$100,000 club in city remains at 62 By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER

andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

After nearly doubling in 2012, the number of city of Kamloops employees making more than $100,000 has plateaued. According to the city’s annual report on employees who make $75,000 or more, 62 city staffers took home more than $100,000 in pay in 2013, on par with the year before. Kamloops Fire Rescue accounted for just under half of the city’s six-figure employees, with city directors and managers posting most of the other top salaries. While the number of staff in the six-figure club stayed relatively the same, their combined salaries increased the city pay-

roll by another $1.3 million. In 2012, staff with over $100,000 in remuneration cost the city $19.6 million of the total payroll. This year, it was $20.9. City director salaries also stayed stable after big gains in 2012. Of the city’s top managers, CAO David Trawin had the largest bump in salary, from $199,282 in 2012 to $240,608 in 2013. That increase is mainly due to the lower salary Trawin was paid for the first portion of 2012, when he served as the city’s director of development and engineering services. Trawin told KTW he was also paid less than the city’s set rate for CAO during his six-month probationary term,

which expired near the end of 2013. Overall, the city’s payroll grew to $53.9 million in 2012, from $52.7 — again, a relatively smaller gain than what the city saw the year previous. In 2012, the payroll grew by almost $3 million, after totalling $49.8 million in 2011. Kamloops’ elected officials by contrast posted a modest increase for the year. Their collective pay rose from $293,119 from $291,348. Councillors get a cost of living raise each year determined by the consumer price index. Mayor Peter Milobar was paid $88,330, while most councillors earned $25,711. City managers, CUPE staff and councillors are all due for raises in the coming years.

Managers and unionized staffers will get 7.5 per cent over five years, starting with a one per cent raise in 2014. Council’s pay will rise once a new mayor and councillors are sworn in following the Nov. 15 election. The mayor’s salary will be set using an average of mayoral salaries in 14 B.C. communities of similar size, with the highest and lowest salaries removed. Kamloops’ mayor will be paid 90 per cent of the average salary. Councillors will make 35 per cent of the mayor’s salary to start, rising to 40 per cent by the end of term. Last year, a citizen committee estimated the raise would up councillors’ pay to about $30,000 at the start of the term and $34,000 by its end.

Post-traumatic trek for healing, awareness By Cam Fortems STAFF REPORTER

cam@kamloopsthisweek.com

It’s been 21 years since infantryman and paratrooper Steve Hartwig last saw his partner on duty in the former Yugoslavia — the day Scott McFarlane received third-degree burns in an accident while serving on military duty. The event, during which Hartwig helped smother the flames on McFarlane, was one of a number of traumatic episodes — including being wounded — that eventually led to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress in the veteran who served in the Royal Westminster regiment. Now, McFarlane is scheduled to march with Hartwig on a cross-Canada journey to raise awareness about disorder that’s recently been in the news due to a spate of suicides by veterans in this country.

Hartwig said the past two months have been a blur since he decided to stage a long-delayed trek for his own healing and awareness of posttraumatic stress. The two first got in touch last year, when McFarlane posted on Hartwig’s Facebook page. They are expected to march — some of the time running — into Kamloops on Canada Day as they trudge toward the goal of St. John’s, N.L.

Steve Hartwig and Scott McFarlane are trekking across the country to bring awareness to PTSD and the military. Hartwig is stopping in Kamloops on Canada Day.

Hartwig suffered emotional trauma after returning home from duty, anguish that wasn’t recognized by authorities when posttraumatic stress was not broadly accepted by the military. His marriage fell apart and he has battled with suicidal thoughts.

Since then, the trauma has been recognized, in particular after Romeo Dallaire, the former Canadian commander in Rwanda, wrote and spoke about his own mental-health problems. But, Hartwig said its impacts are still not being fully treated by

the Canadian military, though it has made strides. Two years ago, Canada’s military ombudsman found not enough psychiatrists and mental health professionals were being made available by National Defence.

By December this year a rash of suicides were being reported by veterans of the conflict in Afghanistan. The paratrooper said he’d been pondering a trek for two years but the 44-year-old wasn’t ready to put the rest of his life on hold, including being a father. But about seven weeks ago, he decided to put aside his job as a martial arts instructor and make the trek. Since then, veterans nationwide have helped him with logistics of the journey, including providing RV support. While in Kamloops, he will stay with a veteran. He is scheduled to be at the Rocky Mountain Rangers armoury at 3 p.m. today (July 1). Most days, clad in gear that includes boots and a military rucksack, he will compete two standard 16-kilometre marches — some of

it running — on the 10-week journey to Newfoundland. The inspiration during the tough slog will be others veterans, including those he meets on the journey. “I had a lot of trauma. But it built character,” Hartwig said of his own personal journey. “The goal became to heal myself.” When he speaks to veterans suffering after returning from service Hartwig said he often hears “anger and hatred at Canadian Forces, government and veterans affairs. “The people who made these decisions are long gone . . . . At the time, they didn’t do a good job. Now there’s way better treatment. But what’s being done for veterans needs to improve.” Hartwig operates a website at intonomansland.com, which documents his journey.

Facebook fiend terrorized ex’s STAFF REPORTER

tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

A Kamloops man who admitted to inventing two non-existent women — one on Facebook and the other through a burner cellphone — to terrorize his ex-girlfriends in a catfishing scheme has narrowly avoided a lengthy jail sentence. Catfishing is the practice of pretending to be someone they’re not, using social media to create false identities, Instead of jail time, 38-year-old George Douglas will spend the next three years living under strict courtordered terms at his mother’s house. Kamloops provincial court Judge Chris Cleaveley called Douglas’ behaviour “devious and underhanded.” “This is one of the most troubling set of circumstances I can ever recall,” he said, noting a jail sentence would not have been inappropriate. Court heard Douglas’ reign of terror began with a breakup in March 2011, after which he created a fake Facebook account under the name Chrissy Last and began sending threatening

messages to his ex. At the same time, Douglas also damaged the ex’s vehicle — slashing tires and smashing windows. He took the same tactics after another breakup in October 2012, first calling his ex-girlfriend nonstop, then resorting to Facebook messages from his fake account. The messages were sent to the woman’s new love interest, a man living in northern B.C. Around the same time, the ex-girlfriend began receiving threatening text messages from a number she did not recognize The texts were being sent by Douglas on a pay-as-you-go cellphone he had registered in the false name of Stacy

Watson. They mentioned specific damage Douglas caused to the woman’s vehicle — including keying the word “slut” into the driver-side door and slashing a tire. The messages also told the ex to “stay away from Clayton,” the name of her new boyfriend, saying, “he’s Stacy’s.” Posing as Chrissy Last and Stacy Watson, Douglas also began harassing the woman’s friends and slashed the tires of vehicles belonging to her ex-husband and mother. The woman eventually moved to Logan Lake. Court heard her car was a write-off due to Douglas’ vandalism. The third woman to

be harassed by Douglas’ made-up gang of female bullies broke up with him in November 2013. The couple had moved together from Kamloops to Falkland. Douglas began sending Chrissy Last messages to the woman before they had even separated. When they broke up, the messages turned violent and threatening. Douglas later vandalized her vehicle and a car belonging to her stepfather. Cleaveley placed Douglas on a year-long conditional-sentence order to be followed by a two-year probation term. For the entire threeyear period, he will be banned from using any form of social media.

Cleaveley also ordered Douglas to delete the Chrissy Last Facebook account and to stay away from all of the people he targeted. He also has to pay more than $4,500 in restitution. Douglas was sentenced to an additional 14-day jail term for driving while prohibited. That sentence will be served on weekends.

to demand from those commuting to Northern Alberta for work. He said the message from Air Canada is it wants to see more passengers going to Calgary on its two flights a day before it steps up service to Alberta. “If they sell out we could do three flights a day. We’re looking at strengthening the Calgary mar-

ket before we do more.” The airport is now undertaking a marketing plan to help drive that traffic focusing on winter vacations. Legace also met with representatives from Canadian North to look at interest in winter vacation charters to Sun Peaks, something he described as a longer-term goal.

City hosts heritage fair By Dale Bass

Tyler Suits of Port Alberni is among 65 kids taking part in the B.C. Provincial Heritage Fair in Kamloops this year.

STAFF REPORTER

dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

When Donald McLean stopped near Cache Creek and built his log cabin, he likely thought he was just creating a place to live. The retired Hudson’s Bay Company trader likely just saw it as a good place to add a roadhouse and take advantage of all those men heading north, right past his doors, looking for their fortunes. He didn’t know the trail they were following would find its way into B.C. history as the Cariboo Gold Rush. He couldn’t have foreseen that students like Tyler Suits of Port Alberni would some day go there to learn about life along the Cariboo Wagon Road or how to pan for gold. Tyler, who is going into Grade 10 in September, had never been to Historic Hat Creek Ranch until Monday, June 30, when 65 students made the trip to learn about the realities of life in

McLean’s time, all part of the itinerary of the annual B.C. Provincial Heritage Fair, which is being hosted this year by Kamloops. Tyler’s project is on the Battle of Dieppe on Aug. 19, 1942. His grandfather inspired the topic, Tyler said, even though the Second World War veteran fought elsewhere and wasn’t part of the 6,000 mainly Canadian infantrymen who landed on the northern coast of France with the goal to seize a port there. Ten hours later, 3,623 soldiers were dead and a retreat was called. Tyler chose it, he said, because it is

seen as a key part of Canada’s heritage. After the ranch visit, the students — representing grades four to 10 — headed to Highland Valley to tour the copper mine, with a stop in Logan Lake planned for later in the day. Today (July 1), they’re all headed to Riverside Park, where their heritage-fair works will be showcased as part of Canada Day celebrations. Michael Gurney, president of the B.C. Heritage Fairs Society, said the Canada Day public presentation is a highlight for the students, a time to share their interests with others.

On Wednesday, July 2, the group heads to the Kamloops Museum and Archives and to the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park. Gurney said the projects are “extraordinary” and cover a range of historical moments, from the Halifax Explosion to the role of pulp mills in B.C. to the 127-year-old RCMP Musical Ride. Common interests have led to new friends, he said. When the fair began on Sunday, June 29, Gurney watched two students bond immediately over their common interest of the Second World War. “It’s a great group of kids and we’ve got six alumni, kids who have been in the fair before, who are here with them to provide some leadership,” Gurney said. The fair ends on Thursday, July 3.

As Canadian as . . . all this and much, much more

I

N 1972, AS CANADA celebrated its 105th birthday, CBC Radio’s Peter Gzowski held a contest while hosting This Country in the Morning. Gzowski, whose voice is part of the Holy Trinity of Canadian Cadence (the others being Gordon Lightfoot and Danny Gallivan), wanted listeners to create a simile for Canada in the vein of “As American as apple pie.” Gzowski’s contest challenged listeners to complete the saying: “As Canadian as . . . “ The winner was a 17-year-old student named Heather Scott, who offered up perfection: “As Canadian as . . . possible under the circumstances.” Years later, Scott would edit Don Cherry’s autobiography, deepening her connection to Canadian lore, considering the bombastic star of Coach’s Corner finished seventh — ahead of the country’s first prime minister, John A. MacDonald, and right behind prime minister Lester Pearson — in the CBC’s 2004 Greatest Canadian program. Scott succumbed to cancer on Oct. 30,1994, thereby cementing her place in all things Canadiana as she left this world less than a month before the Grey Cup featured the first U.S. team, Baltimore, which would lose to the Maple Leaf-waving B.C. Lions. So, in honour of Heather Scott and Peter Gzowski and a Canada that I love, but fear is slipping away bit by bit each and every day, I offer a celebration of what makes this country spectacular:

CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom MUSINGS • We apologize profusely and often — even when we are alone. It’s true. The other day, I heard my son burp while on the computer in his room, all alone. He followed that burp with a quick, “Excuse me.” As Cherry would say, my boy’s a good Canadian kid! • We continue to define ourselves by how we are not like Americans, except when it comes to the metric system, when we adopt all but heights and weights — and yards on the three-down football field. • When we debate icing, the argument is over no-touch and race-to-thepuck, not about chocolate or vanilla. • We can find vinegar right on restaurant tables when devouring French fries. Drive due south and note how difficult it is to find the same the deeper you get into the United States. • We can still watch those educational and uniquely Canadian Heritage Minutes, thanks to the Internet. Those who watched Canadian TV in the 1990s will know what I mean. Those who don’t should go online

right now to http://tinyurl.com/ ntwtomj. • We might grumble, but we still line up at the government liquor stores and pay exorbitant prices for booze. The other day, I paid $25 for a case of 12 Heineken; in February, I was in Seattle and paid $15 for a case of 24 Heineken. I like that we justify the high prices to out-of-country visitors by noting the taxes fund health care and other government services. • On that note, our case of beer consists of 12, whereas a case of beer in America is 24. That discrepancy alone could fully explain the difference between being a Canadian and being an American. • We get a language lesson every time we buy a product. In my hand is a can of garlic tomato paste (or pâte á base de tomatoes ál’ail) and a jar of Skippy Smooth peanut butter, which is “peanutty goodness!” (or Skippy Cremeux, which is “L’arachide á son meilleur!”). • We not only have six times zones, but Canada is so vast that we can have summer, fall, winter and spring on the same day across the country — and often in Kamloops. • We still call it pop, not soda. It’s still “zed” in my books. It remains Kraft Dinner only in Canada. Our “eh” is more legendary that the Fonz’s “Ayyy!” We still call them chocolate bars, not candy bars. Double-double is a drive-thru staple. Happy 147th, old man. You remain as Canadian as possible under the circumstances. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

Saluting this inventive country With the big celebration upon us today (Tuesday, July 1), we reach into past KTW pages to once again salute this fantastic country, which is 147 years young. There is so much to celebrate about this crazy country of three ocean coastlines and six time zones. Give a toast to this country of comics, of spendthrift senators, of wild weather, of vinegar on French fries, of hockey, of high taxes, of CanCon, of pogey, icky-bicky, loonies and toonies, of adoring the CBC, of hating the CBC, of voting, but against rather than for a party, of choosing not to vote, but bitching about the results anyway, dammit! Salute this remarkable land that has blessed us with all this and more. Don’t for a moment think we cannot be brilliant. Consider just a smidgen of what Canada has offered up to the rest of the globe: CPR dummy, anti-gravity suit, automatic lubricators, Balderdash, basketball, electric cooking range, electric wheelchair, Fuller brush, ice hockey, kayak, kerosene, lacrosse, computerized braille, electric car heater, electric light bulb, JAVA, instant mashed potatoes, prosthetic hand, film colourization, Pablum, jetliner, Jolly Jumper, zipper, snowblower, snowmobile, garbage bag, Avro Arrow, heart pacemaker, electric organ, IMAX movie system, goalie mask, electric microscope, electric streetcar, gramophone, lawn sprinkler, insulin process, Marquis wheat, Robertson screwdriver, newsprint, odometer, football goalpost with single base, Trivial Pursuit, paint roller, Plexiglass, Mcintosh apple, standard time, telephone, music synthesizer, television camera, safety paint, television, portable film developing system, telephone handset, railway sleeper car, undersea telegraph cable, mobile blood transfusion service, light bulb, walkie-talkie, wireless radio, Pictionary, birchbark canoe, retractable beer-case handle, snow shoes, steam foghorn, table hockey, Superman, toboggan, synchronized swimming, Velcro, five-pin bowling, Abdominizer, Yahtzee, AC radio tube, acetylene — and, of course, threedown football, the way God meant it to be played.

Father should not be in care of anyone

Speak up You can comment on any story you read @ kamloopsthisweek.com

Editor: Re: The June 26 story on a court case involving a father and his actions toward his children (‘Father avoids jail; must not contact kids’): I am absolutely astonished that Warren Batke, — whose four younger children have been placed in foster care after he banished his 11-year-old from the house, threatened to shoot him and also threatened one of his daughters (not to mention sundry other offences) — has avoided jail time due to the fact he needs to be home to care for his older, disabled son. By what logic is such a father considered capable of caring for someone with the mental capacity of a six-month-old? Where is the care for this disabled young man? How can he protect himself? Alarm bells should be going off for all concerned with people with mental disability. In a better world, this father should have lost the privilege of keeping any living person or thing in his care. “Administrators are plentiful and well-paid and surely capable of taking on the duties necessary for summer school.” — posted by Taxpayer

Re: Story: Pedophile in Kamloops awaits sentencing:

Re: Letter: MP McLeod should take stand on Northern Gateway:

“Kamloops does not have a representative in Parliament. “Harper has a puppet spokesperson in Kamloops.” — posted by Peter S. “If you think any politician is going to voluntarily take sides on any issue without a clear majority one way or another, you are deluded, particularly when he/she doesn’t have to. “Northern Gateway is not in her constituency and her government has already taken its stand.” — posted by Albert Speer

Redskin moniker is about current context Editor: Re: Adam Williams’ column of June 26 regarding the controversy surrounding the Washington Redskins nickname (‘Redskins name needs to go’): Newfoundland was the first North American location with sustained European settlement and contact with native Americans. The Beothuks (now extinct) were accustomed to painting

themselves with red ochre, partly for decoration and partly as protection against insect bites. The Beothuks were considered a nuisance and were exterminated, so it’s not hard to see why the term “redskin” became a pejorative term, later applied to all native Americans. Ironically, in Beothuk culture, one of their most severe social punishments was to forbid the offender to use red ochre

to paint themselves. If you weren’t a “redskin,” you were a social outcast. So, for Beothuks, being a “redskin” meant you were valued and accepted as part of the tribe. But, obviously, it’s all about context and, in our current age of social correctness, “redskin” is no longer acceptable. Chris Kempling Kamloops

Q&A

Slow down out there

Editor: As summer approaches, many of us head out to local lakes for recreation. Common sense seems to disappear when we travel. As our speed increases, rules of the road are disregarded. Many families, ours included, head to Paul Lake and I have been horrified to see the speeds at which people drive that road. Please, everyone, slow down and take care when you travel, regardless of what road you are on. Innocent people are going to pay for your carelessness and disregard for safety. M. Schwarz Kamloops

Baffled by some decisions made at Kamloops City Hall Editor: I am wondering where the priorities are with our mayor and council. We need our infrastructure maintained. By that, I mean some of our roads should be repaved on a yearly basis, not repatched by people who do a terrible job. Examples can be found on Tranquille and Westsyde roads and at the entrances to the Halston and Overlanders bridges. I understand it will cost $9 million to repair Overlanders Bridge and the city is borrowing the money. The city should borrow $15 million as there will likely be big overruns, as happened with the bike path connecting Valleyview and the downtown, the path no

one uses during the winter months and only a few use each day during the summer. People should have been fired over that project. Overlanders Bridge should be repaired and maintained yearly. And how about the art at the roundabout at Third Avenue and Lorne Street? It cost $135,000. For that much money, I could have built something really nice. And we have $250,000 spent on a feasibility study for an art centre, while there has been some talk about a new city hall. If a new city hall it is needed, the City of Kamloops should move into the former Kamloops Daily News building, sell its current building and amalgamate all other

smaller offices into one building. That would save taxpayers money and make it more efficient. Enough of this empire building. And $45,000 for a place to pay our taxes? Most people pay taxes online or at banks — and they could still get to city hall despite the construction. Oh, and about the First Avenue/ Victoria Street alignment project — boy, has that been slow. It should have already been done. Give me a break. No, I’m not bitter. I’m just baffled. Larry Wagner Kamloops

Patrolling riverfront summer tradition By Tim Petruk

STAFF REPORTER

tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

It’s July — and that means lifeguards are back patrolling the beach at Riverside Park. The City of Kamloops has 50 lifeguards who split their time between the city’s indoor and outdoor pools and, in the summer, Riverside Park’s beach on the South Thompson River. Last week, they were out training in preparation for the busy summer beach season, which begins unofficially with Canada Day festivities today (July 1) at Riverside Park, where the temperature is forecast to hit a scorching 35 C. Glen Cheetham, the City of Kamloops’ aquatic-programs supervisor, said

the Riverside Park beach — the only lifeguard-patrolled riverfront beach in B.C. — presents unique challenges to city lifeguards, many of whom are experienced only in patrolling the tile shores of the Canada Games Aquatic Centre or Westsyde Pool. “It’s dynamic and it changes throughout the season,” Cheetham told KTW. “They’re used to working in indoor environments. This is very different. It’s an uncontrolled aquatic environment.” Today, there’s a lot of water and a little beach at Riverside Park. But, that will soon change. “Of course, the sand bar changes,” Cheetham said. “Right now, we have a ton of water but, by the end of August, we’ll be lucky

if we have five metres’ width of water.” Cheetham said incidents like last week’s river rescue of girls on tubes — who were clinging to one of the buoys at the Riverside Park swimming area when firefighters arrived at the scene — underscore the need for lifeguards at the city beach. “It’s a good example of how a fun venture turned bad really quickly,” he said. “It didn’t take long to realize things got scary.” The city’s lifeguard patrols at Riverside Park cost taxpayers $25,000 annually. The service runs from late June, usually beginning a few days before Canada Day, until the end of August. Lifeguards are stationed at the park between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting.

THOMPSON CAN BE DANGEROUS On Thursday, June 26, Kamloops Fire Rescue crews responded to a 911 call for several teens in trouble on the South Thompson River. The girls were floating down the river on inflatable tubes and ended up clinging to the pilings at Riverside Park beach in strong currents. A KFR boat was dispatched and responded quickly, having been on the river earlier as part of exercise training. The girls were all brought ashore, visibly frightened, but virtually unscathed. Meanwhile, the BC Coroners Service is recommending new efforts be devoted to providing more effective water-safety education, especially for teenage males aged 15 to 18. The recommendation is one of three made by a child death review panel into child and youth drowning. The report is online at kamloopsthisweek.com.

Rehill realizes NHL Draft dream B.C.’s best to swing sticks at The Dunes STAFF REPORTER

YAN REHILL is following in the footsteps of Scott Niedermayer, the last Kamloops Blazer drafted by the New Jersey Devils. “Those are some big shoes to fill,” Rehill said with a laugh on Monday, June 30, two days after he was selected by the Devils at the NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia. New Jersey drafted the 6-foot-3, 213-pound defenceman from Edmonton in the fifth round, 131st overall. Niedermayer was picked third overall by the Devils in 1991. “I was sitting in front of the TV with my family and had it up on my phone, hitting refresh every couple of minutes waiting for my name to pop up,” Rehill said. “There was a lot of excitement around my house. My parents were really happy and so was I. My phone started blowing up right away. It was a pretty cool feeling.” Rehill, 18, was named the Blazers’ best defenceman for the 2013-2014 WHL season, posting a minus-4 rating playing for the Western Conference’s worst team against the opposition’s top for-

wards each game. He led the league in penalty minutes, spending 182 of them in the sin bin, and racked up 15 fighting majors, along with four goals and 20 points.

Picked by the Blue and Orange in the sixth round of the WHL Bantam Draft in 2010, Rehill has played in 118 games for Kamloops, posting four goals, 23 points

and a plus-five rating. The right-hand shot has compiled 286 penalty minutes with the Blazers. “It all feels great,” Rehill said. “It’s a big sigh of

relief that it finally happened. There’s a lot of stressful weeks leading up to the draft.” Rehill is employed at the gym where he trains in the off-season, so look for him to impress during the Blazers’ pre-season conditioning tests. “I’ve been hitting the gym pretty much every day,” the sizeable rearguard said. His durability will be of paramount importance when the Blazers get the 2014-2015 season underway in September, with Swiss import D-man Edson Harlacher having opted to leave the team and play in Europe. “That’s surprising,” said Rehill, hearing the news for the first time during a conversation with KTW on Monday. “I thought he’d come back.” Coincidentally, the last Blazer drafted, forward Cole Ully, was picked in the exact same spot as Rehill — 131st overall in the fifth round in 2013 — by the Dallas Stars. Rehill will attend the Devils’ prospects camp in mid-July and rookie camp in September. “I was just hoping to get picked somewhere,” Rehill said. “Now that it’s finally over, it feels so much better and I can get back to work.”

The Dunes at Kamloops might be playing host to the next great Canadian golfer as this week it hosts the 2014 B.C. Junior Girls’ Championship. The tournament will run from today (July 1) to Friday, July 4, and will bring 51 golfers to the Tournament Capital. “What I can tell you is it’s nice to see the level of ability for B.C. junior girls,” said Bill Bilton Jr., general manager of The Dunes. “There’s girls that very well could work their way on to the LPGA.” Play will get underway at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a cut coming after 54 holes. Rounds three and four will then be played on Thursday and Friday. The provincial championship is the latest tournament to be played at The Dunes, which has seen a number of regional events in recent years. It also hosted the B.C. Amateur, the Western Canadian Summer Games and was a host course for the Canadian Tour. “It’s great,” Bilton told KTW. “One of the thrills,

for me, of running the golf course — or as part of the team running the golf course — is hosting these events. It’s nice to see that The Dunes is chosen, first of all. “To have another provincial championship is great, another thing for The Dunes.” Bilton said the field includes a number of players from Vancouver and Naomi Ko, who has represented Canada, will also be in attendance. Though there are no golfers from Kamloops participating, Zone 2 (Kamloops to Osoyoos) will be well represented, with Rachelle Nielsen of Summerland Golf and Country Club, Mackenize Barrie of Vernon Golf and Country Club, Kylie Jack of Two Eagles Golf Course, Rhiannon Jones of Shannon Lake Golf Course and McKenna Lesiuk, Lauren Siemers and Emma Sabbah of Kelowna Golf and Country Club teeing off throughout the weekend. Golfers to represent B.C. at the 2014 Canadian Junior Girls Championship, being played at London’s Sunningdale Golf and Country Club from July 29 to Aug. 3, may be selected based, in part, on play at this tournament.

Blazers to pick twice at CHL Import Draft By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER

sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

Finding a diamond in the rough at the CHL Import Draft is part hard work and part luck for major-junior scouting staffs across the nation. Kamloops Blazers’ general manager Craig Bonner and his touting team believe they have their chunk of the equation under control heading into the 2014 import draft, which gets underway at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2. The Blazers are picking twice — sixth and 66th overall. “The first step is you get a whack of names from agents of players they represent,” Bonner said. “[Blazers’ head coach] Don Hay and I also headed to Philadelphia for the NHL Draft [held June 27 and June 28] and met with the Dallas Stars’ European scouts. “It helps. It’s an opinion. They’re looking at it a little differently, probably at guys a year older than the ones we look at, but they know the guys and they know who has pro deals and who doesn’t.” The majority owner of the Kamloops Blazers is Tom Gaglardi. He also owns the Stars. Establishing relationships with agents and talent identifiers with knowledge of young European talent helps general man-

unknowns,” Bonner said. “We can’t control who picks ahead of us and whether they come over [to Canada from Europe] is another thing. “You take your guy and hope for the best. We have a good list of guys.” In recent years, Kamloops has received production from import players such as forward Tim Bozon and defencemen Marek Hrbas and Edson Harlacher. The Blazers were informed this week that 18-year-old Harlacher, a topfour D-man throughout the 2013-2014 WHL campaign, will not be returning to Kamloops, opting instead to go back to Switzerland. “I thought if he didn’t get drafted, there would be a chance he’d stay in Europe and he’s going to try and play pro over there,” Bonner said. “After being in Philadelphia, with the list of players we have, we think we can get a player as good and hopefully better than Edson for our back end.” Go online to kamloopsthisweek.com on Wednesday for information on the Blazers’ draft picks.

BRASILIA — Paul Pogba scored with a late header to finally break Nigeria’s stubborn resistance and Joseph Yobo added an own-goal as France won 2-0 to reach the World Cup quarterfinals on Monday, June 30. Four years ago, France crashed out of the group stage, shamed a nation by going on strike and was jeered by its own fans and lambasted by politicians in the fallout from an embarrassing tournament. “I’m proud of my players because we’re coming back from very far. I think we’ve given a lot of pleasure back to our fans,’’ France coach Didier Deschamps said. “I think there were 5,000 here and millions back home who will feel proud.’’ Also on Monday, it took extra time for Germany to beat Algeria 2-1. The match was scoreless after regulation. Andre Schurrle scored in the 92nd minute and Mesut Ozil made it 2-0 in the 120th. Abdelmoumene Djabou tallied for Algeria in the 120th minute. The Round of 16 rolls on today (July 1) in Brazil with a pair of matches — Argentina and Switzerland square off at 9 a.m., with Belgium and the U.S. to follow at 1 p.m. “I’m very happy and proud to be among the last eight teams left,’’ Deschamps said. “We have four days left to prepare for another battle.’’ At the final whistle, France’s relieved players danced in front of their fans as dreams of a repeat run to the final — just like in 2006 — moved a step closer. “We had the whole country behind us. It’s one of the proudest moments of my life,’’ Pogba said. “We know we’re capable of playing our best match and playing the worst, but today we were good. We stuck together and I’m very happy.’’

TORONTO — Even the pinch-hit return of Jose Bautista could not help the Toronto Blue Jays. The all-star rightfielder appeared in his first game in a week, pinch hitting in the sixth inning but grounding in to a force out on Sunday, June 29, as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Blue Jays 4-0, Toronto’s third loss in a row. “Hopefully, Bautista’s back in here the next couple of games to give us kind of a jolt in the lineup,’’ said Blue Jays lefthander Mark Buehrle, who took the loss despite holding the White Sox to two runs in eight innings. The Blue Jays had Monday (June 30) off and will play the Milwaukee Brewers today (July 1), with game time set for 10 a.m. Right-hander Drew Hutchison (5-6, 4.00) of the Jays will face right-hander Marco Estrada (7-4, 5.06

ERA) of the Brewers. On Sunday, Chicago got seven strong innings from left-hander Jose Quintana (5-7) and a home run and a double from rightfielder Moises Sierra, who started the season with Toronto. Bautista, who did not play at all in the previous six games because of a mild left hamstring strain, hopes that he will be able to return full-time against Milwaukee on Tuesday. “Everybody knows I can’t go out on the field and not be 100 per cent,’’ Bautista said before the game, after testing the leg by running. “Hopefully by Tuesday I feel better and I can be in the outfield. If not, I can DH the whole game and play the day after.’’ The return of the right-fielder cannot

come soon enough. The Blue Jays finished with a 12-15 record in June after winning the first five games of the month. They lead the American League East despite losing nine of their past 13 games. The Blue Jays won only the opener of the four-game series against the White Sox (39-44), who are fourth in the American League Central. Besides Bautista’s potent right-handed bat, Toronto (45-39) is also without Brett Lawrie who is on the disabled list with a broken right index finger. “They’re a big part of it, no question about that,’’ said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. “Really, it’s been a couple of weeks we’ve been cold, regardless. We need to get going. Today was just kind of flat, one of those dead days. “Buehrle pitched good enough to win. He really did. He did what he always does. We got zero going and it’s frustrating.’’

What should you be looking for in a patio? Write what you know — isn’t that the old rule? KTW newsroom staffers have been known to enjoy the odd refreshing beverage from time to time, so who better to ask for patio recommendations?

With its quiet surroundings and striking views, Jessica Klymchuk recommends Hoodoos’ patio.

MARTY HASTINGS I like Storms’ patio. Serene location. View of the river. Gets sun. There are some decent patios in Kamloops, but many of them have views of the Tournament Capital’s main arteries. ADAM WILLIAMS I like a patio that has a decent view, plays music and is close to other locations. Carlos O’Bryan’s rooftop patio is great and what the Noble Pig lacks in view, it makes up for in ambience. Original Joe’s also has a fantastic view, but is relatively out of the way if

you don’t live in the area. JESSICA KLYMCHUK Besides the necessary requirements of cold drinks and good people, I like a patio that has a good view. A location with a nice view makes for a good atmosphere. Hoodoos at Sun Rivers is a great choice and,

since it’s in a low-traffic area, there are no loud traffic noises. But, good company can make even the dingiest backalley patio enjoyable. JESSICA WALLACE When it comes to patios, it’s the rule of real estate — location, location, location. In the sun or with a view, a

patio has to add something to the dining experience, otherwise you’re just leaving your food vulnerable to flies for no reason. Also, the booze — a reasonable patio should have slushy drinks and sangria on special. ANDREA KLASSEN Because I think of sun-

shine as nature’s annoying cousin with whom you have to put up in order to commune with trees, all my favourite patios are shady by design. Or the kind you’re only meant to visit after dark, when 100SPF sunscreen isn’t required to keep from going lobster red immediately (#redheadproblems). I’m a big fan of pergolas — think the Noble Pig patio or Red Beard’s new setup on the North Shore — which allow for both breezes and cover. Beyond that, the most important patio offerings are the same as what you’d worry about indoors: Beer selection and company. But, mostly beer selection. DALE BASS What do I like in a patio? An absence of smokers, wait staff that remembers we’re all out there, a nice view and good food.

Transit brings its European success West By Jim Robinson

METROLAND MEDIA

T

he Econoline is dead. Long live the Transit. Arguably one of the top-selling North American work van/ trucks ever; the Ford Econoline debuted in 1961, growing in size and versatility every year since. But in an age when regular gas is selling (in my neighbourhood at least) at $1.40/litre, its body on a massive frame and thirsty V8 and V10 engines were just too inefficient to be continued. Enter the 2015 Ford Transit which, while being new to us, has been in Europe for 47 years. The new Transit will be offered in three body lengths, two wheelbases, three roof heights, van, wagon, chassis cab and cutaway bodystyles, and in XL and XLT trim. With its two V6 gasoline engines and a diesel, Transit is up to 40 per cent more fuelefficient, weighs 700 lbs. less and carries 300 lbs. more than the outgoing E-Series. Much of this weight loss is due to the switch to unibody construc-

tion which results in no intrusion into the cargo area, unlike body-onframe. This makes it much easier for upfitters to build shelves and tool racks inside. The high roof version has a cargo height of 81.5 inches, enough for a person 6-foot-5 to walk in upright. The mid-roof ver-

KAMLOOPS

sion has 72 in. of cargo height while the low roof is 56 in., making it fit inside a normal garage. In its largest form, Transit offers 13,999 litres (487.3 cu. ft.) of cargo space ranging down to about 7,000 litres (250 cu. ft.). The high roof has about 80 per cent more

l a n i g i r ODEALER

cargo volume than the E-Series. For easier on- and off-loading, the rear doors pivot forward 270 degrees. Maximum payload is 4,650 lbs. with a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 lbs. Payload is an increase of 600 lbs. across all sizes over comparable E-Series vans.

As a passenger van, the largest version seats up to 15 people. The base engine has Ford’s familiar 3.7-litre normally aspirated V6 with 275 h.p. and 260 lb./ft. of torque that can also run on compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas when specially equipped. Next up is the 3.5-

litre turbocharged EcoBoost V6 with 310 h.p. and 400 lb./ft. of torque. The third engine is an inline, five-cylinder 3.2-litre turbo diesel with 185 h.p. but 350 lb./ft. of torque with 90 per cent of full torque available from as low as 1,500 rpm. Fuel numbers

for the 3.7-litre are 16.6/12.5/14.8L/100 km city/highway/ combined and 16.6/12.6/14.8L/100 km for the EcoBoost. A six-speed transmission with SelectShift manual mode is standard and drive is to the rear, no all-wheel-drive available. Durability was a major objective because vans are expected to live long with minimum time in the shop for repairs. The Transit was designed with a service life of 10 years and 240,000 km. Prototypes were tested over 7.4 million kms. — or far enough to circle the planet 185 times. As you can imagine, there are hundreds of thousands of ways to mix and match lengths, heights, engines, wheelbases and chassis styles and that doesn’t come anywhere near individual modifications. A very rough look at starting prices sees the 250 vans ranging from $33,799-$41,065 and 350 vans $37,795$44,495. Chassis cabs run from $33,049$36,349 and wagons, $39,595-$51,745 with cutaways from $32,449$35,749.

Blue Rodeo to headline free concert weekend at Sun Peaks By Jessica Wallace STAFF REPORTER

REG Keelor doesn’t like city life. It might shed light on the musician’s profile in the Canadian music scene, as one of the founding members of Blue Rodeo. But, it’s also the reason he has owned an acreage about an hour east of Toronto for 25 or so years. KTW spoke with Keelor as he was at his home — over 200 acres in the bottom of a valley. “I have a fantastic little farm,” he said. “It feels like another world.” The “rare occasion” home offers peace to the musician after a lifetime in the industry. “I always had to be so loud to get the endorphin rush of it all,” he said, noting he is now plagued by ear damage from years of music. On stage, Keelor now plays acoustic guitar instead of electric and takes breaks during performances. He can no long do clubs and said he misses jam sessions with friends and other bands. “It’s affected my social life incredibly,” he said. “So much has changed.” He’s had time to adjust at 59 years old, though, likening it to “how water wears a hole on the stone.” It also fits with the lifestyle he’s built on his acreage. Blue Rodeo has recorded there on and off since the early 1990s. Five Days in July was recorded there, along with the band’s most recent album In Our Nature. “It’s a good studio,” Keelor said. “It’s just a nice location and it sounds great.” With 16 records under the band’s belt, he said the album’s October release “went

pretty good.” He said the band is “night and day” from the one he and singer/ guitarist Jim Cuddy started in the punk scene 26 years ago. Personnel have changed along with songwriting, moods and technology, Keelor said. So much has changed he said he doubts he’d even like the band today when he started out in the industry. It seems to be working for him, though. “We got gold records out if it [In Our Nature] and the whole deal,” he said. Blue Rodeo is touring about 40 dates across Canada and will be stopping at Sun Peaks during the opening weekend of its free summer concert series. The seven-piece band also consists of Colin Cripps on guitar/ vocals, Bazil Donovan on bass, Glen Milchem on drums/vocals, Bob Egan on guitar/pedal steel/mandolin and Mike Boguski on keyboard. They will take the mountain stage, performing Blue Rodeo’s new and old tunes. It’ll be at least a couple of years before they do another album,

Keelor said, but he noted the band is “really good these days” and “more relaxed.” “I think we’re a little quieter and we can hear each other better,” he added. Blue Rodeo will be at Sun Peaks on Saturday, July 5. Axel Montaner will start the day at 11 a.m. on the Clocktower Stage followed by Margit Sky Band at

12:30 p.m. on the Upper Plaza Stage. Devon Coyote will perform at 4:45 p.m. on the main stage, followed by Blue Rodeo at 6 p.m. and Blackdog Blue at 7:30 p.m. on the Clocktower Stage. The after-party with Earthbound will be at 9:30 p.m. General admission is free. To purchase frontstage tickets or view

Illegal Dentistry In the past years - 5 illegal “dental practises” have been shutdown in Vancouver. It is suspected that there are more and only upon notification can the Dental College act upon the public’s tips. But the question remains, what is going on? Dr. Preety Desai Why are “unlicensed dentists” taking it upon themselves to commit physical abuse (i.e. practise dentistry) without a license? To practise dentistry in BC, candidates must complete a Canadian dentistry program, be registered with the BC College of Dental Surgeons and pass either the National Dental Examination Board of Canada (NDEB) or the National Dental Specialty (NDSE) exams. According to WelcomeBC, foreign dentists hoping to practise in BC must complete a full-time, twoyear qualifying program or degree completion at an accredited Canadian university, as well as registering with the college, and completing either the NDEB or the NDSE. As an alternative, dentists educated abroad can have their training assessed through an equivalency process, undergoing three assessments before taking the NDEB written exam and Objective Structured Clinical Examination. Potential candidates must compete and qualify for dental school after 2-4 years of undergraduate science. Dental school is a grind with over 6400 hours of classroom scientific education, hands on training and clinical patient treatment. Graduate school adds another 4200 hours of specialty education and training. In addition, we have to keep up at least 30 hours of professional upgrade education per year as a bare minimum - while most that I know are well above that. All dentists take an oath to protect the public and do no harm during our graduation ceremony - i.e. the Hippocratic oath. As such, it is absolutely obscene and offensive that a foreign dentist who either failed the NDEB examinations or did not bother to take the exams, taking it upon themselves to buy everything off of eBay and run a full fledged business and go to town! Protecting the public means having the proper skills (learned in school), up to date knowledge (continually upgrading) and owning the correct equipment (i.e. x-rays) to diagnose properly and perform dentistry with universal precautions (i.e. proper sterilizers and barrier techniques) to keep everyone safe. Just because a dental clinic (like many in Mexico and Central America) looks modern and up to date in the reception area - is no indication of following guidelines and regulations of infection control and sterilization of equipment. Certainly none of the raided Vancouver clinics even bothered to have anything more than rubbing alcohol to wipe blood off of their instruments this is definitely akin to a criminal offense - infecting an innocent person with HIV and hepatitis on purpose! Sterilization involves either pressurized heat and steam or chemicals that kill bacteria and viruses in a contained space - death of the most resistant bacteria in spore format are killed such as hepatitis, HIV and venereal disease. So when you are visiting your dentist next, understand that at least 6400 hours of their life has gone into keeping you safe and healthy!

ENTERTAINMENT classes or a burlesque party, which will be drawn at the Pin-Up show on Thursday, Aug. 14. Doors open at 8 p.m. for the 19-plus show and it starts at 9:30 p.m. For more information, go online to facebook.com/kamloopsburlesque.

Cirque du neige

Christmas will be a true circus this year as Cirque du Soleil returns to Kamloops for seven performances of Dralion at Interior Savings Centre. One of the company’s older shows — it premiered in Montreal in 1999 — it is inspired by Eastern philosophy and the quest for har-

mony between people and nature. The name comes from dragon, symbolizing the East, and lion, representing the West. The shows run from Wednesday, Dec. 24, to Sunday, Dec. 28, with no show on Christmas Day. The company describes the performance as one where air, water, fire and earth take on human form as the 50 acrobats, gymnasts, musicians, clowns and singers perform. Featured acts include the aerial hoop, hand balancing, hoop diving, an aerial pas de deus, juggling, skipping, trampoline and crossed wheel.

Tickets are available online at cirquedusoleil. com/dralion or ticketmaster.ca. They range in price from $45 to $145 for adults and from $36 to $126 for those 12 and younger.

Routes of Roots

Salmon Arm will host a pre-festival before Roots and Blues called Routes and Blues. The event, which takes place during the first two weekends of August — leading up to the annual festival — will combine music with hikes organized by the Shuswap Trail Alliance. It runs from Friday, Aug. 1, to Thursday, Aug. 14. For more information, go online to routesandblues.ca.

ANDERBERG Mrs. June May Anderberg passed away peacefully at Kamloops, BC on June 22, 2014 at the age of 81. She is survived by her daughter Linda Inglis of Kamloops and her sons Alonzo Anderberg of Salmon Arm, Clifford (Sharon) Anderberg of Kamloops, Graham (Christina D’Angio) Anderberg of Kelowna, and Tony (Dawn) Anderberg of Salmon Arm. June had six grandchildren, Marian (Irvin), Laura (Jim), Dan (Jennifer), Jeremy, Logan (Jen), and Dustin. Her angels will miss her — her great-grandchildren Brittany, Jordan, Faith, Mason, Paige, Nate, Neil, Brody and Jace. She will be remembered by her brothers and extended family in Alberta and many friends in both Kamloops and Salmon Arm. June was predeceased by her husband Al Anderberg (1985). June and her husband raised their family, travelling across Canada, working the family business of drilling water wells. They were also foster-parents in Salmon Arm, Golden, and Calgary. June raised not only her own children, but many others. There will be no formal service by request. Donations to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, 311 Columbia Street, Kamloops, BC V2C 2T1, in memory of June would be appreciated. Many thanks to the staff at Bedford Manor and Ponderosa Lodge, and to Doctor Mavis Hollman for the excellent care. Online condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com Schoenings Funeral Service 250-374-1454

He is survived by his sons, Lee (Susan), Gary, Kip (Caroline), and daughter, Merinda; and his sister Gail (John) of Victoria; along with his thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Glenn was born in Victoria at St. Josephs Hospital; he graduated from Victoria High in 1947. He married Kathleen in 1951 in Victoria, moving to Port Moody, then to Kamloops in 1978. He worked for the CPR from 1952-1986, happily retiring at the age of 55. Glenn and his wife Kathleen were constant companions, enjoying travels and endless activities together. Glenn loved to sing all the old time songs, and watch sports on TV, and watch his grandchildren on the soccer field. He was a fine gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour, who was loved and will be sadly missed. A service will be held at a later date in Victoria. We thank the wonderful nurses, staff, and Dr. Wynne who cared for Glenn at Ridge View Lodge.

Kit Tassell (Carson) Kit Tassell of Kamloops, BC passed away early Tuesday morning, on June 11th, 2014 at the age of 93 years old leaving the love of her life, Allan, after 65 years. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 7th, 1921, she was the only daughter of Samuel and Margaret Carson. She joined the Navy in 1944 after enlisting with a special group of Wrens and became a member of a chorus line for the “Meet the Navy Show” that began in Halifax and continued overseas. Kit’s remaining working years saw her as the “heavenly dispatcher” plying her unique style and flare to the admitting office at Victoria’s St. Joseph’s Hospital. In their retirement, Kit and Al continued their adventures with boating, travelling and the occasional game of chance. She made an impact on everyone she met. She will be sadly missed by family and friends. Kit is survived by her husband, Al, her daughter, Judy (Dick), her two sons, Ken (Leslie) and Mark (Teresa). She also leaves behind ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In her final years, Kit was lovingly cared for by the staff on 2B at Kamloops Senior Village. The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to all the caregivers and nurses who were part of her daily life. As requested, there will be no service or celebration of life at this time.

Margaret Brown

EDWARD JAMES LAPIERRE

MAY 16, 1930 ~ JULY 2, 1997

On the first day of summer, Margaret “Bubs” Brown passed away with loving family at her side. She was born November 16 , 1933 in Vancouver to Peter and Donna Jones. As an infant she was nicknamed Bubbles by her Dad ~ a name that stuck with her for life because it suited her vivacious personality. Bubs often said that all she ever wanted was to be a wife and mother and so at the age of 17 when she met and fell in love with “her quiet man”, Keith, her fate was sealed. They lived their entire married life in and around Kamloops, often in very rustic conditions but always with much love and laughter. They raised their three children on a firm foundation of love, honor, respect and trust. Bubs was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Don “Duke” and Jim. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Keith, son Jim (Sally) and daughters Kathy (Tom) and Leslie (Gord). She also leaves four treasured grandchildren, Sean (Liz), Lindsay (Ryan), Allison and Kevin and three great-grandchildren Nicolaas, Hannah and Jonathan. When first learning to talk, Hannah would phone her Granny BUGS and they would sing silly songs together. Bubs is also survived by her big sister, Hazel and a wonderful network of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends. The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses and doctors of Royal Inland Hospital’s 4th floor North. We were so blessed by the care and compassion this wonderful team gave Bubs and the family. A Memorial Service will take place Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Kamloops Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the MS Society of Kamloops. Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.kamloopsfuneralhome.com

Psalm 23

[A psalm by David.] The Good Shepherd You, LORD, are my shepherd. I will never be in need. You let me rest in fields of green grass. You lead me to streams of peaceful water, and you refresh my life. You are true to your name, and you lead me along the right paths. I may walk through valleys as dark as death, buth I won’t be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd’s rod makes me feel safe. You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows. Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, LORD.
