Important fall-semester dates at Thompson Rivers University

Some important dates to circle on your calendar and save in your phone

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Just off Student Street in Old Main you’ll find Students Corner under the stairs. Inside, you’ll find a ton of helpful information, activity, encouragement, positive mentors and a helping hand.

Monday, Sept. 2 — JumpStart is a special day on campus where some services are open during the stat holiday. Get a head start on your semester! Tuesday, Sept. 3 — TRU’s new student orientation is going to be bigger and better than ever! New students will join in for a high energy welcome, a campus tour, barbecue, games and a resource fair where you can learn all about life at TRU. Also, join other students in your program for an Academic Open House where you will meet faculty and get familiar with the campus.

Friday, Oct. 25 — The last day you can withdraw from a course in the fall semester.

Friday, Sept. 6 — The Back-to-School Barbecue takes place every year on the first Friday of classes. The barbecue includes free food as well as music, entertainment and games. Also, there are tables set up with loads of information that will come in handy later in your semester.

Dec. 2 to Dec. 14 — These dates are set aside for a very important event — final exams. Although the exact date and time of exams for your specific courses won’t be posted until halfway through the semester, it’s a good idea to start thinking about them now. The more prepared you are, the less all-night cramming you’ll have to do.

Friday, Sept. 20 — The last day to apply for most TRU scholarships, bursaries and awards.

For a full list of important dates, go online to tru.ca/admreg/dates.html

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS Attending university can be intimidating. Whether you’re fresh out of high school or about to start a consecutive year in post-secondary, you may be approaching uncharted territory. It can be even scarier when that new school is in a new country. The great thing about TRU is there are hundreds of other international students with the same questions as you. The Writing Centre (located in the Old Main Building, room 2764) is a great resource at every TRU student’s disposal. First-years, fourth-years, beginners and even professionals all need feedback on their work at one point or another. If English isn’t your first language and you find yourself struggling with those first few assignments, the centre is a great place to go for help. TRU’s International Student Advisors provide personal counseling for international students both before your arrival in Canada and during your program. A few important dates to remember: Tuesday, Sept. 3, is Student Orientation Day. Not only

can orientation help you get your bearings, it can introduce you to other students from different countries who are also new to Kamloops. Friday, Nov. 1, is the last day for all international students to pay their fees.

FIND ME IN THE CLUB

No matter your interests, there’s a club for that

Joining one of the many student clubs available at TRU can be a good way to meet like-minded individuals and form new friendships. There are four different TRUSU club categories including academic, common interest, ethnicity and political or religion-based, which makes for over 60 clubs! For a full list of all TRUSU clubs, head to trusu.ca/ section/202. The extra-curricular activities in which you participate during your time at university can play an important role in your future, and can add polish and punch to a grad school application or working resume. Did you know you can found your own TRUSU club? For information on how to start your own club and receive funding and certification, head to TRUSU’s website. TRUSU also hosts a clubs day twice a year (once in the fall semester and once in the winter semester). It’s a perfect time to meet some of the founders and check out what the groups are all about. discover your city If you’re new to Kamloops, welcome! Here is a little information about the city’s major areas. Whether it’s navigating to a classmate’s house or searching for a new coffee spot, this page will definitely come in handy. Aberdeen: Located on the slope of the southern hills overlooking Kamloops, this is one of the fastest growing areas in the city. Aberdeen is within walking distance of Upper and Lower Sahali and is home to Costco and the Aberdeen Mall (Kamloops’ biggest shopping centre). Sahali: On the south shore of the Thompson River, Sahali is divided into two parts — Upper Sahali (which is mainly residential) and Lower Sahali (which is just minutes from TRU). As well, the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) is located nearby. If you’re living on campus, Sahali will soon become a familiar part of town. As well, there are a number of shopping destinations, grocery stores and restaurants in the area. Downtown: Boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops make this a great place to explore. Don’t forget to catch a game at Interior Savings Centre and check out the

museum and art gallery. North Kamloops: Just across the Overlanders Bridge from downtown, North Kamloops is home to a vibrant retail area and plenty of restaurants, pubs, bars and art galleries. Brocklehurst: Brock is located northwest of the city’s downtown core and is about 30 minutes via bus from TRU. Brock is home to Kamloops Airport, the Kamloops Golf and

Country Club, a Coopers grocery store, Tim Hortons and several other small businesses. There are many different areas to explore in Kamloops (including Westsyde, Pineview, Valleyview, Dallas and others) and, although this list is not totally comprehensive, it’s a good start. For a more inclusive look at Kamloops, head to kamloops.ca/maps/ index.shtml or download the myKamloops mobile app.

FEED YOUR BRAIN Fine dining on campus

There is no shortage of good food on and around TRU campus

WHERE TO GO OFF-CAMPUS

Find student-run fine dining in the Culinary Arts building. You can also do breakfast (8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) or lunch (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.), or reserve a seat for dinner at Accolades, which is the only university restaurant listed in the Where to Eat in Canada guide. At Accolades, students prepare gourmet dishes for approximately $10 a plate, offering a nice mid-day break between hectic class times and study sessions. Alternatively, bring your own sandwich to pair with a hot bowl of soup.

True Spirits Lounge: Across the street from TRU’s campus, the lounge opened last summer and features a wide selection of international fare, as well as extensive martini, cocktail and beer menus. Earls: Kamloops might be home to only one Earls location, but at least it’s close to campus — near the corner of Columbia Street and Notre Dame Drive. Montana’s: Looking for ribs? Meatloaf? A really big burger? Montana’s has all those, not to mention the atmosphere of a hunting cabin, on Notre Dame near Hillside.

Caffeine fix

Elsewhere in Kamloops

There are several coffee shops on campus, including Old Main and House of Learning (HOL). There’s also Common Grounds in the Campus Activity Centre (CAC), which is student-founded and student-run. For trades students, just head to the second floor of the Trade and Technology building for your caffeine fix. Finally, the International building houses the International Café, which offers quick sandwiches, salads and a selection of Starbucks’ coffees. Some areas will be renovated soon so watch for changes.

Kamloops has a lot to offer in the dining department. So, if you’re new to town, it’s worth wandering around and doing your own research. That said, here are some tips: The largest cluster of local restaurants is downtown, where you’ll find spots like Hot House Bistro, The Brownstone, Hoja Mongolian Grill and Sanbiki, as well as chain restaurants like Boston Pizza and The Keg. North Kamloops is home to many great local eateries as well, including Mino’s and Cap’n Sharky’s.

Something quick The Old Main building has a café if you’re looking for something quick between classes. For a broader selection, the Terrace Café in the CAC offers more options, like a salad bar, noodle bar, burgers, chicken fingers, fries and pizza. In the future, there will be a major food court on the second floor terrace of Old Main.

Meat by the pound Ever wonder what the Retail Meat Store is all about? Well, it’s run and operated by TRU for the purpose of training students in the retail meat-processing certificate program. The meat store offers everything from seafood and beef to pork and poultry, much of it locally sourced. As well, you can purchase baked goods that have been prepared by the culinary arts bakery. It’s a good place to go if you’re looking to get more bang for your buck.

Don’t forget Heroes Heroes pub is on the second floor of the CAC (right beside the Terrace Café) and is the perfect place to unwind with friends. The pub has daily specials and often hosts special oncampus events.

stay active Staying fit and healthy can be done right on campus. Free fitness classes are available for all students and no registration is required. There are a variety of different classes offered, from a lunch crunch session to Zumba and even weight sculpting classes. It’s important to remember classes are drop-in and can fill up. So, if you’ve got a few hours between classes and are looking to burn off some steam, feel free to check them out. Go online to rec.inside.tru.ca/fitness for a full list of class schedules and their descriptions. The Tournament Capital Centre, home to a six-lane indoor track, hardwood courts for basketball and volleyball, a swimming pool and an exercise and weight room, is adjacent to TRU’s campus. Memberships are reduced for students to just $27.50 a month.

When you’re not in class or studying, keep moving — whether it’s on or off campus

PLENTY OF OFF-CAMPUS OPTIONS Riverside Park Located next to the Interior Savings Centre and just minutes from downtown, Riverside Park is a favourite amongst TRU students. Perfect for a swim, stroll or group hangout. McArthur Island Park Located on the North Shore of the Thompson River, McArthur Island Park is perfect for nature walks, getting a run in or bringing down some friends for a football, soccer, baseball or tennis game. It’s also home to two ice rinks and a curling club.

Go play intramurals Campus Recreation organizes a variety of non-competitive, leisure team sports in the TRU Gym every week. You can be a captain and create your own team, join an existing team or simply join as a free agent.

Kamloops Y With two locations — one downtown and another on the North Shore — the Kamloops Y is an affordable way to stay in shape. Both locations feature full workout facilities, and the downtown Y has a swimming pool. There are a number of other off-campus options for students looking to stay in shape, as well, including private gyms, yoga studios and dance facilities. Do some research of your own to find the right fit for you.

It’s a great opportunity to play a sport you already love or try something new — and a perfect way to meet new friends. Soccer, floor hockey, volleyball and basketball are available — just pick a sport and then check out rec.inside. tru.ca/intramurals for more information on how to get started.

There’s no shortage of sports in Canada’s Tournament Capital

If you like sports, you’ll like what Kamloops has to offer — whether the action is on campus or off. The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack fields varsity teams that compete in the highest level of Canadian university sports in men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, as well as soccer, hockey, baseball, curling, golf, cheerleading, badminton and cross-country squads. For schedules, rosters and more information about your WolfPack, go online to tru.ca/athletics/teams.html. Off campus, the Kamloops Blazers are the premiere sports ticket in the Tournament Capital. Competing in the Western Hockey League, the Blazers have a rich history that includes three Memorial Cup titles and an alumni list featuring names like Jarome Iginla, Mark Recchi and Scott Niedermayer. The WHL season begins in September and playoffs run into the spring. For more information, go online to blazerhockey.com. There’s plenty of other exciting sporting action in Kamloops, too, including the junior B Kamloops Storm hockey team and the B.C. Football Conference’s Kamloops Broncos, as well as dozens of highly competitive amateur teams in various sports.

residing in residence Living on campus is great. Let’s be honest — who doesn’t hit the snooze button on their alarm at least a few times each morning? Being five minutes away from class definitely has its advantages. As well, by living in residence you have the opportunity to meet and make friends with tons of other TRU students. A couple of helpful tips to remember if you’re making residence your new home in the fall: • Move in early in the morning and make sure you are well fed. Bring a dolly or cart to help move your things. Moving can be tiring and there will be hundreds of other students trying to do the same thing so being early and prepared can help make things much easier on you and your parents. • Attend your floor and building Meetings! This is the best way to meet your new neighbours and floor-mates and to learn more about what it’s going to be like living in residence. • There’s a ton of free events going on

throughout the year (many that involve food!). Your resident advisors (RAs) or Residence Council floor rep will be looking for input on what events you want to see go on in residence, so if you have an idea, let them know! • Get involved! It can be the best way to meet new friends and have a say about what goes on in the community. The residence council is always accepting new members and if you just want help out

with a couple events, just ask your RA. • Talk to your new roommate about what’s cool and what’s not cool with you right away. The most common roommate conflicts can be avoided with a straightforward conversation and setting some ground rules about how you want to get along living in the same space. For more information on rates, the facilities and how to apply, go online to trurez.ca.

student perks When you’re a student, you know how important it is to budget. In Kamloops, there are dozens of businesses that understand the needs and limited funds of those in school. A Facebook page called The Frugal Student has been created to allow students and community members to share public events, freebies and student discounts at Thompson Rivers University and in the Kamloops community. Go online to check it out at facebook.com/ TheFrugalStudent. TRUSU offers discounted tickets to Kamloops Blazers home games — available for purchase on campus right at the TRUSU members’ services desk in the Campus Activity Centre. Finally, the student price card (SPC) provides students with a wide variety of savings on everything from clothing, food, lifestyle and more. Hundreds of business across Canada — including many right here in Kamloops — recognize SPC. For more information, and to sign up for the card, go online to spccard.ca. As well, by using the Deal Finder application on the website you’ll be able to find out which Kamloops businesses offer discounts and what those discounts are.

rights and responsibilities As a student, you should know what your rights are as well as your responsibilities. The TRU calendar is the place to find all the information you need regarding attendance requirements and general student information. From academic integrity — those two familiar sheets of paper you’ll get on the back of every syllabus this year — to Greek organizations and even examination requirements, the TRU calendar and website (tru.ca) hosts all essential policies and procedures. In the end, you will get as much from your postsecondary experience as you put into it. Hard work, dedication and a willingness to go that extra mile will help you reach your goals. So, before you embark on this semester and the ones to follow, sit back and think — what do I want from this term and what are the steps I have to take to achieve my goals? TRU has the resources to help and you have the ambition to make it happen. Make this year your best year yet. SENIORS, STUDENT & CHILD DISCOUNTS
