It’s a great habitat for mason bees and they pollinate up to three times more than regular honey bees do. • Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? Get the kids exploring the backyard and the neighbourhood with a scavenger hunt. You can find fun cards like the Family Scavenger Hunt card set that gives you images of outdoor items to hunt for. You can also create your own fun list of things to seek out. From meandering strolls through grasslands to hiking rugged, steep valleys, there are trails for every level of adventurer.

Hiking Best Practices

Here are some best practices for social distancing while hiking: • Keep at least two metres (six feet) from others; • Visit parks and trails during less busy times; • Stay local, avoid crowded parks and trails; • Don’t linger and avoid gathering in groups; • Hike solo (or only with your household); • Wash or sanitize hands after touching communal surfaces like gates or garbage bins; • Bring your own ‘Clean Trip Kit’. A clean trip kit includes hand sanitizer, gloves and toilet paper; • Stay home if you are feeling sick, especially if you are coughing or experiencing a fever.

Hiking Trails and Areas

Kenna Cartwright Nature Park is the largest municipal park in British Columbia, covering almost 800 hectares of terrain. The park features more than 40 kilometres of trails of varying difficulties that are enjoyed by hikers, mountain bikers, walkers, families and dogs. The park offers many breathtaking views of the Thompson Valley and Kamloops, as well as several benches and picnic

tables, where you can catch your breath. Kenna Cartwright Park is delightful any time of the year, for any skill of hiker, and is off-leash dog-friendly. Peterson Creek Nature Park is situated in the heart of the city along a natural creek corridor. The park encompasses almost 100 hectares and features in excess of 10 kilometres of trails. Trails vary in difficulty, largely influenced by elevation change, and offers trails for every skill level. Peterson Creek is widely used during the summer months, is off-leash dog-friendly and features a remarkable view of the downtown core. Valleyview Nature Park is high above the silt bluffs of Valleyview. Explore the trails of the Valleyview Nature Park as they wind through the fragrant desert sagebrush. A variety of trails allows you to discover the hidden beauty that awaits you in this small park. You might even catch a glimpse of mountain bikers tackling the Kamloops terrain in the Kamloops Bike Ranch next door. Dallas-Barnhartvale Nature Park connects the Barnhartvale and Dallas communities through a series of trails through the grassland landscape. Take in views along the South Thompson River as you admire the silt cliffs below. Isobel Lake is located in the Lac du Bois Grasslands, 40 minutes from downtown Kamloops. Explore the interpretive trail that loops around Isobel Lake. The three-kilometre low mobility trail offers rest benches, picnic tables and fully accessible outhouses and docks so that everyone, including those in strollers or wheelchairs, can enjoy the trail.

Battle Bluff trail begins in the Dewdrop Range, a protected grasslands area northwest of Kamloops that overlooks Kamloops Lake. The trail winds over a low hill, then descend to some open grasslands before climbing the rocky bluff to the viewpoint overlooking the lake. The medium difficulty trail is a 4.8 kilometre return hike. Dewdrop Trail also starts in the Dewdrop Range. The trail approaches the bottom of the cliffs, climbing the ridge and brings hikers to the edge of the cliffs. This hard difficulty trail offers a commanding view of the Thompson Valley below. There are many picturesque spots to stop and take in the view or have some lunch. Embleton Mountain is en route to Sun Peaks Resort. The trails climb to an incredible view of Heffley Lake. At nearly nine kilometres long, it’s a great trail to get your heart pumping and includes a gazebo and picnic table awaiting you at the summit. Be sure to stop and smell the flowers during the warmer months as this trail winds through fields of blooming alpine wildflowers. Sun Peaks Resort: From July to September, explore the 18 designated hiking trails at the resort. Choose from easy, sightseeing strolls to an awe-inspiring summit and a break at Tod Lake. An exciting time to visit is during the alpine blossom season, which occurs between mid-July and mid-August. Witness rolling alpine meadows in their kaleidoscope of wildflower brilliance while taking in the delightful aromas of the blooms. — Tourism Kamloops

o-owners Peter and Jennifer Madsen carefully co-ordinated opening and new safety precautions with the other major zip line businesses in the North Okanagan, Kootenays, Whistler, Vancouver Island and elsewhere. ”We had zoom meetings for months to brainstorm best practices and to create a consensus concerning protocals,” Peter said, noting owners of adventure parks helped each other overcome difficulties caused with the new normal of social distancing. “We have thought through each scenario and have strived to put in procedures that best protect guests and staff.” A few of the most noteworthy changes include a 40 per cent reduction in the tour capacity. Staff are protected by shields. Oyama Zipline Adventure Park will open all four adventure attractions on May 15. “Some are surprised we cater to those as young as three years old and, at the same time, offer many of the longest, fastest ziplines in the country. Families find we have something for every age group and ability” Jennifer said. “Forest Monkey Playland is open, with aerial trekking and ziplining for ages three to 11. This new netted aerial play area is a great venue to get out of the house.” The premium guided sevenstation zipline is a great option

to get together in the outdoors. Bracelets mark “bubbles,” so families can participate mask-less when distanced from other “bubbles.” The three new value-priced attractions include Green, Blue and Black aerial obstacle courses in Forest Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course, a fresh way to challenge physical and mental prowess in an invigorating outdoor setting. Guests explore via three levels of platforms and tree-to-tree obstacles. The Aerial Park not only provides more choices for local groups, but is a lower price point than the seven-station zip tour. Many find this a great option to celebrate birthdays with a crowd (easy to distance, yet be together). “Oyama Zipline Adventure Park is a wild treetop adventure for the entire family,” zip park manager Jen Thompson said. “Oyama has Okanagan adventures just your speed.” Guest can stay busy at the adventure park the whole day. They can experience the 2.5-hour zipline tour, have a picnic, then tree trek and do parkour moves in the three -level Aerial Park. Alternatively, guests can visit for an hour or less, take in the view and enjoy a Freefall QuickJump amusement ride. Online booking is open now and reservations are highly recommended. WCT STAGING SUMMER FUN FOR ALL AGES

estern Canada Theatre has transformed the lives of many in this region, whether you are a season ticket holder or attend an occasional show with a friend. Maybe you grew up attending school matinées or took part in Stage One youth theatre classes or camps. WCT actually started as a community youth theatre group, led by local drama teacher Tom Kerr, in the 1960s and became a professional theatre company in 1976. WCT has grown into one of the country’s most cherished regional theatre companies over the last 45 years, producing high-calibre, professional theatre that resonates on a national scale, right here in Kamloops. As part of this growth, our roots in education and the community have remained strong. In addition to successful theatre classes for young people and adults, many artists and technicians have apprenticed and learned their craft here. New plays that were developed and produced here at

WCT have gone on to wow audiences around the world. Educators have found useful resources here and brought their students to special matinée performances. While adding enrichment for our audience with learning guides, talkback and special performances, WCT reaches out into the community to host workshops, lead corporate team-building sessions, and produce community events such as BrewLoops and the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts. WCT recently launched The Hub for Creative Learning, which gathers all of these education and outreach activities and makes them accessible to all Kamloopsians. Continuing with inperson classes has been a silver lining in a challenging year for all of us. We look forward to announcing our next season — and to gathering together as a community very soon.

SUMMER SWIM & PLAY CAMPS WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

**Due to the ongoing covid restrictions, instructors are still not able to get in the water to instruct. Since we only have access to the deep pools at the Canada Games Pool, we will only be able to accomodate swimmers in blue level and up this summer.

Minimum swimming skills: comfortable in deep water - can swim 10m unassisted. Our Swim & Play Camps include swim lessons that follow the same great SwimSkill Lesson Program that we offer throughout the year. In addition to the two, 45 minute swim lessons per half-day session (half-day program only), there will be daily out-of-water activities to keep our campers engaged.

Happily, you can take home a whole pie or three from the farm store, as well as seasonal produce, apple juice, preserves and much more, grown or made right on the farm. Meander in the gift shop, where there is something for everyone, and see the miniature tractor train that delights kids of all ages. The Kamloops Youth Soccer Association is dedicated to providing the community with a fun, inclusive, challenging and safe soccer experience. All academy programs are led by trained, certified and paid instructors and participants are grouped with likeminded individuals of similar abilities to ensure each participant is challenged appropriately. KYSA’s programs will follow enhanced safety protocols and modified formatting as required by provincial health guidelines. he Kamloops Arts Council (KAC) is a registered charitable organization that is devoted to the development and enhancement of the arts in the Kamloops area. For more than 50 years (founded 1968), the KAC has supported all artists and art organizations and promotes co-operation among them, government and business. The KAC provides local artists and arts groups — visual artists, musicians, dancers, writers and actors — with opportunities for exposure, networking and professional development. As part of its mandate, the Kamloops Arts Council takes the arts out to the community — producing high-quality, year-round low- and no-cost arts programs, performances, workshops and events for all. The council believes the arts are for everyone and that they have the power to heal, transform, connect and develop skills in children, youth, adults and seniors, including those in crisis. Art changes lives. The Kamloops Arts Council’s Main, Hallway, Alcove and Vault galleries are a non-curated, open exhibition space for community artists and arts groups. Located in the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre, downtown at Seymour Street and First Avenue, the galleries host 2D and 3D exhibitions on a rotating basis, totalling between 10 and 12 exhibitions per year. he Royal Soccer Club is celebrating its 29th annual summer soccer camp. Having hosted more than 300,000 campers in more than 100 locations across Canada, The Royal Soccer Club is the No. 1 grassroots soccer day camp in Canada. Its program is designed to promote personal development, team building and, of course, fun! The camp program is uniquely designed to offer a soccer focus in the morning and a leisure swim with other organized camp activities in the afternoons. All boys and girls between the ages of five and 13 are encouraged to register for full day or morning sessions. Campers receive a soccer ball, T-shirt, A medal and much more.
