As the members of Kamloops’ new co-op home began to move into their custom-built West Battle Street property earlier this year, it became apparent there were going to be some questions the group of seven would have to answer. For one, whose couches would get to stay in the communal living room? And how do you downsize five households worth of kitchen equipment into

‘We can live in the community a lot longer by being in this kind of a supportive group environment.’ one set of cupboards? “This whole kitchen was chock-a-block,” recalls Robyn Hines from her seat on one of the three sofas in the house’s spacious openplan kitchen and living room. “We had couches stacked up, furniture lined up. Man, it was crazy. I remember

thinking, ‘Are we ever going to come to a place where we’re kind of organized?’” A little more than three months later, the furniture question has been mostly sorted out, though a basement room intended as studio space is still flush with unpacked boxes and unused chairs.

It’s as good a metaphor as any for the seven members of the co-op, which refers to itself as the Rare Birds, who admit that, despite the rewards, returning to roommate life well beyond their 20s hasn’t always been a smooth ride. The Birds got their start at the

2011 Kamloops Film Festival, when Mary Jordan, Valerie MacKay-Greer and Allen Ciastko decided to take in a showing of the eco-documentary How to Boil a Frog, which included a look at co-operative housing in Vancouver. While the three had kicked around the idea of a housing co-op in Kamloops, the film inspired them to take the conversation more seriously and look for more interested members.

The death of a man who apparently jumped from the parkade at Royal Inland Hospital on Sunday, June 15, is being investigated by the province’s Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIOBC). The IIOBC is mandated to conduct investigations into officer-related incidents of death or serious harm in order to determine whether or not an officer may have committed an offence. “It’s not that there has been an allegation of wrongdoing,” IIOBC spokesman Owen Court said. “We’re there because the Police Act dictates we investigate.” Court said that, according to the Kamloops RCMP, shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday, its officers were called to Royal Inland Hospital in response to a report of an 18-year-old man threatening to jump from the parkade. Court said officers were talking to the man when a physical altercation took place. The man broke free from the officers and reportedly jumped from the third level of the parkade He sustained serious injuries and was immediately hospitalized. but later died in hospital. Court said there is no timeline associated with the investigation. Nancy Serwo, interim administrator at RIH, said counselling is being provided to the family of the man and to staff who were involved in the situation. She said the hospital and the Interior Health Authority are co-operating with the IIOBC and RIH has begun its own review of the circumstances involving the man. “But, right now, our hearts go out to everyone was involved and especially the family,” she said.

STUDENTS STAGING ‘EXAM STUDY SIT-IN’ Student Lila Iris Long and her friends are staging an “exam study sit-in” at the Beattie School of the Arts secondary campus on Thursday, June 19. “My friends and I were discussing the topic and we feel that the students of the province aren’t being put into thought,” Lila said. “Both the strike and lockout affect us 100 per cent. We get little help in class since there are many of us in one room and we cannot seek help from teachers due to the lockout.” Lila and her friends are inviting other students who will be writing provincial exams to come to Beattie between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. with their textbooks. “We believe that these five hours spent will help release a great load off some shoulders,” Lila said. “We will help each other prepare while the teachers cannot.”

Chase secondary teacher Simon Stell was among those lining Columbia Street during a noon rally on Monday, June 16. Teachers set to start full-scale strike today By Dale Bass

STAFF REPORTER

dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

With no bargaining plans announced, a provincewide strike by teachers is expected to begin today (June 17). B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) president Jim Iker said the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) did not respond to new union proposals submitted on Friday, June 13, until late on Sunday, June 15, noting Education Minister Peter Fassbender said last week his government “will still be at the table 24/7 to get a negotiated settlement.” The new union package included a revised wage-increase proposal of eight per cent over five years, with a $5,000 per teacher signing bonus. Previously, the BCTF had proposed a 12 per cent increase over

14-073.17_WaterHeater_10.3125x2-P1.indd 1

four years, with the government’s bargaining agent, the BCPSEA, offering 7.3 per cent over six years and a $1,200 per teacher signing bonus if a deal is reached by the end of June. When the BCPSEA returned to bargaining late on Sunday, Iker said, it had changed its wage proposal to seven per cent over six years. “It is almost unheard of to backtrack on a wage offer,” Iker said, pointing the finger at Premier Christy Clark. In fact, throughout his press conference, Iker barely spoke of the BCPSEA, constantly referring to Fassbender and Clark as the people controlling the government’s bargaining strategy. However, Peter Cameron, the BCPSEA’s chief negotiator, said Iker is wrong in that assertion because the BCPSEA’s original wage offer of 7.3 per cent included taking .75 per cent out of benefits.

The union didn’t like that, Cameron said, “so we backed off on that. The wage would have left us at 6.5 per cent, but we added half a per cent and now offered seven per cent. “How is that going backward?” Cameron also disputed Iker’s claim the weekend was “a real opportunity to fix a lot of what they broke, but there was an unwillingness to listen to new ideas. The government sat on their hands for two days.” Cameron said the union leader “misrepresented the pace,” noting the two sides are now at the stage of bargaining where they need to take each others’ proposals “and work hard on them.” He said the BCPSEA tabled new language on some minor issues, hoping to get them resolved so the two sides can tackle the bigger issues. “That’s the give and take of

bargaining . . . We were there if they had come back with another proposal.” Iker complained the BCPSEA proposed language that would allow either side to terminate the contract when an appeal of a court ruling on class size and composition is heard. He said the union suggested a new education fund tied to that government appeal of the court ruling it lost earlier this year when the B.C. Supreme Court Justice Susan Griffin found the provincial Liberal government violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 2002. That was the year the government stripped teachers of the right to bargain class size and composition. The government has lost that decision twice and has launched another appeal. Iker said the fund would be used by school districts and teachers to

allocate specialized teaching staff who work with special-needs students, noting any dispute would go to binding arbitration. Iker said the proposal is “an out” for the government because it also faces potentially thousands of grievances if the latest appeal is rejected. Cameron, however, said the issue is simple: “They don’t like our position. I get that. We don’t like theirs. “But, to misrepresent the process isn’t helping. “The union’s communications strategy is getting in the way of getting a deal.” Iker said the union’s executive committee would be meeting yesterday (June 16) to decide on its next action, but added “a strike is imminent.” The union served 72 hours’ strike notice last week. Students in Kamloops were last in class on Thursday, June 12.

RareBirds share more than living space X From A1

By 2012, they were at city hall, asking for permits to build a house unlike anything else on the market. Each of the six living units on the West Battle property comes with its own bedroom, bathroom and closet and storage space. The rest of the house — two laundry rooms, kitchen and living space, a rec room, a meditation room and various nooks, balconies and yard space — is communal. Single members or couples purchase a share of the home, spreading out the cost. Should they choose to move out, they can sell their living unit and share in the co-op to a new member. Living space isn’t the only thing the Birds share. Members are responsible for providing an evening meal on a rotating basis, along with other chores. Decisions about the home are made by consensus either via email or at bi-weekly meetings. During the day, the Birds come and go without interacting much — many work and retired members tend to be active volunteers. But, so far, the evening meal is a social event. “There’s often times when you sit down to dinner and you’ve got something on after dinner and it’s like oh, I don’t want to go. Can I phone and cancel?” Sandi Ceccon jokes.

While she was struggling with the unpacking, Hines says it was those early meals together that helped make the six weeks it took to get the Birds’ pantry in order more bearable. “It’s being with these people that I love and cooking together, eating together, having a glass of wine together. That’s the highlight,” she says. “Those first few weeks, I kept going, ‘Yes, this is what I signed up for.’” For her husband Dan Hines, the consensus has been one of the bigger challenges of the new setup. While he and Robyn were able to make decisions quickly in their house, getting seven people to weigh in doesn’t

happen on the same schedule. Learning to factor in the feelings of six other people is also a learning experience. “I have a wake behind my boat and I can rock other people as I’m racing down the river,” he says. Then there are the quirks that come with living with any new person: Different sleep schedules, different personalities and the responsibilities that come with keeping up a house that holds more people than the place in which you lived before. “We just visited our grandkids and I laughed to myself because, a couple of times, one of the boys had to go into their room because they were

having a meltdown,” says MacKay-Greer to laughter. “And I thought, ‘Wow, that’s just so familiar.’” But, the members of Chez Bird say the rough patches are worth what they hope to achieve long term — a community of like-minded people who can help each other through difficult times and avoid some of the perils that can come with growing older on one’s own. “For me, it’s a lot about aging in place and being able to avoid assisted living and the sort of institutionalization that goes along with that,” says Dan. “We can live in the community a lot longer by being in this kind of a supportive group environment.” In the meantime, “living in community” can be as simple as offering a ride to a Bird whose spouse has claimed the car for the day, making an extra smoothie for a housemate in the morning or watching the house while other Birds are out of town on vacation. “What we’re trying to do here is live in a way that doesn’t allow us to become inflexible or stuck in our ways,” says Robyn. “We want to grow as people and learn and continue growing until the day we take our last breath. “That’s what we signed up for.”

The basic technology involved with extra corporeal shockwave technology has been used for decades on millions of people. Certain musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions have a hard time healing due to the development of unhealthy, disorganized tissue in the area of injury. Over time, this dysfunctional tissue limits the body’s ability to repair and heal itself. Research has shown Shockwave Therapy to be highly effective in treating musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions be stimulating the body’s own natural healing response.

Saudi student faces assault charge By Cam Fortems STAFF REPORTER

cam@kamloopsthisweek.com

The 29-year-old victim of a poolcue attack by a fellow Saudi TRU student is now facing charges after allegedly brandishing a knife against a woman. Abdulaziz Alhedaib is charged with assault with a weapon and possession a weapon — a knife — for a dangerous purpose. The Crown alleges the incident occurred on May 4. Charges were laid on June 12. The court file is classified as a partner assault. Alhedaib was the victim in an attack at Cactus Jack’s nightclub in 2012. Fellow Saudi student Yousef

Almotairi was convicted of ramming a pool cue through Alhedaib’s eye following an argument between the two. Almotairi was given a six-month jail sentence and has since been deported. The attack caused Alhedaib permanent brain damage. He walks with assistance of a cane and suffers from a number of physical problems, including partial paralysis. Alhedaib’s story of the incident at Cactus Jack’s and his recovery was featured in the May 30 edition of KTW. Alhedaib was in court on Monday, June 16, for a first appearance and has yet to enter a plea. None of the allegations have been proven or heard in court.

Kids’ theatre Punch and Judy group seeks live at outdoor financial Armstrong venue support online A local summer theatre program for children is hoping to expand its free family entertainment this year to North Kamloops and is seeking local financial support. The Kamloops Arts Council’s Rivertown Players has started a crowd-funding campaign online and is trying to raise $5,000. As of press time, they had raised $275. Their theatre program is geared towards free family entertainment, running in its 14th year. They are set to perform five days a week — Tuesday to Saturday — throughout July and August, with their premiere performance at Art in the Park on Canada Day. While the group has historically performed at Riverside Park, the show has expanded this year to the North Shore. Heidi Verwey will mentor the troupe this year, while Allandra Barton, Jessica Rowat and Taran Waterous make up the group. For more information about the troupe, visit them online at tinyurl.com/rivertownplayers. Donate to their cause by going online to gofundme. com/8tdvjg. Donations are encouraged through a variety of sponsorship incentives —$25 earns a high five from one of the actors. A $100 donation will allow the donor to have a character named for someone. A $250 donation gets a 45-minute custom performance. A $500 donation also earns the performance, plus a director’s chair signed by the cast. The troupe is also seeking a title sponsor at a cost of $1,000.

Caravan Farm Theatre in Armstrong presents The Tragical Comedy of Punch and Judy from July 22 to Aug. 24 at the outdoor venue near Vernon. It’s the story of Mr. Punch, his wife Judy, the

Devil, Pretty Polly and many other characters known as part of the Punchy and Judy puppet show, with Judy falling in love with another man and Punch fighting to save their marriage. The production, a com-

edy designed for the family, features large-scale puppets, a three-piece band, horsedrawn carts with unfolding stages and plumed ponies. The cast includes Paul Braunstein, Sarah May Redmond, Christopher Hung

and Colin Doyle. Shows are nightly at 7:30 p.m.; there are no performances on Mondays. Tickets can be bought online at ticketseller.ca or by calling 1-866-3111011.

ES Barker has an act of his

own. It’s part comedy and part magic — “but not the traditional rabbits and hats” sort of magic, said the 28-year-old Vancouver performer. He dubs himself a stunt magician and the title seems appropriate. “I like to do bigger stuff that’s a little bit more dangerous or just physical,” he said. “My shows can have baseball bats and tomahawks.” “It’s just kind of my own style of show.” The stand-up comedy portion of his show comes from life experience, but he developed his magic skills while working for the City of Surrey on and off for about six years. He said lunch breaks were spent in his truck, where he began reading magic books as a way to pass the time. Since then, Barker has appeared on Canada’s Got Talent, on the Comedy Network and recently sold out Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre. “It wasn’t until I was 24 or so that I thought, ‘Holy smokes, this could actually be

Wes Barker, 28, is not a typical magician. Audience members can expect stunts with knives, tomahawks or baseball bats when he performs live at the Dirty Jersey on Friday, June 20.

Tickets include a free game of bowling next door at Bowlertime. The show begins at 8 p.m. a career path for me,’” he said. “It’s been really well received.” He called his career path ironic because he studied business in university and ended up in the performing arts. Meanwhile, his brother had studied theatre and drama and is now a salesman.

“I always call him for advice on stage writing and he calls me for advice on contracts,” Barker said with a laugh. He said his performance in Kamloops on Friday, June 20, will be edgy. “Right off the top they’ll probably see me swallow a four-foot bal-

loon,” he said. And audience members can expect to get involved because he has no assistants. Barker might take a credit card without someone knowing or make a straight-jacket escape. He doesn’t want to give away too much, but a couple things are fairly certain of his show. “I usually end my show in my underwear,” he said. “People go and they realize, oh man this isn’t just Uncle Bob’s magic out of a hat.”

Funding a shelter in India By Dale Bass

STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

A few years ago, Donna Bishop, a social worker in the city, was heading to India to do some work for a Vancouver-based charity. She was asked to check out a nongovernment organization there, the Trans Himalayan Society, that had asked for some funding support. The experience changed Bishop, someone already with a deep understanding of the sadder and more-challenged side of life. “I was blown away by what they were doing there, she said of the work being done in a part of the world few understand. The more Bishop learned, the more deter-

mined she was to do something to help the workers there with their goal to create a shelter for women, much like the one in Kamloops run by the YMCAYWCA. Together, Bishop — through the Warren Atkinson Society in Kamloops — and the local shelter are starting on that fundraising by hosting a dinner at the Flavours of India on Thursday, June 26. There will be two seatings at the restaurant at 550 West Columbia St. — one at 5:30 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. Diners will be shown a visual tour of life in the Himalayan hills and can shop at an Indian bazaar. Entertainment will also be provided. The Himalayan area

she has focused on has an economy largely based on agriculture. The men tend to head into the cities for work, leaving the women to tend the fields. Often, Bishop said, the men come home with drug addictions and sexually transmitted diseases — and the lives of the women become worse “and they have no power, nowhere to go. Even to physically flee to an unknown future means navigating footpaths through the hills. The mother of one of the social workers there has given the group land — in itself, a unique reality as property normally doesn’t pass through the generations on the matriarchal side. In this case, the

women’s husband is dead. “The mom said she can do this to make a change. “She wants her daughter’s work to continue, Bishop said. With the land in place, money is needed to build something, ideally a place with room for 10 beds, with a couple of social workers to provide programming and support and a security guard for protection. It’s a cost Bishop estimated at about $50,000, plus another $10,000 to $15,000 a year to run the facility. Tickets are $40, of which $20 will generate a tax receipt. They can be bought at the restaurant or by calling Bishop at 250851-6163.

With little wind on the Nicola Lake on a recent weekend, sea cadets from around the province practiced their steering and balance by being towed behind a Zodiac motor boat. Chief Petty Officer First Class Daryl-Ann Rawluk shares shows off the passion she has for the sea cadets by wearing it. Michael Potestio photos/Merrit Herald

Her passion on her sleeve By Michael Potestio MERRITT HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

Atop the cool, black waters of Nicola Lake, sea cadet corps from around B.C. participated in the third annual Anchors Away Interior Nautical Weekend at the Kamloops Sail Association in Quilchena. Eighty youths ages 12 to 18 attended from corps based in Nelson, Trail, Ashcroft, Kelowna, North Vancouver and Kamloops, the host corps. Cadets practised and competed in power boating, canoeing, sailing and physical fitness. The corps were broken up into four random divisions and awards were given out for top cadet — which went to Kamloops cadet Roger Pomeroy — and best division. Kamloops Sea Cadet chief petty officer first class Daryl-Ann Rawluk moved to Kamloops last August from Lorette, Man., just south of Winnipeg. “I was looking for some kind of adventure, I suppose,” Rawluk said. “I grew up in a small town all my life, so I wanted to come somewhere that was a city, but I didn’t really want to

stay in Winnipeg or in Manitoba.” She said she decided on Kamloops because her boyfriend, whom she met through the cadets, is from Cache Creek. Growing up in a small town, Rawluk said she had essentially played every sport that was available and ,at the

age of 12, decided to give sea cadets a try. Rawluk said that when she joined sea cadets, she was shy and it taught her how to be a leader. “I just loved it,” she said. Her passion for the sea cadets is worn on her sleeve — literally. The 18-year-old has

two tattoos on the inside of her forearms. The one on the right has text surrounding a ship’s steering wheel that reads, “Be the one to guide me.” Her left arm boasts a picture of an anchor with surrounding text that reads, “But never hold me down.” “Cadets has been a huge part of my life for the last seven years and made me into the person I am now,” Rawluk said. She said the anchor symbolizes the challenge of trying to juggle cadets with the rest of her life. The three-day nautical weekend itself had all the military structure one would expect. Cadets ate army rations for lunch and camped out in green, military tents set up along the shores of the lake. Junior cadets took orders from the seniors who were supervised by officers such as Adam Lundgren. When it comes to sea cadets, Lundgren said youth learn values of citizenship. “It’s all about just making people better in any way possible,” Lundgren said, noting the event’s number of cadets doubled last year’s total of 40.

You may receive all medical care and medications at no cost during the study and may be reimbursed for travel. This study will be held in Kamloops. For more information please call 1.888.490.4320 or visit www.HealthResearch.ca/asthma-kamloops

Losing Weight Has Never Been Easier!

After allowing the pounds to creep on and the ensuing health issues I knew I had to do something. A friend told me about Powertone. I look forward to the twice a week half hour sessions. Since my first appointment I have lost over 15 pounds and 31/2 inches off of my abdomen, 3 inches off of my hips and 21/2 off of each thigh. I feel better and movement is easier. The training is in a private studio and Irene immediately put me at ease. Her encouragement and experience makes each session a joy! I highly recommend Powertone. Hazel Green, KAMLOOPS

The theme is science fiction — “To Boldly Read What You Have Never Read Before” — and the grand-prize draw prize is a Kobo Aura high-definition e-reader. The club begins on July 1 and continues to Aug. 31 and, while science fiction is the focus, any genre can be read. Participants get one entry in the draw for every book review they do, to a maximum of 10. Register online at tnrdlib.ca.

District grants support 21st-century learning

I

N THE SPRING of 2013, School District 73 announced $100,000 in funding was available to schools and district programs to advance creativity, innovation, and curriculum. To receive a grant, individual classroom teachers, groups of teachers and district staff members were invited to apply. Applicants were required to include educational research to back up their proposed initiatives, along with a detailed budget. The district’s education committee received 31 worthy applications and was tasked with choosing only 10 to receive grants to meet the budget. The selection process yielded worthy proposals, yet members of the education committee — including myself — were disappointed we could not have awarded funding to all requests. Selected projects and initiatives varied in concept, but all shared one common goal — to move for-

Joan Cowden View from the SCHOOL BOARD ward with 21st-century learning. The majority of applications requested grants to purchase advanced technology for educational initiatives. IPads were purchased for inclusive literacy programs delivered at South Sa-Hali elementary. A similar joint project between the learning-assistance teachers at Westmount and Pacific Way elementary schools requested iPads based on their unique multi-sensory technology. The teachers anticipate the technology and related applications will help engage reluctant writers. Several other successful applicants requested funds to help students learn

more about technology as a whole. Barriere elementary purchased tablets for students to create digital portfolios — demonstrating their use of reading, writing and communication skills, while Westsyde secondary used funds to develop the school’s digital-media lab. The lab has been designed to improve on existing library resources and provides students with digital literacy skills. Clearwater secondary purchased iPads to help students complete distance learning and staff from that school have also developed classroom websites to support changes in instruction delivery. Pinantan elementary’s successful application had a different focus — a request for funds to support an outdoor-education program and required equipment so students could participate in field trips and exploration of the area’s lakes and wetlands. Arthur Stevenson elementary had its application accepted

for two separate school-wide projects, one toward library upgrades to improve numeracy and reading curriculum and the other focused on technology, including purchase of smart boards, laptops, projectors and iPads. Three district-wide applications were also accepted: • Professional development and resources for teachers and librarians to learn about project-based learning approaches through workshops. • Strategy for teaching linguistic awareness to early-intermediate students in rural areas focused on resources for vocabulary and comprehension improvements. • The Chromebook project, which includes 32 Google Chromebooks purchased to provide month-long loans to teachers wanting to integrate web-based tools in the classroom. Grant recipients will be presenting their projects to the board of education during meetings through June.

BMW i3 drives for sustainability By Jim Robinson

METROLAND MEDIA Wheels.ca

Maybe, just maybe, BMW has found the delicate balance between those who think they want a pure electric car and those who are prepared to live with one and its limitations. The BMW i3 allelectric sedan has a starting price of $36,450 (after $8,500 Ontario rebate), is guaranteed for eight years and is fully recyclable at the end of its useable life. And it’s a BMW. The i3 was designed from the outset as an all-electric car. That means no real need for an engine, gas tank or transmission tunnel to eat away at space or add weight. BMW calls the concept LifeDrive and it consists of two components — the Life Module (passenger cabin) and Drive Module (propulsion). The Drive Module is a 100 per cent aluminum platform and houses a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery as well as the front MacPherson strut and rear five-link suspension. The 450pound battery is placed between the two axles at the rear and “plants” the wheels on the road surface. Drive comes from a 170 hp (184 lb/ft of torque) electric motor that weighs just 110 lbs. located at the driver side rear over the two driven wheels. For $4,000 extra, there is the Range Extender option. It adds a 650 cc gasoline-powered two-cylinder in the back on the passenger side. When the battery

It’s got all the BMW signature styling cues such as the twin-kidney grille and LED light surrounds, but the 2014 i3 looks decidedly different and it is the first of a new look of the brand’s sustainable mobility vehicles. NetCarShow.com

gets low, the 38 hp (41 lb/ft) engine cuts in and acts as a generator supplying power to the battery. The engine never drives the wheels. Recharging time using a 220-volt (32 amps) takes about three hours. The available fast charger provides an 80 per cent charge in 20 minutes and 100 per cent in 30 minutes. BMW offers three different charging station options, which are installed by Bosch. The Life Module is made from carbon -fibre reinforced plastic

(CFRP), the first such passenger cell in the auto industry and also 50 per cent lighter than steel but just as strong. It attaches to the Drive Module. Because there are no intrusions in the Life

Module, it has the passenger volume of a 3 Series BMW, but the footprint of a 1 Series. Much of the interior is made from renewable and/or recycled products. Even the key housing

is made from castor oil pressed from castor seeds. It goes from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds (7.9 seconds with Range Extender) with a top speed limited to 150 km/h to conserve battery

power. The all-important 80-120 km passing time is 4.9 seconds Real world range is 130-160 miles in the normal “Comfort” mode. By switching to ECO PRO mode or ECO PRO+ mode distance extends another 20 per cent. Mixing horsepower and engine power is almost impossible, but the best estimate of the i3 would be 1.4/1.7/1.5L/100 km city/highway/combined. One of the best ways to make the most out of the battery is by

brake power regeneration. When the driver lifts his/her foot of the accelerator, the motor becomes a generator feeding the battery. At the same time the deceleration of the motor as it harvests energy is not unlike mechanical braking. If the driver is judicious, something like 75 per cent of stopping can be done without using the brake pedal. Just so the guy behind you knows you are slowing, the brake lights come on. i3 has power of V6 off the line X From B9

With a very distinctive shape, onlookers will know the i3 is something special, but it does not scream, “I’m saving the planet, I’m saving the planet!” like you see with other designs. With a remarkably

tight turning circle of 32.3 feet and BMWsignature near-perfect 50:50 weight ratio, the i3 gives spirited performance. I’d say the power off the line is as good as some V6s I could name. The rather skinny tires

used to decrease rolling resistance gave better grip than they look. Lift off the accelerator and the i3 brakes very solidly. Until you get used to it, power is very much on/off. There is, however, a sweet spot in the pedal

travel where you can coast using just kinetic power. Because torque is almost immediately available, blending into the flow of traffic on a 400-series highway is done with ease. And because the only

noise is the tires, there is none of the roar of an engine. I’m so used to having the note of the engine indicating merging power, that the lack of it made me check the speedo several times. X See INTERIOR B15

Interior underscores BMW’s commitment to recycling X From B10

The interior is a wonderful blending of leading edge and reclaimed. For instance, the trim panels have a slightly hoary look and feel that makes no bones about what it is and where it comes from which most

owners will be proud to show off. These materials are high quality for sure, but it underscores the lengths BMW went in order to make a truly recyclable car. But don’t let that fool you. This has got to be one of the most connected cars yet. Using a

smart phone there are a host of apps — some of which amaze. Check the temperature the night before and you can program the i3 to have the interior up to any desired temperature in the morning. Public charging stations are becoming

more prevalent but how do you find one? Simple, download the app and the i3 not only searches them out, but signals which ones are in use. Find an open station and the GPS guides the i3 right to it. Another thing that impressed was the

ingress and egress thanks to the French doors. With no transmission tunnel, you can park and just slide across and open the passenger door to get out. There are two iPadlike LCD screens, one in front of the driver with prime informa-

tion such as speed and another on the centre of the instrument panel depicting just about anything and everything thanks to all those apps. But for me, the fact the sun didn’t blot them out, even though they are placed high, is a good thing.

Known as the maker of the Ultimate Driving Machine, prestige and performance have been replaced by prestige and sustainability. The first mass-produced car of this new era is the i3 and it opens up a whole new road in the history of BMW.

The rise of ISIS jihadis in Iraq

T

HE IRAQI army will have to destroy Mosul in order to save it — and it’s not clear whether it can do the job even then. It isn’t so much an army as a vast system of patronage providing employment of a sort for 900,000 people. When fewer than a thousand ISIS jihadis fought their way into Mosul, Iraq’s second city, over the past few days, most of the government’s soldiers shed their uniforms and fled. The government troops never felt comfortable in Mosul anyway, for they are mostly Shia Muslims and the vast majority of Mosul’s 1.8-million residents are Sunni. (Or maybe it’s only 1.3-million people now, for up to 500,000 of the city’s residents are reported to be fleeing the triumphant jihadis: Shias, non-Muslim minorities and even Kurdish Sunnis have faced execution in other areas that have fallen under the control of ISIS.) The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (an Arabic word that can mean the entire Levant, including Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine) began as Al-Qaeda in Iraq during the American occupation, but it’s the Syrian

GWYNNE DYER World WATCH civil war that turned it into a regional threat. ISIS actually spent more time fighting other rebel forces in Syria than the Assad regime, but it gained recruits from all the Sunni Arab countries just by being on the right side. It also got access to the money and arms that were flowing into Syria for the anti-government forces. In the past two years, it has established effective control over most of sparsely populated eastern Syria and it started moving back into western Iraq late last year. In January, it seized the city of Fallujah in Anbar province, only 100 kilometres west of Baghdad, and the Iraqi army was unable to retake the city. About 1,000 soldiers were killed, but at least they stood and fought in Anbar. In Mosul, they ran. Soldiers ran even though they outnumbered the ISIS fighters

who attacked the city by at least 15:1 and it may not be willing to fight very hard to take it back. The entire Iraqi government is an “institutionalized kleptocracy, as one of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s own ministers said — and the army is no exception. Soldiers who go unpaid because their officers stole their wages are rarely willing to die for them. The only real fighting force left in Iraq is the Peshmerga, the army of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). It is a tough, wellarmed force, but it serves what is a separate state in all but name. It apparently still holds the part of Mosul east of the Tigris River, which has a large Kurdish population, but it may not be willing to take the large number of casualties that would be involved in street fighting to recover the main part of the city. At a minimum, the KRG would want the Baghdad government to make major concessions on the revenue and oil-exporting disputes that have poisoned its relations with the federal government before it commits its forces to a major offensive against ISIS. Or it may just decide to stand on the defensive in the Kurdishmajority territory it now

holds and use the crisis to move even closer to its ultimate goal of an independent Kurdistan. ISIS has sent the occasional suicide bomber into Kurdistan, but it realizes its main fight is not with the Kurds. Having taken most of Mosul, its forces are advancing not east into Kurdistan, but south through Tikrit (which also fell) toward Baghdad. It will not try to take Baghdad itself, most of whose seven-million people are Shia, but, by the end of this month, it could end up in control of most of western and northern Iraq. At this point, the old Iraq-Syria border would disappear and the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham would become a reality, extending 400 kilometres from Mosul and Fallujah in Iraq to Deir-es-Zor, Raqqa and near Aleppo in Syria. It would be mostly desert and it would control only about five-million people and almost no oil, but it would be ruled by an Islamist organization so extreme that it has even been disowned by al-Qaeda. The remaining bits of the new regional map would be the western half of Syria, still largely under the control of the Assad regime; the semi-independent state of Kurdistan; and the

densely populated, Shiamajority core of Iraq between Baghdad and Basra, hard up against the border with Shia Iran. None of this is yet inevitable, of course. It’s a war — and wars can take unexpected turns. But, it’s certainly a possibility. It’s also a possibility the war could get wider, as Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey all consider whether they need to intervene militarily to protect their own interests. But, that’s unlikely to happen this month. Later is anybody’s guess.

CAREERS

Execute email etiquette efficiently By Stephanie Clark SPECIAL TO KTW bcjobs.ca

There is perhaps none among us who hasn’t hit the “send” button just as our eye caught the name of an unintended recipient — an email with serious implications for our career or with a typo that has us blushing. (I do recall a few of these from my own emails when still in the corporate world. Oy! Embarrassing.) Career management includes a lesson in email etiquette. Along with sticking to professional writing standards when dashing off business-related emails, you will serve your career well if you communicate only professional messages. Here are a few tips for writing business emails: • Refrain from overusing the “sent with high importance” feature. • Overdoing punctua-

tion marks ????!!!!! does not convey professionalism. • Don’t use ALL CAPS. It suggests that you are yelling. • Avoid those snappy abbreviations so useful in texting. No IMHO or LOL. • Likewise, avoid cutesy smiley faces or other emoticons. • Proofread to check for spelling, grammar and to ensure you’re making sense. • Respect individual privacy by using the BCC (blind copy) feature when sending to a large group. There are certainly topics that should not be discussed over email; in fact, many workplaces have policies that address the following: • Angry words, committed for all time in digital format, can come back to bite you. • Opinions on disciplinary matters or disparaging of corporate

strategies, again, are best not committed to text. • Sexual matters — even seemingly harmless cartoons — are never appropriate in workplace emails. • Jokes, cute PowerPoint messages, religious inspirational messages — again, are best left to send to friends and family from your personal email. And, of course, there are ways to use email very effectively at work to maximize your time management and enhance your corporate citizenship: • Make sure your subject line clearly states the purpose of your communication. • Use a salutation. “Hello John” is expected in professional communication. • Take some time to chunk your information. Organizing dense text into headings and

bullets will greatly enhance its readability, improving the chances that your recipient will read your message. Finally, a few tips on managing that evergrowing email inbox: • Immediately delete emails that don’t concern you — invitations to meetings that don’t pertain to you, corporate communications that are not of interest, jokes and inspirational messages that shouldn’t have been sent in the first place. • Set up folders for newsletters and other periodicals that you don’t have time to read and move them out of your inbox into the appropriate folder upon receipt (some systems now automate this feature). • Choose emails that will take only a moment or two to reply to, then reply, and delete or file. This will save time later in try-

ing to find an email, or embarrassment because you forgot to respond.

The remaining emails are the actionable items that need to

get moved onto your daily planner or project management file.
