TRAVEL BACK THROUGH TIME in Barkerville

Astaycation can also involve journeying a bit outside your local region — and what is better than travelling back in time?

The Theatre Royal in Barkerville will be opening earlier this year, with previews of its new familyfriendly variety show launching on June 3.

This was made possible due to a generous donation made by Osisko Development and Osisko Gold Royalties, as well as personal contributions that were made by senior Osisko executives, bringing the total to $80,000. This allowed Barkerville to call its performers back to work early for rehearsals and also covers costs for script development, music composition and seasonal salaries for the theatre’s talented musicians.

“Since 1868, the Theatre Royal has been the heart of Barkerville’s gold rush community, sustained by successful and famous gold miners who craved entertainment as a reprieve from the Cariboo’s harsh living and working circumstances,” said Barkerville Historic Town & Park CEO Kate Cox.

“Through their support, Osisko is following in those

footsteps by supporting the community’s tourism, arts and culture economy, employing 13 professional historic interpreters, accelerating the growth of ancillary programs and businesses and bringing Barkerville’s magic to an estimated 40,000-plus visitors.”

Added Osisko Development president Chris Lodder: “It is a real pleasure to continue to support Barkerville Historic Town & Park and watch it grow into the diverse, sustainable, economic fabric that has been developing in the Wells, Barkerville, Bowron Lakes region of the Cariboo.”

Shows at the Theatre Royal will begin on June 3, with shows each day at 2 p.m. During June only, there will be no shows on Thursdays. Performances will move to seven days a week after the Theatre Royal’s grand opening during the Dominion Day festivities on July 1.

Celebrate Overlanders Day on the Shore this summer

The annual celebration will take place on July 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Brocklehurst Park.

There will be a food expo featuring 10 wellknown local vendors and an entertainment stage with non-stop performances all day long, guided by emcee Nick Carter.

There will also be a bigger and better Kidz Zone that will take up the entire end of the park, with a 45-foot obstacle course, a slide and bouncy castle, face painting, crafts, games, golf, clowns and more.

Overlanders Day will also include a business and community expo with more than 90 vendors of crafts artisans and local businesses, an animal corner with 10 vendors covering all sorts of animals, a cake-eating contest sponsored by Harvest Moon Bakery, a dunk tank, mascots and fire truck.

There will be a new contest this year, a timed kids-paint-their-dads’-faces competition, along with the popular Doxie dog races.

Buskers Festival returns to Riverside Park

This year marks the fourth edition of the Kamloops International Buskers Festival, a free-to-attend street theatre festival that is as unique as the city that gives it a home.

The festival brings four days of fun to downtown Kamloops, and features professional street performers from around the world, as well as regional and local performers (amateur, emergent and professional).

The festival will be held in Riverside Park from July 27 to July 30.

The objective of the Kamloops International Buskers Festival is to bring free, live performing arts programming to the Interior of B.C. in an inclusive and accessible way.

It is not often that performances of this quality and calibre are provided free of charge in an outdoor festival setting. The acts are limited only by the imagination and skill of the performers, two commodities they have in boundless supply.

The great thing about busking is that it doesn’t discriminate — it is an art form that is available to anyone regardless of age, race, ethnicity or religion. The festival allows anyone to showcase their talents in a safe and judgment-free space and encourages individuals from all walks of life to take part in the festival. Arts and performing are a common ground between many cultures and it allows people to connect on various levels.

IN THE PARK

There will be two stages located at the east end of Riverside Park and a third stage at the west end, near the spray park. Multiple busk stop locations throughout Riverside Park will feature an amazing variety of local buskers and artisans, entertainment, art, music and more.

CONSIDER A TIP

While it is free to attend the Kamloops International Buskers Festival, the performers do work for gratuities. Each performer welcomes tips at the end of their performance, money that goes directly to that performer or act. This is how they earn their living as they travel the world to perform at street festivals.

MEET MANY ANIMALS AT BC WILDLIFE PARK

With wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in mind, the BC Wildlife Park is home to 65 different species that are found only in this province, including the only Kermode bear in the world that is cared for by humans.

Soon, the grizzly bear siblings — known as Knute and Dawson — that were raised in Kamloops will see their habitat expand at the park by 50 per cent, a project estimated to cost $1.5 million.

The change is expected to occur in early 2025 after coyotes were relocated to Québec and improvements were made to the raccoon exhibit to open up space for Knox and Dawson to sprawl out and roam, while expanding nature trails for public access.

“The two we have are siblings and they grew up in that space,” BC Wildlife Park executive director Glenn Grant said.

Grant said the average life expectancy of grizzly bears in parks is around 30 years, leaving another 20 years, give or take, for the siblings who reside there today.

In addition, the BC Wildlife Park houses cougars, bears, wolves, reptiles and birds of prey.

In 2022, the park had the second-best attendance ever, welcoming more than 118,000 people. In addition, the Wildlights extravaganza — which features about one-million lights amid various entertainment through December — had its best attendance since 2005.

Grant said the park has some exciting plans to expand in the next five years.

“We’ve got a ton of goals for the future,” Grant said. “Our new master plan actually has 12 different components to it and they’re kind of split up. Some are education-based, some are visitor-based, some are animal welfare-based and some are operational.”

A fundraiser that aims to raise $750,000 will be launched in early May to make the playground accessible for children who have mobility issues.

“It’s something that is desperately needed. It’s pea gravel in there. It’s very difficult for kids with mobility issues to access,” he said, noting there will also be an emphasis on improving educational programs.

Bird of Prey Flight Demonstrations

During July and August, visitors can amble over to the Highland Valley Copper Amphitheatre for an up-close look at some of British Columbia’s incredible birds of prey as they fly overhead.

Feed Talks

What is the largest land mammal in North America? Do bighorn sheep have horns or antlers? How do red foxes hunt? Is a kermode bear different than a black bear? Fascinating facts will be fed to visitors at different animal habitats throughout the summer as guests learn more about each animal. Upon arrival, be sure to check the daily schedule to see which animal is being featured at what time.

Wildlife Express

(Open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during May and June, but may also be operating on weekdays in July and August, depending on volunteer availability.)

The wheelchair-accessible Wildlife Express miniature train takes passengers on a short ride through various areas of the BC Wildlife Park. Tickets are just $1 each, including tax, and can be purchased at the train station (cash only). Note: the train will not operate when temperatures exceed 30 C.

Tapestry Festival Multicultural Event ties together a diverse Kamloops

The second annual Tapestry Festival Multicultural Event will return to McDonald Park in North Kamloops on Sept. 16.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The inaugural Tapestry Festival in 2022 was a massive success, with large crowds gathering in the park to enjoy food, music and performances of various disciplines.

This year, there will be something for everyone, from dangers and singers and bands and drummers featuring music and moves with connections to Jamaica, Spain, India and more.

While the performers will be on the main stage, guided by emcee Tara Holmes, a nearby food pavilion will feature eight vendors and a worlds of cuisine to discover.

Their Multicultural Neighbourhood will be filled with pavilions and vendors from numerous countries. Featured will be the Art Pavilion, which will have ethnic artists showing and explaining how their art reflects their culture, and the World Kids Zone, which will have a large bouncy slide castle, face painting, crafts, multicultural games, Chinese Dragon and more.

All vendors will be wearing their cultural regalia, so visitors are encouraged to bring cameras and take photos with the vendors and performers.

Dig into Ribfest

Kamloops Daybreak Rotary Ribfest returns to Riverside Park this summer, with the popular event taking place from Aug. 11 to Aug. 13.

This year will mark the 11th edition of Western Canada’s largest ribbing event, which includes tasty ribs, plenty of entertainment and a family fun zone.

Ribbers attending this year’s event include Boss Hog’s, Gator BBQ, House of Q, Grizzly BBQ, Prairie Smoke and Spice and Smoke Dem Bones BBQ.

Ribfest is held to raise money for various Kamloops organizations, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to various causes.

Since 2012, Ribfest has helped numerous groups, including Literacy Kamloops, BGC Kamloops, Power Start Breakfast Program, Breakfast for Babies in support of the Kamloops Food Bank, TRU scholarships, Kamloops Girl Guides, Toys for Kids Breakfast, SKSS field hockey team, Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre, Kamloops Minor Baseball Association, Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House, YMCA/YWCA Strong Kids Program, Junior Achievement and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region.

Theatre Under the Trees

Theatre Under the Trees will return in July, this year featuring The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

From July 10 to July 29, Project X Theatre’s annual outdoor play series will feature Kamloops actors in nightly theatre productions in Prince Charles Park.

The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito is a musical cabaret production by Indigenous playwright Tomson Highway. It tells the story of Mary Jane, a wingless mosquito from Petit Petit LePaw, Manitoba, who overcomes fear and adversity to make new friends. That play will be directed by Cheyenne Scott.

An adaptation of The Hobbit by Greg Banks is the other play selected this year. The classic tale will feature Bilbo Baggins, who learns that friendship is more valuable than gold. Jennica Grienke will direct.

A Hot Nite in Kamloops

The annual Hot Nite in the City show and shine event in downtown Kamloops will be held on Aug. 11 and Aug. 12.

Kamloopa Powwow

The 42nd Kamloopa Powwow will take place at the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Powwow Arbour from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6.

Thousands of spectators and participants attend the powwow each year, making it one of the largest such events in Western Canada.

The Kamloopa Powwow represents the Secwépemc people’s heritage and includes storytelling, singing, dancing, vendors and much more.

The event was started by the Shuswap Brothers and Sisters Society in 1980 and attracts visitors from around the world.

The decades-long event features more than 500 vehicles on display in downtown Kamloops, with the city’s main road — Victoria Street — closed to traffic for several blocks, allowing thousands of visitors to stroll up and down the street, checking out the amazing vehicle lineup.

The event will feature street rods, custom, American muscle cars, sport-compacts, tuners, collector and vintage cars, motorcycles, race cars, competition vehicles, big rigs and more.

In addition, Victoria Street will be lined with booths featuring myriad organizations, including Kamloops This Week, while visitors can take a break by grabbing a bite to eat and a beverage from one of the many businesses in the area and enjoy some of the entertainment along the route.

Dust off your cowboy hat, give your boots a polish and get your giddy-up going for the best dang rodeo and country fair anywhere.

The folks at the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association are hooting and hollering to announce their 74th annual North Thompson Fall Fair and BC Rodeo Association’s Polaris Championship Rodeo Finals will be running at full steam over the September Labour Day weekend in Barriere.

This annual family-friendly event will be packed with fun and entertainment for all ages.

Cowboys will be hungry for the championship buckles, the livestock will be more than ready to show what they can do and the crowd will be standing in their seats, cheering for the winners.

In addition to the popular rodeo, you can catch the big Fall Fair parade as it moves through Barriere at 11 a.m. on the Saturday of the long weekend, the children’s parade on Monday morning or visit with a buddy in the beer garden while you watch the lawnmower races.

You can also check out the 4-H and livestock competitions, the heavy horse pulls and the light horse show, in addition to touring the Fall Fair exhibit hall, visiting with the numerous vendors, experiencing yummy offerings from each of the concessions or sitting in the shade and enjoying a giant ice cream cone while the youngsters have a ball in the Kids Zone.

Don’t forget the Bull In The Woods Amateur Lumberjack competition on the Sunday and let your youngsters or teens participate on Saturday and Monday in youth lumberjack competitions, including axe throw, chocker races, log rolling, pole climb and much, much more — all provided under the watchful eye of the world-famous Laughing Loggers.

Because of unending community spirit and dedicated hard-working volunteers, the dream that was started 74 years ago by a small group of area pioneers and ranchers lives on today. THE BIG LITTLE SCIENCE CENTRE WILL WOW YOU

There is always amazing fun, hands-on exhibits, interactive shows, science programs and special activities at the BIG Little Science Centre, where you can join the friendly, knowledgeable staff and volunteers in exploring and discovering all kinds of science.

An intimate atmosphere encourages families to try out activities about physics, chemistry and biology. Magnetism, balldrops, mini tornadoes, rocks that glow and so much more are there for you to touch and try. Conveniently located downtown, at Seymour Street and Fifth Avenue, the BIG Little Science Centre is a tourist attraction and a not-for-profit charity, with a twist.

Its mission is to “develop a passion for science in our community” and the science centre’s interactive exhibits soon

prove that “science is a verb”. The Micro Science Store carries fun, exciting gifts for all budding scientists and membership benefits include free or discounted entry to science centres across Canada, including Science World in Vancouver.

The BIG Little Science Centre is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drop in for a visit or call to book your event. School groups and daycares are invited to book a visit during the week. The science centre’s Facebook page shares science from the community and the world, including activities to try at home. Science is everywhere — engage and learn.
