Meet our

Message from the PROGRAM DIRECTOR

As I am writing this, I have completed my first year as Program Director for the Royal Inland and Hillside Physician Association. During this time, I witnessed courageous physicians endure a pandemic, interior forest fires, and heat waves. These physicians paid a personal price for their commitment. It came at the cost of their own health and well-being.

To care for our community, my role is to support the association of physicians for the physicians. The goal is to provide our physicians with the resources they need to deliver excellent clinical care. In doing so, we encourage physicians to identify projects that will bolster work morale and efficiencies that are not normally covered in their departments. We strive to enhance recruitment and retention, including happy moments in a physician’s day. We “nurture with fun food” by having a coffee and donut day, a cookie day, and snacks provided in the physician’s lounge at RIH and Hillside. An event highlight was “Mingle and Merlot” at Privato. This was an opportunity for our physicians to meet and socialize with their colleagues after being in isolation for the last couple of years.

A positive outcome from this challenging time has been increased cooperation and communication between senior leadership staff at the hospital and Interior Health. Collaborating with Thompson Region Division of Family Practice, Medical Staff Association, Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, and numerous

health-interested services within our community has demonstrated a promising future for health care. When our physicians are healthy, supported, and valued, there are positive outcomes across the entire health care system. It is evident through active project work, our physicians are energized and engaged when their ideas become implemented policies and procedures. We enhance patient experiences and provide them with the best possible care when the vision and passion of our physicians are supported.

I believe how you start a relationship, whether professional or personal, determines a successful ending. I have been so fortunate to work with the most brilliant of minds who have been generous with their time and expertise. I am grateful my commencement in my present position included physician-directors who demonstrate governance with knowledge and kindness. Thank you to Dr. Raymond Maung, Dr. Tochi Anyansi, Dr. Kaveri Gupta, and Dr. Zaheer Kanji. As well, I want to thank the assistance of our Program Coordinator Lindsay Jewell.

I am committed to our strategic plan and look forward to supporting all levels of leadership for the years ahead.

Message from DR TOCHI ANYANSI BOARD OF DIRECTOR, RIHPA (HILLSIDE)

Once again, it is with great pleasure that I write this letter as a member of the board of Royal Inland and Hillside Physician Association representing Hillside Center.

As many of you know, Hillside Center joined Royal Inland Hospital in April 2020 to form the Royal Inland and Hillside Physician Association (RIHPA). This amalgamation has benefitted the two hospitals so much that we merged the two working groups into one in July 2021. This move was also expedient since many of our physicians work in both hospitals.

Together as a physician association representing two sites, we have grown in leaps and bounds. We welcomed new directors last year, and we encouraged physicians to participate in projects that will improve patient outcomes and improve physician wellness. We were able to navigate the challenges of switching to the full use of electronic medical records for charting in RIH. RIHPA was able to support departments to engage their members in the learning processes of this switch.

At Hillside, we are seeing some changes in our physician work force as two of our psychiatrists retire in November 2022. We are making efforts to support Interior Health in recruiting new physicians to take their places. Although we are still struggling with

attracting psychiatrists to Hillside and to Kamloops in general, we have hope that the new physician recruitment lead assigned to the region will prioritize our needs. Nevertheless, Hillside physicians are still very excited to be part of this dynamic association that has achieved so much with so little in the last 6 years. We are looking forward to continued collaboration with our health authority partners through a stronger and more diversified association.

This last year we have increased our engagement with our health authority partners and are happy to have more access to senior management staff of the health authority based in Kamloops.

As we nominate and cast votes for the next set of RIHPA directors at the AGM I call on members to step forward and participate in physician leadership through membership of the Board or Working Groups so that our voices will continue to be heard on matters critical to physician wellness and quality patient care.

Thank you for your continued support of the board and working groups of Royal Inland and Hillside Center.

FACILITY ENGAGEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (FEMS)

WHAT IS THE FACILITY ENGAGEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM?

The Facility Engagement Management System (FEMS) is a web-based information system that provides overall business management support and functions for the Facility Engagement Initiative at both the site and provincial levels. All physician societies with full funding status will use FEMS, at no cost to them, to support their facility engagement work.

WHAT DOES FEMS DO?

For all physicians and allied health professionals: Processes and tracks sessional claims for facility engagement activities, and collects feedback for evaluation purposes. For physician society executives and staff: Supports the management, tracking and reporting of engagement activities and fund usage, and imports financial transactions into its accounting system.

WHY IS FEMS BEING USED?

At the individual physician level, sessional claims can be paid electronically allowing for faster processing times. For ease, claims can also be submitted and viewed through the mobile application of FEMS.

For the Ministry of Health and Doctors of BC, FEMS allows for standardized electronic reporting at several levels, and tracking of physician feedback against engagement activities.

HOW CAN I ACCESS FEMS?

FEMS can be accessed through a desktop/laptop at: fems. facilityengagement.ca or through a mobile device by downloading the mobile application from either Google Play or the Apple App store. The mobile application of FEMS will support registration, and claim submission and tracking. Full features are available on the desktop version.

PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES: NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND PROCESS MAPPING

This facility-based engagement initiative was undertaken to identify areas of improvement regarding patient care; physician work environment; overall population health; a reduction in per capita costs; work capacity and flow; program and service delivery; and patient safety.

The focus included, but was not limited to, emergency access and referrals from the community, mapping of the process of patient outflows from the hospital into the community, and identification of existing service, program and resource gaps that create unnecessary repeat presentation of the patient to the emergency department at RIH.

The project started on February 2022 and was completed in September 2022. The physician lead was Dr. Tochi Anyansi. For a full-detailed executive summary (30 page report and main research findings), please contact RIHPA.

Thank you

LINDSAY JEWELL

I have been with RIHPA for seven months now and I have enjoyed every second of the position. I think it is so important to love what you do. I enjoyed helping plan the first social event since the pandemic “Mingle and Merlot” it was exciting to meet the physicians and see them enjoy being with their colleagues in person.

One of my duties has included

NATRISHA SAGRIS

Little did I know when I joined the MSA team in January 2018, what the next several years would have in store for all of us. I am grateful to be on this journey through, up and around the challenges of the past few years supporting our dedicated medical staff membership. In my role as the MSA and CME coordinator, I am here for your requests and suggestions. If I can't help, I will find someone who can.

I am most proud of our introduction of cultural safety topics within our continuing medical education programming throughout the program year and our ability to stay connected during the pandemic.

providing the doctors with small “acts of appreciation” by providing snacks in the doctor’s lounge, a donut and coffee day, as well as a cookie day. We will continue to try and be creative in the fall and winter months ahead.

I look forward to Facility Engagement Planning with both new and/or existing doctors that want to create positive changes for our hospital at RIH or Hillside. For me to be able to do a job where I can support in a meaningful way, is a complete blessing.

The Royal Inland Hospital Medical Staff Association functions to:

• Attend and advocate at local medical advisory committee meetings

• Represent staff in conflict situations

• Works collaboratively with the Royal Inland Hillside Physician Association (RIHPA) and IH admi to move forward on projects

• MSA Quarterly meetings and membership appreciation and recognition

• Continuing medical education programming and CME events

Thank you to our MSA board members and our CME co-chairs for their ongoing championing of the MSA programs. I look forward to the programming year ahead.
