We cannot stress this enough: Exercise IS medicine “I’m just too busy!” This is the most common of the excuses that we use to avoid the time commitment required to exercise. We can all identify with the unrealistic expectations on our time: Family, work, volunteer commitments, running a household. It can all be very stressful. Studies show sustained exposure to psychological stress may result in an inflammatory response. This inflammatory response may be expressed in the body as physical muscle pain and effects to the gastrointestinal tract (tummy troubles), and is a major risk factor in the development in many chronic diseases. Exercise can play a tremendous role in your ability to stress manage. Virtually any form of exercise, from aerobics to yoga, can act as a stress reliever. Physical activity increases your endorphins, also known as your “feel-good neurotransmitter” to raise your mood. How to get started? Always start by talking to your doctor. Some health conditions require special consideration before increasing your activity level. Then find something to do that you enjoy. Explore the many trails and walking paths in Kamloops, take a class and learn to kayak, paddle board or swim, walk dogs for the SPCA — the list goes on and on. Activity does not need to be expensive or complicated.

Baby, it may be cold out — but get moving into fall! As the days get shorter, and the air gets cooler, our first instinct is often to head indoors, find a cozy blanket and get ready to hibernate until the promise of sunshine is back in the spring. I want to challenge each of you to reconsider that option. We live in a beautiful city that offers an abundance of recreational pursuits year-round — whether you are interested in being indoors or outside. The Tournament Capital Centre is a hub of activity regardless of the season, but fall and winter are especially exciting. Not only are the weight rooms buzzing with activity, but the indoor track and pool areas see increases in available programs. Fitness classes are in full swing, including everything from yoga, spin (a.k.a. indoor cycling), strength training, balance, cardio, Zumba
and much more. Regardless of your age or ability level, you can find a class that will fit your abilities and interests. New programs this fall include educational workshops offered at the TCC. The three-part workshop series featured includes challenging your thoughts surrounding positive lifestyle changes. Led by a certified holistic nutritionist, the series kicks off with “Move it to Lose,” discussing the concepts of weight control, affects of internal body systems and the whole concept of calories as they relate to weight control. Followed by the ever-popular “Stop the Diet Mentality,” the course produces thought-provoking discussion surrounding personal relationships with food and examines the role of food in creating a positive lifestyle. Finish up with “Goal Setting and Basic Program Design,” which will equip with you some tools to develop your own basic exercise programs specific to your goals. The Westsyde Community Centre, at 859 Bebek Rd., is an absolute gem, located in the heart of the Westsyde community. Offering access to a 25-meter pool, fitness centre and fitness classes, the community centre is easily accessible for all North Kamloops residents.

A healthy holiday appetite It seems that eating around holiday times is a source of stress for a lot of people when it should be a less stressful time — a time to enjoy family, friends and food. Perhaps we need to re-frame our thinking around food, be it at Thanksgiving or Christmas or any other holiday. What would life look like if we let go of all guilt around those times and allowed ourselves to enjoy all of that amazing food? Here is some food for thought or thought about food: • Letting go of guilt can possibly lessen cravings and the constant thinking of “forbidden” foods. • “Eat a little of a lot” — try everything in small amounts. • Don’t restrict all day in favour of eating everything and anything you want at dinner. Continue to eat at regular intervals during the day but, perhaps, smaller meals/snacks than you normally would. • Make sure you aren’t starving before you go to a social event or holiday meal. If you are too hungry,
you tend to overeat. When your body catches up to let you know you are too full, you may not feel good and this can contribute to feelings of guilt around food. • Offer to bring a dish or dessert. Look for something that is delicious and healthy — something that will strike up conversation. This might make you feel more empowered about the choices you make.
• Stay hydrated at all times. Your body may think it is hungry when actually you just need more water. • Try to do some regular exercise around social events or holiday time. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for our life and food is a large part of that. Give thanks by enjoying some of all the great food we are offered at this time of year without guilt. — Rhonda Eden registered holistic nutritionist Alive and Well for Life reden@ kamloops.ca
Go ahead! Enjoy the season of feasts, but do so with some food for thought on guilt-free eating.
• If you are hosting a meal, set up the food in another room so you don’t have all the food on the table. This can be helpful if you are the type of person who will continue to pick if the food is in front of you.

Ice is nice — for the whole family Come discover one of Canada’s oldest and most popular winter recreational activities. If you are looking for a fun and affordable recreation activity for the whole family, come on out and try some skating and drop-in hockey programs this fall. Skating has great aerobic and cardiovascular benefits, but does not have the joint impact that comes with jogging. Skating also tones muscles, promotes weight loss, increases mental control such as alertness and is great for building self-esteem and confidence. Did you know only 12% of children and youth are meeting Canada’s Physical Activity Guidelines. This means 88% of children and youth are not active enough. Skating does not have to be vigorous; just getting off the couch and onto the ice is a great start to a healthier you. Skating is also a great way to get out and have fun with friends and family while taking part in Canada’s favourite pastime. “Skating is lifetime sport that includes speed, agility and balance — and usually some hot chocolate after, too.,” said Kamloops Coun. Nancy Bepple. “Skating is one of the best ways to enjoy Canada’s winter.” Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to prevent brain injury while on the ice. Remember, your helmet is not doing its job if your chin strap is slack or if your helmet slides about on your head. Be safe and wear a helmet! Don’t chill out — revive the exercise With cooler temperatures around the corner, there’s no time like the present to revive your exercise routine. Being physically active is not only beneficial to your overall well-being; it can also help reduce your risk of serious health conditions. Here are three simple tips to keep your exercise routine on track this fall: • Be committed: Put time into your calendar and commit to working out. Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend you achieve 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity each week, in stretches of 10 minutes or more. Exercises can include walking, skiing, jogging or interval training. • Pace yourself and stay committed: Start off slow and at your own fitness level. Also, think about joining a fitness group or using a “buddy system” to stay motivated. • Do what you love: Find an activity that you love. If you love to play hockey, join a team and get active a few days a week. Also, enlist a friend or loved one to exercise with. You can motivate each other and hold each other accountable for your goals.

Families that play together . . . Childhood obesity is on the rise. Research studies show that more than half of Canadian children and youth are not active enough for optimal growth and development, with girls less active than boys. The latest Canadian Community Health Survey found the combined rate of children and teens who are overweight or obese has jumped from 15 per cent to 26 per cent over the span of just 25 years. Being active and including fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet can help improve and maintain weight. Here are some activities that you and your children can do together this fall: • Walk with your children to school. • Let your children help you rake the leaves and see who can make the biggest pile. • Make sure they are registered for physical activity at school or participate in extracurricular activities. • Get the kids involved in your meals and enjoy some of their favourite dishes together, including pasta, burgers and tacos.

Using your head wisely There are times when we can feel overwhelmed by events that surround us. In sport, in business and in life generally, we are often used to having peaks and troughs, busy times and crazy-busy times. We can have days when we wish time would stand still to give us a break from the craziness we find ourselves in. Then come the quiet days, sometimes, when we draw in our breath and do whatever we can to recharge ready for the next onslaught. Problem: This feeling of being overwhelmed can produce within us a sense of being pulled in many directions. We can become stressed, tired, mentally and physically exhausted, and unable to connect with the peace of mind we all deserve to have on a daily basis. We might feel unable to generate focus, to have quiet confidence and feel like we are not in control. It can affect how well we do a job if we are constantly reminding ourselves of how many other demands there are on our time. Education: While we cannot command this peak and trough cycle totally, we can change how we react to having way more on our plate at one time than we want. How do we do that? We can first make a conscious choice to find “a place of command”. We can practise finding a place of perspective from which we are far more able to direct

the pushes and pulls of our business, sport, and life — and weather the peaks and the troughs with equanimity. My Tip: Consciously practise reframing your perspective on challenges by making the decision to be the chessmaster rather than the pawn moving at the whim of others. Take a step back from the situation so you can perceive the situation more clearly. Imagine there’s another “you” in the top corner of the room, surveying the situation “you down below” are in. The “top you” is getting a different perspective figuratively and mentally. It can see more clearly the overall situation, the wood for the trees, more of the chess game. From this wider perspective, you can learn the habit of dissociation, the habit of taking a step back and getting a clearer view of the situation in a challenge. This was something I practised long before I ever had to make use of it — and useful it was. Learning There is a difference between being “the cause” of what occurs in your life/business or “the effect” of what takes place within it. Being the cause is achieved by taking responsibility for making change and moving forward. Being the effect is allowing yourself to be subject to the situation in which you find yourself. It’s far easier to be at “cause” if you can have a clearer perspective. Quiet confidence, self-control and focus are available to those who take action. By changing perspective, we change our lives. Enjoy your changes today. — Isabelle Hamptonstone master practitioner in accelerated sports performance and stress reduction braintrainwin.com

A lifetime of swimming Babies love water play. Splashing, singing and playing in the water, starting at six months of age, will encourage babies to enjoy an aquatic environment. If a toddler has had positive experience with parents or caregivers, he/she will have a boost in learning future swim skills. All children should to learn to swim. Canadians are surrounded by water and swimming is an important lifesaving skill. Each year, many children drown because they are not supervised appropriately or they do not have basic survival skills in the water. Active agers often need a form of exercise that is joint friendly. Swimming and aquatic exercise classes are non/low impact which will improve overall fitness. Social time is important, too. Many adults and seniors join masters swim clubs or have a regular routine of swimming with a friend, followed by tea or coffee after workout time. Families can enjoy affordable leisure activities at their local pools. Swimming together will promote security and confidence for youngsters. Quality time is important for a busy family and physical activity at a public swim will help kids and their parents stay strong and fit. — Heidi Ogilvie aquatic coordinator City of Kamloops

Feeling stressed out? Massage it out of your system Stress is defined as any physical, physiological or psychological force that disturbs equilibrium. In other words, stress, in relation to our bodies, is any internal or external force that is disruptive to our internal or external balance. External forces are sometimes a little easier to recognize and, therefore ,easier to deal with, but internal sources are not always so easy to see. Hans Selye, an expert on stress said: “We are on guard against external toxicants, but hormones are parts of our bodies. It takes more wisdom to recognize and overcome the foe which fights from within. “In all our actions throughout the day, we must consciously look for signs of being keyed up too much and we must learn to stop in time.” Some common stress symptoms that can help us recognize when we are stressed are: General irritability; hyper-excitation; depression; impulsive behaviour; emotional instability; inability to concentrate; weakness;
dizziness; fatigue; intermittent anxiety; grinding your teeth; insomnia; migraine or tension headaches; and nightmares. There are many more signs and symptoms of stress, and not everyone will react the same way to the same stressor. Stress proportionality is essential in keeping a body and soul healthy physically and emotionally. Sometimes energies need to be diverted.
For example, if you think too much ,you may benefit from using your larger muscles, or conversely if you exercise too much, you should make time to read, watch a movie or listen to some soothing music. Regardless of which way you lean, rest is always a requirement. If you don’t rest, your body may become ill and you will be forced to rest. Proactive health care can help maintain a balanced healthy body. Massage therapy is an effective tool to help maintain this balance. It has been linked to changes in physiological factors, including a reduction in cortisol, which is the hormone associated with stress. Massage will also increase oxytocin, a hormone that regulates calmness and healing, lead to alteration of brainwave patterns (which allows for increased concentration) and result in a reduction of heart rate. Stress is undeniably unavoidable and will eventually catch up to us all if we don’t find ways of handling it effectively. Sources of stress attack us from all angles but, luckily, we have many tools that help to bring harmony back to our lives. Massage Therapy is just one of many tools which can be added to our proactive health-care kit. — Colette Swain registered massage therapist

Embrace the Hakomi Method As I accept that autumn is indeed on its way, I begin to prepare for the waning light by nesting, organizing and stocking up on healthy foods from the harvest. I also turn inward. I notice this is the time of year I want to make commitments to my health and my creative projects. I notice in this shift toward myself is that I am impatient with the transition and with my progress. I want it all to happen now — and that can create frustration. I can watch this happening and that is one of the gifts I’ve learned on my Hakomi path. Instead of reacting without realizing what is happening, and ending up in a cycle of frustration and impatience, I am able to watch my actions. The Hakomi Method slows things down so we can study ourselves in relation to the world around us. Being hijacked by our habits or beliefs can leave us in a cycle of actions and reactions that are unhealthy and cause needless suffering. The self-discovery Hakomi offers is a gentle, playful and insightful way of finding out who we are so we may celebrate ourselves and also make space to change what isn’t working for us. Embodying a new way of being can have a deep, long-lasting impact on our lives. As the new habit is practised in daily life, the new neural pathway gets more travelled and is easier to find, while the old neural pathway (old habit) “grows over” and is no longer the immediate choice. This idea alone is very powerful. We can embody a new pattern, change our brains, live life more freely. Consciousness is choice and choice is freedom. Hakomi is a method of assisted, mindful self discovery so that we may have less suffering, more freedom, more happiness. — Angela Davis
