D
id you know that Kamloops is home to the very first food policy council in Canada? The Kamloops Food Policy Council (KFPC) provides guidance and implements actions to improve food security in the Kamloops area. Established in 1995, the KFPC has emphasized public education on food security issues as well as concrete food system projects. The KFPC acts as an umbrella, providing an opportunity for project and advocacy groups to co-ordinate their work. The council has fostered food action projects with community members over the last 20 years using the community development approach and provided input to City of Kamloops policy development related to food security and urban agriculture. The KFPC has been involved in programs such as Gardengate, Interior Community Kitchens, Kamloops Foodshare and Kamloops Farmers Markets. Read more about a couple of the current programs the KFPC is involved in: The Kamloops Public Produce Program is part of Community Food Action Program of the KFPC. Public produce gardens act as an educational tool within the community, demonstrating sustainable, organic techniques that promote a healthy environment, as well as diversify urban food supply sources and build resilience to food crisis. In addition to the strong volunteer base the program maintains, master gardeners offer advice and expertise for the program and help maintain the gardens. The first public garden was planted in downtown Kamloops on Victoria Street and in 2012 the City of Kamloops initiated a nongated, organic, edible demonstration garden in McDonald Park and an edible garden in front of City Hall. The Gleaning Abundance Project (GAP) ensures that healthy food does not go to waste. It is a food security initiative that seeks to preserve and protect local food systems by helping home owners care for and make use of their food crops. Home owners with too much fruit in their trees or vegetables in their garden can contact GAP to share their abundance. Tree scouts and harvest leaders will harvest the food and share with homeowners, volunteers and outreach programs. VBP is a national on-farm food safety program for beef producers in Canada. A farm registered with VBP has demonstrated through an audit that their food safety practices conform to program requirements. This program is based on the world recognized food safety standard known as HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control point) and is designed to help producers prevent, monitor and reduce food safety risks on their beef cattle farms.

Environmental farm planning is a voluntary process that producers can use to identify both environmental strengths and any potential risks on their farms. If needed, an action plan is developed to reduce risks. This national program is administered in B.C. through the B.C. Agriculture Council. TOGETHER Interior Community Services is proud to be offering a canning project designed to link seniors and young families through the process of learning how to can. A variety of options will be available to can including vegetables, fruit and jam. Canning Kitchens will be offered from the end of June to the end of October from 9:30 to 1:00 at least once a week on selected dates. All kitchens are free of charge and include all supplies. All Canning Kitchens will be held at Mt. Paul United Church, 140 Laburnum Street. Registration is limited to 8 participants per kitchen. The berries are located at 5973 VLA Road, Chase. Corn season begins in August at our vegetable stand located at Shuswap (VLA Road) east of Chase on the Trans Canada Hwy. The corn stand hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. August seven days a week, September and October hours will be posted. We offer several different corn varieties along with potatoes, squash and pumpkins. We are at the Kamloops Farmers Market Saturdays from mid August to the end of September. Pumpkin season begins at the farm in October with organized wagon rides where you go to feed the sheep and then get to the pumpkin patch to choose that special pumpkin or just take a little wagon and walk out to the patch with your family. Lamb is available custom cut, wrapped and frozen as ordered.

he Sun Peaks & Region Farmers’ Market returns to Sun Peaks’ main village thoroughfare on Sunday, June 29, from 9:30am to 1:30pm. Every Sunday until to September 7, farmers, artisans and musicians from the local region will congregate in the village to greet Sun Peaks’ residents and guests with the finest seasonal fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, homemade wares and local music. With over a 60 per cent increase in the average number of vendors last summer, Sun Peaks’ weekly market has become known as one of the best locations in the Thompson region for both vendors and those searching for the best the Sun Peaks region has to offer. Fresh produce will be a highlight this summer, providing organic and seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs grown in the nearby Kamloops valley. It’s the perfect opportunity for resident families to bring fresh and healthy produce to the dinner table, while choosing to buy local. Music will take centre stage this summer, providing the perfect soundtrack for a day exploring Sun Peaks’ alpine village and discovering new exciting flavours and items from the many vendors. Local favourite performers Team Hewitt, Shane Phillips and Margit Bull are a few of the musicians who entertain this summer. The June 29 and July 27 markets will feature a Master Gardener booth hosted by the Thompson Shuswap Master
Gardeners Chapter. These knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to answer gardening-related questions from and help promote environmentally responsible gardening practices for a healthy and balanced garden. Strolling through the market at Sun Peaks is the perfect complement to a weekend getaway at the resort, especially after an action-packed Saturday. Or simply take a short drive on a Sunday morning to see what’s waiting for you there.

FARMS2CHEFS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER From the farm to your plate. Join local chefs and farmers for the annual Farm2Chefs fundraiser on July 27, “a grazing experience to celebrate and support local chefs, food, wine and ale.” The Farms2Chefs annual fundraiser at SSOL Gardens (formally Sun River Organics) shows off the best of what local farmers and producers have to offer. 15 restaurants and over 10 local wineries and breweries will get together with local farmers to create truly local appetizers. Chefs create tasty one-bite dishes, complemented by the finest beverages from local wineries and breweries. The event will also feature live entertainment from the Cathi Marshall Band. The money raised goes towards the Farm2Chefs Grant, available to farmers and local food security groups. Last year the funds helped support a public produce venture and a community kitchen. Farm2Chefs is a non-profit society with a mission to connect local farms with local restaurants, helping move locally grown food from seed to plate. It’s a member-

driven organization comprised mainly of farmers and chefs in the area. Farm2Chefs was formed in 2010 with a simple mandate of strengthening the link between local food producers and chefs and supporting the local food economy. Today the organization has a strong network of local producers and restaurants. One of the organizations founding chefs, David Tombs of Terra Restaurant said the program allows chefs to work with great local product and for farmers to sell goods directly to restaurants rather than other distribution channels. “The area that we live in is so rich and there is so much available,” he said. Since its inception Farm2Chefs has undertaken a number of initiatives. Grow-op (growing opportunities) was intended to link farmers and chefs early in the growing season to allow chefs to communicate to farmers what foods they would be willing to purchase. The collaborative also operates a grants and loans program which provides funds for farmers and chefs for various initiatives.
