Iker still optimistic BCTF head calls Fassbender out for comments ahead of Kamloops meetings By Dale Bass
STAFF REPORTER
dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Jim Iker knows parents — and teachers — are wondering what will happen a week from today, when schools are scheduled to open their doors for a new year. The president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation would like to have an answer for them but the reality is he has nothing more than optimism. He’s confident the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) — the main negotiator for the government — is also optimistic and, Iker said, he knows veteran labour mediator Vince Ready is a phone call away from bringing the two sides together to get a deal. “Clearly, the government has the control in this, not BCPSEA,” Iker said as he criticized Education Minister Peter Fassbender for recent comments “that weren’t accurate and weren’t helpful. “For Minister Fassbender to think he has hands-off, well, he doesn’t.” Most recently, Fassbender criticized Iker for travelling to Kamloops late last week to attend the BCTF’s annual summer conference, saying the absence was making negotiations impossible. Iker said he spoke with BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron and Ready about the conference and assured them he was just a quick plane ride away from heading back should bargaining start up again. Soon-to-be newlyweds Dan Davidson and Amanda Makortoff were the first to sample wine at the downtown Kamloops Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Aug. 23. Allen Douglas/KTW

T
HE VINEYARDS have come to the market — now vintners are hoping the market will make its way to the vineyards. For the first time ever on Saturday, Aug. 23, wine sales took place at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market, following city council’s decision this past week to give the nod to sales of locally made wine and beer at the twiceweekly events in the downtown core. Harper’s Trail Estate Winery and Privato Vineyard and Winery joined the regular vendors on St. Paul Street on Saturday. Patrons were lined up in front of the winery’s tent, waiting
Kamloops wine now on offer at farmers’ market for 9 a.m., when liquor sales could start. “It’s been a long time coming and we’re very excited to be here today,” said Vicki Collett, owner of Harpers Trail Estate Winery. “It’s just another tool, another avenue for us to be able to showcase what we do — and our fine product.” Though the market will make her wine more accessible to the average resident, Privato owner Debbie Woodward is hoping the market will help bring marketgoers to her Westsyde vineyard for the complete tasting experience. “It’s great to get the exposure,” Woodward said. “People love to come to the winery. That’s where we want

them to come, eventually.” Reviews were positive amongst market patrons, with many customers stopping for samples. Amanda Makortoff was the first taster for both vineyards. She and her fiancé were testing wines for their wedding and were pleased with the convenience — though Makortoff said she was still a little uncertain what she thought of the introduction of liquor sales at the market. “I don’t know yet,” she said. “It’s kind of nice, so you can get all the shopping done in one place because you can get all your groceries for your dinner, then you can get your bottle of

wine for dinner or dessert. It’s kind of nice.” Collett said the market should provide wine sellers with an opportunity to sell their products to those who wouldn’t normally make it out to the vineyard. Customers who don’t drive are among those who the market will help her reach. Pat Moran walked over from his downtown home to grab a bottle at the Harper’s Trail booth. “It’s for a friend,” the 85-year-old said after buying the first bottle at the market. “She don’t drink, but her son is coming up from the States, so we wanted to give him a good Canadian treat.”

Bras boost breast-cancer event By Jessica Wallace STAFF REPORTER
jessica@kamloopsthisweek.com
It’s possible you recognized an old bra flying through traffic during afternoon rush hour last week. From zebra print to hot pink, red lace, padded, silk and sheer — 70 donated bras of all designs and cup-sizes waved in the wind near the Overlanders Bridge on Friday, Aug. 22, in the name of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. With just over a month until the Canadian Breast Cancer CIBC Run for the Cure, the colourful intimates flagged passing vehicles in an effort to bring breast cancer to the forefront of minds again in Kamloops. “People see pink, people see bras — they think breast cancer,” said event fundraising co-ordinator, Kelly Hall. The run began in Kamloops in 1997, but it’s only the second year local-event volunteers have held Bras Across the Bridge in anticipation of the annual oneor five-kilometre walk/run. About 4,000 vehicles drove by last

year, Hall said, noting the positive promotion. It prompted the return of the flying undergarments, which were donated by Value Village and others in the community. The volunteer group waved, vehicles honked and Hall is hoping the publicity will double the 32 teams registered. “I’d like to see at least 60 teams,” she said. Last year, 1,090 participants took part in Kamloops and $179,403 was raised, contributing to a total of 16,000 participants and $2.6 million raised in the B.C.Yukon region. Hall is hoping for more when Kamloopsians take to the the route this year, which begins and ends at Riverside Park on Sunday, Oct. 5. The park will be set up with live entertainment, food, beverages and a survivor tent, a wall on which participants can write messages about their experience with the disease and those it has impacted. Hall has lost two team members to breast cancer in the last four years while

participating in the event and she will be writing a message or two of her own. “Our most important thing is our Wall of Hope,” she said. The event is the country’s largest single-day, volunteer-led event raising funds for breast-cancer research, education and awareness. In 2013, it raised $27 million and attracted 130,000 participants across the country. This year, the foundation estimates 23,800 Canadian women and 200 men will be diagnosed with the illness. Registration is $40 for individual participants, with fees waived for those who raise a minimum of $150. Teams include 10 or more people and must be registered by Sept. 19 to receive t-shirts. For more information about the event, go online to runforthecure.com. For fundraising help, call 250-5715050 or email teams_kamloops@cbcfrun. org. Kamloops MLAs kept pace with their Liberal cabinet colleagues, according to the latest round of travel expenses released by the B.C. legislature. The expenses cover MLA travel between April 1 and June 30. Cabinet ministers posted nine of the 10 highest expense claims for the period. Doug Donaldson, NDP MLA for Stikine, was the only opposition member to make the top 10. His expenses of $18,138 were the seventh highest of any MLA’s. Kamloops-North Thompson MLA and Minister of Health Terry Lake racked up more costs over the period, with expenses of $17,575 — the ninth highest of any MLA. Minister of Transportation and Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone billed taxpayers $15,422 over the same timeframe. Since the end of the expense period, Stone has been documenting his travels around B.C. with help from his 10-year-old daughter, Hannah. Though the “Stone Family Staycation” was the subject of blogs and email updates to constituents, a ministry spokesperson said Stone was not on government business at the time, and the costs of the family’s Discovery Coast Circle Tour will not appear on the next round of filings. Top-travelling MLAs in this round of filing were Rich Coleman, Minister of Natural Gas Development and Housing, $25,691, and Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick, $22,423.
Nomination packages now available
Some have already declared, but now it’s time for candidates in this year’s local-government election to make it official. Nomination packages are now available for would-be School District 73 trustees, ThompsonNicola Regional District directors and Kamloops councillors and mayoral candidate. SD73 and city candidates can get their packages online at kamloops.ca, or pick up paper copies at City Hall, 7 West Victoria St. TNRD forms are online at elections.tnrd.ca, and available in hard copy at the TNRD officers, 465 Victoria St. Some candidates will have more work to do to complete the nomination package than in previous years. Earlier this year, council voted to increase the number of nominators required to 10 from from two to 10, which will also effect trustee candidates. The TNRD requires only two nominators. Candidates can turn in documents in person from 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30 until 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.

BCTF president Jim Iker spoke to attendees of the teachers’ union’s annual conference at Thompson Rivers University on Sunday, Aug. 24. Allen Douglas/KTW
BCTF, province, still at odds X From A1
Both indicated to him they had no issues with his attendance at the gathering, which ran from Friday, Aug. 22, to Monday, Aug. 25, and which saw hundreds of teachers take part in a variety of training sessions. Iker said he called Ready during the conference for any update and would be speaking with him again today (Tuesday, Aug. 26). The union president again criticized Fassbender for making any comments to media about the ongoing labour dispute, one that has seen the government lock teachers out and the union call a provincewide strike. He said he and Cameron agreed, once Ready became available to help with potential mediation, that there would be
a media blackout on any discussions. Last week, the BCTF accused Fassbender of “playing politics in the media instead of allowing bargaining to resume behind closed doors.” “It shows a lack of integrity and highlights the government’s ongoing attempts to derail meaningful negotiations,” he said. A stumbling block to a contract remains the ongoing court challenges to then-education minister Christy Clark’s decision to void the existing contract with teachers in 2002, agreements that gave the union the right to bargain class sizes and compositions. Since then, two courts have ruled the action violated teachers’ Charter rights, the most recent ruling coming earlier this year. The government is once again
appealing the ruling. The union has suggested a $250-million workload fund that could be used to address class size and composition but the proposal has not been accepted by BCPSEA. Iker said it’s unfortunate the government has taken this position, given it agreed last year to pay a California power company $750 million to settle a legal dispute. That case was the result of a B.C. Hydro subsidiary entering the U.S. state’s energy market and a concern the action had led to inflated energy prices. “The government has said that was a good deal for British Columbians,” Iker said of the law-suit settlement. “We’re talking about $250 million for our education system. “That would be a good deal for B.C.ers.”

Chances casino to grow By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER

With Gateway Casinos and Entertainment preparing to move to a new location and more than triple the size of its Kamloops casino, the city’s other gaming centre is looking at an expansion of its own. Chances Kamloops owner Pat Hart said she has applied for a development permit to expand the building at 1250 Halston Ave. on the North Shore. The proposed addition won’t change the number of slot machines on site, but will allow Chances to expand its dining area. “We’re just rightsizing our food and bev-

In an Aug. 22 KTW story on the ongoing education dispute (‘BCTF to hold special assembly in Kamloops’), an editing error led to the article stating the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA), the province’s bargaining agent, had extended lockout provisions to professional-development days and to teachers entering schools to prepare for the school year prior to the scheduled Sept. 2 opening. In fact, the BCPSEA, in a letter to the BCTF, said: “In light of the continued bargaining between the parties,

It will take about $727,000 to renovate the city’s former postoffice building on West Victoria Street — but its owners are hoping someone will be willing to do that. The Gordon Bregolis Building, once known as the city’s federal building, has been for sale for some time. The wooden structure on West Victoria Street was home to the Kamloops Christian Hostel for many years but was given to the Kamloops branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association when the shelter closed. Christine Adam, president of the CMHA board, said the building has many of the features one would expect to find in a structure built more than 100 years ago, including large wood staircases and bannisters, hammeredtin ceilings above the
dropped ceilings that were put in, and “an amazing heritage look and feel. “It could be a great office,” she said, “and, on the third floor, there’s a great room with a fabulous view to the north.” It does not carry a heritage designation,
however. The wood-casement windows in most of the building are original although the glazing has been replaced and upgraded through the years. The exterior siding is also considered to be the original and was milled from old-growth
fir and cedar trees. There are other aspects of the house, however, that aren’t quite as appealing, including its location on the busy stretch of Victoria Street where access can be a challenge, and the fact it has radiator heating. The United Way Thompson-NicolaCariboo worked with the CMHA office to have a feasibility study done on the 113-yearold structure that also once housed offices for land and titles, customs and Indian affairs. The report by JTW Consulting of North Vancouver notes the building needs extensive work to make it usable again. Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning costs, for example, are estimated to add up to $100,000. The report notes the building is “sub-functional rather than dilapidated with building systems in need of upgrad-
ing and general building components such as the roofing system and exterior-internal fabric in need of maintenance and renewal.” Excluding the basement, the 2 1/2 storey structure is about 11,500 square feet and is on land zoned for offices. There is an annex attached to the main structure. Adam said her board is hopeful some organization in the city will see the potential and have the resources to reclaim the structure. It’s why, although the property remains on the market, CMHA has established a 30-day period to receive offers from “local non-profits, businesses and heritage and conservancy groups.” Anyone interested or who wants more information can contact CMHA office manager Shelley Trudeau at 250374-0440 or at shelley. trudeau@cmha.bc.ca.
TRU prof pleads guilty to assault By Tim Petruk
STAFF REPORTER

A Thompson Rivers University professor who also serves as president of the Kamloops Child Development Society has pleaded guilty to an assault charge after beating up his wife in February. Bernie Warren pleaded guilty in Kamloops provincial court on Monday, Aug. 25, to a single count of domestic assault. Court heard Warren, 59, and his wife became involved in an argument while reorganizing their home on Feb. 21. Warren became agitated and kicked his wife in her back and buttocks, then grabbed her by the arms and threw her against a wall. The Crown alleged Warren also punched her in the face but he denied that
in court. After discussions with Kamloops provincial court Judge Chris Cleaveley, prosecutors agreed to continue with sentencing without the punching allegation. “I snapped — I lost it,” said Warren, who was representing himself in court. “But, it won’t happen again. “This incident will never be repeated. As a couple, we’re using this incident as a life lesson.” The Crown had asked for a suspended sentence and one year of probation. Warren pleaded with Cleaveley to grant him a conditional discharge, which would mean the conviction will not stay on his criminal record. Warren, an instructor in TRU’s School of Business, said he travels frequently to the U.S. to give talks and for personal vacations and was worried the conviction would make it difficult to cross the border.
He also said a criminal record could cost him the president’s seat on the board of the Kamloops Child Development Society. Court heard Warren already has a criminal record, however, having pleaded guilty to impaired-driving charges in 2003 after getting busted driving drunk in Jasper. Despite that, Cleaveley sided with Warren. “Mr. Warren has taken some steps to remedy the problem,” he said. “I’m satisfied that it’s in the community’s best interest that Mr. Warren be granted a conditional discharge, despite the magnitude of violence and his previous criminal record.” The assault conviction will be removed from Warren’s criminal record if he completes a one-year probation term without any issues.

Cavers explains his no vote on plan to move casino
A
WEEK AGO TODAY, city council heard reasons why Gateway’s Lake City Casino should — and should not — be allowed to relocate to a site on Versatile Drive next to Costco. The move involves relocating from its current address on Victoria Street downtown to the proposed site in lower Aberdeen and reorienting the facility to more of an “entertainment centre with gambling.” When decision time arrived, I did not believe the proposal strong enough for unanimous support. In my view, it demonstrated weakness in several important areas. Over the past few years, I’ve been consistent in my support for small business, as I believe them to be the lifeblood of our economy. Small businesses often have tremendous potential. Locally owned businesses are the foundation of our economy. They stick with the community through thick and thin because small business owners and their families live in the communities in which they do business. I was happy to see Tony Santo, CEO for Gateway Casino, attend the public hearing in person to give his speech and hear the community’s thoughts on the proposal. The city’s current Official Community Plan (OCP) was developed with significant input from residents throughout our community. The OCP clearly states a goal of focusing new cultural, entertainment, performing-arts and convention facili-
DONOVAN CAVERS View from CITY HALL ties within the downtown core. Modern economic thinking is focused strongly on economies of scale but, as with anything, the larger something becomes, the harder it is to ensure small but important details are not overlooked. Private enterprise should not be over-regulated, however; as a local government, it is our responsibility to balance individual interests with those of the wider community. The city has a planning department in part to ensure the community develops in a somewhat co-ordinated way. The old Cineplex Odeon site at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Victoria Street comes to mind as an example of a site in our downtown that was previously a buzz of activity but has sat dormant for about a decade. That building was always full of smiles. I’m sure there is a lengthy list of reasons why such a prime downtown location has remained completely unused.
Every time we allow the community to grow outward, we are essentially loosening our belt. It certainly doesn’t improve the fiscal attractiveness of investing in our downtown core. A vibrant downtown area attracts density and becomes a destination for locals and tourists. A bustling downtown is a visible sign of a city’s community pride and economic health. Research shows the so-called “built environment” is a major determinant of human well-being. I support development that marries itself with its surroundings (both near and far). I support development that is easily accessible by a variety of transportation methods (ie motor-vehicle, bicycle, by foot, public transit, etc). And, I support development sensitive to the goals of our community. Gateway Casino’s directors operate a profitable business because they know how to make money. This relocation is a strategic investment that will result in significant profits to the company they represent. (As a side note: I hope this relocation and enhancement finally results in something happening to that grungy old empty restaurant on the corner of Hugh Allan and Pacific Way. If you’ve ever passed it, I’m sure you know the one I’m talking about.) A newly branded Cascades Casino will be a remarkable facility when the ribbon is cut in a year or two. I just would have preferred to see the investment happen closer to the city’s core.
BCTF has misplayed labour dispute With one week left before students are supposed to return to the classroom, there seems little reason to think they will. Despite insistence from both sides that they want an agreement reached by Sept. 2, school yards will likely remain silent. Of course, few believed the two sides would find a negotiated settlement amid the lazy days of summer. The trajectory has always been toward a final showdown — one that is still coming. It is, after all, the government that holds all the cards. The Liberals are early in their mandate, meaning they are better able to weather the public backlash over the dispute. They have in their pocket a raft of public-sector settlements that suggest a negotiated agreement is possible. And, while there are many who are angered by the government’s bargaining tactics, there are many others who argue the BCTF is asking too much. The government also knows teachers cannot stay off the job much longer. Their strike fund is dwindling and their resources are drying up. Meanwhile, parents who may feel the sting of increased childcare costs should the strike continue, have been offered the salve of a $40-a-day payment. BCTF negotiators may be hoping for a legislated settlement, one that would allow them to face their membership as bruised but not beaten combatants. But, the fact is they have played their hand poorly. They have cost their members money that no settlement will recover. They have alienated their CUPE colleagues who suffer every day the schools remain closed. And they have underestimated the will of a government weary of more than two decades of conflict.

Ajax dam should be classified an ‘extreme’ risk Editor: The news that the Ministry of Energy and Mines has classified the proposed Ajax mine-tailings impoundment as “very high” according to Dam Safety Regulation (163/2011) raises more questions than answers. According to this regulation, a “very high” classification has a loss of life criterion of 100 or fewer. One “extreme” classification criterion is a loss of life of more than 100. The population at risk is defined as those who live, work or recreate in the dam-breach inundation zone. A tailings-dam failure in the Peterson Creek watershed would put in peril far more than 100 people. The Ministry of Mines needs to explain why it does not intend to classify the proposed Ajax tailings impoundment as having “extreme” consequences in the event of a failure. Another question is why have the proponents of the Ajax project, to my knowl-
edge, not disclosed the consequenceof-failure issue to the public, including investors? On May 29, the junior partner in the Ajax project, Abacus Mining and Exploration, issued a news release stating the new mine plan would “reduce the potential for adverse impacts from industrial activity to the city, nearby residents and other public infrastructure, while optimizing the value of the project.” The news release further claimed changes involved a “redesign of the tailings-storage facility from the previously proposed dry-stack tailings storage to a more proven wet-tailings technology.” On June 24, the issue of a tailings-dam failure was raised at the Ajax Community Advisory Group (CAG) meeting with the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. This issue was just one of many issues raised by the CAG about the new mine plan — issues most CAG members
believe warrant an expert panel review with public hearings. The response to date by the BCEAO is that no public comment period is warranted whatsoever for the new mine plan. People living downstream of the proposed Ajax mine also need to be aware the danger of a debris flow isn’t just from a tailings-dam failure. A significant failure of one of the waste-rock areas proposed by the mine could also generate a debris flow if a watercourse is affected. If the lack of disclosure and lack of a meaningful public-review process for the Ajax project is representative of environmental assessment in B.C., everyone, investors included, will bear the consequences of poorly reviewed and monitored projects, as the Mount Polley disaster illustrates. We must maintain all systems or risk catastrophic failure Editor: As a school teacher, citizen and consumer, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about different kinds of systems and the risks we run if we don’t maintain them properly. On the consumer level, vehicles have been on my mind. I’ve been kicking tires at the usedvehicle lots around town, trying to find something that meets my needs and my budget. It’s a fact about vehicles that, if you maintain them properly, they will generally serve you well for quite a while. And, if you neglect proper maintenance, things can go along well for a time. You can turn right, turn left, go, stop, back up — and you may be lulled into feeling maintenance isn’t really as necessary as some say it is. Watch out. If you’re running a mine with a tailings pond, things can seem just fine even if, perhaps, the inspection regime isn’t what it could be because there are fewer inspectors. Anyway, the companies can
police themselves pretty well, can’t they? And systems surely don’t just break down from one day to the next. They know their business better than anyone else and they definitely wouldn’t want some kind of disaster to occur. Red tape just costs extra money, after all, and only leads to inflexibility. If you park your train in or near a town, but haven’t been as rigorous with maintenance and performance standards as you should have been, you just might cause terrible destruction and loss of life but, really, how likely is that? You can neglect maintaining the system for a while but, again, watch out. Schools are another type of system that requires constant and wise maintenance. For a dozen years now, the B.C. school system has been deprived of hundreds of millions of dollars to the point where we are now the second lowest-funded jurisdiction in the

country in per-student dollars. According to Statistics Canada, we come in at about $1,000 per student less than the
Canadian average. So far, employees in the schools have made up for the shortfall with their personal efforts and money, but you can’t expect that to continue forever. Student achievement remains high. However, as with other systems, if you neglect maintenance and investment, you are bound to run into problems. Why run the inevitable risk when maintaining strong universal public education is one of the most important investments we, as a society, can make? To bring back the funding to at least the national average is not too much to ask. If you want to maintain your car, your mine, your trains or your school system, you have to spend the money it requires. Proper maintenance is a wise investment and it costs money. Money spent wisely ahead of time is money saved later. Let’s have no more system failures. Ron Ste. Marie Kamloops

Sask. premier backs aboriginal murder inquiry CANADIAN PRESS
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says he doesn’t know how long any level of government can ignore something like the murder of a 15-year-old aboriginal girl before looking at ways to prevent such deaths. Tina Fontaine was found wrapped in a bag and dumped in the Red River in Winnipeg. Her death has prompted renewed calls for a public inquiry into the high number of missing and murdered aboriginal women. Wall said provinces and aboriginal leaders back that call, even if the federal government isn’t on board. “I think when the provinces are united as we are, together with the national aboriginal leadership, I think there is momentum,’’ Wall said in a telephone interview with Canadian Press. “I think the RCMP have agreed in principle with the importance of an inquiry and I think
Police chiefs won’t take a position — yet VICTORIA — The head of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police says the organization has not been asked to endorse a public inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women and it has no position on the issue. Vancouver Police Chief Const. Jim Chu, president of the group, said the organization has not been approached by those asking for such an inquiry. However, Chu said, police chiefs have been discussing the issue and the group’s aboriginal policing committee will reach out to organizations such as the Native Women’s Association of Canada to find out more. Chu, whose department was involved in a public inquiry into serial killer Robert Pickton, said the recommendations to emerge from that process have been put in place in his city. Hundreds of police leaders from across the country are in Victoria for the annual meeting of the chiefs’ association. — Canadian Press there is momentum picking up. “And then you have the absolute tragedy that has been . . . highlighted . . . in Manitoba. I don’t know how long you ignore those kinds
of things at any particular level of government before you want to ask every single question that you can possibly ask to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.’’ In May, the RCMP
issued a detailed statistical breakdown of 1,181 cases since 1980. It said aboriginal women make up 4.3 per cent of the Canadian population, but account for 16 per cent of female homicides and 11.3 per cent of missing women. The federal government has firmly rejected an inquiry, saying it prefers aboriginal justice programs and a national DNA missingperson’s index. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said most cases like Fontaine’s are addressed and solved by the police. He added it was important to keep in mind the girl’s death was a crime and not a “sociological phenomenon.’’ The issue will be on the agenda when premiers and aboriginal leaders hold their annual meeting this week in Prince Edward Island. “There will be a call for an inquiry and it looks like the federal government is just saying no, so I’m not sure
there will be progress there, but the discussions are always helpful,’’ Wall said. “The aboriginal leadership of the country puts these issues on the table and immedi-
ately I think premiers, provinces and territories start to look at . . . what are we doing to respond to these things. It’s [been] helpful to me in the past to come out of the meet-
ings and talk to officials and say ‘Where are we at?’ “We’re making progress on some of the issues, but you know I think more can be done.’’

HERE ARE 1,007 REASONS why the Kamloops Broncos should take solace in a lopsided loss to the Okanagan Sun. That was the announced attendance at Hillside Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 23. It was the biggest crowd in franchise history. Bronco backers and traveling Sun supporters watched the visitors from Kelowna win 54-16, but it wasn’t quite like the spankings of years past. “That’s a better team,” Sun head coach Shane Beatty, a Kamloops product, said of the Broncos after the game. “They’re better coached. They’re better on offence. They gave me headaches for the first half trying to figure them out.” Kamloops was 3-0 heading into the Interior showdown, but it had twice beaten the Valley Huskers of Chilliwack and the other victory came against the Westshore Rebels of Victoria, both considered among the six-team league’s bottom-tier squads. Tournament Capital residents wanted to see how their local junior football team stacked up against a championship contender and they showed up in droves. There was no question which team was better on Saturday, but the Broncos seem to have closed the gap on the Sun, who improved to 4-1 with the victory. The home team was able to move the ball on offence in spurts, but it failed to capitalize on a number of red-zone opportunities and costly turnovers led to points for Okanagan. Kamloops finished the game with 255 yards passing and 61 yards rushing. Broncos’ quarterback Stephen Schuweiler was in tears after the game,

falling on the sword and accepting blame for his team’s demise. “I take full responsibility,” said the Broncos’ gunslinger, who proved again he is not afraid to throw into coverage. “I played absolutely horrible. Three interceptions. You just can’t do it against the Okanagan Sun if you expect to win.” The loss certainly wasn’t all on Schuweiler, who threw one TD pass and three interceptions. There were poor decisions from the man under centre, several of which led to turnovers and Sun touchdowns but, when the Broncos put together productive drives, he was a catalyst, with some of those throws into tight areas going for big gains. best to complement the passing game, rushing for 39 yards on 10 carries. Receiver Derek Yachison showed the fans at Hillside why he is the go-to guy on Kamloops’ offence, paying the price for catching balls under pressure from the hard-hitting Sun secondary. He caught six passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Neufeld and Brody Bernier were also threats through the air, each amassing more than 40 yards receiving. “I don’t think the score was at all showing what we did,” said Yachison, who limped off the field with an ankle injury in the third quarter but later returned. “We moved the ball. The bottom line — we just didn’t score touchdowns. If we did
that, it would have been a much different game.” Kamloops’ defence did its best to fend off the Okanagan attack, but it was never able to stop the run and massive holes opened up for a slew of Sun running backs, including Dillon Fortune, who carried nine times for 123 yards and one TD. Beatty told KTW the Sun’s run game has demoralized opposing defences throughout the early part of the BCFC campaign and that’s what happened on Saturday. Okanagan finished the game with a whopping 333 rushing yards, to go along with 154 yards passing. X See SUN A12

“It’s very disappointing seeing them gash us up the middle of our defence, Broncos’ head coach Duncan Olthuis said after the game. “Our kids were prepared for how physical it was going to be, but they just didn’t execute. “I’ll take the blame for one of their touchdowns. I said go for it on third down and we didn’t get it and they in turn score. And they in turn scored — Olthuis was speaking about the killer instinct the Sun have, developed over time in a mature program, which is lacking in the Broncos. Perhaps the best example of the Sun’s ruthless finishing came near the end of the first half. With Schuweiler having just missed on a TD pass, the Broncos settled for a field goal, making the score 19-13 for Okanagan with five minutes to play before the break. The visitors, bolstered by a driveextending roughingthe-passer penalty on Kamloops, scored on

their next possession to make it 26-13. On the Broncos’ ensuing drive, Schuweiler threw a pick and the Sun capitalized, finding paydirt again to extend the lead to 33-13, a crippling blow just before the half. The Broncos had another chance to reach the end zone with 23 seconds on the clock, but again settled for three points. Kamloops president Dino Bernardo told KTW he is looking forward to the next few
years, when his young roster, full of 18- and 19-year-old players, comes of age on the field. The Broncos still have a way to go before they can hang with the Sun. There were too many turnovers. There were too many penalties. There were too many missed tackles. There were too many points that went begging. There was a coup de grâce. On the second last play of the game, Lliam
Wishart, the Valleyview Vikings standout who opted to play for the Sun over the Broncos in the off-season, caught a 45-yard touchdown pass, his only snag of the game. “That’s the kid from Kamloops, too, one disgruntled member of the Broncos uttered on the sideline. Wishart, who was targeted several times late in the game, received a nice ovation from friends and family in the crowd and he was thrilled to have scored
the Broncos to measure themselves against one of the league’s best. Kamloops is next at home on Sept. 20, when Valley is in town, with games against Westshore on Vancouver Island slated for Sept. 6 and Sept. 13. The crowd at Hillside on Saturday certainly wasn’t treated to a dismal performance by the Broncos, who were thrilled with the community’s support and already looking forward to next week
after the game. “Every time you lose, you’re definitely disappointed, but there are some things we can pull out of this, which, in prior years, wasn’t the case, Yachison said. “We need to get back to the film room and fix a few things on special teams. “We know our defence is young and they’re going to give up a lot. It’s up to us to score every time we get into the red zone.

Knies impressed at Blazers’ training camp; Blue vs.White tonight By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER
sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
At least one of the five American players at Kamloops Blazers’ training camp has improved his stock with the team’s scouting staff heading into tonight’s (Aug. 26) Blue vs. White game. Phillip Knies, a Scottsdale, Ariz., product who the Blazers picked in the fourth round of the 2013 WHL bantam draft, has added his name to the Blue and Orange’s list of promising 16-year-old forwards. “He’s really opened our eyes,” said the Blazers’ director of player personnel, Matt Recchi, who’s had an eye on Knies since rookie camp got underway on Friday, Aug. 22. “He’s been very good. He wants the puck. He wants to make a difference in the hockey game. “He’s got a very

some insight.” Knies was injured and missed Blazers’ training camp in 2013, but he bounced back and had a strong season playing with the under15 Arizona Bobcats. If the five-foot-nine, 170-pound centre does
not crack Kamloops’ roster this season, he is expected to play with the under-16 Colorado Thunderbirds. Jake Kryski, Quinn Benjafield and Jermaine Loewen are among the other 16-year-olds in with a shot of earning a spot on the team. They, along with Knies, will be featured in part three of a fivepart Blazers’ season preview in KTW on Thursday, Aug. 28. General manager
Craig Bonner cut the training-camp roster to 42 from 60 on Monday, Aug. 25. The remaining players have one last chance to impress tonight during the Blue vs. White tilt, which gets underway at 7 p.m. at Interior Savings Centre. “It’s for guys that are on the bubble to hopefully to step up,” Recchi said. “Usually, players are able to separate themselves.” Knies will wear No. 9 for Team White. The roster will be trimmed to between 30 and 35 players after the game on Tuesday. Kamloops opens the pre-season against the Vancouver Giants at ISC on Friday, Aug. 29. Game time is 7 p.m.

Sloan won the tour’s Nova Scotia Open on July 6, earning $117,000 and sky-rocketing up the money list. The 27-year-old will play full time on the PGA Tour next season, which starts in October. Help defend Huber’s title By Adam Williams STAFF REPORTER
adam@kamloopsthisweek.com
Three times a week, Ken Huber helps the Tournament Capital’s boxers reach new heights. Now, he’s hoping Kamloops can help him do the same. Huber, who boxes in the semi-professional B.C. Combative Sports Association (Combsport), is raising money to help him in his defence of the World Boxing Council’s Canadian Cruiserweight championship in October in Windsor, Ont. “Being a single dad and working full-time, the money’s just not there,” Huber told KTW. “Without help from the public, it’s not even possible. “I’m really hoping to just get a few people that believe in me and want to see that belt get back to Kamloops where it belongs.” He will travel east for the championship on Oct. 14 and is scheduled to fight for the Canadian title on Oct. 17. A heavy-duty mechanic by day and the coach and manager of the Kamloops Boxing Academy by night, Huber is the city’s most-decorated current amateur boxer. He is not only the defending Canadian champion, but is the Combsport provincial champion and a twotime Western Canadian champion. His amateur record sits at 27-4, which includes, among his other titles, two B.C. silver gloves heavyweight championships and two B.C. golden gloves heavyweight championships. Combsport named him the fighter of the year in 2013. “One of the things I’m really looking forward to is Eastern Canada and Ontario is hugely boxing-based,” Huber said. “Western Canada always has been a little bit behind and it doesn’t seem like boxing is

nearly as big of a deal here. Ontario is just all about boxing. “So, I know that I’m going to be facing top competition and I’ll get to make some connections, meet some guys that run some of the biggest gyms in Canada and meet some really, really talented boxers.” Huber said there are four fighters registered in the cruiserweight division (178 to 200 pounds), in which he fights. He’s familiar with one of those opponents, Renie Placid, who he beat in 2013 to capture his first national title. “Real good boxer,” Huber said of Placid. “We had a real good fight. “I won a unanimous decision over five rounds, but a real tough guy and a real good competitor.” Huber is taking a
different approach to his training this time around, giving his body more time to rest and recover than in past years. He started heavy workouts earlier this month and will train through to the beginning of October, before taking a week off before his bout. His fundraising is meant to offset some of his training costs. He will be taking trips around the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland to work with high-quality sparring partners and coaches. He’ll also need to pay for the travel and accommodation costs associated with his title fight. He’s fundraising online for the first time (gofundme.com/ dcwci4) and is hoping to hit the $3,500 mark. “I’ve got the mindset
that if every person that saw that donated a dollar, I’d probably reach my goal,” Huber said. “I don’t need $5,000 donations. I just need help. “Every little bit counts.” Despite the stresses of raising money, training and preparing to fight some of the best competition in Canada, Huber is excited to have things underway. He has the dedication, now he just needs the support. “I’m super excited, things are really starting to come together here,” the 31-year-old said. He will turn 32 just two days before his championship bout. “I feel great. I’ve never felt better actually. “Going into this training camp, I’m hungry. I want it and I’m going to go get it.”

AN APPLE A DAY When children eat a well-balanced lunch, it’s easier for them to concentrate at school and have energy for afternoon activities. Studies show that, in addition to providing energy, healthy lunches filled with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and protein can lead to better grades, especially when compared with children eating high-fat, salty lunches.

ò Obituaries & In Memoriam ô BEN MARK On August 18, 2014 Benjamin Grant Mark passed away at the age of 80 years. He was born March 15, 1934 in McCreary, Manitoba to parents Herman and Kathleen Grace (nee Scott) Mark. Ben was predeceased by his parents, his wife Shirley in 2011, his two sisters Elizabeth Mark, Cleo Kathleen McMunn and brother David Moffat Mark. He is survived by his siblings Helen Annie Newton, Dorothy Joan Hazell, James Robert Mark and Stanley Herman Mark. Ben was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He founded and published the “Senior Connector Newspaper” in 1993. Thanks to Dr. Bantock and the staff of 7 North, Royal Inland Hospital for your exceptional care of Ben. BREATHES THERE A MAN with soul so dead Who never to himself hath said, This is my own, my native land! Whose heart hath ne’er within him burned, As home his footsteps he hath turned From wandering on a foreign strand! If such there breathe, go, mark him well; For him no minstrel raptures swell; High though his titles, proud his name, Boundless his wealth as wish can claim Despite those titles, power and pelf, The wretch, concentred all in self, Living, shall forfeit fair renown, And doubly dying, shall go down To the vile dust from whence he sprung, Unwept, unhonored, and unsung. The Lay of the Last Minstrel (excerpt)

MICHELINE AUDREY STAINTON (IREDALE) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Micheline (Mich) Stainton in Kamloops, BC on August 19, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.
November 24, 1976 – August 15, 2014
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we regret to announce the untimely and tragic passing of Jeff.
Mich was born to Norman and Aline Iredale in Calgary, Alberta on January 31, 1953. She spent her early years enjoying swimming, playing volleyball, and vacationing in beautiful Balfour, BC. In Balfour, she first met the future love of her life, Timothy. They married on May 19, 1973 and raised two fantastic and darling daughters. Mich devoted her time to her family, remaining at home for many years before returning to school, then finding life-fulfilling work as a post-secondary instructor. First, at The College of the Rockies in Golden, BC; then at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC. She touched the lives of many throughout her life. Her zest for life and unique sense of humour will be missed dearly. Left to mourn her passing, husband of 41 years, Timothy; daughters Cammie (Trevor) Leadley and Jenn (Shane) Stringer; the light of her life, her granddaughters Maddie and Sophie Leadley; her mother Aline; her brothers John (Patti), Don (Nina), Geoff (Lisa); mother-in-law Mabel; sisters-in-law Leah and Kathy (John); and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Breakthrough by Nel de Keijzer Santa Barbara, California The tears of grief Have washed away To Those I Love And Those Who Love Me When I am gone, release me, let me go, I have so many things to see and do, You mustn’t tie yourselves to me in tears, Be happy that we had so many years. I gave to you my love, You can only guess how much you gave to me in happiness, I thank you for the love you have all shown, But now it’s time I travelled on alone. So grieve a while for me if grieve you must, Then let your grief be comforted by trust, It’s only for a while that we must part, So bless the memories within your hearts. I won’t be far away, for life goes on, So if you need me, call and I will come, Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near; And if you listen with your hearts, you’ll hear all my love around you, soft and clear. Showing how cool being on a chair can be By Jessica Wallace STAFF REPORTER
jessica@kamloopsthisweek.com
A
LEX KILBA WANTS to grind rails on his wheelchair. The 21-year-old Kamloops man has been looking at some new wheels for a couple of years and has been fundraising with the goal of upgrading his setup to hopefully one day be sponsored. His sport of choice is WCMX, the wheelchair equivalent of BMX and skateboarding. Kilba got a taste for it years ago after watching a YouTube video starring Aaron “Wheels” Fotheringham. “He did a backflip in his chair,” he said. Kilba could relate to the video. Like Fotheringham, Kilba was also born with spina bifida, suffering permanent spinal cord damage as a result of incomplete development of the nervous system. It has resulted in Kilba being a paraplegic from the bellybutton down. It isn’t a problem for him. After all, Kilba noted, he was born with it. Others, hover, just don’t get it. “Society is kind of messed up because they think that people in chairs are not able to do anything,” Kilba said. “They don’t believe in me is my biggest issue.” Kilba has been practising WCMX at the Brock skateboard park for the last seven years. It has been a place for him to show what he can do in a wheelchair. “The guys at the park, they’re all like, ‘Holy crap, that is so cool.’” “Going to the park gives me that opportunity to show how cool being in a chair can be.” He hopes to inspire others on a wheelchair to go out and live life. Kilba also wants to eventually travel for the sport. He has created WCMX videos and has posted them online in the 10.375" X 2.857 hopes of getting picked up by a

sponsor. First, though, Kilba wants to buy a chair specifically designed for the sport from Box Wheelchairs of California. He said his everyday chair isn’t up-to-snuff for the ramps and drops that he’s been eyeing up at the park.
“In the chair that I have, I can’t really do that much,” he said. “Everything that I want to do would either break me or the chair.” The WCMX chair is built for the abuse of the skateboard park. It has a stronger frame and better suspension and comes with a price
final
rage of about $4,300. Kilba lives at home and works one day a month at the Kamloops Funeral Home as a greeter. He has raised $400 while fundraising for his new chair, with donations from local businesses and a car wash.

On a wing and a prayer — osprey saved Staff and community members saved a young osprey from a slow and agonizing death at Tranquille on the Lake recently. During the wind and rainstorm that lashed the area on the night of Aug. 14, gardeners Addie and Derek watched one of the juveniles attempt to fly from the nest, which is atop a power pole. However, its foot was wrapped in twine adult birds use to decorate the nest. Its flight was abruptly halted as it dangled upside down, hanging by its leg and unable to get back up on the nest. Thanks to a hastily assembled team of citizens, it was rescued in the dark and taken to care facilities at the B.C. Wildlife Park the next morning. Quick action by
Tranquille development manager Tim McLeod resulted in a truck and bucket lift being donated by Artistic Sign Service and local biologist Rick Howie agreeing to come and help rescue the bird. Driver Brent Galbraith and wife Jessica, an animalhealth technologist at Central Animal Hospital, arrived shortly after 10 p.m. With several flashlights to guide the activities, the truck was positioned so the bucket could be safely raised to the nest, which is near high-voltage power lines (power had been disconnected) nearly four-storeys high. Brent carefully maneuvered the bucket close to the nest while one of the adult ospreys looked on from the next pole. Howie sliced away
the strong twine, while Brent gathered up the remaining pieces and brought the osprey and rescuers back to the ground. Jessica noted blood and bruising of the wings and the bird was tucked away until it could be taken to the wildlife park the next morning, where it was cleaned up and given anti-inflammatory drugs. Howie said it is essential that farmers pick up bailing twine after feeding hay to their cows because ospreys decorate their nests with the brightly coloured plastic rope. Howie said he has seen young birds across B.C. get their feet tangled in the twine and ultimately end up dangling from the nest and dying unless rescuers can get to the site in time to cut them free.

Notice to Electors of Alternative Approval Process Overlanders Bridge Rehabilitation This notice is to advise electors in the City of Kamloops of the intention to adopt the "Overlanders Bridge Rehabilitation Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 14-1-174". The purpose of the bylaw is to borrow an amount not to exceed $9,300,000 to finance the cost to resurface the Overlanders Bridge including concrete repairs to the deck, new membrane, asphalt surfacing and the reconstruction of the 430 metre pedestrian sidewalk on the west side of the bridge, that will be repaid over a period not to exceed 15 years. It is estimated that the borrowing will result in a tax increase of $15.58 per year for the average residential property. A copy of Bylaw No. 14-1-174 and a summary of the proposal are available from the Legislative Services Division at City Hall during business hours each business day of the week. For project details, please contact Darren Crundwell, Capital Projects Manager, at 250-828-3535 or dcrundwell@kamloops.ca. The City of Kamloops proposes to borrow the money to rehabilitate Overlanders Bridge unless, by 4:30 pm on September 26, 2014, at least 10% of the electors in the whole of the City of Kamloops sign an elector response form opposing the implementation of the proposal unless the City of Kamloops holds a vote. The number of elector responses required to prevent the City of Kamloops from proceeding unless a vote is held is estimated to be 6,841. A report respecting the basis on which this determination was made is available upon request from the Legislative Services Division, City Hall.

The Scotiabank and BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk to fight animal cruelty in Kamloops will be held at Pioneer Park on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 9:30 a.m. with the walk starting at 10:30 a.m. Proceeds from the walk will benefit animals at the Kamloops SPCA. Participants can
enjoy a variety of entertainment and activities, including games, a pancake breakfast and fundraising prizes. The event brings animal lovers and their furry friends together. “This is the largest single event to help fight animal cruelty in British Columbia,” said Krista Constantineau, manager of fundraising events at the BC SPCA in a press release. “We are overwhelmed by the amaz-
ing participation each year — it’s so great to see thousands of people come together across the province to help B.C.’s most vulnerable animals. “Our supporters not only raise essential funds, the events are so much fun for twolegged and four-legged participants.” To register or donate, and to get the latest news and information, go online to spca.ca.bc. ca/walk.

No camping gear left behind with Santa Fe XL By Neil Moore
METROLAND MEDIA wheels.ca
C
AMPING used to be simple. It was all about communing with nature and turning one’s back on the burdens and baggage of everyday life, of reducing life’s complexities to the basics of food, shelter — and a little time to think. I’m no aspiring Henry David Thoreau, but his reflections on simple living had inspired my golden rule for the outdoors: If it didn’t fit in my backpack, it didn’t come. Marriage and kids, however, have mandated some flexibility. Freeze-dried meals,
tiny tents and paperthin foam pads have all given way to an equipment list that might have supplied the Lewis and Clark expedition. So, thank you Hyundai, for the Santa Fe XL. And, I say this with tongue firmly in cheek, as this year’s trip to Grand Bend seemed to lack for nothing in terms of camping gear to meet every need — real and imaginary. Should we need to cook a seven-course meal, perform minor surgery or be forced to live in the woods for the next six months, I believe we had it covered. All of this fit with ease inside the commodious cargo hold of the
2014 Santa Fe XL. Unlike its smaller sibling, the five-passenger Sport, this family hauler gets three rows of seating thanks to an added 215 mm in length and 100 mm in wheelbase. These numbers may not sound like much but translate into nearly half a cubic-metre more interior volume and 240 litres of added cargo. You may recall the Santa Fe once did have a backbench — in the 2006 model — and that you required the size and agility of a spider monkey to get in and out. Hyundai wisely punted it the next year. In the 2014 XL, a full-sized adult can ride comfortably in the third
row, with enough head and legroom for most. But, having only two kids, we didn’t need it and folded flat the 50-50-split bench to go from 383 to 1,159 litres of cargo space. This could nearly double again by dropping the second row. My tester was the top-trim Limited with Saddle Leather (MSRP $43,399), which gets captain’s chairs in the second row instead of a 40:20:40 bench. These recline and are heated, as well. The Limited equipment list is anything but, and would rival premium-sport utilities. Leather seating that is heated and cooled up front, with 12-way power adjust and mem-
ory for the driver, navigation with eight-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, 10-speaker Infinity audio system, HID auto-levelling headlights, panoramic sunroof and 19-inch alloys are among the many features. But, even the base front driver at $31,099 comes well-equipped. You get the usual power windows and locks, along with manual air conditioning, seven-passenger seating (upholstered in a soil and staticresistant fabric), seat heaters up front, tilt/ telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth, 18-inch alloys and more. The driver’s seat
even gets eight-way manual adjust, with two-way power for the lumbar support. If you want AWD, move up one level to Premium trim (MSRP $35,099). This includes a pile of added comforts like dual-zone climate, third-row HVAC controls, heated rear seats, 12-way power adjust for the driver’s seat, heated steering wheel, rear side-window sunshades and power liftgate. Needless to say, the Santa Fe XL made the perfect conveyance for our three-hour-plus drive, keeping us comfortable and cool within its well insulated and nicely appointed cabin. The perforated and double-stitched brown
leather is proof positive that Hyundai has upped its game here. This was complemented by matching soft touch in the doors and sparing use of faux woodgrain in the dash. Bottom line: If you’re looking for stylish and content-rich family transport, the Santa Fe XL should be on the shopping list. It may lack the offroad chops of Nissan Pathfinder, Dodge Durango and even the Honda Pilot, but few families spend much time off the asphalt. Instead, they’re ferrying kids to and from hockey practice, hauling groceries and tackling the odd cottage road, which is exactly where the XL shines.
