‘SHE WAS MY ONLY CHILD’ TIM PETRUK
STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
Elwin Wheeler is a broken man. He is sitting on a recliner in the living room of his Brocklehurst home. On the floor beside him is a pile of teardrenched tissues piled almost as high as the chair’s armrest. A month ago, Wheeler and his family were preparing for Christmas. Now he is alone. His 26-year-old daughter, Deanne, was murdered in an apartment at 435 Cherry Ave. on Dec. 30. His wife was hospitalized a short time later.
“She was my only child,” Wheeler told KTW. “I have two stepsons, but they don’t have my name. That was my only child.” Deanne had been living in the family home, Wheeler said. “On Dec. 30, she got off that couch right there,” he said, pointing across the living room. “She had a bit of a cold. She got on the bus at noon and went to Cherry Avenue — and she was dead at 2 o’clock.” Wheeler said the man charged in his daughter’s murder is her ex-boyfriend, noting they had broken up in May. He said he can’t
bear to see the accused’s name in print and KTW agreed not to mention him by name in this story. “Deanne was a beautiful person,” Wheeler said. “She had lots of love in her. She cared about people, she cared about animals. “She was a thoughtful, loving, happy, caring person.” Deanne’s remains were cremated last week. Wheeler said he doesn’t plan on having a funeral because he’s too grief-stricken to plan one. “It just kind of hits me in spurts,” he said through tears, proudly showing off Deanne’s high-school graduation photo.

Elwin Wheeler holds up a photo of his daughter, Deanne, who was murdered in a North Shore apartment on Dec. 30. Below is Deanne celebrating her 18th birthday in 2007.
“There’s so much to do. I have to get rid of all my daughter’s clothes. I’ll probably give them to the women’s shelter.” For now, Wheeler said he’s trying to remember the good times — Deanne’s affinity for candy and yogurt and music, and the one and only catch she reeled in on one of many fatherdaughter fishing trips — instead of focusing on the fact she’s gone. “She liked watching movies,” he said. “Recently, we were
playing crib. She liked a little bit of reading. “She liked her cellphone, like all girls do, talking to her friends. She liked to shop. She liked her clothes. “She always remembered all her friends’ birthdays. She had a lot of love in her.” Wheeler said his life will never be the same without Deanne. “She’ll be forever missed,” he said. “It will never be over.”

55 surgeries being postponed at RIH DALE BASS STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
A shortage of anesthetists is affecting elective surgeries at Royal Inland Hospital— but the situation is not dire. Dr. John Guy, one of about 15 anesthetists in the city, said that number of doctors isn’t sufficient to handle the schedule of surgeries, but added the impact is only being felt “a day here or there.” No emergency surgeries are being affected, he said. Dr. Norm Kienitz, chief of staff at RIH, said the shortage of anesthetists will lead to about 55 patients scheduled for elective surgery this month being impacted. Guy, who moved to Kamloops from the U.S. three years ago, said he believes the problem is Kamloops’ reputation outside the city’s boundaries, with doctors who might relocate viewing
it “more like a small town. From the outside, it doesn’t have the cachet of a Kelowna.” But, Guy said, he believes if doctors would visit the city, they would realize, as he has, it’s an ideal place to live and work. Health Minister Terry Lake pointed to expansion at RIH as being part of the method in attracting doctors. “In the Kamloops versus Kelowna tradition, Kelowna tends to get more headlines and more media attention, but I think that’s changing with the investments being made at Royal Inland Hospital,” Lake said. “That will change the conversation.” Work continues on the new clinical-services building at the hospital and there are longer-term plans to add a surgical tower to the facility. Lake said the “message is getting out there is a lot going on at RIH.” He also pointed to a new contract signed
with the province’s doctors that includes $68 million allocated to enhance access to speciality medical services like anesthesiology or dermatology. “And their organization could make the argument they should have access to that money for better remuneration,” Lake said. Kienitz agreed recruiting to a smaller community like Kamloops can be a challenge. He said the trend is for new doctors to look at large cities first, noting and the Interior Health Authority needs to recruit “to a certain type of person for whom Kamloops is a good fit.” Guy said the Interior Health Authority “is working very hard, beating the bushes to find people” and Royal Inland Hospital is also aware of the situation and doing what it can to find new doctors. In the meantime, locums (fill-in doctors) are being brought in to provide some relief.

Jean-Claude Auger has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic in cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking. A judge will determine his sentence.

Auger: Cocaine wholesaler or reformed ‘chemist’? CAM FORTEMS STAFF REPORTER cam@kamloopsthisweek.com
Lawyers completed a sentencing hearing this week for a Kamloops man portrayed by the Crown as a well-connected cocaine wholesaler and by his defence lawyer as reformed “chemist” who radically changed his life. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Hope Hyslop reserved her decision to a later date on sentencing of Jean-Claude Auger, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic in cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking for his role as a wholesale supplier to a dial-a-dope network operating in Kamloops in 2012. Two other people the Crown alleges were at the top of an alleged drug ring, Richard Crawford and Steven Currie, are expected to go to trial early next year. Five people set to plead guilty for their role as couriers are expected to be sentenced this year. “His role in all of this was as a person who processed the drugs,” defence lawyer Chris Thompson said of Auger. “He was not on the street selling the drugs.” Thompson asked for a sentence ranging from house arrest to one year in jail, along with three years proba-
tion. The Crown wants Auger to serve six years in a federal penitentiary. In late 2012, Kamloops RCMP raided aided Auger’s Kimberley Crescent home on the North Shore, finding $140,000 hidden in a wall, along with more than a kilogram of cocaine, cutting agent and cellphones. After his arrest, Auger underwent extensive counselling that included publishing videos on the Internet of his experiences and reasons for offending. “How do you protect the public?” Thompson told Hyslop. “You change the conduct of the offender. That’s what Mr. Auger has done on his own.” Auger now operates a personal training business and teaches martial arts. Crown prosecutor John Walker noted that unlike some traffickers who escape jail due to unique circumstances, Auger is not an addict. “Mr. Auger’s role was not just assembling the drugs… . Mr. Auger was an arms-length supplier,” Walker said. Walker said Auger’s sole role was to profit by selling cocaine to a dial-adope network.

A support worker accused of shaving an overnight visitor while he slept offered no explanation why police found amounts of short curly body hair in his vacuum. Michael Hume took the stand in B.C. Supreme Court yesterday (Jan. 14) and on Tuesday to deny all allegations against him. Hume is facing one count each of sexual assault, forcible confinement and uttering threats stemming from an alleged incident in Lytton in 2013. The complainant, who cannot be identified due to a court order that protects his identity, testified through tears last week about waking up naked on Aug. 8, 2013, after a drinking session to find Hume, a popular community support worker, shaving off most of his body hair, including around his groin. The complainant said he reluctantly accepted a ride from Hume to his house the night before after drinking at a friend’s house. He otherwise faced
a long walk home. Taking the stand in his own defence, Hume said none of the allegations are true. “Did you shave this man?” defence lawyer Richard Kaiser asked. “Absolutely not,” Hume replied. “Did you threaten this man?” Kaiser asked. “Absolutely not,” Hume responded. “Did you confine him within your home at any time?” Kaiser asked. “Absolutely not,” Hume said. In cross-examination, Hume said he could not offer any explanation why police found amounts of short-cut, coarse and curly hair after dumping his vacuum bag. While two cats were in the home at the time, Hume agreed with Crown prosecutor Chris Balison that it is not animal hair. There is no laboratory evidence to prove the hair is from Hume or that it is even human. In Hume’s version of events, the young complainant threatened to ruin his reputation in the small Fraser Canyon community if he wouldn’t

Under cross-examination from Kaiser earlier this week, the complainant denied attempting to extort Hume. There was also suggestion during
cross-examination by the Crown that the young man himself had been the victim of a blackmailing scheme years before that saw him unwillingly carry out a break and enter to avoid some kind of “shame.” “An alleged situation,” replied Hume, who said he had no direct knowledge of that incident and never counselled the complainant directly. “It was never put down as factual,” Hume said. There was no proof.” The complainant testified Hume once helped him obtain bail in Kamloops court. Earlier in the trial, the chief of the Lytton First Nation testified Hume arrived in the community 10 years ago, working first as a youth and recreational counsellor and later assisting with restorative justice and helping young band members — including the complainant — navigate the legal system. Hume said he earned a degree in human services from University College of the Cariboo (now Thompson Rivers University) in 1985. He was also heavily involved in the B.C. Ambassador program.

MICHAUD REMAINS IN VANCOUVER HOSPITAL TIM PETRUK
STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
The police officer who was shot during a traffic stop in Kamloops last month will remain in a Vancouver hospital for at least a few more weeks. RCMP Cpl. JeanRene Michaud was shot in the early-morning hours of Dec. 3 after
pulling a vehicle over on a Batchelor Heights street. The shooting sparked an intense manhunt that lasted more than 12 hours, eventually leading to the arrest of 36-yearold Ken Knutson. Michaud underwent multiple rounds of surgery at Royal Inland Hospital in the weeks following the shoot-
ing. On Dec. 22, he was airlifted to a Lower Mainland hospital for additional surgeries after his condition took a turn for the worse. Kamloops’ top cop said Michaud, 41, is now back on the mend. “He remains in Vancouver and he is scheduled to remain there for a couple more weeks,” RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller told KTW.
“But, he’s making some progress.” Knutson, a convicted killer with a lengthy criminal history, is facing a raft of serious charges related to the shooting of Michaud — including attempted murder. His next appearance in Kamloops provincial court is scheduled to take place today (Jan. 15).

More health-care workers vaccinated DALE BASS
STAFF REPORTER
dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
More health-care workers in British Coluumbia opted for a flu shot this winter. In 2013, a provincial arbitrator upheld a government policy requiring health-care workers be vaccinated or wear a face mask during flu season. The policy and decision was met with some resistance, including from the B.C. Nurses’ Union, but the health
ministry reports the “uptake rates appear to be high.” In the Interior Health Authority region, 78.6 per cent of health-care workers were vaccinated. The Vancouver Coastal Health Authority had the highest uptake, at 83.2 per cent, while Providence Health Care in Vancouver was the lowest at 66 per cent. On average, 77 per cent of health-care workers have been vaccinated for this flu season.

McGill Road in Sahali and at Pacific Way in Aberdeen. Mayor Peter Milobar said the city has already offered any city property as home for additional monitoring stations. The ministry wants to add to monitoring stations in Kamloops but has yet to find suitable locations.
New collection trucks — for $3.4m City trash will get a new, and pricey, ride to the landfill. Kamloops council has approved a $3.4-million budget to purchase 12 new garbage trucks from Rollins Machinery Ltd., which came out on top of a four-company bidding process. The lifespan of the trucks that load both recycling and trash is only seven years, but public works director Jen Fretz said the city has pushed that limit and the units now require swift replacement. The trucks will be purchased this year and in 2016 and will be funded by existing equipment reserves, Fretz said, meaning there is no impact on taxpayers. The new units will also be capable of carrying food waste for recycling if the city moves to a more refined solid-waste system.
City won’t plow ahead with this idea A downtown resident has asked council to change the way it plows snow. A resident who lives in the 600-block of Battle Street told council city plows should push snow to the centre of the road, rather to the side, where it blocks vehicles. The snow can either be left to melt or be removed by dump trucks, the resident suggested. City public works director Jen Fretz said snow removal from the downtown core costs $18,000 per night, adding downtown roads are not wide enough to allow centre plowing and parking.
Crash victim ID’d A Blind Bay man has been identified as the victim of a fatal snowmobile accident near Sicamous last week. The BC Coroners Service has confirmed that David Mark Yule, 49, was driving a snowmobile on Owlhead Mountain, about 25 kilometres southeast of Sicamous, at about
noon on Jan. 9 when his snowmobile went over a steep cliff. Yule died in the crash. The BC Coroners Service and the RCMP continue to investigate his death. Blind Bay is a small community on Shuswap Lake, between Chase and Salmon Arm.

MORTGAGE MATTERS
LOCAL NEWS
Save your home! Don’t sell your home unless you want to! Bills, household expenses and poorly structured mortgages can wreck havoc on the family finances. If this sounds like you, there are options to explore, and you often don’t have to sell your home unless you want to! Bills and high housing costs can sometimes be addressed by looking at three things:
An expensive snowstorm One of the largest snowfalls in a century has taken a $400,000 chunk from the city’s annual snow-clearing budget. City public works director Jen Fretz said the money was spent between Jan. 4 and Jan. 13. It represents about one-quarter of the city’s annual snow-clearing budget. Regular city wages make up $160,000 of the cost and the rest
is the combination cost of overtime and contracted crews. Fretz said the city bases its snow-clearing budget on a three-year average snowfall, noting the total snow-clearing bill for the year may still come in under budget. The snowstorm on Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 was the most snow to fall in Kamloops during a two-day period since 1927, when 40
centimetres of the white stuff was measured. At the airport, Environment Canada measured 39 centimetres of snow over the two days, an amount that closed schools in the KamloopsThompson district for the first time in decades. Higher elevations in the city received up to 10 centimetres more snow.
City wants funds for $9.7m project CAM FORTEMS
STAFF REPORTER
cam@kamloopsthisweek.com
The city will ask the federal and provincial governments to fund two-thirds of a planned emergency water intake estimated to cost nearly $10 million. Kamloops council has passed a motion to request funding from the Conservative government’s New Building Canada Fund. If successful, the pro-
vincial and federal governments would cover more than $6 million of the $9.7 million cost. The work proposed for an intake at Yates Road in Westsyde has already been approved by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. Coun. Ken Christian recalled the contamination of the North Thompson River in 1993 from ethylene dichloride caused by a train derailment near Avola.
DOWNTOWN TRUCK ROUTE REMOVED Commercial trucks will no longer have the right to travel on a downtown corridor. Kamloops council has passed a resolution backing an administration request to remove the designated corridor along Lorne Street, River Street and 10th Avenue as an official truck route. Large trucks will still be able to travel on the corridor to service local business, but not as a through-route. Marvin Kwiatkowski, the city’s director of development services, said at Tuesday’s (Jan. 13) regular council meeting the route is no longer suitable due to changes made by the city, including the roundabout at Lorne Street and Third Avenue (in front of Interior Savings Centre) and the new intersection at First Avenue beside city hall. Kwiatkowski said the low height of railway overpasses also makes the route unsuitable for large trucks. Both Lansdowne Avenue and Seymour Avenue remain the designated truck routes downtown. The city consulted with the B.C. Trucking Association, which did not oppose the changes. In a report, Kwiatkowski said there have been incidents of trucks hitting fencing and railway overpasses on the route. He said the change will also make the roadway more suitable for cyclists and pedestrians.
That spill on the CN Rail line forced closure of the river for potable-water use for 21 days. “It meant closing the river from Blue River to Rayleigh for 21 days,” Christian said. “Putting that in the South Thompson would create ultimate disaster that no mayor or councillors would survive.” Mayor Peter Milobar said a complete shutdown of water service would cause problems
for sanitary service and potable water. “There’s some things you just can’t do without,” he said. Milobar noted the Building Canada fund is oversubscribed by seven or eight times, meaning there is little certainty the project will be funded. The province automatically contributes its share if projects are funded by the federal government.
1. Amortization For years, many lenders have been advising clients to choose 20 or 25 year amortizations so the client doesn’t have to pay as much interest over the life of the mortgage. Good idea right? Well, the problem is that sometimes the payments are so high that the client ends up putting emergency expenditures, vacations and other expenses on high interest credit cards. The result is that people end up paying off 3%, 4% and 5% mortgage debt and building up 9%, 19% and 29% credit card debt. The high credit card interest can become unbearable and force the sale of your home. 35 year amortizations are still available! Conditions apply 2. Refinancing In some cases, we can use the equity from your house to payoff credit card bills, car loans, etc. This means we pay off high interest debt with low interest debt. We can’t always change how much money you owe, but we can change how much interest you get charged on it. 3. Cashback Would a cashback mortgage work for you? In this type of mortgage, you receive a lumpsum of 2% or 5% at closing which you can use to reduce bills etc. The extra money can reduce overall household monthly payments or can be used to payoff closing costs or mortgage penalty. The mortgage payments are higher for this type of mortgage. If you are struggling with month to month bills or know someone who is, call me BEFORE you miss a payment. Once you have missed payments reported on your credit bureau, lenders are less likely to approve your mortgage change.* Whether you are a first-time homebuyer, up for renewal or refinancing, there are many unique and competitive products available on the market today. TIME FOR ACTION ON MISSING WOMEN
O
n Jan. 4, Roxanne Louie went missing in Penticton. While we hoped she would soon return to her family, it was not to be. Her alleged murder brings intensity and poignancy to the release of a report from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights calling for a national inquiry after it spent two years of studying the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women in B.C. According to the commission’s report, “disappearances and murders of indigenous women in Canada are part of a broader pattern of violence and discrimination against indigenous women in Canada.” Along with calling for a national inquiry, the report calls for the government to address the underlying factors that exacerbate the violence against indigenous women. We needed two years of study to determine this? Year after year of women going missing in Vancouver before Willy Pickton was caught or years of women disappearing or murdered along the Highway of Tears wasn’t enough to get the message across that there is a problem? Aboriginal women are seven times more likely to be murdered than non-aboriginal women. That’s not acceptable, nor are ongoing delays in addressing it. Senior governments have dodged taking steps to deal with the issue of murdered and missing aboriginal women. A national inquiry isn’t going to solve anything though, it is part of a process that should include positive and immediate changes to our police, social and justice systems. Solutions need to be found to this problem now, not five years from now after another inquiry reports back and governments slowly implement recommendations. It’s time now to apply common sense to this systemic crisis and not watch more aboriginal women fall victim while committees create more reports. — Penticton Western News

Here’s what 2015 will bring
I
have been asked numerous times to name the big issues facing council going into 2015, The truthful answer is we don’t know what all of them will be and, as we saw from last week’s snow event, some issues just sneak up on you. Leading contenders will be the 2015 budget, the KGHM Ajax project and the performing-arts centre. The 2015 budget will define how this new council will approach fiscal responsibility over the next four years. We will need to find a balance between industry, business and residential-property owners. We also need to find that balance between user fees and property taxation. What service levels are we comfortable with and what, if any, supplemental or legacy projects are we prepared to support? As it stands today, preliminary numbers look good, but they are exactly that — preliminary. We need to finalize our 2014 expenditures, we need to see what happened to property assessments, we need to find out our gas-tax allocation and we need to calculate inflation on our existing services. It is only then that we will be in a position to make decisions respecting a laundry list of supplementary budget requests and come up with a tax rate all of our stakeholders can live with. Stay tuned. Work on this critical issue started in December and will carry on until April.

View From
CITY HALL It will likely be April when KGHM gets around to releasing some of the extensive work it has undertaken in support of its Ajax project. The environmental-assessment process will kick into high gear and adjudication of KGHM’s work will be the focus of the community and of council. While most of the proposed project is located outside the city boundary, it will be carefully scrutinized by council on behalf of our residents. Groundwater hydrology, air quality, noise, dust, vibration, transportation, employment and taxation are a few of the issues we raised as far back as 2012. In good faith, we owe the company a fair and transparent review of the answers they are providing to questions we have asked. It is very likely that review will require several months to complete and will take us to September. I suspect by then the third major issue of the year will be on our desks — the vision of a
performing-arts centre. While much work is underway, it will take the arts community some time to fully analyze the consultant’s input and be in a position to put a concrete proposal before the citizens of Kamloops. How big is it? Where is it? Does it involve the university or the school district or the regional district? Is the private sector involved? Done right, this could be a facility that defines the future of arts and, therefore, livability in Kamloops. Done wrong, this could be an albatross around the necks of the next generation of taxpayers in our city. It is clear to me that for this to work, the entire arts community must share the vision and be prepared to work in unison to convince residents of the value. This is a partial list of issues at best. That is part of the excitement of serving on city council. Each week there are new problems, new opportunities and new thinking that we, as your agents, get to ponder, review and make decision upon. Do we always get it right? Not likely but, hopefully, with open minds and fulsome discussion, we can be right a majority of the time. Ken Christian is a Kamloops councillor. YOUR OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
BC HYDRO TAKES ISSUE WITH INFO IN KTW STORY Editor: I would like to correct some inaccurate and misleading information that was published in your story last week regarding BC Hydro (‘Kamloops family mulls legal action against BC Hydro,’ Jan. 9). Your story suggested our new meters were involved in a recent electrical incident in Summerland. There is no connection between that incident and BC Hydro, or with smart meters. BC Hydro does not serve Summerland residents. Summerland is served by its own municipal utility and those customers do not have smart meters. BC Hydro has installed 1.9-million new meters over the last three years and they have a proven safety record. Our new smart meters have undergone rigorous quality-assurance testing by both the manufacturer and BC Hydro to ensure they are safe, accurate and reliable.
Further, BC Hydro customers who chose to keep an old meter, but have had their power disconnected for non-payment, do not have to take a smart meter when they are reconnected. They can opt to take a radio-off meter instead of a smart meter, but must pay the applicable fees so costs associated with that option are not passed on to other ratepayers. BC Hydro makes every effort to resolve billing issues and has flexible payment options available for customers who need them. Just like any other service, customers who do not pay their bill — for whatever reason — enter a collections process. Disconnecting a customer’s electricity service is something BC Hydro takes seriously and is always a last resort. The fees charged to customers who elected to have a non-standard BC Hydro meter are fair and have been approved by the BC Utilities Commission.
These fees ensure the cost of maintaining two systems is not passed on to all ratepayers and help recover the additional costs of maintaining resources, equipment and systems that have now been automated by smart meters. For example, non-communicating meters create gaps in the network and BC Hydro has to install additional telecommunications equipment to bridge the gaps so the modern grid can work as planned. Modernizing the electricity grid with smart meters plays a crucial role in BC Hydro’s plan to provide a secure and reliable power system for customers across the province. Once complete, a modernized grid will help BC Hydro improve its management of the electricity system, lower costs, reduce theft, encourage conservation and help detect outages. Greg Alexis BC Hydro
CITY NEEDS TO REVISIT ITS SNOW-FIGHTING STRATEGY Editor: I would like to comment on this recent snowstorm and snow removal in the city. “Terrible” is the word that comes to mind. Now, this is not the fault of the plow operators who worked around the clock. I want to make that clear. I know it’s not profitable for the city to own more plows because snowstorms are rare, but we don’t have to get a snowstorm as big as the last one to have to wait two or three days for a plow up here in Sahali.
It happens at least once every winter, which still doesn’t make it profitable for the city to own more plows. What I am saying and what I don’t understand is why the city does not have one or two private contractors who are on-call when needed once or twice a year. What would happen if we got a bad snowstorm that lasted two weeks? It could happen and we would have a state of emergency, I think city hall has to rethink the services it tries to provide to all taxpayers.
An emergency plan has to be put in place before the emergency happens, not after — and, obviously, the city has no plan. Royal Inland Hospital has plans in place for all different types of emergencies and is forced to do so, but I guess the city is exempt. This is not a major undertaking for the city to have private contractors put on a list to be called for snow removal when needed once or twice a year. I know someone will say the city already does this. Well, if it does, the city obvi-
ously needs more contractors on that list because I see the same thing every winter. Could it be that plowing half the street could mean paying less taxes because there are winters in which the city does not use the whole snow-clearing budget? If so, where does that money go? I’m not trying to put the city down. I’m trying to get city council members to remember why they were elected. David Shaw Kamloops

coercive and intrusive. • Removing the prohibition on the dissemination of phone and Internet hate speech from the Canadian Human Rights Act. • Repealing the Elections Act ban on the publication of election results before polls have closed in certain regions. However, other measures have been much more nuanced: • The recently passed cyberbullying bill, delayed for years amid accusations it infringed on privacy and civil liberties, gave police more online surveillance powers. • Conservative Senate bill S-4, now in the Commons, would loosen certain privacy protections, giving some entities more power to use personal information without consent. • A Conservative private member’s bill made it illegal to wear a mask during a riot or unlawful assembly. • The government barred British MP George Galloway

Galloway later won a challenge at Federal Court and accused the Conservatives of trying to stifle debate. • Conservatives removed two representatives from the Canadian Immigration Forum as witnesses at a committee hearing because of their views on non-white immigration. Harper himself seemed to encapsulate the grey areas of civil liberties debates and his own pragmatic style in 2009, when he spoke to a Manning Centre networking conference. “The libertarian says, ‘Let individuals exercise full freedom and take full responsibility for their actions.’ “The problem with this notion is that people who act irresponsibly in the name of freedom are almost never willing to take responsibility for their
actions,’’ Harper said. The debate around Charlie Hebdo, and whether its provocative cartoons should be republished by media outlets as a statement in favour of free expression, has highlighted the range of views within the Conservative movement. In very general terms, many of the party’s libertarians hail from the West and from the Canadian Alliance and Reform party traditions. Quebec minister Maxime Bernier is a notable exception. Coeur d’Alene In 2006, Harper ministers criticized the republication of a Danish newspaper’s editorial cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. Then-defence minister Gordon O’Connor said he hoped religious groups across the country would know the government did not tolerate ridiculing any faith. Today, some Conservatives have criticized the CBC and
others for refusing to show some Charlie Hebdo cartoons depicting Muhammad. “Takes courage to publish the cartoons. Also right thing to do . . . Sen. Linda Frum tweeted. Ontario Conservative MP Peter Kent takes issue with the suggestion individuals or media outlets are acting cowardly if they don’t publish the cartoons, calling that a simplistic view. The former TV broadcaster said there’s often a vigorous debate on civil liberties within caucus and Harper is conscious of the diversity of viewpoints. “He’s certainly passionate, but I think that he recognizes that across the country, as in our party, there are shades of opinion,’’ Kent said. “I believe we’re unanimous in defending free speech, but we just have differences of opinion on how that defence needs to or doesn’t need to be demonstrated.’’

Latter Day Saints Inc. Blackmore is one of the leaders of Bountiful, whose residents practise a form of fundamental Mormonism that, unlike the mainstream church, still condones multiple marriage. Blackmore consented to a court order that bans him from using any variation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and forbids him from interfer-
ing with the church’s use of the word Mormon. The order also compels Blackmore to change his group’s corporate name to Church of Jesus Christ (Original Doctrine) Inc. Blackmore and James Oler, who became leaders of separate factions within Bountiful when the community split a decade ago, were each charged last year with practising polygamy.

vide related services. The premier made the comments to reporters after meeting in Toronto with bank analysts and U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman. Alberta is dealing with the loss of billions of dollars in revenue following a collapse in oil prices to less than $50 US a bar-
rel from $100 US a barrel in the summer. Oilsands giant Suncor has already announced it is planning to cut about 1,000 jobs. Prentice is promising fundamental change to Alberta’s books, saying it’s time to get day-to-day spending off the rollercoaster of volatile oil revenues.
Baird urged to denounce lashes
OTTAWA — Opposition parties want Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird to publicly denounce the flogging of a Saudi blogger who was lashed 50 times last week after being convicted of insulting Islam. Raif Badawi was sentenced last May to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes after he + 0 0 55 www.kamloops.ca/ezreg + 0 0 55 www.kamloops.ca/ezreg criticized Saudi Arabia’s clerics on a liberal
blog he founded. The first 50 lashes were delivered on Friday, Jan. 9, and Badawi, whose wife and children have since come to Canada, is expected to receive another 50 lashes per week for 19 more weeks. Paul Dewar and Marc Garneau, the foreign affairs critics of the NDP and Liberals,
respectively, say it’s time for Baird to publicly condemn Saudi Arabia, a Canadian ally. They say it’s not enough that Canada’s religious-freedom ambassador and development minister have spoken out. Baird is travelling in Egypt where he is to press for the release of an imprisoned Egyptian-Canadian journalist.

lake Tancock, 27, and Marina Campsall, 23, have just over a year to pursue music together. After that, Campsall will have graduated with an arts degree from Thompson Rivers University and will be off continuing her studies outside of Kamloops — probably at UBC Okanagan — with
the goal of eventually becoming a high school teacher. As for Tancock, he will be well on his way to becoming a lawyer, immersed in his third and final year studying law at TRU. They know they have a limited window of opportunity after a chance meeting through a friend brought them together, so the musical duo — dubbed Arkimedes — is sending its original music to Canadian indie-music labels with the hopes of getting signed.
“We probably have a year to hit the ground,” Tancock said. “We’re going to see how time works.” They’re sending their newly released songs, First and Gone and Free, to Last Gang Records — which has represented the likes of Metric, Death From Above 1979, Mother Mother and MSTRKRFT — Mint Records and Paper Bag Records. The songs are the first for the duo, as will be its performance tonight (Jan. 15) at the Commodore Grand Cafe and Lounge. “It’s nerve-wracking, but it’s exciting,” Campsall said. See DUO FINDS, A12

Campsall can lean on her experience, having been trained in gospel, musical theatre and classical music growing up. ‘I do love my blues’ DALE BASS
STAFF REPORTER
dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
W
hen Sabrina Weeks heard Pauline Kyllonen sing, she knew right away she wanted the Vernon singer for the next Reflections concert. Weeks, lead singer with Swing Cat Bounce, said she was struck by how much Kyllonen sounded like Stevie Nicks — and, since the February Reflections concert is all about Fleetwood Mac, that sound was something she needed. Joining the two on stage on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7 will be Renae Denis, who has been in earlier Reflections concerts, Matt Stanley and Mike Hilliard. Weeks called Denis, who performs with Black Dog Blue, “our superstar. I am a huge fan of hers and will include her in as many shows as I can just because she’s so freaking awesome.” Stanley, who performs with the Decoys, brings a gravelling softness to the show that Weeks called “quite intriguing.” Hilliard, guitarist and second vocal with Swing Cat Bounce, will be performing and will also share hosting duties with Weeks for the Fleetwood Mac shows. Backing them up will be Ed Hilliard on drums, Terry Strudwick on bass and Steve Soucy on keyboards.
We all grew as “artists just by
watching and being part of a show that we performed together. I wanted to bring that excitement back to Kamloops.
”
— Sabrina Weeks
Weeks said her fans chose the theme for the upcoming show. She asked for suggestions at a Swing Cat Bounce CD release party late last year and Fleetwood Mac won by a fair bit, followed by Etta James and Tina Turner. “Oddly, when we handed out ballad forms at the Reflections of CCR show we did in November, Etta James and Tina Turner placed second again, this time beaten out by ZZ Top,” Weeks said. It will be presented on April 17 and April 18. Weeks said the show will cover both the Peter Green era of the band, when it was much more heavily into a bluesy sound, and the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks era, when it was more pop-oriented. “I think that Peter Green is a pretty important part of their development as a band,” Weeks said. “And, it’s blues, after all.
I do love my blues.” Inspiration for the Reflections series comes from Ontario. Weeks has performed at some tribute shows to Etta James, created by Ross Robinson of the Toronto Blues Society. “It was an incredible coming together,” she said. “We all grew as artists just by watching and being part of a show that we performed in together. I wanted to bring that excitement back to Kamloops. The shows are at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel, 339 St. Paul St. Doors open at 7 p.m., with music starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. They can be bought at the venue or online at www.sabrinaweeks.com/buy_tickets_ reflections_of_fleetwood_mac/. VIP seating is available for those who buy eight tickets online.

The City of Kamloops has been in discussion with Ken Olynyk about a new outdoor basketball court that might be endorsed by Kelly Olynyk, Ken’s son, the River City product who plays for the Boston Celtics.
OLYNYK MIGHT LEND NAME TO NEW OUTDOOR BASKETBALL COURT
MARTY HASTINGS

sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
It’s still in the discussion stage, but it appears NBA star Kelly Olynyk might lend his name to a new outdoor basketball court in Kamloops. “It would be a way to encourage participation for boys and girls within the Kamloops community,” said Kelly’s father, Ken, the TRU WolfPack’s athletic director. “When he was in town in the summer or whatever, he would look to go down and be around and on the court, talking to kids
and encouraging fair play and encouraging them to continue to work on their game.” Kelly, a 23-year-old South Kamloops secondary graduate, is averaging 11.2 points a game and shooting over 51 per cent from the field this season with the Boston Celtics. The outdoor-court idea was introduced to Ken by parks and civic facilities manager Jeff Putnam and director of parks, recreation and culture Byron McCorkell, a trio that meets occasionally to discuss athletics in the Tournament Capital. In an interview with KTW, Ken said
no location has been determined, but sites on both the north and south shores have been discussed. He mentioned McArthur Island as a potential building area, should the project move forward. There has been no talk yet of cost, as no plans for the court have been designed. “He [Kelly] would endorse it,” Ken said. “He wouldn’t necessarily pay for it. “Jeff and Byron had mentioned the idea and I mentioned I’m sure Kelly would be more than happy to lend his name to something along that line.”
The first-round NBA draft pick already runs the Olynyk Klynyk, a summer basketball camp in Kamloops. Ken said a court bearing Kelly’s name would recognize his accomplishments and benefit basketball in the Tournament Capital. “It would be something young men and women and kids in our community could look at and aspire to,” Ken said. “It’s still in its initial stages and we need to talk about size, location and how Kelly would be involved.”
Duey Smith will again lace up for the Jean Jackets at the Logan Lake Pond Hockey Classic. He and 10 of his teammates are lucky enough to have significant others who are willing to take care of the home front for a weekend.

They love him. Tomorrow morning, Matt Robinson will leave behind his wife and young daughter, Shae, and drive to Vernon from Revelstoke to fetch Duey, an old pal from the duo’s tenure at the University of Victoria. Their trek to the Logan Lake Pond Hockey Classic, likely filled with offside jokes and the exchanging of uncouth stories, will mark the beginning of Duey’s first weekend away from Greyson and Ryder. On the way, they’ll drop by Kamloops to grab Nathan Evans, whose three-year-old son, Declan, will be staying at home with mom. Meanwhile, Corey McCallum will be loading his truck with skates, sticks, helmets and pucks, his wife and one-year-old daughter, Lena, inside their Aberdeen home, per-

Storm, new goaltender to host 100 Mile House MARTY HASTINGS
STAFF REPORTER
sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
Jacob Mullen’s tenure with the Kamloops Storm began with a pair of wins. The 19-year-old goaltender from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, made 23 saves in a 4-3 victory over the Kelowna Chiefs on Saturday, Jan. 10, and 20 stops in a 4-3 win over the
Castlegar Rebels on Sunday. Both games were
played at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre, where the Storm are set to host the 100 Mile House Wranglers tomorrow (Jan. 16). Game time is 7 p.m. Mullen was acquired in a trade with the Grand Forks Border Bruins on Friday, Jan. 9. “We played against Jake twice this season. In Grand Forks,
he stopped 55 of 58 shots and was fantastic against our team,” Storm general manager Barry Dewar said. “We think Jake can be the goalie to take us through the playoffs.” Bailey De Palma, 17, is the other goaltender on Kamloops’ roster. The Storm shipped 19-year-old netminder Brody Nelson to the Kimberley
Dynamiters on Friday. Kamloops (2410-0-1) sits atop the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Doug Birks Division with 50 points, six points ahead of second-place Sicamous. On Saturday, the Storm will be in Chase to play the Heat. Game time is 7 p.m. at Art Holding Memorial Arena.

Tim O’Donovan, son of CFJC-TV anchor Bill O’Donovan, will exit his place of work with the Kamloops Blazers on Mark Recchi Way and burn westward toward Logan Lake, while his fiancee starts her day teaching at a local elementary school. Mike Derzak, who is also engaged, will head for the pond, along with Ryan Hudson, Sean McGeough and Garrett McDonald, whose girlfriends will not be along for the ride.
These men belong to the Jean Jackets Hockey Club, which will this year enter two teams at the tournament. Attempting to place myself — a childless, partnerless 30-year-old whose only responsibility this weekend will be to make sure I’m still alive on Sunday — in the shoes of the left-at-home women, some caring for infants on their own, would be farcical. Instead, I’ll just say thank you on behalf of our team and the other squads
at the tournament. Thank you for the weekend passes, a few days for us to berate each other and squabble over mean-nothing alternate captaincies, and for the time to do things you would likely never dream of doing on your next girls’ excursion. (Although, for the second time in tourney history, an all-women’s team, the Super Girls, has entered.) Perhaps a break is welcomed and you’re secretly or quite publicly happy to see your man go. Perhaps you’re
not exactly thrilled with his departure. Perhaps you’ll have time to pay us a visit this weekend. Either way, thank you. A tip of the hat to the girlfriends, fiancees, wives and mothers of the Logan Lake Pond Hockey Classic — a little piece of Canadiana that’s good for the soul. Thank you Darcie, Julie, Kali, Kerri, Ali, Sarah, Kelsey and both Nicoles and Ashleys. The boys will be home soon.

Coach Desjardins on Canucks’ season thus far practice at Rogers Arena. “I think we’re probably where I thought,
but I thought it would kind of be reversed. I thought we’d go out a little bit slower and then be trending upwards. “Now, we’ve kind of flattened off again.’’ The Canucks briefly led the NHL standings with a 16-6-1 mark in late November, but are just 7-9-2 since, including back-toback losses to the Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames that closed out a disappointing 2-3-0 homestand. Vancouver (23-153) fell 5-1 to hometown Nashville on Tuesday. “I think we realize how close it is to miss the playoffs,’’ Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa said. “We’ve done a good job of staying in the moment and taking care of the points, especially in the middle half, the dog days of the season. “We make sure we’re up for these games because we know how important the points are.’’ The Canucks are back in action today against hometown Philadelphia. Game time is 4 p.m. “We’ve got real tough games,’’ Desjardins said. “It’s going to be a battle. Every point’s going to be a battle [but] hopefully teams are saying the same things about us.’’ The good news for the Canucks is Vancouver has played much better away from home this season, sporting a 12-7-2 mark with victories in Pittsburgh, Washington and St. Louis. Canucks captain Henrik Sedin couldn’t explain the road success. “I think we try to keep it simple,’’ he said. “It’s not a big difference that way. I don’t know why our home record isn’t as good as on the road. “We’ve gone into some tough buildings and we’ve shown before this year that we can win in those buildings.’’

B
y all accounts 2014 was a huge year for craft beer
BEHIND BABA’S BORSCHT Kamloops This Week is amping up its inner foodie in 2015. The biweekly Cuisine page will look a bit different this year. Each month, we will highlight recipes as they correspond to various cultural holidays. Those recipes will come from foodies in the community — from restaurant chefs and owners to home cooks — along with a brief explanation of the dish and holiday. This series will be paired with KTW reporter Andrea Klassen’s beer column on the Cuisine page every second Thursday. Bon apetit!
Ukraine does not celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25. Instead, it celebrates on Jan. 7, with festivities beginning on Christmas Eve — Jan. 6. Traditional dishes served include kolach (pastry with fruit), kutia (sweet grain pudding), borscht (beet soup), fish, perogies, holubsti (cabbage rolls) with rice or buckwheat, mushrooms, cooked beans, sauerkraut and peas, pampushky (doughnuts) and compote stewed fruit. KTW contacted Zonia Rurka, who is involved with the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League’s bake sale featuring homemade goodies, for recipes.
BORSCHT 1 cup of fresh or dried mushrooms 3 cups of shredded cabbage 1 large onion, chopped ½ cup of tomato juice 3 tbsp. of vegetable oil 3 peppercorns 2 cups of beets, sliced or grated 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 cup of carrots, diced Lemon juice to taste 1 potato, diced ½ tsp. dill, fresh or frozen 8 to 9 cups of water 1 tsp. of fresh parsley Salt and pepper Saute onion in oil until transparent. Add mushrooms. Saute slightly and set aside. Cover beets, carrots, potato, parsley and dill with water and cook until barely tender. Add cabbage and cook until slightly tender. Add onion and mushroom mixture, tomato juice and salt and pepper to taste. Add small amount of lemon juice to make borscht tart. Bring to a boil and serve.

in B.C. According to a December report from the Province, 17 new breweries launched in 2014, enough to put the total number in British Columbia alone at more than 80. And, with more in the works, it looks like the province is on track to crack 100 breweries in 2015. Here at Bad Rider, your faithful reviewer discovered a number of new faves, took her first stabs at hop appreciation, and drank more pumpkin beer than anyone should ever be required to imbibe. For me, a best-of beer isn’t just tasty in the moment. It’s the sort of beer you want to purchase again and again, even as weird and fascinating new releases crowd into the best spots at your local liquor emporium. They’re the beers you text message friends and co-workers to recommend while half cut, or drag everyone you know out to sample first-hand. Not all of them are flashy, but all of them are worth the time.
Best everyday
It’s the sort of thing I’d never even considered reviewing for this blog, but man did Phillip’s Blue Buck ever turn into my craft brew of choice on
ANDREA KLASSEN
Porter was one of my best finds of the year. Jammy, smooth and full of flavour, it’s completely unlike most of the fruit beers I tasted this summer — and one of the small number of brews where the fruit seemed less stunt and more an obvious enhancement.
RIDER

non-review nights. With its pleasantly hoppy, but not overly bitter finish and medium body, it’s a solid choice when you want a beer that can deliver some interest without requiring too much of your attention. I fished a lot of these out of sampler packs during afterwork hangouts and it was my go-to choice for meeting friends for strictly one (OK, maybe two) pints on weeknights.
Best import
I bought six bottles of Goose Island’s Sofie this year, which is more than any other bomber in my life, probably. Bright yellow, bubbly, a bit fruity and a little sweet, it works well with veggie-heavy cuisine (more important than usual when the reviewer is vegetarian) and the champagne-style bottle is great for presentation.
Best fruit
While I’ll always love Whistler Grapefruit, Cannery Brewing’s Blackberry
I need to buy more of Lighthouse Brewing’s Seaport Vanilla Stout. The beer — smooth, packed with pure vanilla bean, but not too sweet — is like the best beer milkshake without the heaviness (or lactose) of dairy. It’s been on my mind constantly since I reviewed it.
Best local
Red Collar Brewing’s Trippel, a lightcoloured, but syrupy, nine per center, taught me and many of my co-workers a valuable lesson about the value of pacing oneself and knowing the alcohol content of your drink before you swig. I don’t actually think it’s my favourite Red Collar beer — that may be the Doppelbock going on tap in February, or the Mild, which I haven’t yet imbibed enough times to call with certainty — but it’s a brew I’ve gone back for multiple times and with which I’ve had a few interesting evenings out as a result. And what more can you ask, really?

RUTH SUMMERS-KAATZ
October 31, 1923 - December 26, 2014 We are saddened to announce the recent passing of our dear mom, Ruth Summers-Kaatz in Kamloops. Ruth died peacefully at the age of 91, in the presence of her loving family. Ruth is survived by her three children, Jerry (Sharon) and Judy Summers and Gay Rudichuk, as well as her two sisters Barbara (Bob) Steele of Barriere and Inez Tingley (USA). As well, Ruth has nine adoring grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins throughout Canada. Ruth was predeceased by her late husband Elmer Kaatz, grand-daughter Natasha Rudichuk, and first husband David Summers. A highly respected Kamloops musician, Ruth enjoyed many years performing as a singer with various church choirs such as that of Mt. Paul United. As well, she became a well-regarded soloist for special occasions, including providing piano and vocal entertainment at the Canadian Inn and other venues around the province. Most recently, Ruth Summers-Kaatz performed in Seniors’ residences with the Golden Serenaders band. Many will also remember her years as the superb pianist with The Nuggets Dance Band. In a recent interview, Ruth exclaimed that “…we had a piano, and as long as I had music, the world was right!” We know that our mom is happily singing in a celestial choir or continuing to play in a wonderful band somewhere. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date this spring. Donations may be made to the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in her name. www.kamloopssymphony.com/ Online condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com Schoenings Funeral Service 250-374-1454

ò Obituaries & In Memoriam ô BERTA “INGE” ALLGAIER 1928 - 2015
Following complications from a stroke, Inge peacefully slipped away January 10 , 2015 after a full, productive and wonderful life. Born in Ravensburg, Germany, she came to Canada in 1955 to join husband Eugene “Gene” who had arrived the previous year to work and set up a home in Kamloops for his wife and first son, Gerald. Gene worked at Valley Dairy, the Sawmill and finally as a carpenter for McGregor Construction while Mom tended the home front, bearing two more sons Ralph and then Roy. On weekends Gene built his first house basically by himself, on Fairview Avenue and moved his family in. Mom planted and tended the garden, cooked all the meals, read to the children at night and made friends with all the neighbours. When Gene made the decision to start his own company, Inge easily learned bookkeeping, business management and excellent customer relations skills. In the mid-sixties Gene joined the Canadian House Builders Association to discuss common concerns, upgrade their education and promote professional standards. Inge was the Secretary-Treasurer for many years. She was unanimously voted Lifetime Member by the Association. Between keeping a sharp eye on family and Association finances, Inge’s pragmatic and loving touch with gardening became a local force when she joined the Kamloops Garden Club. After winning numerous prizes for flowers and vegetables she became a provincial garden judge. Her love of Kamloops and area didn’t mean she was unaware of the rest of the world. She loved to travel; South America twice, Asia a couple of times and Europe every few years. In the gambling halls of Las Vegas, Reno and lately Washington State, she was a careful and cunning blackjack player who invariably came home with more money than when she left. She experienced health issues in the past ten years but that didn’t keep her from entertaining and cooking superlative food for family and friends at home and at the Shuswap lakeside cabin. She doted on her two grandchildren, Kevin and Claire; kept the large garden up until recently while staying in constant touch with her many friends. Vicky and Rudolf Recklau were friends for over 50 years and shared many life’s experiences with our family. A special bond developed between her, Marie and Felix Fuchs who were in her heart part of her family. They had many trips and adventures together with much laughter shared between them. At her request, there will be no service but she did want one thing from all those who knew her. Please, in the spring, plant a tree in the memory of a fine Lady, a loving Mother, Grandmother and an excellent wife.

JOSEPH HENRY DESJARDINE December 19, 1927 - January 9, 2015
It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of our Dad, Grandfather and Great Grandfather Joseph, on January 9, 2015. Dad was born in Edmonton, Alberta to Joseph and Laura Desjardine. He spent his youth there before moving to Kamloops. Here he spent his teen years going to school, playing baseball and basketball and courting his high school sweetheart. Dad hired on with the CN Railway in 1946 and was employed there until he lost his eye sight in his early twenty’s. In 1949 he married Elizabeth (Beth) Freathy and they started raising their family. In 1954 Dad and Mom bought property in Westsyde where they built a family home and operated a poultry farm raising chickens and selling eggs door to door. During their years in Westsyde, along with raising their four children, Dad became a founding member of the Westsyde Trail Riders and the Westsyde Volunteer Fire Department. For many years he was an active member of the Westsyde Rate Payers Association. Later Dad and Mom moved into Kamloops. Dad worked in the kiosk at the Seymour Street liquor store until his retirement in 1993. After retirement, Dad and Mom travelled throughout Europe and the USA with family and friends. When they were not travelling, Dad could often be seen walking in the city with his close friend Marv Crawford. That was an outing that Dad looked forward to every day. Joe was predeceased by his Mother and Dad, his brothers Marshal and Frank and in 2006 by his loving wife Beth. He is survived by his two sons Ken (Randine), Gary (Verna), and his two daughters Joanne (Bryan) Kersey and Donna (Cliff) Houchen as well as nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Dr. Yanko and Dr. Wynn as well as the care staff at The Hamlets of Westsyde for looking after our Dad. A gathering of family and friends for a Celebration of Joe’s Life will take place at Schoening’s Funeral Chapel, 513 Seymour Street, Kamloops, B.C. on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, Dad asked that donations in his memory be made to the CNIB in Kamloops or the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. Schoenings Funeral Service 250-374-1454

DERRICK MOFFAT It is with deepest regret and immense sorrow that we announce the passing of Derrick Roland Stephen Moffat on the morning of December 1st, 2014, after a brief and valiant struggle with a re-occurrence of esophageal cancer. Derrick is greatly missed by his loving wife Donna, his mother Annie Moffat, mother –in-law Martha Davidson, and his sisters and brothers, Valerie and Jeffrey Moffat, Terry, Cathy and Tammy Davidson and Mike and Susan Parks. He also left behind an army of family, friends, students and co-workers who miss him daily and mourn his loss keenly. Derrick (Tiny) was an imposing figure at 6’8” tall, who could appear intimidating. However, his appearance belied a caring and gentle heart. Funny, filled with imagination and generous of spirit Derrick was a loving husband, loyal friend and dedicated teacher. His chosen profession and true passion was cooking and he dedicated his life to the preparation and sharing of food with family, friends and customers. He graduated from high school in Chase, B.C. and at the age of 17 enrolled immediately at VCC to pursue his education and apprenticeship in Vancouver, B.C. He worked in Vancouver in several establishments, including Someplace Else Restaurant, The Queen Elizabeth Theatre Restaurant, Horizon’s on Burnaby Mountain, The University Club and the prestigious Vancouver Club. In 1999 he left Vancouver to take a position in the Culinary Arts Program at the University College of the Cariboo, now Thompson Rivers University. A skilled chef and consultant, Derricks career included many highlights, cooking for Prime Ministers, Heads of State and top CEOs, but catering weddings for friends, providing sumptuous feasts for festive family occasions, taking students on field trips to compete in various events, to Whitehorse to cook for the BC and Yukon Winter Games or to Whistler to cook for the Olympics were his favorite moments, because he could truly share his love of food and his passion for all things culinary in a very real and intimate way. As anyone who knew Derrick knows, good food, good music and good stories were the reward for a job well done … and so, to honour a life well lived, we will gather at his most recent workplace, the Culinary Arts building on the campus of Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. for a Celebration of Life ceremony followed by what may prove to be the largest kitchen party ever. At that time we will announce the creation of an award in his name for students enrolled in the Culinary program, a tangible reminder of his dedication to his students and his commitment to his profession. Should you wish to make a contribution to this fund, in lieu of flowers, you may send a donation to the Thompson Rivers Foundation, (either by cheque or online) clearly marked the “Derrrick Moffat Coeur d’Or Culinary Arts Award”, alternately, you may also bring your donations to the life Celebration in January. Please ensure all donations include your name and contact information. Memorials and other information can be found by searching on the Schoening’s website: www.schoeningfuneralservice. com or on Facebook at DC Moffat. I look forward to seeing many of his friends and colleagues there and in the meantime, on behalf of myself, his mum and his brothers and sisters, thank you for your expressions of sorrow and support, and your continued offers of assistance. We all appreciate them more that words can express. In shared sorrow and loss, Schoenings Funeral Service Donna Moffat 250-374-1454

August 3, 1917 - January 11, 2015
Marie Brinkac passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the age of 97 after a long life of service to family and community. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1997. Marie is survived by her 4 children; Annie (Pat) Benson of Kamloops; Georgina (Ken) Stearns of Burns Lake; Mary (Darrell) Wick of Victoria; son John Jr. (Brenda) of Terrace; 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Surviving also are numerous relatives in Czechoslovakia and New York, USA. Marie was born August 3, 1917 in Seredne, Czechoslovakia, the 3rd child of 8 children born to Michael and Julia Cuchta. Marie and John were married in Seredne February 28, 1935 then moved to Canada to begin their married life in Prince Rupert where John was employed by the CNR. They were transferred to Skeena and Barrett and then on to Smithers in 1951 so the children could attend high school. Mom and Dad lived in Smithers until 1992. There they enjoyed a busy life with a growing family. Church was an important part of life and mom was very active in CWL and Hospital Auxiliary. Their home was always open to friends and neighbours as well as taking in a border from time to time. Their greatest joy was family gatherings at which mom excelled in preparing delicious meals with breads, pastries, cabbage rolls and perogies of which none of us could match. Mom always had a very productive garden and dad kept a beautiful yard surrounded by a perfectly trimmed hedge. As grandchildren came along, no matter where they lived, mom was always right there to help and babysit whenever needed. Mom became affectionately known as Nana by family and all who knew her. They traveled to visit relatives in New York and family in Czechoslovakia. Upon retirement they enjoyed bus tours around B.C. and Alberta and as far as Florida. They also traveled with family to Arizona and Hawaii. Mom and dad enjoyed bowling with the seniors and almost every Saturday night was ‘card night’ at their home. The game of choice was canasta. There was hardly a day when friends didn’t drop in for tea and enjoy the fresh cinnamon buns or other baked goodies. If mom wasn’t busy in the community she did a lot of sewing for the family, beautiful needle work, knitting and crocheting. They moved to Kamloops in 1992 where they could enjoy the warm climate and all the amenities the city had to offer. Here mom got into playing crib several times a week and made many new friends. As mom’s health began to fail she moved into Kamloops Senior’s Village. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all her care givers at KSV for their wonderful care and support. Prayers will be recited in Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends wish, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Cathedral or Royal Inland Hospital. THOMAS EDWIN PEDERSEN
November 26, 1928 - December 3, 2014 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Edwin Pedersen, who just turned 86 years old. Over the past year Tom has bravely faced many health issues which required major surgery, but he always managed to bounce right back and continued to live a positive life. This time his determination could not help him. Thomas was predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth in September of 2008, whom he dearly missed. They had been married for 57 years. He is also predeceased by his father and mother, Arthur and Leeilla Pedersen. Tom is survived by his brother Donald (Peggy) Pedersen of Toledo, Ohio, eldest son Tommy (Sherri) Pedersen of Cool, California, son Terry Pedersen of Burnaby, B.C., and daughter Heidi (Dave) Zawislak of Kamloops, B.C. Tom was born in Oakland, California and joined the United States Navy soon after finishing school. During that time, he became pen-pals with his future wife Elizabeth from Kelowna, B.C. After meeting Mom in person and spending time together, they fell in love and married in Kelowna. They moved to Dublin, California where they raised their three children. In California, Tom worked at Kellogg’s and then for the Lawrence Radiation Lab. After coming to Kamloops for a family reunion, they decided it would be a good idea to move back to Canada so Elizabeth could be close to her family after missing them for so many years. When the family moved to Kamloops, Tom got a job at the Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill and worked for over 20 years in the yard crew. He enjoyed the many friendships he made with all the great guys he worked beside who nicknamed him, “Yankee.” He had some health problems in his last year but never lost his quick wit and sense of humour. Dad enjoyed making people laugh. Even at 85 years old he always gave a “wink” to a kind nurse. When he would get mischievous he would say, “Who me, good ol’ lovable Tom? I wouldn’t do that!” and then flash his charming smile. He enjoyed socializing everywhere he went and making new friends. He could share with you a lot of knowledge and information about many topics because he read a lot. Also, there wasn’t a Louis L’Amour book that he hadn’t read. Tom enjoyed gardening and fishing in his younger days and always loved watching a good John Wayne movie or boxing match on T.V. The family will celebrate Tom’s life after the winter, in the spring of 2015. YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE You’re at peace now with Mom, Grandma & Grandpa, cousin Smitty and Dot and Dave’s mom Chrissie, having a good old time together again. You’ll forever be in our hearts and missed always! The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Rod Densmore for all his support throughout the years; he was not only Tom’s trusted doctor but also his friend, to Dr. Azad, also Tom’s snow angel on Dominion Street, and to Kamloops Funeral Home.

Pennies From Heaven I found a penny today Just lying on the ground But it’s not just a penny this little coin I’ve found. “Found” pennies come from heaven That’s what my Grandpa told me He said angels toss them down Oh, how I loved that story . He said when an angel misses you They toss a penny down Sometimes just to cheer you up Make a smile out of your frown So don’t pass by that penny when you’re feeling blue It may be a penny from heaven That an angels tossed to you.

DRIVE WAY
Technologies vie for top safety award DRIVEWAY CANADA
Three technologies are competing for the 2015 AJAC Best New Auto Safety Technology Award, which will be announced at the Montreal Auto Show this month.
GM — Super Cruise
Super Cruise is the working name that GM has given a yet-to-bereleased automated driving technology that will (or can) allow hands-off-the-wheel lane following, braking and speed control, in certain highway driving situations. The goal of this technology is to increase the comfort of an attentive driver on freeways, both in bumper-to-bumper traffic and on long roadtrips. The claimed safety value of Super Cruise is that it could mitigate many traffic collisions and improve traffic congestion. The system sends and receives basic safety information such as location, speed and direction of travel between vehicles that are approaching each other. It will warn drivers and can supplement active safety features, such as forward-collision warning, already available on many production cars. Super Cruise will also add a new lanecentering technology that relies on forwardlooking cameras and other sensors to detect markings, curves and other road characteristics. It will also use a
series of alerts to communicate with the driver based on human factor research conducted on test tracks. A simulator is also being used to measure driver eye-glance behaviour and control interactions in computer-generated automated-driving situations. A combination of radar, ultrasonic sensors, cameras and GPS map data are used by Super Cruise to provide 360 degrees of crashrisk detection bubble around the vehicle and enhanced driver assist features. Super Cruise is still undergoing real-world driving assessments and is expected to make its way into Cadillac production models in 2017.
Honda/Acura — AcuraWatch
A system that takes vehicle operation to the brink of automation, AcuraWatch is a suite of driverassist technologies that’s offered in the Technology and Elite editions of the new Acura TLX. An interesting new tech included in this package is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (LSF). Unlike other systems of this ilk, it uses both grille-mounted (millimeter-wave) radar and a windshield-mounted camera to monitor and maintain a preset vehicle speed and following distance interval to the vehicle directly ahead. The Low-Speed

Follow feature is designed primarily for use in stop and go traffic. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, the TLX will also come to a stop. If the vehicle ahead then moves within three seconds, the TLX will automatically resume Low-Speed Follow mode. GM — 10th Generation OnStar
A 10th generation of GM’s OnStar telematics system with 4G LTE has been rolled out in most of its 2015 model year vehicles. It basically turns the vehicle into a WiFi hotspot that allows occupants to connect up to seven personal devices (smartphones, laptops, tablets etc.) and have them work just like they
do at home. The 4GLTE feature also enhances OnStar’s array of safety and security services and provides a more personal experience as the OnStar agent can stay on the line as they manage the vehicle data interface. A new addition is remote diagnostic, which provides a customer with a monthly health status on their vehicle and it can also assist with arranging a maintenance
appointment. A clever smartphone app, called OnStar RemoteLink Key Fob Services, allows an owner to lock or unlock doors, activate the horn and light, and remotely start a properly-equipped vehicle. It’s included free for five years. OnStar is standard in all 2015 GM vehicles and advisors currently respond to approximately 185,000 calls every day.
