NOW? We continue our annual Where Are They Now? series, in which we catch up with newsmakers of the past. Today, we touch base with former Thompson Rivers University president Roger Barnsley. More Where Are They Now? profiles can be found inside today’s paper and in tomorrow’s edition of KTW.

MURDER ON CHERRY ‘A balanced life’ AVENUE

STAFF REPORTER

Roger and Paula Barnsley are enjoying retirement. They remain involved in the community of Parksville.

After retiring from Thompson Rivers University — for the second time — Roger Barnsley made an unexpected discovery. He really likes to be working, but without the 12-hour days. Retirement in Parksville has given Barnsley and wife Paula that new reality. They are both busy on boards and with organizations, but they don’t have to deal with the daily grind of heading to the office. In fact, Barnsley said, he joined a golf club this

year and has found himself out on the links a lot. The best part? His golf buddies don’t keep score. While Kamloops was home for the Barnsleys for several years as he headed up University College of the Cariboo as its president and saw it through the transition to TRU, Barnsley said he’s not in the River City

much these days. Instead, he and Paula are more likely to be somewhere down in the Amazon, on the Galapagos Islands, touring through Machu Picchu — or in Toronto visiting grandchildren. Barnsley said Parksville is a great new home for him and his wife because he has three other grandchildren

The council handles all post-secondary articulations in the province and is recognized worldwide for the quality

of work it does, Barnsley said. He also joined the Vancouver Island Health Authority board this year and is a member of its health-quality committee and is finishing his fifth year on the board of the B.C. Automobile Association. “It’s a balanced life and we’re really enjoying it,” Barnsley said.

One person is dead and another is in police custody after an altercation in a North Kamloops apartment. RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said police received a report of a murder just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30. “A deceased female was located inside an apartment on Cherry Avenue,” Bush said. “A 41-year-old male has been arrested for murder and is known to police.” Bush said investigators believe the victim and the suspect were associated to one another. Because the Kamloops Law Courts are closed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, it is not known when the accused will appear in court. Bush said no additional details are being released at the time being. “It’s in its very early stages and we’re not releasing every detail,” she said. The Kamloops RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

Sheri Syrette married Jeff Stuckenbrock at the B.C. Wildlife Park on the weekend, with marriage commissioner Bill Abley officating. Making the wedding that much more special was the fact Syrette’s terminally ill father, Mickey, was able to attend from Oregon.

Sheri Syrette posted a question online about how to put together an inexpensive — and quick — wedding and the ideas poured in. Syrette and fiance Jeff Stuckenbrock had been planning a wedding eventually, but their timeline was dramatically shortened. Syrette’s dad, Mickey, has terminal cancer and was told to change his plans from a spring visit to getting to Kamloops as soon as he could. That meant heading from his home in Springfield, Ore., in time for Christmas —

and a wedding at the B.C. Wildlife Park. Syrette, who is on a disability pension after several significant health issues and emergency surgeries, said many people and businesses stepped up to help the couple and their two children create an ideal wedding. Someone made them a cake, another did Syrette’s makeup, McCleaner’s cleaned the dress someone provided, another donated rings and the photographer is providing them with all the digital memories of their whirlwind day on a disc. With two-month-old Lola and 23-month-old Tillie alongside the couple, marriage commissioner Bill Abley per-

formed the ceremony at the gazebo in the park on Saturday, Dec. 27. Syrette’s friend, Kelly Owen, was maid of honour and Stuckenbrock asked his nowfather-in-law to be his best man. When Stuckenbrock was 15, his parents were killed just before Christmas, so he had no family that could share the wedding moments with him. Syrette said the day turned out to be perfect, made even more so by the beautiful snowstorm that blanketed the city, leaving her in tears. “It was just so perfect,” she said. “I’m sorry, but it’s my daddy and we wanted him to be there.”

Branchflower goes from mayor’s chair to visits with grandchildren ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

Fifteen years after he handed back the mayor’s chain and retired from city hall, Cliff Branchflower is living a quieter life. In place of council meetings, the former mayor of Kamloops has an acre of fruit trees to tend on his Brocklehurst lot, and the demands of a black and white cat named Lucky to cater to. “He followed our daughter home down the road about four years ago,” Branchflower explains on a quiet weekday morning, as Lucky prowls around the living room. “She couldn’t find a home for him, he was just a kitten, so he came here.” The Branchflowers have their own luck. All of their children still live in the neighbourhood, as do nearly all of their nine grandkids. Visits with the grandkids have played a big role in Branchflower’s post-city hall days. While he still follows city politics, don’t expect him to say much about the current mayor and council, whose inauguration he attended in early December. “I try not to form an opinion,” he says. “I never liked being secondguessed when I was in office and I try not to second-guess our current crop.” Branchflower never set out to be mayor. When he and his wife, Ruth, moved to Kamloops in 1956 so he could take a job as a typesetter with the Kamloops Sentinel, it wasn’t meant to be more than a temporary stop, as had been the case with previous newspaper jobs in Alberta, Ontario and northern B.C. But, there was something about the town Branchflower says he couldn’t help but like. “Every city has its personality and I liked Kamloops’,” he says. “My dad retired from the farm to Kelowna and we used to visit him — in fact, our intention when we first moved here was to

go to Kelowna. “The people there, I think having premiers of the province there gave them delusions of grandeur. “Kamloops was more my kind of town, a working stiff’s kind of town.” He came to the city’s top job in a similar way. A school trustee for 15 years, Branchflower made the jump to alderman in 1980. Though he had served as board chairman for the school district multiple times, he said moving up to mayor wasn’t in his plans until Mayor Kenna

Cartwright passed away early in her first term as mayor. Branchflower would go on to win in a byelection, and serve for two more terms after that. “I just kind of fell into it,” he says. Though he has fond memories of the time in office, Branchflower says retirement also has its perks. “I had about 35 years of elected office of one kind or another,” he says. “It was fun while it lasted, but there’s more to life than sitting around boardrooms.”

MORTGAGE MATTERS Renters!! Are you ready to buy? People rent for very good reasons, and you may have many of them...but have you ever wondered if you are ready to buy? Here are a few considerations to review when deciding if you are ready to buy. 1) The Rental Market – What are the rents projected to be in the near future, how much

are you paying compared to similar rental units, what could your rental dollar do if it was put toward a mortgage payment?

2) Employment – How safe is your employment, are you committed to the work force or considering school, is your income showing signs of stability/ increase/ or decrease, are you happy with your job? 3) Happiness – Is your current home meeting all your needs today, will your needs change in the near future, can your home suit your future needs? 4) Rate Trends – Low interest rates can mean your payment dollar can go further. Taking advantage of periods with low interest rates can put you in a higher value home for the same monthly payment as a less expensive house with a higher interest rate. What are the interest rates expected to do? 5) Inventory – Perhaps most importantly...what is available for sale in your price range, in the neighbourhood you prefer and in the style of home that you desire? A premature step into something that is only second best for you and your family begs a “for sale sign” in your future. Get it right the first time. Shop the market and be prepared to take a break if what you see doesn’t make you happy. 6) Down Payment – Down payment is not always an obstacle if you are ready to buy. Some lenders will allow a borrow downpayment. However, in most cases, lenders like to see a 5% downpayment and 1.5% closing costs. This can come from a gift from family, savings, RRSP withdrawal etc. 7) Nobody Moves Nobody Gets Hurt – Staying exactly where you are involves the least amount of work, least amount of change and least amount of money out of your pocket...in the short term. Preparing yourself for home ownership is something that can start today and gets you set up for the long term. A trip to your mortgage broker is part of that plan. Contact me if you are interested in my once per month “mortgage school” home buying education series. Homebuyers and supportive friends and family are welcome!

Out of the Cold program seeking volunteers DALE BASS

STAFF REPORTER

dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

The Out of the Cold program has been busy this season, but it could use some helpers and donations. Bud Forbes, head of

the board that runs the program at St. Paul’s Anglican Church on Wednesday nights, said with no government funding, and relying mostly on volunteers, the winter-shelter program can always use

more resources. Laundry expenses, for example, exceed $2,000 to provide a bed for up to 25 people every Wednesday. Add in hot meals and toiletries and the cost to run the program is about $14,000. Right now, Forbes said, organizers have about $8,000. Shift captains receive an honorarium, but are trained to handle any unexpected situations

that might arise. Captains work shifts from 6 p.m. to midnight, from midnight to 6:30 a.m. and from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., with the latter shift the one supervising cleanup. With the rooms the program takes over on Wednesdays needed for other groups the next day, they need to be cleaned and everyone must be out by 8:30 a.m. Forbes said the pro-

This year, BC Housing opted to not fund it, giving the money to the Kamloops branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association to provide shelter beds at its Emerald Centre.

Paging Andre Christianson SOUTH KAM GRAD IMMERSED IN NATION’S POLITICAL WORLD CAM FORTEMS

STAFF REPORTER

cam@kamloopsthisweek.com

The work may be as simple as fetching a glass of water, but one Kamloops student is also becoming steeped in the nation’s history and seeing the daily workings of federal politics. Andre Christianson is one of about 40 parliamentary pages working in the House of Commons, a oneyear, part-time job he has obtained while he ends University of Ottawa in a business program. The South Kamloops secondary grad learned about the page program from his mother, who was online looking for scholarship opportunities. “I figured the opportunity to work at the House of

Commons and to go to university in Ottawa for a year is not something you want to pass up, he told KTW in a telephone interview. Christianson started in August in the page-training program and now puts in 15 hours a week in the House. He will earn more than $15,000 for his year’s work. The job entails traditional fetching duties: getting water or photocopies for MPs, answering phones in the House and running messages to MPs. In the words of the Parliamentary website: “Professional, impartial and efficient service has become a hallmark of the Page Program. Christianson said beyond working in the historic confines

From South Kamloops secondary to the House of Commons: Andre Christianson landed a year-long job as a parliamentary page, which has given him an up-close-and-personal look at the political process while he attends university in Ottawa.

NURSE TESTED FOR EBOLA IN KELOWNA From A1

Dr. Bonnie Henry, Interior Health medical health officer, said the health-care worker had been monitoring her health and agreed to remain within a two-hour distance from the hospital, one of several designated for Ebola testing in the province. The monitoring period is 21 days. Henry said the patient arrived back in the province on Christmas Day and was staying in Kelowna. On Sunday, Dec. 28, she reported a low-grade temperature increase and sore throat to the health authority. Because the symptoms persisted, the IHA arranged to have her come to hospital to test for any infection. She drove herself to the hospital on Monday, Dec. 29, at about 6 p.m., entering through a back door at the emergency room directly into the isolation room. The test was done at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. “As expected, the preliminary test is negative and it looks like influenza, Henry said, noting Ebola is spread through direct contact. Ebola-related tests will be redone in coming days, Henry said, and tests for other likely ailments will also be done. “We’ll be watching her very carefully and then following tests will be done, Henry said. On her Facebook page, Gordon said she was surrounded on her trip home through Brussels, London and Calgary with “hacking, coughing travellers, one who apparently generously shared their virus with me. Here I sit now in the hospital on the receiving end of people dressed in full PPE [personal protective equipment], waiting for test results which will — no doubt in my mind — show that I have a boring old influenza.

of the House, rewards include “seeing how the country is run and how they [MPs] interact and how decisions are made. “It’s opened my eyes to how Parliament works. The highlight of

the day is seeing the daily battle of wits during Question Period, he said. Christianson said he plans to return to B.C. in the fall and will switch university programs, likely attending film school in Vancouver.

IN 2015, RESOLVE TO JUST DO IT

Each week, we feature a web question of the week on our letters page — on page A9, opposite this editorial page. With the new year upon us this week, our current question pertains to resolutions for 2015. As of this writing, it would seem resolving to improve one’s life sits a distant second to grabbing the clicker and watching TV, if the numbers in our online poll are to be extrapolated onto the greater population. Our poll question — Which New Year’s resolution will you adopt on Jan. 1? — has four answer choices, with the most popular so far being “To hell with it, pass me the remote,” with 58 per cent of the vote. Relaxing on the couch has thus far surpassed exercising more (24 per cent), eating healthier (nine per cent) and tending to bucket-list items (nine per cent). Perhaps the poll numbers will change today and tomorrow. We do know there is plenty of time to change one’s lifestyle, if so desired. According to various publications featuring an assortment of experts, there are ways to help you stick to your resolutions. These include making a concrete plan, putting something of value on the line, seeking support, not losing faith when faltering, telling friends and family about your goals, breaking those goals into smaller goals and rewarding yourself when you accomplish one of them. Jan. 1 is the beginning of the new year and you will see gyms that are more crowded, junk-food aisles in grocery stores a bit emptier and a rush on books and magazines featuring the latest diet fads. As the month progresses, those gyms will begin to get roomier and those grocery aisles will have less elbow room. That is the nature of making — and breaking — resolutions. Whether you aim to get fit, eat healthier, spend less money or spend more time with friends and family, do not even think about the day, month or year. There can always be a start date. Just do it. Again and again, if necessary. Just do it.

S

ome time in the next few weeks, we’ll wash the penguin, snowflakes, thermometer and signage from our front window here at KTW. The Christmas Cheer posters will come down, as will our decorated tree in the front office. Representatives of four Kamloops charities will be brought together as we share the proceeds of our first Cheer campaign here — and, as of this writing, the total is just a bit more than $46,000, although donations continue to come in. We’re keeping the online portal at our kamloopsthisweek. com website open and the women in the front office here on Dalhousie Drive are delighted to accept additional donations for the next week or so. Dave Eagles will take a photograph when we bring folks from the New Life Mission, Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice House, Y Women’s Emergency Shelter and Sensational Soups program together to present the cheques. Our work on the fundraiser here at KTW will be done until later in 2015 — but the money you have donated will keep that Christmas Cheer spirit alive through the next 12 months as these organizations continue their amazing work in the community. It will see medical equipment added to the hospice. Sensational soups — and sandwiches and desserts — will be served twice a week at Mount Paul United Church, with vol-

LEVEL unteers not needing to dip into their own pockets as often to buy the food. The mission will have some additional funds to keep its many programs running to help the marginalized and needy in Kamloops. And those at the women’s shelter — well, maybe they’ll be able to tick off a few of the items on their wish-list of items. This rookie venture into the fundraiser KTW inherited from the Kamloops Daily News had its hiccups, to be sure. In fact, at one point midway through the campaign, I emailed Gregg Drinnan — the man who brought the idea to Kamloops from Regina — and asked if he ever had a day when he was not exactly in the Christmas Cheer mood. I’m pretty sure he laughed as he read the message, but he replied with encouraging words and memories of glitches he also experienced early in the dozen years he ran it in Kamloops. Going to an online-donation

system brought some challenges, largely because the people at the United Way ThompsonNicola-Cariboo have never dealt with so many donations that come in with a wish to be anonymous or in memory of someone else. The software wasn’t built to allow that, so there were plenty of daily email exchanges between KTW and the United Way as we worked them out. Even then, as recently as last week, there was still another glitch that saw one of the inmemory-of donations not reflected that way in our tally. We’ll have all those issues worked out before next year’s campaign. In the meantime, while the Cheer Fund is coming to an end, the need continues not only for the four chosen charities, but for all social agencies in Kamloops. Christmas tends to be a time when we all think of supporting them, but they need to be remembered all year long. We need to remember we can give more than money to them. The need for volunteers continues and, for many, that just means a few hours once in a while. There are boards looking for people willing to put in a few more hours to work with the staff at these agencies. They’ll thank you for it — and so will the people they serve. dale@kamloopsthisweek.com Twitter: @mdalebass

YOUR OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

LITTLE TOWN THAT COULD OR CITY OF FUTURE? Editor: Re: Bob Iverson’s letter of Dec. 30 (‘Report seems biased against Kinder Morgan’) regarding City of Kamloops environmental-services supervisor Allan Michener’s report to city council” Iverson certainly speaks for me and, I believe, for many others. As Michener “. . . spells out the evils of hundreds of workers coming to our city and

filling up hotels and rentals . . .” I wonder if the city is paying him to maintain Kamloops as the little town that was or if the supervisor’s job might be to develop Kamloops as a vibrant city of the future. It does lie in the preferred climatic zone between the Rocky Mountains and the Coastal Range, well-endowed with natural resources and served directly by the Trans-Canada Highway.

I also wonder if the environmental-services supervisor had any influence in the poor placement of our major facilities, with no consideration given for the needs of a city of this potential. I shall do my best to hold city council accountable — and I encourage others to do the same. Ted Joslin Kamloops

GOOD NEWS — BUT ONLY AFTER MILLIONS WASTED Editor: A good portion of Cache Creek’s landfill’s gases may at long last be converted to usable energy. The electrical energy produced, we’re told in the Nov. 27 edition of the Ashcroft Journal, would be enough to “power 4,800 homes for almost 20 years.” That’s a lot of energy — and for that I am tempted to give a huge pat on the back to Wastech and Cache Creek council and to the provincial government for making that happen. But, for that temptation to be translated into a palpable pat, we need to take a bit of a look at the circumstances. The energy to be converted would power 4,800 homes for roughly 20 years, we’re told. As a conservative estimate, a home uses at least $1,000 worth of electricity (more if heat is included) per year.

So, in dollar terms, over the next 20 years, the Cache Creek Landfill will produce 4,800 X 20 X $1,000 = $96 million worth of energy. That’s a lot. Consider this, though: Cache Creek and Wastech have had the capability of doing this for many years — at the very least for the past 10 years. Yet — out of neglect? out of indifference? out of ministerial inability to act on its own directives? — they did nothing, allowing 4,800 homes’ worth of energy go to waste for 10 years. That’s $48 million literally burned. What’s worse is that during all those years, those unused gases (mainly methane) were allowed to cause an untold amount of pollution to the Ashcroft-Cache Creek air and to the environment as a whole. We’re told, though, those gases were flared, and that

flared methane is less harmful than unflared methane. That may be true, but it is also true that until three years ago, the amount of flared gas was a little over 50 per cent of the gas actually generated by the Cache Creek Landfill, which means the atmospheric pollution was very, very significant. Moreover, even today over 20 per cent of the gas generated by the landfill is not captured, which means that despite the energy conversion, a lot of methane and carbon dioxide continues and will continue to be wasted (to the tune of $19 million, more or less, according to the math used above) and to pollute our environment. This is why, tempted as I am to give Cache Creek and Wastech and the provincial government a big pat on the back, I just can’t do it.

It is also true “that until three

years ago, the amount of flared gas was a little over 50 per cent of the gas actually generated by the Cache Creek Landfill, which means the atmospheric pollution was very, very significant.

LOCAL NEWS

‘Hello, 9-1-1? could you please fix my broken Wi-Fi?’ our centre as a valid emergency, until they determine otherwise,

no matter what the circumstance,” E-Comm spokeswoman Jody Robertson said. “Even if the reason for the call seems absurd on the surface, 9-1-1 call-takers need to take time to determine exactly what’s going on and whether someone genuinely needs help. “Calls about Internet access and cold food are a serious drain on emergency resources.” This year’s top reason not to call 9-1-1? Wi-Fi at a local coffee shop isn’t working. “We’re here to help people with real emergencies,” said E-Comm 9-1-1 call-taker Warner Yang, recipient of this year’s top nuisance call. “If someone calls 9-1-1 about Internet problems, that means I’m not available to help someone who really needs it.” Approximately 2,600 9-1-1 calls per day were placed to E-Comm in 2014. Here are the Top 10 reasons to not call 9-1-1, based on actual calls received last year: 1. Wi-Fi at a local coffee shop isn’t working 2. “What’s the fine for jay walking?” 3. Pizza not fresh; wants a replacement slice 4. “What’s the number for my travel agency?” 5. Caller phoned 9-1-1 to ask for a taxi referral 6. “Is today a stat holiday?” 7. Food they ordered is cold 8. Wants help finding lost glasses 9. Home Internet is not working 10. “What’s the date today?”

Hicketts clan’s ‘surreal’ experience MARTY HASTINGS STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

M

ike and Lee-Gaye Hicketts are drinking it all in, with their son, Joe, representing Canada on the blue line at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Montreal. “It’s a completely surreal moment,” Mike said. “Just the excitement in the city and the further we go, the more exciting it’s going to get. It’s an extremely proud moment.” The Hickettses were touring Old Montreal with the families of other Team Canada players and staff members when they spoke to KTW on Tuesday, Dec. 30. It was freezing outside — “It’s probably frigging minus-40 . . . well, not quite that cold, but it’s cold,” Lee-Gaye said with a laugh. Temperatures were set to rise a day later for mom and dad, who watched from the stands in the Bell Centre as Canada squared off against the U.S. in the tournament’s marquee round-robin matchup, a game played yesterday (Dec. 31) after KTW’s press deadline.

Their younger son, 16-year-old Matt, was also feeling the heat yesterday, refereeing at the Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament. Joe, 18, is no stranger to playing for Canada and his parents are familiar with watching him don the Maple Leaf, but this experience is a little different, a little more special. “I’m just happy to be here and enjoy all this and I’m so proud of my son for being named to the team,” Lee-Gaye said. “Having this experience is pretty surreal. The first game sitting in the stands, it was like, ‘Are we really here?’” Both parents were asked about dealing with the nerves that come with watching their son play on one of hockey’s biggest stages, the hopes of a nation riding on Team Canada’s shoulders. Each of them said they are handling it just fine. “We’ve been through it before,” Mike said. “I don’t know if you’d say it’s a helpless feeling. You have all the confidence in all the boys that they’re going to do it. “[Joe] came over expecting to be in that five, six, seventh defenceman role and he’s happy to do whatever he can to help.” Canada was 3-0 heading into yesterday’s tilt against the Americans. Joe

had one point, an assist in Canada’s 8-0 shelling of Slovakia on Boxing Day. Up until Tuesday, the only goal the Canadians had allowed came when Joe’s defence partner, Samuel Morin, fanned on a clearing attempt and Artturi Lehkonen of Finland made him pay. The rearguard from Kamloops did all he could to cover for his partner’s mistake, but he couldn’t get back in time to prevent the goal. Mike and Lee-Gaye are staying within walking distance of the Bell Centre and are able to spend time with Joe each day. “He’s having the time of his life,” LeeGaye said. “It’s great. The support that we’re getting . . . the Bell Centre is just going crazy. “It’s an exciting time for them and for us.” Lee-Gaye went to Montreal with several goals. Two of them — sit at the TSN desk with James Duthie and Bob McKenzie and visit Old Montreal — have already been accomplished. The third — coming home with gold — will be up to the players. “It’s going pretty good so far,” Mike said. “At the end of the day, we’re going on to the quarter-final and, then, hopefully, on to the semis and gold.”

From the Kamloops Sunrays and the Canadian National Team to the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas and Cirque du Soleil’s O, Cassidy Beaver-Nicol has seen the world through synchronized swimming. And the 26-year-old isn’t finished yet. “Life is entertaining!” Beaver-Nicol told KTW in an email. “Of course, I am always thinking I should start focusing on settling in one location, but I am not quite ready yet. I am very happy with where I am and what I am doing.” Most of the Tournament Capital last heard from Beaver-Nicol when she was still with the Kamloops Sunrays. The Westwold native swam with the local synchronized-swimming team from the age of eight to 19 and enjoyed plenty of competitive success. She twice made the Canadian National ‘B’ Team, swam competitively for the Calgary Aquabelles and did two years with the Canadian National ‘A’ Team in Montreal. The swimmer left the competitive world in 2010, joining the Royal Carribean’s Oasis of the Seas cruise line. Then there was O. One of Cirque du Soleil’s pre-eminent shows, O opened Beaver-Nicol’s eyes to the world of professional performing, back when she was still a competitive synchronized swimmer. She joined

the show in April 2013. Beaver-Nicol stayed with O for about eight months but, before long, found herself longing to again be travelling the world. She performed with Cirque for the last time on Dec. 31, 2013. Now, Beaver-Nicol is back on Oasis of the Seas. She’s the aqua captain of the liner, managing the performers and the shows in the ship’s aqua theatre. “O is beautiful, professional and consistent and I miss it often, but the ship has more excitement for me,” BeaverNicol said. “It is unpredictable, which is fun. “It is nice to meet people from all over and hear what they have to say about the ship and our shows.” She doesn’t make it back to the Kamloops area often but, when she does, BeaverNicol is always happy to be home. She dreams of being a synchronized-swimming coach one day and said the Kamloops Sunrays would be a perfect fit. But, for now, she’s going to keep swimming and performing. What better way to see the world?

Jim Mahoney parted with a tiny piece of U.S. Open history with hopes it could change Phil Mickelson’s luck. It was a broken tee in a plastic bag. “A souvenir that money can’t buy,’’ Mahoney said in a telephone interview from his home in Connecticut. Mahoney brought the tee to the Deutsche Bank Championship, along with a letter explaining the circumstances around it. This was the last tee Mickelson used at Winged Foot in the 2006 U.S. Open. His drive sailed far to the left on the 18th hole, like so many of his tee shots that Sunday,

and caromed off a tent. From there, Lefty made double-bogey and finished one shot behind. The U.S. Open remains the only major keeping him from the career Grand Slam. Winged Foot haunts him more than his other five runner-up finishes. “I was on the tee at Winged Foot, me and a friend of mine,’’ Mahoney said. “Phil got out his driver and was bouncing the ball off the face. Phil looked

over to the 17th green and there’s a scoreboard. It showed that [Colin] Montgomerie had just doublebogeyed the 18th. “His whole demeanour changed. But, he hits this horrendous slice.’’ Thousands of fans who had crowded around the tee box took off down the sides of the fairway. Mahoney and his friend walked across the tee box. “We’re the only ones there. The marshals gave up,’’ he said. “They were the last group to hit. And there’s Phil’s tee.’’ Even after it was over, Mahoney’s said his friends told him he should put the tee on a plaque. Instead, he stored it in a drawer. He wanted

Mickelson to win that day, as did half of New York. He roots for him at every major. And that’s why he thought it might help to give it back. Mahoney approached Mickelson’s caddie during the proam at the Deutsche Bank Championship in September. He simply handed him an envelope that contained the broken tee and the letter. “I will trade the tee for a photo-op,’’ said the letter, addressed to Mickelson and Jim (Bones) MacKay. “You can make peace with it and win the Open in 2015. Good luck.’’ MacKay was looking for Mahoney after the round for the photo. He never found him.

A&E COORDINATOR: JESSICA WALLACE 778-471-7533 or email jessica@kamloopsthisweek.com

Paul Filek, 33, began his music career in Kamloops with help from Henry Small. Now, he’s living in Vancouver, performing regular gigs in pubs and collaborating with producer Jeff Dawson and boy band Eleven Past One.

Filek finding his place in music JESSICA WALLACE STAFF REPORTER jessica@kamloopsthisweek.com

P

aul Filek never expected to be writing music for a boy band. When the 33-year-old from Kamloops headed west for Vancouver back in 2008, he intended to bring his own music to the big city Canadian music scene. He’s been doing a lot of that. His calendar is chalk full of gigs from now to spring. He performs regular shows — often solo cover gigs, sometimes with other musicians — in the Greater Vancouver area at watering holes like Doolins Irish Pub downtown and Dublin Crossing Pub in Surrey. Mix in the odd trip out to Alberta with stops in Kamloops and he gets the chance

where • are • they

NOW? to perform his own music. Between it all, Filek has managed to make music his full-time job — something he couldn’t do in Kamloops, where he bartended to supplement his music. “It’s awesome,” Filek told KTW from Vancouver. “There’s just so much going on here.” With endless pubs and non-stop live music, bands travelling through and loads of producers, musicians and recording studios, Filek called Vancouver “the place to

be” for music in Western Canada. It’s where he met Jeff Dawson, a Vancouver-based producer who is best known for his work with Daniel Powter. Dawson produced Filek’s five-song EP, Paper Planes and Spare Change, which was released in 2012, and they have since been writing songs together. Filek intended to record one of the tracks, Give You All of My Lov’in, himself, but said he “couldn’t get it together in time.”

Instead, Canadian boy band Eleven Past One recorded it and Filek said the song will be the group’s next single. While Filek still wants to perform his own music, it all worked out, he said. He expects the song to get a lot of radio play. “It’s actually cooler that they do it than I would,” he said, noting Eleven Past One has been making headway in the industry. Filek hopes to pursue more of his own music going into the new year but, after his first time writing for other musicians, he’s opening himself up to the new avenue in his music career. There’s no shortage of talent or people pursuing music, especially in Vancouver. “It’s eye-opening and sort of humbling,” he said. “There’s so many people who are so talented. “It’s inspiring, too, because it makes you have to work harder.”

We will be CLOSED from January 1st to 12th, 2015

We look forward to serving you in the New Year!

HOLLYWOOD CLUNKERS FROM FILMS PAST GRANT STOECKER

DRIVEWAY CANADA

S

equels are rarely as good as the first, but give this second round of clunkers from film and television a chance. Each of the following cars was selected based on reader comments.

Uncle Buck, 1975 Mercury Marquis Brougham

We all have that oddball relative — if you can’t think of one, well, it’s probably you. In 1989’s hit comedy, Uncle Buck, John Candy portrays Uncle Buck, an unemployed gambler charged with caring for his wealthy suburbanite brother’s children. While children might find Uncle Buck a bit odd, they find his ’75 Marquis downright revolting — and terrifying if standing anywhere near it when it backfires.

Wayne’s World, 1976 AMC Pacer

Ah, the “Mirth Mobile”! This 1976 Pacer was the ride of choice for public-access cable stars Wayne and Garth in 1992’s cult classic Wayne’s World. While the Mirth Mobile, with its mismatched wheels and flame decals, is sure to make any car lover go “schwing,” the Pacer is often noted for its unique styling, courtesy the famous designer Richard Teague.

Harper, 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster

Who would have ever thought of Paul Newman driving a

Porsche on the big screen? Sarcasm aside, Paul Newman’s eponymous character, Harper, is a wisecracking private investigator tasked with tracking down a kidnapped millionaire in the 1966 film of the same name. Harper’s decrepit Porsche 356 Speedster makes several appearances in the film, including a horrific tumble down a hill (at least for a Porschephile like myself). Fortunately, it was not a true 356A Speedster but a shell with exhaust tips attached.

Columbo, 1959 Peugeot 403 Cabriolet

This popular television series starred Peter Falk as disheveled detective Lieut. Columbo.

The 1976 AMC Pacer (above) from the 1992 cult classic, Wayne’s World, is known in the film as the Mirth Mobile. While Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott lost a 1979 Renault LeCar (below) in Dude, Where’s My Car?

While most cops would opt to drive a service car, Columbo chooses to drive his personal car, a faded Peugeot 403 Cabriolet that often suffers from mechanical problems at inopportune moments. And, just one more thing: The car was personally selected for the show by Falk, after he spotted it in a parking lot at Universal Studios.

Dude, Where’s My Car, 1979 Renault Le Car

In 2000’s so-bad-it’sfunny comedy Dude,

Where’s My Car, Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott wake up from an eventful night only to find they’ve forgotten where they

parked their beat-up Renault Le Car. In an effort to find it, they encounter an unlikely group of UFO cultists, two races of

aliens and a universedestroying Rubik’s Cube. After saving the universe from guaranteed destruction via the

Rubik’s Cube, they discover their car has been hidden behind a doubleparked mail truck the entire time.

LOCAL NEWS

FRASERWAY DRIVING DONATIONS

Fraserway RV’s Kamloops location had $10,000 from head office to donate as the local staff saw fit. The money went to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation ($5,000), Kamloops Hospice Association ($3,000) and the Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops ($2,000). Fraserway GM Bill Powell said the local dealership has taken part in the Operation Christmas Child charity and Fraserway’s head office in Abbotsford decided to help expand altruistic efforts in Kamloops. “They’re a good company,” Powell said. “I’m sure they will continue to give.” ABOVE: Powell was joined by Fraserway’s Debbie Powell in handing $3,000 to Kamloops Hospice Association executive director Wendy Marlow. ò Obituaries & In Memoriams ô RUTH SUMMERS-KAATZ We are saddened to announce the recent passing of our dear mom, Ruth Summers-Kaatz in Kamloops. Ruth died peacefully at the age of 91, in the presence of her loving family. Ruth is survived by her three children, Jerry (Sharon) and Judy Summers and Gay Rudichuk, as well as her two sisters Barbara (Bob) Steele of Barriere and Inez Tingley (USA). As well, Ruth has nine adoring grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins throughout Canada. Ruth was predeceased by her late husband Elmer Kaatz, grand-daughter Natasha Rudichuk, and first husband David Summers. A highly respected Kamloops musician, Ruth enjoyed many years performing as a singer with various church choirs such as that of Mt. Paul United. As well, she became a well-regarded soloist for special occasions, including providing piano and vocal entertainment at the Canadian Inn and other venues around the province. Most recently, Ruth Summers-Kaatz performed in Seniors’ residences with the Golden Serenaders band. Many will also remember her years as the superb pianist with The Nuggets Dance Band. In a recent interview, Ruth exclaimed that “…we had a piano, and as long as I had music, the world was right!” We know that our mom is happily singing in a celestial choir or continuing to play in a wonderful band somewhere. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date this spring. Donations may be made to the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in her name. www.kamloopssymphony.com/ Online condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com Schoenings Funeral Service 250-374-1454

DARREN GARRY

BARR

1968 - 2014 It is with great sadness and heartbreak that we announce the passing of Darren Garry Barr at 7:00 am on December 27, 2014. Born January 1, 1968, Darren was a great father and husband and is survived by his wife Anahi and his daughter Allisson as well as his mother Ardell Barr, stepfather Al Smith, and brothers Dean Barr, Troy Smith and Chris Smith. Darren was born and raised in Kamloops, where he attended Westsyde Secondary. He was always the first person to help anyone in need, and had a huge heart. He moved to Manzanillo Mexico where he met his wife and had his daughter. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Pennies From Heaven Charles L. Mashburn

I found a penny today, Just laying on the ground But it’s not just a penny, This little coin I’ve found. “Found” pennies come from heaven, That’s what my Grandpa told me He said angels toss them down; Oh, how I loved that story. He said when an angel misses you, They toss a penny down Sometimes just to cheer you up, Make a smile out of your frown So don’t pass by that penny, When you’re feeling blue It may be a penny from heaven That an angel tossed to you.
