Fall for camping in the Thompson region
A
vid outdoor enthusiasts deem fall the perfect time of year to take a serious weekend trip. Fish are biting in the Thompson region and the colour of leaves on ATV trails is picture perfect. Ducks are flying above us, heading to warmer climes, and thanks to a fully equipped towable RV, you can still enjoy the beautiful scenery and all the comforts of home without the bugs and crowds. REMOTE CAMPING Due to continued urban development and diminishing access to private land, the use of
grounds are not near traditional campgrounds.
RVs is proving even more essential to outdoor enthusiasts who are being forced to travel well off
the beaten path. Plus, in most cases, the best fishing holes and hunting
CAMP IN COMFORT Because of this trend toward more remote hunting and fishing, the perfect RV for the outdoor enthusiast is the towable, which is designed to be towed by a motorized vehicle (car, van or pickup truck). Towables come in many models including folding camping trailer, truck camper, travel trailer and fifth-wheel travel trailer. Regardless of the specific model, a towable RV is ideal for fall hunting and fishing trips due to its convenient hitch-and-go configuration. Once campers reach their destination, they can unhitch the
trailer, set up camp and use their vehicle to get even closer to the action. For those camping in a remote location, an installed generator is essential. It powers an array of appliances, including air conditioners, hot water heaters, microwaves, refrigerators, furnaces and computers, making base camp feel just like home. Refrigeration is particularly helpful for those looking to preserve recently harvested game. Also, because weather patterns can so widely vary in the fall, travelling in an RV equipped with a generator allows hunters and anglers to be prepared for the worst weather and temperature extremes.

Gear up for your road to outdoor adventure Wildlife recreationalists in North America spend more than $150 billion per year on their activities. If you are on the road to outdoor adventure this fall, here are some essentials to consider: • Binoculars: Scoping out territory and looking for game is often part of the hunt. A set of durable new binoculars can give hunters an edge. • Heated shoe insoles: Hunting and fishing often require long wait periods, sometimes in chilly weather. Heated shoe insoles and hand warmers can keep outdoorsmen warm. • GPS/digital watch: Although many smartphones tell time and offer GPS services, lightweight watches may be more conve-
nient than phones as they can be waterproof and offer such functions as GPS, an altimeter, a barometer and a digital compass. • All-season tent: Camping out is not just a summer activity. A tent that is rated to withstand various temperatures and conditions is an asset. • Waders: Anglers sometimes need to get up close and personal with their prey. A sturdy pair of breathable waders is ideal for those who venture out of the boat or off the bank. • Wool socks: They may be a basic item, but hikers, hunters and other sports people can’t stock up enough on warm, sweatwicking wool socks that will keep their feet comfortable and dry on all excursions.

• Folding knife: Knives are ideal for cutting fishing line, twigs for a campfire and much more. A sturdy, quality knife that fits easily in a pocket or backpack is a must-have for hunters, campers and anglers. • Water-resistant pouch: A day on the boat or near the water requires gear that can get wet without soiling items stored inside. Choose a pouch that can easily fit a camera, keys, phone and other necessities. • Climbing stand: Hunters frequently spend time up in the trees to get a better view of oncoming game. Stationary tree stands may remain for the season, but lightweight offerings fold and can be transported from area to area.

How to make sure your ride is ready for winter
S
ummer and fall can stake their claim as road trip season and even devoted drivers may admit that winter is generally a less desirable time to take to the open road. The elements factor heavily into that reputation, as fewer hours of daylight, snow and ice are just some of the variables that can make it less enjoyable, and potentially more dangerous, to drive in winter. In anticipation of adverse driving conditions, vehicle owners can take various steps to prepare their cars and trucks for winter. • Upgrade your wiper blades. Perhaps nothing is compromised more than visibility when driving in winter compared
to other times of year. Snow makes it hard to see when driving, but fewer hours of daylight also can affect visibility. In fact, half of all fatal crashes occur between
6 p.m. and 6 a.m., even though the number of drivers on the road during those hours is considerably lower than it is during the daytime. The difficulty of driving at night is even more significant when wiper blades are not up to the task of keeping rain and snow off drivers’ windshields. Prior to winter, inspect wiper blades and upgrade them, if necessary. Streaks left on a windshield are a telltale sign that blades need to be replaced. • Purchase winter tires. Winter tires are essential in the Kamloops area and drivers should have them on by October, especially if travelling highways is planned. Between Oct. 1 and April 30, all vehicles on the Coquihalla Highway must be equipped with winter tires. Those tires should have an M+S designation (meaning mud and
snow), although a tire with a threepeaked mountain and snowflake symbol is the best choice. Winter tires are specially designed to handle snowy, slippery and icy conditions, making them a worthy investment for drivers who live in the B.C. Interior. • Study up on your engine oil. Some vehicle manufacturers recommend different grades of oil depending on the range of temperatures a car or truck will be driven in. The owner’s manual will likely indicate if the manufacturer recommends using a different type of engine oil in especially cold temperatures. Even if the manual does not include such a suggestion, drivers can seek the advice of a mechanic, from which there are plenty to
choose in Kamloops. • Schedule a pre-winter tune up. Even if a vehicle is not due for a tune up, it can be wise to have it looked over by a mechanic before the arrival of harsh winter weather. And that wicked weather can arrive suddenly, as Kamloopsians are well aware, considering last year saw summer morph into winter just after Halloween, with precious little fall weather in between. A mechanic can check the radiator, hoses and other components that could be affected by especially cold weather in the months to come. If any issues are found, address them immediately. After all, it’s better to be proactive than leave yourself vulnerable to breakdowns or other issues once the mercury drops.

Finding fish below all that frozen water
F
or more than 20 years, the Kamloops and District Fish and Game Association has been putting ice fishing rods in the hands of children and amateurs and helping them learn how to ice fish during its annual Introduction to Ice Fishing event. The annual excursions take place in January at Walloper Lake, just south of Kamloops. Details of the January 2024 event will be posted in the weeks to come on the association’s website at kdfga.ca. The event is intended for anyone new to the sport of ice fishing and is entirely free of charge. No pre-registration or licences are required, though people are asked to sign in when they arrive. The club does accept donations for baskets that are brought to the event. Hamburgers, hot dogs and hot chocolate is available for those participating and there is always a large bonfire to keep all the fisher folk warm, though most probably won’t want to stray too far from their designated fishing holes and the opportunity to reel in a big one. The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC has often donated ice fishing rods, reels and lines that are handed out as prizes to children at the event. The organization is also planning to provide ice fishing demonstrations.
The Kamloops and District Fish and Game Association holds several public events each year, including the popular ice-fishing day at Walloper Lake in January. KDFGA photo

CROSS COUNTRY

CONNECTIONS Cross-country skiing is one of the most beginner-friendly sports around and the Overlander Ski Club, just south of Kamloops, is the place to be to explore the winter woods, The club maintains more than 60 kilometres of ski trails that are groomed every year, including five kilometres of dog trails and about eight kilometres of lit trails, featuring LED lights acquired via a grant from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. There are also 20 kilometres of snowshoe trails and seven kilometres of adventure trails. The trails are located at Stake Lake, about a 30-minute drive south of Kamloops along the Coquihalla Highway, and there are routes for all experience levels. The day lodge is located right near the parking lot at Stake Lake and features staff
who keep the fire roaring throughout the day. The club’s trails feature a unique experience for younger skiers — the Stuffy Ranger Program. Special trails for young skiers or snowshoers feature a number of stuffed toys along the route for the kids to spot. Children who find them all will be rewarded with a Stuffy Ranger Badge. Club members can get access to both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing throughout the year, but the club also offers day rates and punch cards. For those without their own gear, rentals are available through the club, including a pulk, which allows skiers to pull young children. Early bird rates for registration are available until Nov. 15. For more information on rates and how to register with the Overlander Ski Club, go online to overlanderskiclub.com.
