2017 Kamloops Vacation Guide
For those looking to explore the cultural side of Kamloops, the city boasts a breadth of experiences to be had. Kamloops has a rich cultural heritage that ranges from art to theatre to First Nations history. Here is a look at some of what the city has to offer:
Work & Play
Kamloops Symphony Orchestra Some say there is nothing like experiencing live orchestral music — and Kamloops can provide that experience. From September to May, the KSO offers live music by composers from around the world and in a range of styles. Performances are held at the 710-seat Sagebrush Theatre, 1300 Ninth Ave., and the Pavilion Theatre, 1025 Lorne St. For a schedule of upcoming events, go online to kamloopssymphony.com.
Kamloops Museum and Archives
Kamloops Art Gallery The Kamloops Art Gallery is located in downtown Kamloops and boasts the largest permanent art collection in the Interior, with more than 1,700 pieces. It also features a gallery store, hosts special events and offers programs for children and adults who want to explore their artistic side. Location: Victoria Street and Fifth Avenue. Cover Photos: Adam Colborne (Top) | Laura Doan (Bottom)
With three floors of permanent and changing exhibits, visitors can discover the history of this Wild West town. Exhibits here include: The local Secwepemc nation, early fur traders, the Gold Rush and gold seekers, cattle ranchers, paddlewheelers and railway construction, the coming of permanent settlers and the making of a frontier town. The museum also provides walking tours, revealing the history of the River City. Also featured is the Children’s Museum, the first of its kind in B.C. The Kamloops Museum and Archives is located at the corner of Second Avenue and Seymour Street in the bright gold building. It is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Kamloops Firehall Museum The City of Kamloops Fire Rescue service has created a museum that showcases the 118-year history of firefighting in Kamloops. It is located at 1205 Summit Dr. (at the corner of Arrowstone Drive).
TRU Horticulture Garden Walking Tour TRU Friends of the Garden Society offers free walking tours of the university’s beautiful horticulture gardens, describing various gardening techniques and their relevance to local climatic conditions. Tours run Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. from May to August. Special tours are available on request. Call 250-828-5426 for more information. Location: Behind House 10 on the TRU campus.
Secwepemc Museum & Heritage Park In order to experience the cultural history of the First Nations people of this area, a visit to the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park is in order. The museum exhibits incorporate the oral history and legends of the Secwepemc people, along with historical photographs, illustrations and artifacts. Also on display are birch canoes, summer mat lodge and exhibits on hunting, fishing, clothing, games, food gathering and cooking. Heritage Park is located on the banks of the South Thompson River on a 12-acre property and is a complement to the museum. A one-kilometre stretch of trail leads visitors through the remains of a 2,000-year-old Shuswap winter village site, four reconstructed winter pit houses and a summer village. The village features a tule mat lodge, hunting lean-to, fish drying rack, fish trap, smoke house and traditional plant foods. Location: 311-355 Yellowhead Hwy.

The Ethnobotanical Gardens The Secwepemc Ethnobotanical Gardens are located in Heritage Park and are divided into five zones, each representing a different ecosystem found within the Secwepemc territory. Interpretive signs located at each garden describe the ecosystem in which the plants grow naturally. Location: 311-355 Yellowhead Hwy.
Music to Your Ears Canada Day marks the first big celebration of summer in Riverside Park — and it also signals the beginning of Music in the Park. The annual summer event that is the brainchild of Henry Small sees a different performer or
band on the Rotary Bandshell stage in the park every night through July and August. On the other side of the river, there’s a smaller version, with music in McDonald Park every Friday night. Most shows will begin at 7 p.m. It seems like such an easy thing — book a musician, make sure he or she shows up and performs — but it’s something Small spends months putting together. Music lovers benefit as he brings in groups from around the world, as well as spotlighting local and provincial talent. The complete lineup will soon be posted on the city’s website at kamloops.ca/events/calendar.php

Music, theatre, gocarts and mountain biking — those are just some of the things to do at Sun Peaks after the snow has melted. The mountain resort just 45 minutes from the Tournament Capital boasts a free summer concert series, an extensive trail system and North America’s first and only mountain cross go-cart course.
Here is just a sampling of some activities and events to take in this summer on the hill: 5K Foam Fest returns on June 17, a soapy extravaganza in the sun that sees walkers and runners take part in a five-kilometre challenge and festival that includes a bouncy castle, inflatable obstacle course, kid’s zone and more.

Now in its 25th year, the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival is the largest and most musically diverse festival in the B.C. Interior. The festival began in 1992 as a small indoor festival, the result of the grassroots Shuswap Coffee House collective of the 1970s and 1980s, which by 1991 had coalesced into the not-for-profit Salmon Arm Folk Music Society. The main goals of the society are to encourage and promote performers from all parts of the world (with a special emphasis on Canadian talent) and to introduce audiences to the world’s incredibly diverse genres of music, musical instruments and the artists who play them. The festival takes place on the third weekend of every August at the fairgrounds in the heart of Salmon Arm, about an hour east of Kamloops Set beneath the panoramic splendour of Mt. Ida and the Fly Hills with lovely Shuswap Lake

nearby, Roots and Blues is known as a diverse multi-genre festival. At night, two stages run concurrently. Main Stage is at one end of the grounds and is where you can catch the headlining acts. The dynamic Boogie Barn Stage lies at the other end, pumping out live beats for the dancers in the crowd. The festival is a sonic and visual sampler serving up an unforgettable experience. This year, the festival runs from Aug. 17 to Aug. 20 and include acts such as Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Alex Cuba, Five Alarm Funk, Talking Dreads, John Primer and The Lil’ Smokies. Roots & Blues is family friendly, with a Family Fun Zone offering loads of things for kids to see and do, including a Family Stage with a line-up geared towards children. Kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge. For more information, go online to rootsandblues.ca.

Learn local historical ties to the infamous bandit Billy Miner, whose quote led to the name of Monte Creek Ranch Winery’s “Hands Up” red and white. Sip on a glass from Kamloops’ burgeoning wine trail or stroll down the road to the Brownstone Restaurant, a building more than a century old that once housed a bank employing famed poet Robert Service, who wrote the Cremation of Sam McGee. The scenarios are just some featured throughout new downtown historical walking tours.
“What we’re really hoping to do is show off Kamloops,” said Andrew Cooper, Chimera Theatre’s artistic director. Tourism Kamloops sparked the collaboration between Chimera and ACT Adventures, hoping to liven up downtown on evenings during summer months, showcasing the scenery, parks and local offerings during a time when the city gets its largest influx of visitors thanks to the likes of Rocky Mountaineer. “We kind of started the conversation and these two amazing organizations put together these
walking tours and created a visitor and local experience that we didn’t have down there,” said Beverley DeSantis, CEO of Tourism Kamloops. Small plates and local beer and wine samplings are also provided by the likes of Frenchies Poutinerie and Red Collar Brewing Co. The self-guided Picnic in the Park is a simpler option, providing a blanket and basket filled with “local flavours” from ACT Adventures headquarters in the old Fireside Lounge restaurant in the Plaza Hotel at Victoria Street and Fourth Avenue. ACT Adventures operates in Kamloops and Vancouver. Typically guiding hikes, this is the first time it has provided downtown tours. To book a tour, go online to actadventures.ca/kamloops. Times will be flexible to accommodate early and late trains. Those with theatre or tourism backgrounds can find tour guide employment details on Chimera’s website at chimeratheatre.com.

The Shuswap spirit may also be discovered in its outstanding wineries.
The region’s cool climate wines are produced by six wineries that can compete on par with Canadian
and International wines. The area’s wines include outstanding Gewürztraminers, Merlots, Ortegas, Reislings, and Siegerrebes, just to name a few, which have all won national awards. These wineries are all family run businesses that produce distinctive cool climate wines. A tour of the wineries is a must, you’ll be tastefully surprised! Celista Estate Winery Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from May to the end of October. Wines - three reds and three whites, desert wine and our special fortified wine “Portentous.” All wines are award winners including the double-gold champion “Inspired Madness.” Tours Wednesday and Saturday at 11 a.m. Individual tours for parties of eight or more adults available with prior notice. Enjoy a glass of wine with Belgian chocolates, fresh bread, gourmet cheeses, specialty crackers on our patio overlooking Shuswap Lake. Recline Ridge Vineyards and Winery In the heart of the Tappen Valley, and owned by Graydon and Maureen Ratzlaff, this Shuswap winery specializes in cool-climate wines, with aromatic whites, full-bodied reds, and dessert wines. Enjoy wine tasting in the uniquely designed Wine Shop at the new Tasting Bar. Drink in the awesome views, and relax in our licensed picnic area. Larch Hills Winery is a land-based, family run vineyard and winery, owned by Jack and Hazel Manser. The entire product is proudly made from 100% British Columbia grapes. Our wines are made and bottled on our premises at Salmon Arm. We specialize in cool climate grape growing, and have varieties that are generally not available in other parts of BC. We think this makes our wines unique. OVINO vineyards and winery is perched on a bench well above the valley bottom in the Salmon Valley area of the Shuswap region. This small family run operation focuses on producing quality grapes in a sustainable way that they guide into reasonably priced award winning, unique, aromatic wines. Stop by and sample the wines at the wine shop, open from May long weekend daily until Thanksgiving weekend, 11-5. Marionette Winery Come to Marionette and be inspired. Our artisanal wines are crafted to match the beauty and uniqueness of the Shuswap. Marionette winery is the first winery built within the city limits of Salmon Arm. It’s only a couple of minutes away from downtown and just off the Trans Canada highway between Salmon Arm and Sicamous. Marionette sits on a gorgeous south facing slope with a panoramic view of Mt. Ida and the southern skies. The vision of Marionette winemakers Jamie Smith and Amanda Eastwood is to create wines that embody the tradition and elegance of old world winemaking which also reflect the outstanding terroirs of British Columbia. Jamie and Amanda both have university degrees in winemaking and learned their craft in the Loire Valley in France and the Alentejo region of Portugal. The Marionette name comes from a theatre troupe that once resided on the Marionette property. They traveled throughout the interior of BC performing live theatre with their own handcrafted marionettes.

While taking in a theatre production indoors at Sagebrush Theatre is a local arts and cultural pastime, it’s nice to take in a show outside when the mercury begins to rise. The area boasts multiple opportunities to take a seat in an audience under blue skies this summer. The Riverside Players are great for families, moving from park to park throughout the week and on weekends. Hosted by the Kamloops Arts Council, the three-person traveling theatre crew allows Thompson Rivers University students the opportunity to get experience — the students write, direct, act and market the productions — while providing a laugh or two for kids. For more information, go online to kamloopsarts.ca/ programs/festivals/rivertown-players. Don’t forget to mark July 10 on the calendar. That’s the day X
Fest returns to Prince Charles Park for its annual outdoor festival. This year’s productions are the Jungle Book and Rapunzel. It runs through July 29. For a complete schedule and ticket info, go online to projectxtheatre.ca. Finally, head up to Sun Peaks for a medieval experience unlike any outdoor theatre experience in the area. Chimera Theatre will host Knights of the Sun on weekends through Aug. 20, which features a sword-fighting tournament filled with song, dance, romance and combat. It runs Fridays and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 for those ages 13 and older and $20 for seniors and kids. For more information, go online to chimeratheatre.com.

Gem of the Shuswap
The Adams River Nestled in the trees between Adams and Shuswap Lakes lies this pristine river which is fully protected within the boundaries of Roderick-Haig Brown Provincial Park.
SAFETY MART
Haig-Brown, an avid fisherman and conservationist, had the foresight to protect this valuable but fragile resource. The Pacific Sockeye Salmon industry depends heavily on the Adams River, as it has the largest Sockeye spawning population in the world. Heavy use of the river for transporting logs was decimating the salmon stocks. Thanks to conservation efforts the Sockeye return every fall to spawn; most prevalent every four years when the river teems with over 2 million red coloured fish. The Adams River is also a wonderful playground for whitewater enthusiasts. Keep in mind though, that while the many sweepers and logjams are ideal for spawning beds, they pose a dangerous hazard to the inexperienced. The class II and III rapids offer great fun for kayakers and rafters. In summer the water is warm and inviting. The nozzle like “Gorge” is always a rush! For family adventure don’t miss an Adams River raft trip. Looking for more excitement? Adams River Rafting, Canada’s original cataraft company, offers trips with their exclusive pontoon style catarafts. Adams River Rafting has been operating since1983.

The 2141 will then officially launch the summer season on June 24 at 1 p.m. with Summer Shakedown, an event featuring music, cake and special guests. Tickets are on sale now to mark Canada’s 150th birthday and it gets underway at 9:30 p.m. on July 1.

For 28 years, the Rocky Mountain Railtour has stopped in Kamloops, discharging its passenger load to take in the scenery — or simply relax in the hotel or head out for a meal. The Railtour’s luxury trips are designed for the discerning traveller, featuring travel on the Rocky Mountaineer train with regular stops in Kamloops. While passing vistas, guests can relax and enjoy the interpretive commentary provided by onboard attendants and the à la carte Western
Canadian cuisine served in the private main-level dining room. It’s all part of the reason why the tours have been praised worldwide. National Geographic has called it one of the world’s greatest trips and the Society of American Travel Writers declared it The Best Train Experience in the World. Rocky Mountaineer travels on various routes in both eastbound and westbound directions. The First Passage to the West route travels between Vancouver and Banff
or Calgary; the Journey Through the Clouds route runs between Vancouver and Jasper. On both routes, guests overnight in Kamloops. The Rainforest to Gold Rush route travels between Whistler and Jasper, with an overnight stay in Quesnel. 2017 Kamloops Vacation Guide
Through interactive fun experiences, science becomes meaningful and less mysterious. BIG Little Science Centre exists to provide a place for people to have such experiences. The BIG Little Science Centre Society (a Kamloopsbased non-profit society and registered charity), was created in 2000 by science teacher Gordon Gore. Started from the back of a car, the centre progressed to one room in a school and has increased in size over several moves. It is now at 655 Holt St. in Brocklehurst, in the former Happyvale elementary building. Open for public visits yearround, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., science fun includes more than 140 interactive science exhibits, regular shows and events, science birthday parties, summer camps, robotics programs and clubs. Teachers are encouraged to bring their students
during regular school hours for shows, labs and handson educational fun. A great place for hours of entertainment and learning, the Big Little Science Centre has something for everyone. Adults have as much fun exploring and experimenting as the children. With everchanging science adventure, the shows and activities bring families back again and again. But fun science doesn’t have to happen only at the centre. Many resources are available to encourage and assist children and families with science exploration at home or in the class. The centre website (blscs. org) has links to many fun science sites. As well, past issues of the BIGScience newsletter can be found on the website. Science is meant to be experienced. The staff and volunteers of Big Little Science Centre encourage everyone to explore fun science in the world around you.
