ARREN MACKENZIE is looking forward to Christmas. He’s pretty excited about son Riley’s next birthday, even though it’s almost a year away. In fact, it’s fair to say every day is another bright moment for Darren — and he has big brother Dean to thank. Darren was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2008. On Riley’s first birthday last year, Darren was told by his doctor he was going to need dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis began in January. The treatment allows patients a bit more freedom and
can be done at home or even while sleeping. By May, however, doctors changed the treatment to hemodialysis and Darren found himself spending four hours each day, six days a week, hooked up to a machine that would do the work his kidneys couldn’t, filtering out waste in the body and restoring the proper chemical balance to his blood. But, it became apparent a transplant was the best option — and that’s where Dean stepped up. He never thought twice about offering one of his kidneys, he said. “It was a simple decision,” he said. “Never even thought about it. No. I’ve got two. If he needs one, he can have it.” A battery of tests ensued, all the
things required to determine if Dean was a match and if he was healthy enough to then be a donor. A November date for the operation was set but, thanks to a cancellation, the brothers got a phone call on Oct. 23, telling them to be at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver by Oct. 28 for the transplant. Recovery went well, although Dean experienced a bit more pain from the surgery than did Darren. Darren was allowed to come home for a few hours for Riley’s second birthday but, otherwise, had to stay close to the Vancouver hospital for four weeks after the surgery to watch for complications. Now, “I feel 200 per cent better,” Darren said, although he remains off work from his job at the Kamloops
Regional Correctional Centre. Dean also had to take time off from his job with Tolko. The brothers have always been close, said Mandy MacKenzie, Dean’s wife, something she attributes to their grandparents, who had a large family and instilled a strong belief in family ties in each child. Tracy MacKenzie, Darren’s wife, added that, although the brothers have always been close, there’s a stronger bond now. “Some of his little traits are coming out,” Darren said with a laugh. “Like, I never got up before a quarter to five before and I do now.” Joking aside, the brothers share a newfound respect for the medical profession, from the doctors, nurses and care aides to the receptionist at
the new dialysis clinic on the North Shore. “They are all unbelievable,” Darren said. “I can’t say enough about how great everyone was.” The brothers also acknowledged this Christmas will have special meaning because, as Darren explained, he was in rough shape this time last year. He’s particularly grateful to his brother and sister-in-law because he met people at St. Paul’s Hospital waiting for donor kidneys. “There was one man I met, he has two or three brothers and sisters and each one said no, they weren’t going to be tested,” Darren said. “I said to him, ‘Are you not close to them?’ “He said, ‘I thought we were’.”

Millions raised for typhoon victims BC Liquor Store customers donated more than $217,000 to help Red Cross with its efforts in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan. One hundred per cent of money raised has been forwarded to the Canadian Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. Following a request from the Canadian Red Cross, BC Liquor Stores began accepting donations from customers and staff on Nov. 12 to support Red Cross efforts in the Philippines. The fundraising campaign took place in all 195 BC Liquor Store locations — including those in
Kamloops — and ran until Dec. 9. The provincial government is also matching the first $300,000 donated by British Columbians through all donation methods. In total, British Columbians con-
tributed more than $3.68 million to the Canadian Red Cross. The Red Cross is using donations to help in communities most affected by Typhoon Haiyan. In its wake, the storm left 4.1-million people dis-

Nurses’ union calls for changes after attack By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
There have been 64 incidents at Hillside Centre this year, the most recent occurring on Dec. 13, when a young nurse was attacked by a patient. According to the B.C. Nurses’ Union (BCNU), she was alone on the ward of the psychiatric centre when she was attacked. The BCNU said it took eight staff members to get the man off the recent nurse graduate after he punched her in the face, knocked her down and pinned her to the floor. While he was being taken to jail in handcuffs, the patient assaulted an RCMP officer. A BCNU press release said the man has an extensive history of violent attacks. Kamloops RCMP said it has been called to Hillside three times this year to help deal with a
violent situation. Cpl. Cheryl Bush said the facility has its own “processes and policies for dealing with incidents and only call us when necessary.” Sandy daSilva, the Interior Health Authority’s (IHA) director of tertiary mentalhealth services, said the procedure is to call a Code White if the behaviour of a patient escalates to the point staff feel they need help. While she couldn’t speak to 2013 statistics, daSilva said 58 per cent of Code White incidents in 2012 were resolved without having to restrain a patient. “And we want to see more Code Whites called when we call for help,” she said. DaSilva said she couldn’t speak to specifics in the press release from Tracy Quewezance, BCNU’s Thompson-North Okanagan chairwoman, but said the ward at
Hillside was fully staffed to deal with the number of patients and severity of their illnesses on Saturday, Dec. 14, when the incident occurred. The union said it has repeatedly raised safety concerns about the 44-bed facility, meeting with its management several times to review contract language on safe staffing. DaSilva said she couldn’t speak on the discussions, but noted the
IHA will be addressing the issue during upcoming bargaining talks with the nurses’ union. She added an investigation into the incident is ongoing and she expects its report will include “what we can learn and take forward from this and, if need be, to change our processes.” The union said a second fight also broke out in the centre at the time the nurse was attacked. The patient who
attacked the nurse was transferred to the centre from a forensic facility about two weeks ago. While at the previous centre, he required four staff members to be on duty and at least three had to be male. Quewezance said the IHA needs to provide staffing levels that ensure a safe environment, not a minimum, at all times. She said the nurse “has been severely traumatized. She’ll never got
back there. It could have been a lot worse.” Margaret Dhillon, a BCNU executive member who deals with health and safety, said the contract language has been the source of issues throughout the province. She said the new language, negotiated for a contract that runs from 2012 to 2014, provides for a charge nurse to determine if staffing is sufficient on a ward and, if necessary, meet with
the manager to request more staff. Dhillon said the understanding during bargaining was management would not be arbitrary in making its decisions, but she said the IHA often will not bring in staff when a charge nurse requests it. Dhillon said some of the 64 assaults involved employees represented by other unions, but she did not know how many were considered to be severe.

A decision by the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) on the country’s prostitution laws is being hailed by an advocate who has worked with prostitutes in Kamloops. Lisa Armstrong, who once helped run the SHOP (Social and Health Options for Persons in the Sex Trade) program when it was located on St. Paul Street in the former Webb House downtown, said the ruling shows the justices recognize
“women need to be protected.” Armstrong, who now works with the White Buffalo Aboriginal Health Society on women’s issues, said the unanimous decision by the country’s top court will help bring women out of “the alleys and the shadows.” The court struck down federal anti-prostitution laws, giving the federal government one year to come up with new legislation. The case was taken through the legal system by Terri Jean Bedford, Amy Lebovitch and

Freedoms, which states: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance
with the principles of fundamental justice.” A variety of other organizations joined the suit as interveners to support the plaintiffs and defendants, the latter of whom are the attorneys general of Ontario and Canada. As the case went through the legal system, the Ontario Court of Appeal had upheld the law against commu-
nicating in public, but sided with a lower-court decision that overturned laws against living off the avails and keeping a common bawdy house or brothel. In its ruling, the Supreme Court of Canada said “prostitution itself is not illegal. It is not against the law to exchange sex for money.” Cathy McLeod, Conservative MP for Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo, noted her government has a year to “look at what we’re going to do.” She said it will
review the legislation “that protects the most vulnerable, but also that protects communities,” adding it is too soon to predict what that will look like. Armstrong said women who work the streets “are open to all kinds of monsters and nobody knows where they go. “They end up missing. They end up dead.” She said allowing brothels and bawdy houses would afford prostitutes more protection and make it easier for social agencies to locate them to provide support.
Sundhu: Decision makes ‘eminent sense’ Kamloops lawyer Bill Sundhu said the decision by the Supreme Court of Canada on federal prostitution laws “makes eminent sense. “The court has said Parliament has a right to make a law, but this is a bad law,” he added. Sundhu said he was delighted to see the justices unanimously declare the existing laws violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, acknowledging prostitution “is a risky, but legal” activity, but noting the current laws force women to work in dangerous conditions. Sundhu said the law addressing living off the avails of prostitution, for example, could be applied not only to pimps, but to accountants or counsellors who are hired by prostitute. He said he particularly liked the analogy contained in the 83-page ruling that enforcement of the laws on prostitutes is like “preventing a cyclist from wearing a helmet” to protect themselves. “There’s a puritanical streak in our population and in our Parliament that thinks you can punish people into compliance,” Sundhu said. “But, if you look at Prohibition, if you look at the so-called war on drugs, it hasn’t worked. And the justices said this law goes too far, is too broad and unreasonable.” Sundhu noted the court did not say Parliament has

Yes, Virginia, there still is a Santa Claus We at Kamloops This Week take pleasure in publishing this famous editorial that first appeared in the New York Sun in 1897. One hundred and 16 years later, the message still resonates. Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in the Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O’Hanlon 115 West Ninety-Fifth Street Virginia, your little friends are wrong. Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor
men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives! And he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

At least that’s the word from Weather Network meteorologist Dayna Vettese. “It looks like there is some snow on the ground and we don’t expect it to be too warm,” she said. “And there’s the chance of some flurries on Christmas Day, which would

A Kamloops man is in custody after a botched home-invasion attempt just past midnight on Friday, Dec. 20. Just after 12:30 a.m., RCMP received a report of a man trying to force his way into a home in the 700-block of Columbia Street downtown. Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Dave Prentice said the man smashed two windows and reaching through to try to unlock the door. At this point, Prentice said, the man was confronted by two people living in the home. The man backed up into the street and reached into his knapsack, pulling out an imitation handgun and pointing it at his pursuers. He then ran from the area. Mounties found the suspect in a nearby taxi, Prentice said, adding the taxi driver initially lied about where the fare was picked up. The 28-year-old suspect was slated to appear in court on Friday, Dec. 20, for a bail hearing. The arrest was just one incident in a busy night for Kamloops RCMP. Five other men were held overnight in city cells after a string of unrelated incidents.

New Life Mission goes local in fundraising campaign By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Stan Dueck has already heard the question. “Where’s the homeless guy on the fundraising envelope?” For years, the New Life Mission has used the same man’s face on its annual Christmas campaign literature — but, no more. “That homeless man was from somewhere in the U.S.,” said the mission’s executive director. “We’ve used it for years, about 13 years, I think, but we wanted to make a more local campaign.” With the assistance of Aleece Laird at Fresh Inc. — “who worked her butt off to customize local stories,” Dueck said — the mission has put out its fundraising message with Kamloops stories. There is the story of Michael, a man who struggled with sobriety for years until finally taking his young daughter to
his mother, asking mom to look after her “while he went to the New Life Mission to get himself straightened out,” Dueck said. Michael was proud to tell his story about how hard he has worked with the mission and the White Buffalo Aboriginal Health Society to gain control of his life, Dueck said. “We are as much about that as we are about providing meals.” Host lunches and dinners are still important, though, and the donations are coming in — some to the penny — for the $3.11 the campaign said it costs the mission to serve one meal. “If people want to give for three, six, 10 people to have a meal, that’s good,” Dueck said. “But, feeding the hungry, that’s covered. It’s the other programs that people don’t see. That’s where we see life turn around.” He’ll often take people on tours through the mission’s outreach centre on West Victoria Street in downtown
Kamloops, showing them where programs are run, letting them see “the time and work and energy these guys are putting in.” The campaign’s goal is $200,000, which he said is realistic. So far, it’s reached 35 per cent of that target. That includes 51 new donors included in the 769 donations to date, something Dueck is particularly delighted to see. He’s also happy with the success of the re-opened Thrift City on Seymour Street, which was closed for several weeks after a fire and vandalism left it damaged. Store manager Regan Wilson “was in there night and day,” Dueck said, working with the companies that stepped up to help with the restoration. The first day it opened, it did $2,500 in sales, more than double the normal daily average of about $1,200. In the first week, it took in about $12,000. Sales have started to taper off now, but the store is only working at half capacity, with the basement still closed.

RANDY ALLAN LYNDS 1954-2013
Kathleen Petrus very peacefully passed away on Wed. December 11, 2013 in Kamloops, BC at the age of 73. Born on November 29, 1940 in Vancouver BC, she survived Polio and conquered life with strong determination.
Randy passed away on December 14, 2013 with his wife and best friend, Nancy, by his side after his admirable battle with ALS. Randy was born in Kipling, SK and moved to Thompson, MB with his family in 1959. With his love of hockey, he chose to finish his schooling at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, SK. He met his true love Nancy in 1972 and they were married in 1974. Randy started working for INCO in 1973 and there he took his Mill Wright and Heavy Duty Mechanical Apprenticeships. In December 1980 Randy moved his family to Logan Lake and started working for Lornex Mines. His diligence and dedication led him to become the General Foreman of Mine Maintenance with Teck Highland Valley Copper. Randy was also a proud member of CIM South Central Branch.
Riding his road bike was his favorite pastime. He would always been seen riding around town and after ALS took that away from him, you could see him cruising in his bright green wheelchair, “The Spermobile”. Summer was spending time with family and friends around the “Booze Lagoon”, and winter was Florida or Mexico where Randy and Nancy had planned to retire. His other passions in life were his sports teams, the Miami Dolphins, and the Winnipeg Jets and on some weekends his Fantasy Football team. Even when there weren’t any Jets, he was still their biggest fan. When the Jets returned to Winnipeg he was one of the lucky ones to be at their first home game.

Calder and R. Mosewich, the ALS Society of BC as well as all the other caregivers for making this journey a bit easier for him. A Kamloops man facing a string of serious charges after allegedly loading a handgun, pointing it at a woman’s face and pulling the trigger will spend Christmas in a rehab centre instead of a jail cell. John Dawson Scott Attrell is facing one count each of attempted murder with a firearm, possessing a prohibited firearm with ammunition, pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possessing a prohibited weapon and careless storage of a firearm. The 36-year-old was taken into custody in a high-risk takedown on Ord Road on Nov. 15. He appeared in Kamloops provincial court for a bail hearing on Thursday, Dec. 19. Court was told Attrell had previously entered a motel room on Columbia Street and demanded money for drugs from a female friend. Crown prosecutor Will Burrows said he became involved in an altercation with the woman, pulled out a handgun, loaded the weapon and pointed it at her head. “He had pulled the trigger while the gun was pointed at her, but nothing happened,� Burrows said. Attrell then left the motel, Burrows said, and officers tracked down his vehicle near Attrell’s home on Ord Road. After he was taken into custody, a search of Attrell’s home turned up an additional five guns — including two semiautomatic rifles with illegal after-market modifications — and ammunition, court heard. Defence lawyer Sheldon Tate said his client suffered a serious back injury 12 years ago and was prescribed morphine, which led to an opiate addiction — something he satisfies with heroin, court heard. Tate said Attrell has been conditionally accepted into a treatment centre in 59 Mile House, should he be released on bail. Kamloops provin-

Council OK with Moly-Cop expansion Kamloops city council won’t be raising objections to an expansion at Moly-Cop in Dallas that will almost double the emissions at the manufacturing plant. Moly-Cop, which produces steel balls used in the mining industry for grinding, wants to add a second manufacturing facility at its 8420 Dallas Dr. site, which would run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for about 325 days each year. As part of the permitting process, the city is being asked by the Ministry of Environment whether it has any technical objections to the project. City environmental services manager Jen Fretz said the new plan would have a discharge rate of just over 895 metres cubed per minute, which Fretz said is on the low end for an industrial project. The current plant has a nearly identical discharge rate. Fretz said it doesn’t appear the project will have much of an effect on the city’s airshed. “It’s in the smaller range of emissions, so it’s not going to add significantly to the existing contaminates in the air,� she said. “This is best available technology and it’s naturalgas fuelled.� Coun. Pat Wallace said the expansion will give other investors confidence in Kamloops. “I’m really happy to see Molly-Cop make this investment,� she said. “It’s good for our community.� However, Coun. Donovan Cavers is concerned with Fretz’s suggestion there might be a level of air pollution the airshed can bear. “I have a hard time accepting there’s sort of an acceptable pollution limit,� he said. “These are the kind of reports where I wish there was an abstain button.� As a condition of support, Fretz said the city plans to ask Moly-Cop to conduct air modelling in the Dallas area to look at how various pollutants, including TransCanada Highway traffic , are impacting air quality.

I
THOUGHT I WOULD close out 2013 and start 2014 with a review of a real surprise — the Hyundai Genesis 3.8 GT Coupe. It’s got more power than a BMW 335i or a Nissan 370Z, but it also gets up to 7.0L/100 km highway with its eight-speed automatic, something its competitors also lack. With 348 hp (295 lb/ft of torque), it is also surprisingly fast especially with that eight-speed auto giving seamless shifts even under full throttle. With a power-to-weight ratio of 4.5:1 and weight distribution of 56/44 front/rear (plus standard limited slip differential) it is well balanced. And yet the 3.8 GT remains something of a wallflower. Now there are no shortage of rear-drive performance cars to go around like 450 hp Corvettes and 400 hp Porsche 911s, but they don’t start anywhere as low as $36,999 for the six-speed manual or $38,799 for the automatic as tested here. I should note prices are based on the 2013 model, but specifications are unchanged. This what you call bang for the buck. We saw the Genesis Coupe as a 2010 model with the first taste of Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language. For the current model, the signature look has been liberally applied. The overall shape is the same but it is now more flowing and aggressive, starting with the much-changed nose, grille hood with integral fog lamps and available LED daytime running lights. There are three trim levels on the Genesis Coupe in its 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder form, but we are interested here in the fourth version, with 3.8litre V6 that now has direct fuel injection for a gain of 42 hp and 29 lb/ft or 14/11 per cent respectively. Hyundai claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time in the low five second range, but I had no chance to find out because I did in-city driving for the most part. Top speed is limited to 240 km/h. Besides direct fuel injection, the 3.8 GT benefits from Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) plus an interesting two-stage Variable Intake System (VIS) that aids in deeper breathing depending on demand. It also runs on regular or premium fuel. The sound of the engine is wonderful to hear and I thought it was using some kind of

Then I learned in the information supplied to me by Hyundai there is an acoustic tunnel that is tuned and emits the engine sound from the intake manifold straight into the cabin. That’s very clever and a whole lot cheaper than remote flaps. And all this is further abetted by the large bore, quad exhaust pipes. Another surprise is the inclusion of a three-level Electronic Stability Control (ESP) that the driver can select for full on, partial which allows the driver to override the powertrain and, finally, full off which is really just for closed-circuit events such as autocross or track days. All Genesis Coupe models feature standard four-channel ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to optimize brake performance under various loading conditions. The system also includes Brake Assist, which provides maximum ABS-level braking force when a panic stop is detected. Interior safety features include driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags along with front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, and active front head restraints. Another nice driver touch
is found in the middle of the centre stack in the form of three gauges that give (from left) fuel consumption rate, torque (boost in the 2.0-litre T) and oil temperature. The main instrument cluster now features electroluminescent gauges for a premium ambiance and better at-a-glance readability. A new driver-side walk-in assist function has been added for more convenient rear seat access from the driver’s side. Handy seatbelt guides make it easier for front passengers to buckle up. Suspension consists of MacPherson struts with dual links at the front and a five-link setup at the rear. On the 3.8 GT this is upgraded with seven per cent firmer front spring rates and 11 per cent firmer rear spring rates matched with re-calibrated damping rates. The standard 23/19 mm front/ rear stabilizer bars are one mm larger on the 3.8 GT to decrease body roll as the driver nears the limit. Fitted as standard on all Genesis Coupes are improved low-velocity-control dampers for refined ride comfort coupled with improved body control.

Lastly braking is also improved on the 3.8 GT with Brembo four-piston calipers on 13.4-inch rotors front and 13.0-inch rotors rear. So the ingredients are all there, but the proof of the pudding is always how it behaves on the road. Seating is low as expected in a sporting coupe, but the rear deck is high to provide for 332 litres of trunk space so adjusting your mirrors is important. The eight-speed automatic includes paddle shifters with manual mode. I’m just getting used to seven-speed systems and here’s Hyundai with an eight-speed showing how swiftly the Koreans seize new technology and build it into their cars and not just the expensive ones. The feeling at launch is of the car being “four square” on the road, in other words nicely planted for whatever is down the road. There is no launch control but traction control with ESP doesn’t allow wheel spin or crabbing at the rear. But the good part is the nice sound of the exhaust that adds to the sensation that you are driving a very sporting machine. I fear for coming generations who will only know the whirr of electric motors. Entering a tight corner, instinctively you want to lift your right foot. But you don’t have to as the suspension really does keep roll to a minimum and the widely spaced tire patch makes for a stabile entry and exit. I did not try the ESP-off scenario because flailing around on city streets is a stupid thing to do. Those who have tried it on the track say it adds immensely to the fun of driving the Genesis Coupe. This is a great package for the person who truly enjoys what I call motoring as opposed to merely driving. If you are considering a sporty coupe in 2014, the Genesis 3.8 GT is worthy of a test drive.

T THE WHL’S Christmas break, the Kamloops Blazers are last in the Western Conference and 15 points out of playoff position. The Blue and Orange endured a 13-game losing streak — the longest in franchise history — between Nov. 5 and Dec. 11. “It’s been disappointing,” said Dave Hunchak, the Blazers’ head coach. “With the turnover that we’ve had and the number of new bodies that we’ve got in our lineup, it’s been difficult. We’ve been challenged to score goals.” The Blazers are last in the league in goals for, with 90 after 36 games. Kamloops lost nine of its best players after the 2012-2013 campaign, including top-gun forwards Colin Smith and JC Lipon, both of whom are now playing in the American Hockey League. “Our direction changed when we knew Smith and Lipon weren’t coming back,” said Craig Bonner, the Blazers’ general manager. “We made some deals and we’re a young hockey team right now.” The most notable Blazer transaction came on Oct. 22, when Bonner dealt forward
Tim Bozon and defenceman Landon Cross to the Kootenay Ice. Kamloops is 5-18 since the trade. “Stat-wise and in the standings, obviously, it hasn’t been very good,” Bonner said of the first half of the season. “What I’ve seen happen is we’ve found a way to lose a lot of close hockey games. “When you have an older team, you find ways to win those games.”

The Blazers might get even younger before the season is out, with the Jan. 10 trade deadline just around the corner. “We’re not going to trade any younger players and I don’t see us bringing in any older players,” Bonner said. “We have some needs to fill and, if we can fill some spots, we’re going to do that.” Right atop the list of Blazers who are likely wondering if they will be packing their bags is Sam Grist, a 20-yearold defenceman who many teams would like to have in their lineup heading into the postseason. The other 20-yearolds — Tyson Ness and
Joe Kornelsen — might be desirable assets and speedster forward Aspen Sterzer, 19, could be on the trade block. Fan-favourite Chase Souto, 19, is having a strong year and word around Mark Recchi Way is the Blazers would like to have him back next season. “It’s pretty quiet right now with Christmas,” Bonner said. “Things usually pick up when the Mac’s tournament [the Mac’s AAA Midget Hockey Tournament in Calgary] gets going.” The Mac’s tourney gets underway on Thursday, Dec. 26. Kamloops broke its 13-game losing skid with a win over Regina on a six-game Eastern road swing and the Blazers rattled off two more wins in succession, beating Prince Albert and Saskatoon. “With the amount of ice time that these young guys have gotten, the 17-year-olds in particular, they should be getting better, which they are,” Hunchak said. “We went .500 on that road trip and those guys were big contributors.” Bonner is looking for his team to build on the success it found on the Eastern swing. “You can kind of see the light at the end of the tunnel,” the Blazers’ GM said. “When you lose that many players, that’s the direction we had to go.”

Classics’ medal haul The Kamloops Classic Swim Club hosted its 21st annual MJB Classic Invitational Swim Meet from Dec. 13 to Dec. 15 at the Tournament Capital Centre, with 500 swimmers from 17 clubs in B.C. and Alberta attending. Kamloops swimmers won 65 medals — 22 gold, 18 silver and 25 bronze. Classics’ coach Brad Dalke noted the following outstanding performances: • Keana Smart in the 10-and-under girls won eight gold medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 50m back and 100m back, 50m fly, 100m breaststroke and 200m IM. • Eloise Ladyman in the 14-and-under girls won the 50m, 100m and 200m fly events while qualifying for the Canadian Age Group Championships this summer and the Western Canadian Swimming Championships in New Westminster in February. • Michael Dagasso in the 10-and-under boys won the 50m fly and 100m fly events and qualified for the B.C. AAA provincials in the 100m fly and 100m freestyle. • Ethan Phillips in
the 14-and-under boys won the 200m and 400m freestyle and set new club records while winning the 100m and 200m backstrokes. He also set a new club record in the 50m backstroke while placing second. • Colin Gilbert in the 15-and-over boys won the 200m fly while achieving the qualifying standard to attend the Commonwealth Games Swimming Trials this spring in Victoria. The swim was also a new club record. Gilbert also set new club records in the 100m fly, 400m freestyle and 200m freestyle. • Meaghan Frenks in the senior girls won the 50m breaststroke and snared a silver in the 200m breastroke. • Ryley McRae, 12, had six topeight finishes over the weekend, five of which were podium performances. McRae also made the 13-andunder boys AAA provincial championship times in the 200,m 400m and 1,500m freestyle, 100m and 200m fly and 200m and 400m IM. • Maia Vitoratos swam a 50m freestyle with an AA provincial time standard toward the AA Provincial Short Course

Moss gathering gold Liam Moss of Kamloops polished off an impressive year with a pair of gold medals at the Sport Jiu Jitsu International Federation Worlds Tournament, which wrapped up in Los Angeles on
Sunday, Dec. 15. Moss, 14, placed first in two divisions — the worlds teen featherweight Gi division and the NoGi submission grappling division. The tournament was held at the Walter
Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach and featured about 1,900 international competitors. The South Kamloops secondary student has trained at Kamloops Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Aberdeen
Judo Academy and the North Kamloops and Valleyview secondary wrestling clubs. Moss picked up 28 gold medals in 2013, winning titles in Alberta, B.C., Washington State, Oregon and California.

The elves in Santa’s Gary Harker’s workshop By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
When the guys get together in Gary Harker’s workshop, there’s the usual light-hearted banter, but then they get down to work. It’s all about the toys. They will spend the next several hours putting together trucks and cars and wooden things that rock and roll and can provide hours of fun for children. When they’re done, the toys will be boxed up and given away — more than 500 of them this year alone. Harker, chairman of the Kamloops Woodworkers Guild’s toy committee, said members will do all the prep work — the marking and cutting and sanding and, sometimes, assembly — throughout the year. Often, they’ll get just to assembly stage and then take it all to his Paul Lake home for a day of finishing and fun. About 200 of the toys are now with Christmas Amalgamated, waiting to find new homes, while others have gone to the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter, the Spencer Court
and Children’s Circle day cares, Family Tree Resource Centre, the New Life Mission and, this year, the Kamloops branch of the Salvation Army. In the past, toys went to the House of Ruth women’s shelter, but it was closed earlier this year and the Army chosen to fill that spot. Talks are underway to also make toys for the waiting room at Royal Inland Hospital. The guild has always been involved in community service, Harker said, and gets many requests through the year for toys. Committee members get an idea of the ages that will be getting the toys and, if they’ve worked with the organization in the past, find out which toys were most popular and which ones really didn’t generate the big smiles. After that, “usually about the first couple of weeks in November, we fly at the toys steady for four or five hours a day,” Harker said. The committee benefits from the prodigious output of committee member Terry Shupe, who has been known to create hundreds of toys each year.

More room for dispatchers in BCAS office By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
The men and women who field about 100,000 of the calls for emergency medical care made in the province each year have a lot more elbow room these days. Earlier this year, the Kamloops Dispatch Operations Centre underwent a $1.2 million renovation that doubled the available space for B.C. Ambulance Service dispatchers to field calls, arrange patient transfers and co-ordinate with ambulance teams. “This is a fabulous facility we have now,” said Supt. Doug Garland, centre manager. “All our pieces of the dispatch operations can be here together. My office is here, the quality operations branch is here in the same facility, just off the floor.” Before the renovation, some of those pieces were housed in separate buildings, on opposite sides of B.C. Ambulance’s Dalhousie Street lot.

Those pieces that were in the same room weren’t always set up in the ideal way. “We had a very small space that was not designed specifically for emergency dispatching,” Garland said. “It was very linear and it caused some problems with our workflows. It wasn’t as ideal as it should have been. “So, now we’ve been able to assemble our dispatching staff around
our supervisor, so our supervisor can monitor what happens.” The centre has room for 12 attendants to take calls at any time, though usually only nine are required during peak emergency calling hours. A backup centre offers room for another 12 operators in critical situations. The Kamloops centre is responsible mainly for calls made between Hope and the
Alberta border, though it sometimes handles calls from the Lower Mainland when needed.
When a call comes in, a dispatcher will enter the address of the emergency into a computer, which is immediately sent to another staffer whose sole responsibility for the day is to send crews to the scene, allowing the dispatcher to continue assisting the caller. Garland said it’s key that callers know where they are calling from so crews can be dispatched as soon as possible. “There’s nothing more frustrating than to have a 911 call where people are trying to help and people don’t know where they’re calling from,” he said. “It’s not like what you might see on television in the fiction world, where we can
instantly pinpoint where a cell phone is. “It’s important to stay on the phone even if you’ve misdialled. We want to make that contact.” Garland said 911
callers should also be prepared to answer questions about the status of any injured parties, and need to stay on the line until an operator says it is alright to hang up the phone.

The HarvesƟng Supervisor is responsible for the compliance, management and maintenance of harvesƟng, hauling and service contracts of the operaƟons as well as managing contractor performance to ensure the proper volume, size, mix, species and margin are delivered to the manufacturing faciliƟes.

Forest Technicians are responsible for assisƟng in the eīecƟve delivery of Regional Ɵmber development goals. Working under the direcƟon of a Timber Development Forester, as part of USW Local I-423, the incumbent will conduct forest development acƟviƟes (Road/Cut block Layout, Timber Cruising, Site Plans, Cuƫng Permits) in a safe, Ɵmely, cost eīecƟve, and professional manner.
