Merry Christmas Will it be white?

A white Christmas in Kamloops will likely remain nothing more than a dream in 2014. Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist said a weak Arctic front was forecast to push into the Kamloops area on Christmas Eve, but was not likely to bring snow to the majority of the Tournament Capital. “I’m thinking perhaps above Aberdeen Mall and the higher elevations in Sahali, they might get a little bit of snow that might stick for the morning,” Lundquist told KTW. “Down by the river, you might not get anything at all. It could be a green Christmas.” The forecast for Kamloops matches what Lundquist expects to see throughout much of the Southern Interior. “In Kelowna, up towards Joe Rich maybe [there will be snow on Christmas],” he said. “But, down by the lake, it’s even less likely than in Kamloops because the lake is so warm.” The Weather Network’s list of Canadian cities guaranteed to have a white Christmas is a short one — Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Quebec City, Saguenay, Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Iqaluit. The network says snow on Christmas morning is likely in Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal and Fredricton, and possible in Vancouver, London, Toronto and Charlottetown. Only Victoria and Halifax have no chance of a white Christmas, according to the list. The last time Kamloops had a brown Christmas was 2011, when the temperature hit 5.8 C on Dec. 25. This year, Environment Canada is calling for a Christmas Day high of 3 C and a low of -4 C. The Weather Network expects a high of 0 C and a low of -6 C, with a 30 per cent chance of precipitation.

Thank you — and Merry Christmas! DALE BASS

STAFF REPORTER

dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

Olivia and Josh Glover, you both rock! The siblings left notes at the KTW office this week. It’s best to share them with readers in their own words. Josh writes: “My birthday is on Dec. 25th. Same as last year, I decided to take donations to your Cheer Fund. Instead of receiving presents from my friends, I was able to raise $120. Hope this helps you guys!” Sister Olivia writes: “I am nine years old. I wanted to raise money for the Christmas Cheer Fund, so I sold rainbow loom bracelets by donation at my brother’s hockey games. I was able to raise $122.55. I hope I helped the Christmas Cheer Fund.” Talk about a warm, fuzzy way to enter into the last week of this campaign. Thank you both and thanks to mom for driving you to our office here to bring your own Christmas Cheer.

There’s been a real flurry of donations in the past few days, so this story will be shorter than earlier ones because we here at KTW want to make sure each and every one of you who has contributed to our first Cheer Fund are acknowledged. Thanks also to Dean Nicholson and his staff at Investors Group on Sahali Terrace. That’s a company that supports many charities but, Dean said, the Cheer Fund has always been one dear to him and his colleagues. And thanks to Ed Jurista and his team at Interior Plumbing and Heating, who dropped by with a $5,000 donation. There’s been a real flurry of donations in the last few days and our total topped $40,000 when I wrote this story on Monday for today’s paper — a curse of early holiday deadlines. We will update once the holidays are done and our work world gets somewhat back to normal. The truth is, we had no idea what would come from the

to never set a goal and always be thankful for whatever is collected because it’s always going to be money that’s needed by the agencies. There will always be hungry people to feed as does Sensational Soups and the New Life Mission. There will always be women and children to give refuge to, as does the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter. As an RCMP member, William Vincent Joyce was ordered to take guns from those who depended on them for their livelihood during the Second World War.

Spirit, letter of the law SPECIAL TO KTW

editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

My father, William Vincent Joyce, served in the Yukon during the Second World War as a constable with the RCMP. When Canada entered the war, an order was issued by Ottawa that police across the country were to confiscate weapons from “aliens.” Aliens were Japanese, Germans and Italians — whether Canadian citizens or not. At that time, a few old German men lived in the Yukon and had been there since the days of the Klondike Gold Rush. Most were hermits making a living from trapping or from cutting wood to be sold as boiler fuel to the paddlewheelers

T H E

His practical handling of the law “was compassionate in the true spirit of Christmas.” plying the Yukon River. At that time, members of the RCMP patrolled the area every few months on dogsleds, checking on the men, delivering mail and taking census. When the order came shortly before Christmas in 1939, to confiscate weapons from these people, my father and his partner knew well that rifles and handguns were essential to the lives they lived. Trappers needed guns both for protection and for hunting. They also knew these old men posed no threat whatsoever to Canada’s security.

P L U M B I N G

E X P E R T S

When they checked on the men considered aliens and after reading them Ottawa’s order, they asked which one of their many guns was used the least, took that gun and left the rest. That gun was sent by the RCMP to Ottawa to be destroyed. My father practised both spirit and letter of the law, tempered with common sense. He satisfied Ottawa that he had done his duty, and he satisfied himself that his practical handling of the law was compassionate in the true spirit of Christmas.

Christmas trees. There is nothing green in Mazatlan except, perhaps, the faces of tourists who drink the water. My wife, Joyce, is traditional and conventional and wanted a Christmas tree to decorate in our hotel room. After a diligent search, she discovered a shrub bearing green leaves in the middle of a thorny wasteland near our two-and-threequarters-star Mexican hotel. I was dispatched to retrieve it. “My friend, Elias, says there are deadly, poisonous snakes around here,” son Douglas informed me. “If they bite you, you swell up.” “Yuck!” said daughter Alison. “Mom, if Daddy swells up, will he look funny?” “Don’t worry,” Joyce assured her. “Daddy has a pocket knife for protection.” Buoyed by these words of encouragement, I strode manfully into the wilds, where I was immediately accosted by every known specie of noxious thistle, thorn bush and cacti. Moments later, I encountered a large yellow and black iguana. There was an instant personality clash and we parted company. Despite suffering a number of grievous wounds from the underbrush, I arrived at the green bush, cut it off and retreated south. I then stepped on something brown and not cuddly scurrying along the ground. “Yow!” said I. “Dad, did a snake get you?” called Douglas. “Mom, will Daddy swell up now?” asked Alison. “Dear, don’t injure our tree!” shouted Joyce. With heroic determination, I returned to my family, clothes rent and body bloodied, but unbowed. Presenting the bush to my wife, she sized it up critically. “It’s not right.” she said. “It just doesn’t look Mexican. I’ll fix it.” Then she picked off all the offending nonMexican green leaves and took it to our room. I followed. To have a drink — but not Mazatlan water.

HAID JOULE

No blue Christmas with brother, Elvis at home MIKE WEDDELL

SPECIAL TO KTW

editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

It’s tough for some at this time of year and a joyful celebration for others. I remember a time past near the winter solstice. Our older brother, Mark, had left home abruptly. I never really had a chance to say goodbye. We were as close as two brothers can be. Like so many others, he moved to the city. Some of my little friends whispered that he was never coming back. I was 12 when he left. As a family, we thought we might never see him again. That made us sad. It was especially hard for me and mum. Just us two taking care of everybody else. Each year, when Mark’s birthday rolled around near the end of

November, she would get desperate and frantic. She felt her last words to her oldest son, spoken in anger, were the sole reason for his departure. I felt he had forsaken me.

I also believed I would see him again somewhere down the road. He promised before he left as he held me close. Mum worked to pass the time, to get through Christmas. I had my music from

WKBW across the lake in Buffalo. I listened to Howlin’ Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson growl and moan about life. I howled along with them and thought of Mark, who loved the blues. His favourite song at this time of year could only be played on Christmas morning. It was performed by his idol, Elvis Presley. He used to tell me Elvis was the best white blues singer of all time — except, maybe, for Paul Butterfield — but Elvis had the better voice. Mark entertained us with his version, gyrating in the living room surrounded by brightly wrapped presents and twinkling lights.

The morning I remember, it had just snowed, a skiff on the black, icy roads. Dad was about to drop the needle on O Come All Ye Faithful so we could parade down, oldest

to youngest, as we did every year. There was a knock on the front door. Silence. Dad opened it and there stood our big brother in the light of early winter.

“It would really be a blue Christmas without you guys!” he said, “How about a little Elvis?” Mum broke into tears, Dad grinned and the rest of us charged down the stairs.

W FORATCH OUR IN-S SPE TORE CIAL S!

We affirm that: 1/ Patients at the end of life should receive diligent and competent care to relieve their pain and suffering. The physician has the obligation to use all the means available to achieve this end. 2/ If a patient refuses treatment or requests its withdrawal, his or her wishes must be respected. 3/ Modern palliative care skills, drugs and technology permit adequate symptom control for all terminally ill patients. These methods should be universally accessible. 4/ A physician who is caring for a dying patient, and who cannot adequately control the person’s symptoms, should have access to the necessary expertise and support to be able to do so. 5/ When suffering remains uncontrolled by state-of-the-art palliative care, individually adjusted sedation to a point of comfort may be used. In this, as in all palliative care, the goal remains optimal quality of life. 6/ To provoke death voluntarily, by lethal injection or any other method, cannot be considered under any circumstance as “medical care”, and is contrary to medical ethics. It is never necessary to kill a patient in order to end his or her suffering. The 2400-year-old Hippocratic tradition was a major advance in civilization. It forbids euthanasia and mandates the protection of the weak and the maintenance of trust between the physician and the patient. It calls on physicians and other health professionals to use their knowledge and skills to heal the sick, creating a climate of mutual solidarity. It is ironic that the accepted standards of this ancient code of conduct, written at a time when the means of countering end of life suffering were very limited, might be considered inadequate in this age of refined capacity to control symptoms. 7/ We must learn from the negative experiences of countries that have legalized euthanasia. Decriminalization often causes more problems than it is claimed to solve; those documented in the medical and legal literature include: - High rates of euthanasia without consent; - The impossibility of ensuring adequate reporting and respect for safeguards; - A loss of trust in the physician-patient relationship; - Conflicts within medical teams and within patients’ families. 8/ Medical licensing bodies must continue to fulfil their role as protectors of the public and of life, and support physicians in their efforts to improve the quality and accessibility of care of the dying, thus allowing all patients to receive excellent symptom relief throughout their illness and at the time of death. SPECIAL TO KTW

editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

My husband was killed in a motor-vehicle accident in May of 1990. My children were 12 and 13 at the time. When Christmas rolled around, they were adamant that we continue the family tradition of going “out in the bush” and cutting down our own tree. My son had a broken arm at the time from a hockey injury, but this tradition was important. We brought the tree home, got it all decorated and were sitting down to dinner when we heard a “swooooosh!” The tree had fallen down.

sitting down to dinner when we heard a ‘swoooosh!’

My son had the brilliant idea of getting some of his weights and tying the tree to the weights, which were “perfectly positioned.” A few days later and guess what?

“Swoooooosh!” As my in-laws were coming from Ontario to spend Christmas with us, it was important that it looked like business as usual, so my son got another bright idea. He put nails in the ceiling and tied the tree to the nails. All went well after that, but distributing the gifts from under the tree had to be done very carefully, so as not to touch any of the props! To this day, I still think of that time with very fond memories and a chuckle. I will have both my kids and my four grandchildren here for Christmas this year and I bought my first artificial tree. I am looking forward to the comments.

Hicketts vs. the world

ALLEN DOUGLAS/KTW

FULTON FINALES

The Fulton Cup wrapped up on the Warner Rentals courts at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday, Dec. 19. In the senior boys’ final, Westsyde secondary edged the South Kamloops Titans 71-67. The Titans topped the NorKam Saints 59-46 in the junior boys’ final. On the girls’ side, South Kamloops won gold in both the senior and junior divisions. The Titans beat the Saints 60-55 in the senior girls’ gold-medal game and South Kamloops topped Westsyde 50-33 in the junior girls’ title tilt. For game summaries, photos and a list of Fulton Cup award winners, go online to kamloopsthisweek.com.

Joe Hicketts will play for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship. “It was a dream of mine and to have that dream at my fingertips is definitely very surreal,” Hicketts said. Hicketts is a Kamloops product who rose through the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association ranks before being drafted by the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League. At the Christmas break, Hicketts is the highest-scoring defenceman in Canada, his 38 points the most in the WHL, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The 18-year-old was stellar in this year’s Subway Series that featured WHL stars against touring Russian juniors. In April, Hicketts helped Canada win bronze at the World Under-18 Hockey Championships in Finland. More impressively, despite not being chosen in the June NHL draft, the five-footeight, 175-pound rearguard opened some eyes in the summer, earning an entrylevel contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Hicketts will be the first Kamloops native to play in the World Junior

JOE HICKETTS

Hockey Championship since Mark Recchi donned the Maple Leaf in 1988. Eric Brewer played for Canada at the world juniors in 1998. He was born in Vernon and raised in Ashcroft before moving to the River City at age 14. He starred with the bantam AAA Kamloops Jardines Blazers, as did Hicketts. Shea Weber, from the Shuswap community of Sicamous, played for Canada in 2005. Team Canada announced its final roster following the juniors’ 2-1 overtime loss to Russia in exhibition play on Friday, Dec. 19. Hicketts did not play in the game, fuelling speculation he had already made the cut. The tourney begins on Boxing Day and wraps up with the goldmedal game on Jan. 5 in Toronto. Canada’s first game is against Slovakia on Boxing Day, with puckdrop slated for 5 p.m. All games will be broadcast on TSN.

MERI KIRIHIMETE

Kim Villalva’s grandmother, Frances King, knows when she rings a bell, an angel (Frances’s daughter and Kim’s mother) will be there in a flash.

Every time a bell rings . . . KIM VILLALVA

SPECIAL TO KTW

editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.” That cherished line from It’s a Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart, wraps up the story of George’s generosity and selflessness and it warms our hearts each year. I wasn’t always a fan of the movie, though, and I blame that famous line. I hated the little girl’s sugary voice as she drew out each word in that now-famous sentence. One Christmas, I was studying for exams and I found myself glancing up from my book to follow George through his life. Before I knew it, I was hooked. And, wouldn’t you know,

I cried at the last line of the movie. An angel had gotten his wings. I never thought this movie line would impact me as it did that Christmas. Every time my mom and I talked on the phone, Mom would interrupt with, “Gotta go! The bell is ringing!” and she would hang up on me so she could help my grandma. My 95-year-old grandma, who had a stroke almost 20 years ago, has grown even more dependent on my mom due to weakened muscles. So, if mom is ever out of the room, Grandma rings a bell — a cowbell — and mom comes running. She helps her move from one chair or bed to another. Mom will do what she needs to, even if it means losing sleep

throughout the night with numerous bell rings waking her up — even if it means the ringing bell is constantly interrupting phone calls. We’ve always said mom is truly an angel here on earth — she is just that loving and giving. One night I heard, “The bell is ringing!” Instead of losing patience, I found myself smiling because I actually felt the warmth from her selfless acts of love for my grandma. I knew the little girl in the movie didn’t have it exactly right when she uttered those precious words. My mom didn’t just get her wings when the bell rang; she’s already had them for quite some time. Mom was born with her angel wings.

Artist and future KTW reader Jamie Petruk, 3, offered an abstract take in his multi-media Christmas drawing — featuring highlighters, pens, Sharpies and sticky notes.

In December 2006, Kamloops This Week photographer Dave Eagles captured the scene in the above photo. In the picture, Jessica (left) and Christa Lester smile for the camera, but baby sister Eva lets out a cry for her mother during a pancake breakfast with Santa at Dallas elementary. The photo to the right was taken this month and features the Lester Sisters (Christa, now 14, and Jessica, now 12) reuniting with Saint Nick. As you can see, baby sister Eva, 9 (holding the original edition of KTW containing the front-page photo) is far more at ease when visiting the man from the North Pole. Mom Victoria also sent along the Christmas story below for KTW readers to enjoy.

My parents left Kamloops and made the Caribbean their home for approximately 14 years. They lived on a very small island and built themselves a bed and breakfast.

As there was very little available on the island, they travelled to the U.S. to get a lot of stuff they needed, such as toilets, bathtubs, beds, etc. They also got a car from the U.S. and had it shipped to the island. When my parents needed smaller items, they would contact me

You see, they have a large yard and a very energetic dog that tears up the yard. The gift I chose for my dad is grass seed. bout 100 Cirque performers, crew and staff members will be in Kamloops over the holiday sea-

son. For many of them, it means Christmas away from their home countries — there are 19 countries represented amongst the group — and it means spending Christmas in the Tournament Capital. For a group better described as family than co-workers, it may not be such a big deal. Dralion’s arena show, after

all, has been on the road for over four years, with many of them having been with the show since it began back in 2010. The show landed in Kamloops on Christmas Eve, with performances at Interior Savings Centre until Dec. 28. The show will be pulling down its curtain for good in January, after a stop in Anchorage. For now, they’ll spend Christmas in Kamloops, which, for some of them — like Tim Hastings — means a quick trip home. But, for many, it means hanging out together. And, there’s plenty planned to celebrate the holiday season

on the road. There’s a speakeasy-themed cabaret party and talent show — imagine what a show that would be along with a movie day. They’ll have the chance to explore Kamloops, too. But, there won’t be much time, with seven Kamloops performances packed into four days. Dralion’s story is based on Eastern and Western culture, tied in with the four elements, which are represented by different performers throughout the show. The show includes a variety of acts over a two-hour performance — from clowns to acro-

bats and aerial, skipping, juggling and trampoline routines. There’s no bad seat in the house, with their stage impeding floor space and the set reaching high to the ceiling, where performers can often be found hanging down from. Nineteen semi-trucks are used to transport the gear for the Dralion show, which includes about 3,000 costume pieces, a 26-foot aluminum set, a full gym and mobile kitchen. Dralion is one of almost 20 shows by Cirque du Soleil, a group that began as street performers in Montreal 30 years ago and has grown to international recognition with thousands of employees, and is best

known for its resident shows in Las Vegas. There are evening and matinee shows in coming days in Kamloops, with no performances on Christmas Day. Catch it at 4 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, and Saturday, Dec. 27, or at 1:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28. Ticket prices vary, starting at $55 and can be purchased online at ticketmaster.ca.

As Yoshi sat and watched me, I heard a sound from Brandi and Sage that had me whipping my head around. Sure enough, there they were, up on a kitchen chair. I yelled just in time to

HERI LA KRISMASI

Det. Midgley and the pawnbroker ELMA SCHEMENAUER

SPECIAL TO KTW

editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

Detective Midgley entered the pawnshop and addressed the long-nosed man behind the counter. “Good afternoon. I’m investigating the case of the duchess’s missing Christmas stocking. “Do you know what it looks like? the pawnbroker asked. “Something like that, the detective said, pointing at a display, indicating a red stocking decorated with sapphires. “Ah, yes, the pawnbroker said. “That stocking was pawned by a small, gray mouse in a yellow jacket. He lives in the duchess’s castle. Detective Midgley wrote something in his notebook.

A21

“I’ve often told the duchess her castle is full of mice, the detective said. “The mouse said his name was Herbie, the pawnbroker continued. “I lent him $50 in return for the stocking. He was injured and needed medical supplies. “What a pity, Detective Midgely said. “Did he say what happened? “After the duchess went to bed on Christmas Eve, Herbie and his cousins started playing in her living room, the pawnbroker said. “Yes, the detective said. “A few minutes before 1 a.m., they started a game of Hickory Dickory Dock. They ran up the duchess’s clock. Suddenly it struck them. All the mice were killed except Herbie, the pawnbroker said. Detective Midgely sighed. “How sad.

“Indeed, the pawnbroker agreed. “ Herbie, seeing his cousins lifeless on the floor, became angry with the duchess for keeping such a dangerous clock. He marched into her bedroom and pointed an accusing paw at her. “She paid no attention, so Herbie got revenge on her by stealing her Christmas stocking. The detective tapped his pen on his notebook. “Do you expect me to believe that? he asked. The pawnbroker shrugged. “Why not? “I’m a detective. My mind is trained to sift information, distinguish fact from fiction. I know your story can’t be true. “How so? “Simple, Detective Midgely said. “Everybody knows the duchess doesn’t have a clock in her living room.

I had an excellent experience recently. I was in Walmart and my son was asking for every toy in the store. My son is adopted and has been a member of the family for just over a month. He has toys at home, but he is always wanting to get more right away. As we are so close to Christmas, I had given him a $3 budget, but he was pointing out everything he

just had to have. I gave him the budget not because I couldn’t afford to buy him something, but to teach him patience. I want to be able to give him the best Christmas he’s ever had, but I can’t do that if he gets lots of toys and things beforehand. Saying no to a child like this is the hardest part of being a new parent, especially when it is for their own good. (He has never received much that he has been allowed to keep and it’s only nat-

ural that he wants all his dreams to come true, all at once.) A man came over to me and offered me $20 to buy my son a toy. I have never seen this man before and I told him how much I appreciated the gesture, but I refused the money. He thought I was not giving in because we couldn’t afford the toys. I explained I had my reasons for the budget and thanked him very much. Even though I didn’t take the money, the feeling of goodwill

has remained with me. It takes so little to give that feeling and it is good to pay it forward. Thank you again, sir. You have made my Christmas season.

P.S. I did spend a little more for an activity for my son that was more fun for him than threequarters of the more expensive toys he was looking at on all the shelves.

Adam is lovingly remembered by his large family, in Canada and in Germany, and by his many friends. Adam slipped suddenly into a coma December 21, 2012 just days before his 77th birthday, and ascended to heaven January 11, 2013. In the meantime, his comfortable and personalized ICU room at Royal Inland Hospital overlooked his beloved St. Ann’s Academy, at which he had served for many years, and he was visited daily by many family members, friends, and clergy. He passed away peacefully, with several of his children by his side.

Papa or “Chief” was always very excited about heaven - we’re sure he had a direct route! Keep having fun up there, Papa!

When snowflakes dance on winter winds And coloured lights shine Christmas Cheer, When children’s laughter fills the air And family gathers from far and near, I try to celebrate with them And not let my hurting show, But the empty spaces within my heart, As this season seems to grow Till oftentimes it fills the days And many nighttimes too, With aching thoughts and memories Of Christmases we spent with you. Yes, memories do hurt, it’s true But I have this feeling too I’m so glad I hold these memories For with them I hold part of you. So for now I’ll wipe away the tears And join with loved ones dear To celebrate this Christmas time, For I know that, in my heart, you’re here.

Merry Christmas Jess ♥ Forever & Always We Love You Mum, Dad, Kyle, Char, Lil’ Jesse Your family and all your friends

Adam was deeply committed to the Catholic faith, his congregation of Sacred Heart Cathedral, and especially to studying and spreading the message of Mary of Medjugorje.

Me

In Loving Memory of Born in 1935 in Krasna, Bessarabia, Romania. A man with a giant heart, he loved to sing, cook, play the harmonica and guitar, pray, build, garden, and help others. Many people experienced the joy of tasting his delicious cooking at Ziebart’s Restaurant, St. Ann’s Academy, his home, or as delivered to their houses.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightening they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

In Loving Memory of

JANET NORAH WALLACE MARCH 1, 1937 ~ DECEMBER 24, 2011

Time goes by like a flash of light Memories are vivid both day and night I remember the day I first saw your face You were sixteen, all beauty and grace. Our marriage was filled with both laughter and tears What a wonderful journey for fifty-five years We all wish we had much more time together But life can change quickly, much like the weather. Your talents shone through in so many ways Gardening, crafts, and games you did play We all miss you dearly and wish you were here But we know life is a journey that we cannot fear.

Janet, our love for you is eternal ... The Wallace, Robertson, Hewitt, Craig, Leigh, Box and Nordstrom families

Pennies From Heaven I found a penny today Just lying on the ground But it’s not just a penny this little coin I’ve found. “Found” pennies come from heaven That’s what my Grandpa told me He said angels toss them down Oh, how I loved that story . He said when an angel misses you They toss a penny down Sometimes just to cheer you up Make a smile out of your frown So don’t pass by that penny when you’re feeling blue It may be a penny from heaven That an angels tossed to you. Hike the Kamloops silt bluffs TERESA CLINE

SPECIAL TO KTW

teresathetraveler.com

A

s you drive into Kamloops from the east, the majestic silt bluffs lining both sides of the South Thompson River glisten in the sun, welcoming you to our beautiful city. How often have you looked at them and wondered what it would be like to hike through them and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the landscape? For those who put on their hiking shoes and just do it, there are numerous gullies and sink holes as well as grassland vegetation, some recovering Ponderosa pines, flowering plants, insects, birds, deer and coyotes waiting to reward you for your efforts. On one side of the river, the bluffs are part of the city’s Valleyview Nature Park and the other side of the river is Tk’emlups Indian Band land. The main trails are on the Valleyview side and span from Valleyview through Juniper and as far as Barnhartvale. The best place to park is at the Valleyview Arena. Be sure to wear proper hiking shoes and bring a bottle of water.

IF YOU GO To get to the trailhead at Valleyview Arena, take the Highland Drive exit on the TransCanada Highway. Follow the road until you see the arena on your left. To discover other interesting places to see in B.C., go online to teresathetraveler.ca.

TOP 3: Stylish wheels for 2015 Some of the nicest cars to watch for in the new year Chrysler 200 Base $19,945

Chrysler stunned the marketplace with the introduction of its completely new 200 Sedan, resetting benchmarks for style, panache and performance within a fiercely competitive segment. With a starting MSRP of just $19,945, the 200 undercuts many of its competitors, yet its real strength is found in its range of trim levels and power options. The base engine is a 2.4L four-cylinder affair that feeds 184 horsepower to the front wheels through a segment-exclusive nine-speed automatic transmission. Going upscale in the 200 brings with it Chrysler’s powerful 295 horsepower Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine paired with the nine-speed autobox and allwheel-drive traction. Standard features include eight airbags, Keyless Enter ‘n Go, and Chrysler’s Uconnect 3.0 multimedia centre. Options include Blind Spot Monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, and Active Park Assist. With four distinct trim levels, the Chrysler 200 can match the wherewithal of many pocketbooks while employing the latest in safety and technology to deliver an affordable upscale driving experience.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 is one of Driveway’s Top 3 picks for the 2015 model year’s most stylish whips.

DRIVEWAY

of $34,900, the TLX delivers plenty of sportinspired luxury built around a 206 horsepower 2.4L four-cylinder power plant fused to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Propulsion is directed frontward unless the V6 Technology Package and Acura’s Super-Handling AllWheel-Drive system with torque vectoring are opted for, in which case, all four wheels share in 290 horsepower produced by the 3.5L SOHC i-VTEC mill. A sophisticated nine-speed automatic transmission further contributes to the engaging performance of the V6-powered TLX. In addition to a more rigid body structure, the TLX provides increased safety and collision avoidance with the use of technology such as jewel-eye LED headlights and Acura’s Lane-Departure Warning and ForwardCollision Warning. Comfort and convenience essentials include the availability of premium 10-speaker audio along with voiceactivated navigation.

Looking remarkably like the highly successful Audi A4 Sedan despite casting a shadow 245mm shorter, the new A3 Sedan is sure to capture the attention of entry-level Audi buyers that scorn the A3’s hatchback design despite the vehicle’s praiseworthy driving dynamics and general practicality. Pricing for the new A3 Sedan starts at $31,100 with the 170 horsepower 1.8L TFSI I-4 power plant turning the front wheels through the auspices of Audi’s six-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. Upping the ante to $35,900 secures a 220 horsepower 2.0L TFSI I-4 connected to all four corners via Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive technology. Diesel power is also available in the A3 Sedan, though paired only with frontwheel-drive. Option combinations include Audi’s Styling Package, Navigation Package, and their sport-oriented S line Package. Audi has always been a technology leader, and the A3 Sedan shares in that reputation with a vast array of onboard safety and protection systems.
