upon hard work (sheep herding/ ranching, turkey farming, crop growing/harvesting, house building, family rearing) and “hard play,” (water skiing, boating, hunting, fishing, canoeing, huckleberry-picking, oldtime fiddling, horseshoeplaying, curling, trap/skeet shooting and dancing ), Dave, together with his wife, Alec, crafted a remarkable life of strength, adventure and exploration for his family. Dave’s patient demeanor, exemplified through joint endeavors with Alec (fly-tying, cedar-strip-canoe/boat/deck-building, gardening/ food preserving), must certainly have been tested by the seemingly-endless fish-line-untangling sessions of his family’s early attempts to catch brook trout! Above all else, Dave’s work ethic, hammered home with every driven nail, will be his lasting legacy for all within his circle of influence, but now it is time for his much-deserved rest. Abundant support systems accommodated Dave’s independent and autonomous life and all facilitators of this assistance are gratefully acknowledged. A Celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Schoening Funeral Chapel with Reverend Teri Meyer officiating.

He said when an angel misses you, They toss a penny down Sometimes just to cheer you ou up, Make a smile out of your frown own So don’t pass by that penny, When you’re feeling blue It may be a penny from heaven That an angel tossed to you.

Local riding second-most populous in B.C. By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
New federal-electoral boundaries will make the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding the second-most populous in all of B.C. Riding boundaries across the province were readjusted by the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for B.C. during the past year-and-a-half as part of a national redistribution that added six new seats each in British Columbia and Alberta, 15 in Ontario and three in Quebec. None of B.C.’s new seats are located in the Interior. For Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, the boundaries won’t change much.
An earlier draft of the new ridings removed 100 Mile House and some areas near Clinton from the riding. However, in its final report to the Chief Electoral Officer at Elections Canada, the commission said it chose to return them to the riding based on public submissions. “The boundaries of the existing district are largely unchanged,” the commission writes, “excepting the transfer of the Valemount area to the Prince George— Peace River electoral district.” The slight change leaves the riding with a population of 118,618. That’s more than 13 per cent above the target population of 104,763 for federal ridings. The only riding in the province with
Movie in the park hits Riverside screen tonight The popular Interior Savings Moonlight Movie Tour returns to Riverside Park tonight (Aug. 22) after thunder, lightning and rain forced cancellation of the original showing on Aug. 12. The annual event, which sees families haul chairs, blankets and treats to the east side of Riverside Park, is a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops. While there is no admission charged, donations are welcomed. The concession opens at 7 p.m. and the movie, the animated Rise of the Guardians, will be projected on the giant, inflatable movie screen at dusk. Last summer the Interior movie tour entertained more than 9,000 people, raising more than $24,000 for various charities. Enjoy — and don’t forget the bug spray!

more people is also in the Interior. Following the next federal election, North Okanagan-Shuswap’s MP will represent 121,062 people, a variance of more than 15 per cent. A spokeswoman with Elections Canada said 13 per cent is within the range of variance deemed acceptable by the federal Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act, which states no riding may have a population variance of more than 25 per cent from the average district population, except in “extraordinary circumstances.” B.C.’s least-populous riding is SkeenaBulkley Valley, with 90,586 people. The northern riding makes up what it lacks in population by being one of the largest ridings by geography in the province,

NDP’s Allen talks food strategy in city visit By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
When you talk agriculture with the NDP member of Parliament charged with critiquing the government in that area, there are so many topics that can be discussed. For example, on the federal government’s decision to close its agriculture-research centre in Kamloops: “It’s obvious the government wants out of private research,” said Malcolm Allen, the MP for Welland in Ontario and member of the fed-
eral NDP shadow cabinet. Allen was in Kamloops this week as part of a B.C. tour. “General research as a public good is less and less” as the government allows it to move to educational and commercial organizations, where it is commercialized, he said. On the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s new definition of “local food” to be anything produced in the same province in which it is sold or food sold across provincial borders within 50 kilometres of the originating location: “Local-food designation in some

Kaminishi’s incredible story not over By Cavelle Layes STAFF REPORTER reporter@kamloopsthisweek.com
H
E HAS already nabbed an everlasting place in Canada’s sports history but, at 91, he hasn’t thought twice about settling down just yet. Kaye Kaminishi — once a member of the Vancouver Asahi, a famous JapaneseCanadian baseball team — will compete in badminton this year in his 25th BC Seniors Games, now underway in Kamloops. Kaminishi had a strong love for badminton throughout his teens, playing competitively at school, but, when his family was forced to move at the start of the Second World War, he traded in the birdie for a baseball. He tried out for the Asahi at the age of 17. “I was just a rookie then,” he said. Kaminishi stuck with the squad and was part of the Asahi’s five-year winning streak between 1937 and 1941, playing a major role on a team with a reputation that has withstood the test of time. When Canada declared war on Japan in December of 1941, the streak was over. The Asahi, formed in 1914, was disbanded and Kaminishi and his mother ended up in an

internment camp east of Lillooet. While the team was no more, its legacy remains. In 2003, the club was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Enshrinement in the BC Sports Hall of Fame followed in 2005. “I am the last one left,” Kaminishi said. “There was one other team member living in Toronto, but he passed away in June. He was 101 years old.” There have been multiple documentaries made about the Asahi, including
Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story, a National Film Board production. Kaminishi was inducted into the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. He holds the memories of his time with the Asahi close to his heart, displaying autographed posters from the inductions on his wall alongside photographs of his old team — little pieces of Canadian history. Kaminishi’s athletic career didn’t end with the Asahi. In 1947, he moved to Kamloops and redis-
covered badminton. Still spry, the Sahali resident is aiming to add to his medal collection at this year’s Games. “I have many medals,” Kaminishi said, pointing to a wall filled with gold, silver and bronze. “We go to a different city each year,” he said. “You get to see
so much, so many little places.” On his coffee table,
next to an old photo album filled with newspaper clippings and photos of his Asahi days, sits a second album. This one is filled with 25 years worth of photos, programs, schedules and articles from each of the BC Senior Games he has attended. Kaminishi looks at them with pride, noting the significance of a number of images throughout the album. “I am so lucky to be able to play at my age,” he said. This year, Kaminishi will be entering the competition without his doubles partner of 15 years, Herb Pendell of Salmon Arm. “He is losing his vision, so he had to give up the game,” Kaminishi said. “I am very sad. I am going to miss him.” Kaminishi will be in action today (Aug. 22)
inside the Thompson Rivers University Gym. He is scheduled to play at 9:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. On Friday, Aug. 23, he will take the court at 8:15 a.m. He’s looking forward to playing in front of a hometown crowd — with his eyes firmly set on a podium finish. “I am very proud,” Kaminishi said. “Humble, but proud.”
Close call Kaminishi’s former team, the Asahi, was honoured at the Canadian embassy in Japan on March 7, 2011. Four days later, the country was hit by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami that followed. Kaminishi and his wife Florence were visiting Japan at the time. They were able to return home unharmed.
At the tender age of 91, Kaye Kaminishi of Kamloops is aiming to add to his medal collection at the BC Seniors Games in the Tournament Capital. He is set to compete in badminton today (Aug. 22) at the TRU Gym. Cavelle Layes/KTW

Smith returns for training camp By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
Kamloops Blazers’ fans will have at least one more chance to watch Colin Smith in action at Interior Savings Centre. The Colorado Avalanche forward will attend the Blue and Orange’s training camp, which gets underway today (Aug. 22). Smith was not obligated to come to Kamloops, but decided it was in his best interest to pick up the intensity level before heading to the Centennial State for the NHL squad’s rookie camp, which begins on Sunday, Sept. 8. “I feel it’s more important at this point to get on the ice, especially in a competitive environment, rather than just skating with other guys, where it’s not as competitive,” Smith told KTW. “It would have just been me staying here [Edmonton] for a week and training. I’m still going down a week early to Colorado.” Blazers’ rookie camp runs on Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug.

Armstrong thrilled with historic medal at worlds By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
Dylan Armstrong took time to reflect on his bronze-medal win in shot put at the World Track and Field Championships in Moscow before making his way across Europe. “I celebrated with a few friends from various countries,” Armstrong told KTW from Slovakia on Tuesday, Aug. 20. “I feel great. I am extremely happy I got a medal for Canada. It was great to add another one from worlds [silver in 2011] and I feel I made the right choices this year and listened to every detail my coach laid out for me.” His coach, as many
Kamloopsians know by now, is Anatoliy Bondarchuk, an intriguing 73-yearold fellow from the Ukraine who coaches in the Tournament Capital at the National Throws Centre. Armstrong threw a season-best 21.34 metres to capture bronze at Luzhniki Stadium on Friday, Aug. 16. The medal was one of five earned by Canadians in Moscow — making it the most successful showing in the country’s history at the world championships. Armstrong said there are about eight European competitions left to attend on this year’s schedule, includ-
ing two International Association of Athletics Federations Diamond League events, the next one slated for Thursday, Aug. 29, in Zurich, Switzerland. After the season is over, Armstrong will, “take a little time off and catch up with the business side of things, then get back to the grind.” The Kamloops Blazers are interested in honouring Armstrong’s accomplishments at a game this season. With the International Olympic Committee expected to award Armstrong with retroactive bronze from the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, the WHL club

Tickets are $5. “Kamloops is where I’ve got myself ready the last five years,” Smith said. “I felt that it wouldn’t make much sense trying to change things up just because I’m trying to turn pro. “They wanted me to come back and, at the same time, technically, there is a possibility [of playing this season in Kamloops], so I just felt it was the right decision to come back.” Smith will leave the River City on Friday, Aug. 30, the same day Kamloops is slated to play its first exhibition game against the Rockets in Kelowna. The Blazers are hosting the Vancouver Giants in exhibition play at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, at ISC. Smith, who signed a three-year entrylevel contract with the Avalanche on July 5, will play next season with either the Avs, the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League or the Blazers — although a return to the WHL is unlikely. “I’m just going to go to camp [in Colorado] and do everything I can to stay as long as I can and, then, realistically, if I get sent down [to Cleveland, home of Lake Erie], I’ll try and be an impact player and stay there.” According to capgeek.com, Smith’s salary in the first year of the deal is $60,000 when playing in the AHL and $620,000 if playing with the Avalanche. He will be paid to scale for time spent in either league. Smith is due to receive three $70,000 signing bonuses, one for each year of the contract, according to the website. The Blazers’ firstround pick in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft has already received the first half of his Year 1 signing bonus. He said it was surreal to receive his first cheque. “It was actually

Under the B — for Bravo, Edna!
I
T WAS JUST A FRIENDLY VISIT — but the pairing of Edna Arnold and Linda Bonner-Brown is helping kidney research. Many Kamloopsians know Linda from her years staffing an information table at Royal Inland Hospital, doing what she can to help educate the public about kidney disease and promote the need for transplant donors. She also spends a lot of time volunteering at seniors’ centres — and that brought her to Edna, a 102-year-old resident at Pine Grove Care Centre on McGowan Avenue in North Kamloops. Both like to play bingo, but Edna, being blind, needs a bit of help, so the two can often be found sitting together in the common room at the centre as recreation manager Wendy Romanowski grabs the bouncing balls and calls out the numbers. The pair got to talking and, Edna said, she decided she wanted to help Linda with her cause. Edna now sets aside half of her bingo winnings to donate to the upcoming B.C. Kidney Walk on Sunday, Aug. 25, at Riverside Park. Most of the games net the “bingo” shout-out a small candy bar — and Edna collects her fair share of those each week — but, once a week, there’s some cash up for grabs. Edna collects that pretty often, too. These games are for fun, though, so in the past three months, Edna has $22.50 ready to donate on the 25th. But, part of becoming Linda’s friend has been joining that wider community of Kamloops residents who work hard to help the Kidney Foundation. And, Linda said, that means not only will she contribute twice to Edna’s final tally before the walk, two other volunteers are also going to double the amount. Edna said it’s no big thing for her to donate half her winnings — she saves the candy bars to give away to family and other visitors, as well.
Annual event aims to raise $30K for foundation With one-third of the goal already met, organizers of the annual B.C. Kidney Walk are optimistic. The Sunday, Aug. 25, event at Riverside Park starts at 11 a.m., with those taking part in the walk (2.5 kilometres) or run (five kilometres) heading out at noon. Among them will be the Toonie Trio — Hazel Glusman, Marg Batke and Verna Hilborn — who save toonies and,
last year, combined to donate more than $1,000. There will be plenty of survivors, said Linda Bonner-Brown, a volunteer with the Kidney Foundation who has a team of friends running for her — she has mobility issues — in memory of husband Doug, who died from kidney disease. The hope is to raise $30,000, money that will be used to fund
foundation programs. While donations will go a long way to meeting the goal, there will also be a silent auction at the walk, with many goods up for bids, including a two-night stay at the Wells Gray guesthouse, golf passes and restaurant gift certificates. To register or sponsor a participant, go online to kidneywalk.ca/bcwalk and click through the links to Kamloops.
Toonie Trio set to make trek

Hazel Glusman has a personal reason for taking part in the annual B.C. Kidney Walk on Sunday, Aug. 25. A member of the Toonie Trio — alongside Marg Batke and Verna Hilborn — she’s been saving her big coins with an eye to topping the $700 mark she hit for last year’s walk. That will be satisfying for the 74-year-old — but, more satisfying will be doing the 2.5-kilometre fun walk itself knowing that, at one point, she was so ill she could barely raise her arms to comb her hair. Back in 2007, Hazel just wasn’t feeling well. She had heart palpitations that wouldn’t stop. Doctors checked and told her there were no problems with her heart. But, Hazel kept getting sicker until one night in October of that year, she woke
up unable to breathe. Hazel was being treated at the time for pneumonia and, having no temperature, just pain and weakness, doctors weren’t sure what was wrong. Husband Dave Smith called an ambulance, Hazel was rushed into the ER and then flown to a Vancouver hospital to confirm what Royal Inland Hospital doctors suspected — she had Wegener’s granulomatosis, a form of kidney disease that can also affect lungs and breathing. Her life became one dominated by tests and various forms of dialysis. Hazel eventually went from at-home dialysis four times a day to once. “Once a day is like a dream,” she said. Two years ago, Hazel wasn’t able to do the walk, but last year she made it. She’s going to do it again, walking with her toonie buddies. But not hubby. He’ll be on the sidelines because, Hazel said with a laugh: “He walks too slow.”

Generous numbers add up in Kamloops The 2013 Daybreak Rotary/Interior Savings Ribfest was a delicious success. Ribfest spokesman Bryce Herman said Ribfest, which was held from Aug. 9 to Aug. 11 in Riverside Park, raised more than $60,000 for local charities. He said there were more than 50,000 visits this year — an increase of more than 15,000 from 2012’s inaugural event.
Arrrrrrrrguably the best year ever White Spot’s sixth annual Pirate Pak Day, held on Aug. 14, raised a record

expect to reach until 2015. Launched in March 2010, Feed the Valley is a community investment program created by Valley First. The program aims to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks throughout the Okanagan, Similkameen and Thompson regions. “It’s simply incredible,” said Valley First president Paulette Rennie of the totals. “In less than three-and-half years we’ve already raised $515,000. On top of this, we’ve also collected close to 50,000 pounds of food for our local food banks.

It’s unfair to give a giant American corporation special treatment. I can tell you personally that this is an incredibly competitive industry. One company does something and the others scramble to beat it. That’s good, fair competition. But now, the Canadian Government is allowing a giant U.S. cellphone company to buy up small Canadian operators that Canadian cellphone companies like mine aren’t allowed to buy. Since we can’t bid, they’ll likely even get a huge discount on the price, effectively at the Canadian taxpayers’ expense. But it gets worse. They get to piggyback on the infrastructure we built — and they didn’t contribute a cent. That’s not good, fair competition. You know, we teach our kids to play fair. That’s about as Canadian as it gets. So why is our government giving a giant U.S. corporation special treatment? That’s not fair. Ottawa needs to close the loopholes.

Experiencing the grasshopper
T
HANK YOU, DISCOVERY CHANNEL. Without your often fine programming, it may never have wriggled into my consciousness. It may never have hopped or jumped or flicked its way into my mind. I may never have know that, pound for pound, grasshoppers provide more protein than chicken. More protein, too, than beef. Than pork. Than duck, pheasant, venison and, presumably, buffalo, quail, ostrich, lamb or goat. Certainly, I did already know, having grown up on the Canadian Prairies, that
DARCIE HOSSACK Bon APPÉTIT grasshoppers are plentiful. They are inexhaustible. We could, in fact, sieve an entire plague off the land, even as it’s munching its way through a wheat or canola crop, and another yummy plague would simply grow up in its place. And, because a
grasshopper once flew into my mouth while I was trying to get to my grandmother in her devastated garden, I know, too, that grasshoppers come in handy bitesized portions that are lightweight and easy for snacking. As they would be for shipping. Given a change of consciousness on the part of Canadians, we could probably save our grasslands from grazing livestock, having taken to heart grasshopper ranching is the future. And, for those lucky enough to have grasshoppers in their own yards, they can be eaten fresh from the garden, sizzled in oil as a popcorn substitute, dried for storage or cooked
up in thousands upon thousands of different, delectable ways, including dry-roasted, tossed in a wok or (and this is my favourite idea, courtesy of one very odd blogger) hidden in Christmas fruitcake. I know, I know. There’s the heebiejeebie effect we in the West just can’t seem to overcome, no matter how much ketchup we splatter on the idea. But, let us consider that in much of Asia, grasshoppers are a symbol of good luck and abundance. Fancy varieties are even kept as cherished pets in intricate handmade cages, while the more ordinary sorts are enjoyed as street food, skewered on bamboo
sticks. And, since pestilences are scheduled to increase as we lunge towards a warmer world, Waste Not, Want Not is an concept we might as well adopt — especially given a wasted opportunity just so happens to be hopping around our feet. Hopping. Hopping and scrabbling. Hopping, scrabbling and scratching. And that, right there, Dear Discovery Channel, is my problem at this very moment: Roughly 0.54 grams of the ickiest creature that’s ever stood between me and my front door. Now, with my social consciousness adjusted,
In the bowl of a large food processor fitted with the blade attachment, puree five peaches at a time until slightly chunky. Transfer to a large pot, add jalapenos and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. When simmering, stir in sugar, lemon juice and pectin until sugar is thoroughly dissolved. Continue to let the jam simmer for another 15 minutes to thicken. Add butter to prevent foaming. If any foam does come to the surface, skim it off with a spoon and discard. Boil jars and lids for 10 minutes to sterilize. Use a funnel and ladle to fill each jar, leaving about one-quarter inch of room at the top of each jar. Wipe each jar and top it with a lid and band. Place jars in a boiling water bath for 15 minutes to process, making sure the simmering water covers the jars by at least an inch. Remove jars and let them cool completely for 24 hours. If any jars are not sealed (lid still pops down when gently pressed), reprocess. Store sealed jars in a cool dark pantry for up to one year.
do I stop and think to myself, “Oh look! An ingredient!” Or, “There’s the garnish I was looking for?” No, I do not. The only thing I think is slowly, stealthily, slip the flip flop from my foot and SMACK! that grasshopper into jam. A few moments later, however, after my heart rate has knocked its way back to resting, and as I stoop to scrape crunchy-slimy, yellow-
green thorax from my sole, I do feel the quickening of an idea. Grasshopper jam. Well, OK — maybe I’m not quite there yet.

FAITH
Leadership: Oft-repeated, underrated
L
EADERSHIP CRISES ARE ON THE INCREASE IN EVERY SPHERE OF SOCIETY — EDUCATIONAL, GOVERNMENT, ADMINISTRATION, POLITICS — AND EVEN IN THE CHURCH. True leadership, even when it is practised by the most mature and emotionally stable person, always exacts a toll on the individual. Jesus seemed to have had this thought in mind when he said: “If you really want to find your life, you must lose it” (Luke 9:24). It is true any worthwhile accomplishment has a price tag on it. The issue is reduced to one basic question: How much are we really willing to pay in hard work and sweat, in patience, in faith and endurance to obtain it? Brickbats hit leaders from various angles. Casualties result
NARAYAN MITRA You Gotta Have FAITH because of unguarded sources. Criticism is a great price paid by leaders. If one cannot handle criticism, it means basically the person is emotionally immature. This defect would show up and impede the individual’s and the group’s progress toward the common goal. Every leader has to expect some of it. The mature leader is able to handle this and makes the needed personal adjustments and corrections. They are then able to reflect that the criticisms
has led them to deeper self-examination. Over the course of my ministry experience, I have seen pastors come and go abruptly, leaving behind leaderless churches. Loneliness, fatigue, rejection, sense of competition, abuse of power and other factors have been led to empty pulpits. The willingness to be alone in the service of others is nerve-inspiring but quite challenging. A true leader promotes others — their interests, values and goals. At the same time, the effective leader must strive to fulfill their own potential and goals without being absorbed into the “constituency.” This could leave them somewhere in between because they must identify with and be isolated from people. Someone has said the world is run by tired men.
There is substance in the statement. A wise leader would try to find a balance, a change of pace to reduce stress. But, if a person burns out completely, their influence and contribution end. Proper health care, rest and balance would help a leader maintain their ability to persist. A leader must be prepared to recognize the toll upon them emotionally and physically. A Christian leader must also be ready to pay the price of personal rejection. There is always the strong possibility that somewhere they may be maligned for their faith or Christian perspective on issues. Jesus had to walk this path. “He came unto his own, but they received him not” (John 1:11). The leader must be able at times to resist praise.
They must have courage to be willing to stand up against the spirit of the age. They put praise of God above the praise of men. They know “the fear of man lays a snare” (Proverbs 29:25). The verdicts or judgments of men do not change their standard if it is truly God- and people-oriented. Still another peril of leadership is the effect of competition. There is a price for leaders to pay if they suffer from a “competition anxiety” that takes the form of fear of failure or the fear of success. On the other hand, power has become accepted as the basic characteristic of leadership in the long history of mankind. In any organization, including a Christian group, when a person is given authority, they are in a legitimate position to exercise control and influence.
assess their contributions objectively. They drag their heels and either hinder or retard growth and development. We might be able to think of other ways in which a true leader must be ready to pay a price if they are to retain a responsible position. When all is said and done, when they are willing to pay the sacrifices necessary for success, their span of service will be marked by high quality and excellence. narayanmitra@hotmail. com
