THE TOURNAMENT CAPITAL IS
COOKING Stock up on napkins and plan your appetite now as a delicious summer is on its way to Kamloops. Ribfest makes its return to Riverside Park in August following last summer’s inaugural edition, which blew away the expectations of even the most-optimistic prognosticators. Based on its success, don’t be surprised if the world eating championships one day sets its dinner table right here in Kamloops. It would, of course, fit in with that for which we are known across North America — being Canada’s Tournament Capital. It’s not only sports — with the plethora of fields, tracks, ice, hills, pools, lakes and just about anything else related to competitions — that is part of the Tournament Capital recipe. It is also cultural and recreational conferences of all types that bring to Kamloops a diverse cross-section of visitors. The city’s vast, rugged landscape provides the perfect setting for those looking to explore by hiking, mountain biking and wildlife viewing. This year, Kamloops will host the 2013 BC Seniors’ Games, which follows on the heels of the city hosting the massive Western Canada Summer Games in 2011. This year should be as busy as 2012. With 110 events and 25,843 participants, the Tournament Capital Program in 2012 had an economic impact of $11,395,750, according to the city, not factoring in eventhosting costs. Most notable in 2012 were the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association Soccer Cup and the Kamloops Invitational Soccer Tournament, both of which generated about $1.75 million and brought more than 4,000 visitors to Kamloops. The city also hosted the Slo Pitch Provincials at the new Tournament Capital Ranch in Rayleigh, an event that added $675,000 to city coffers. As well, the B.C. Lions continue to call Kamloops home for their June training camp.
The Canadian Football League team, along with last year’s visit by the Team China National Short Track Speed Skating program, pumped close to $500,000 into the local economy. In this indispensable resource we call the Kamloops Vacation Guide 2013, you will find exciting and unique-toKamloops ways to discover the area — sports- and non-sportsrelated With more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually, you’ll want to get outdoors to enjoy the beautiful weather — and you don’t need to be a high-calibre athlete to do so. Fast-paced and thrilling adventure exists for those with a desire to burn some energy. Explore the endless network of single-track trails on a mountain bike or plunge down the rapids while whitewater rafting. Slow things down by hiking in the sagebrush-dotted hills, golfing on many of the championship courses or visiting one of the numerous city pools. For more of a leisurely paced adventure, check out the downtown core. With its cobblestone sidewalks, restored heritage buildings, grand shade trees, museum, library and art galleries, downtown Kamloops offers an exciting ambiance for all. The streets are lined with sidewalk cafés and eclectic restaurants and events are plentiful. Take in farmers’ markets downtown and in North Kamloops, the Hot Nite in the City car show, Music in the Park, Bizarre Bazaar, theatre and movies in the parks and other exciting festivals and events. Elsewhere in this publication, learn about the history of Kamloops and the region. Whether you are a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, keep this guide as your personal road map for exploring Kamloops and the area. We invite you to let loose and just play!

River City a hot destination
K
AMLOOPSIANS ARE PROUD OF THEIR CITY AND WILL SHOW IT OFF AS OFTEN AS THEY CAN. Kamloops is the second-largest city in the Interior of British Columbia, home to 86,500 residents. Accessible by three major B.C. highways, the city is among the warmest in Canada and boasts world-class sporting facilities and recreational experiences. The city is affordable and visitors and residents can enjoy some inexpensive getaways, such as golf or skiing from about $89 per day. Here are some reasons to enjoy Kamloops: • Warmest summers: Average temperature of 27.2 C from June to August. • Most parks: The area is home to 84 parks, which puts it at the top of the list for all of B.C. • Kamloops’ mild, dry four-season climate means visitors can enjoy summer and winter activities. • The Tournament Capital gets 2,000 hours of sunshine per year and only 270 millimetres of rain. • The average snowfall is 86 centimetres (33.86 inches) in the city area and up to 559 centimetres (17 feet) at nearby Sun Peaks, Canada’s third-largest ski resort. • Usually, the city ranks No. 1 in Canada for hottest
summers, No. 2 for warmest springs, driest city and most sunny days in warm months, 11th for warmest year-round, 13th for mildest winter and 14th for most sunny days.
Central location Kamloops is located right in the heart of British Columbia’s Interior and is accessible by train, plane and automobile. From Kamloops, it is a 3.5-hour drive to Vancouver, six hours to Calgary and eight hours to Edmonton. Air Canada Jazz, WestJet and Central Mountain Airlines service the city, taking people anywhere from the Coast to Prince George to Calgary — all of which open up the world to travellers. The Rocky Mountaineer Railtour and VIA Rail trains make stops in the city.
Meetings/conventions Kamloops is becoming a choice destination for organizations holding major conferences. The city offers 16 convention facilities, ranging in size from 816 square feet to more than 48,000 square feet. X See SPORTS Page 6

8 ❖ 2013 Vacation Guide
Kamloops This Week
Rivers run through it With more than 1,000 lakes and three rivers running through the Kamloops region, the only problem a canoe or kayak enthusiast will have is deciding on which stretch of water to spend the day. For a leisurely paddle, try one of the 200 lakes within an hour’s drive of Kamloops or the smooth waters of the South Thompson River, which are sure to please. For the more adventurous out there, the Thompson, Adams and Clearwater rivers ensure whitewater spills and thrills. If you’re looking for a true wilderness experience, try an overnight trip in Wells Gray Park. Following are a few suggestions:
Located in Wells Gray Provincial Park, the Clearwater-Azure Lakes is an easy circuit trip suitable for novice and intermediate paddlers. This 96kilometre return trip will take about four or five days. Camping is allowed at designated sites only. This is a nice, safe paddling trip, but stay close to shore and watch for storm squalls and winds. Directions: The boat launch is at the south end of Clearwater Lake, 71 kilometres from Highway 5. The road is paved for 43 kilometres, with a further 28 kilometres of well-maintained gravel road leading to the boat launch.
South Thompson River
The mighty river
The South Thompson River has a gentle current, carrying you toward the downtown core and on to scenic Kamloops Lake. Great views of the Thompson Valley, wildlife and, if you time it right, an unbelievable smooth ride on the glass-like surface awaits. Directions: You can access the South Thompson River from Pioneer Park, located off Lorne Street in downtown Kamloops.
Clearwater-Azure
“At the town of Clearwater, the North Thompson River is joined by one of the most spectacular tributaries of the Fraser system. Clearwater River is the culmination of an incredible concentration of waterfalls, rapids and chutes, probably the greatest in B.C. It is a world of whitewater and blue lakes protected by one of the province’s largest and finest parks, Wells Gray.” Excerpt from The Mighty River by Richard Bocking

THE ADAMS RIVER
Experience best when riding at Stake, Inks lakes Located 25 minutes south of Kamloops, these 45 kilometres of marked trails are great for family rides. Inks Lake is also a popular riding area with locals and visitors and is suitable for more-experienced riders. Directions to Stake Lake: Take Exit 366 from Highway 1/Highway 5 in Kamloops and follow Lac Le Jeune Road south. Park near Stake Lake. Trails are to your right. Directions to Inks Lake: Take Exit 355 on the Coquihalla Highway, 10 minutes from Kamloops, or take Lac Le Jeune Road.
Nestled in the trees between Adams and Shuswap Lakes lies this pristine river which is fully protected within the boundaries of Roderick-Haig Brown Provincial Park. Haig-Brown, an avid fisherman and conservationist, had the foresight to protect this valuable but fragile resource. The Pacific Sockeye Salmon industry depends heavily on the Adams River, as it has the largest Sockeye spawning population in the world. Heavy use of the river for transporting logs was decimating the salmon stocks. Thanks to conservation efforts the Sockeye return every fall to spawn; most prevalent every four years when the river teems with over 2 million red colored fish.

The Adams River is also a wonderful playground for whitewater enthusiasts. Keep in mind though, that while the many sweepers and logjams are ideal for spawning beds, they pose a dangerous hazard to the inexperienced. The class II and III rapids offer great fun for kayakers and rafters. In summer the water is warm and inviting. The nozzle like “Gorge” is always a rush! For family adventure don’t miss an Adams River raft trip. Looking for more excitement? Adams River Rafting, Canada’s original cataraft company, offers trips with their exclusive pontoon style catarafts. Adams River Rafting has been operating since1983.

Ribfest cooking up a storm in Riverside Park Last summer’s inaugural Ribfest raised $30,000 for Kamloops charities. The three-day event took place in August 2012 in Riverside Park, featuring five cooking teams and attracting thousands of hungry spectators-turned-eaters.
Ribfest was organized by the Daybreak Rotary Club of Kamloops and sponsored by Interior Savings Credit Union. “We’re so thrilled with the response to Ribfest by our community,” said event co-chair Darren Wilkinson. X See Page 21

Ribfest 2013 will run the same dates as last year’s event — Aug. 9 to Aug. 11. “We had an incredible turnout and the vibe at Riverside Park, with thousands of the people in attendance, made us realize we had developed a signature event for our awesome city,” Wilkinson said. “The five champion ribbers who have done ribfests throughout North America were impressed with the event,” said co-organizer Sandra Blair. “The ribbers couldn’t believe the turnout and that Kamloops could host an event that was even more of a success than large city centres. “Needless to say, we’re extremely pleased with the entire event.”

Learn while having fun at the Big Little Science Centre “Science is a verb!” So says award winning educator Gordon Gore. Through interactive fun experiences, science becomes meaningful and less mysterious. Big Little Science Centre is here to provide a place for people to have such experiences. Gore, along with the Big Little Science Centre Society (a Kamloops-based non-profit society and registered charity), developed Kamloops’ very own unique science centre in 2000. Started from the back of a car, the Big Little Science Centre progressed to one room in a school and has increased in size over several moves. Open for public visits year-round, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., science fun includes more than 140 interactive science exhibits, regular shows and events, science birthday parties, summer camps, robotics programs and clubs. Teachers are encouraged to bring their students during regular school hours for shows, labs and hands-on educational fun. A great place for hours of entertainment and learning, the Big Little Science Centre has something for everyone. Adults have as much fun exploring and experimenting as the children. With ever-changing science adventure, the shows and activities bring families back again and again. But fun science doesn’t have to happen only at Big Little
Science Centre. Many resources are available to encourage and assist children and families with science exploration at home or in the class. The Big Little Science Centre website (blscs.org) has links to many fun science sites. As well, past issues of BIGScience are located on the website; this is the Big Little Science Centre newsletter filled with science articles and activities to discover. Science is meant to be experienced. The staff and volunteers of Big Little Science Centre encourage everyone to explore fun science in the world around you.

A golden nugget of history While touring spectacular Gold Country, the one attraction you don’t want to miss is the Historic Hat Creek Ranch, just north of Cache Creek at the junction of highways 97 and 99. This site offers something for everyone. Historic Hat Creek Ranch invites visitors of all ages to experience the rich history of ranching, aboriginal culture and the Cariboo Gold Rush. Take a guided tour of the 1861 roadhouse, once a famous stopping point for gold seekers and travellers on their way to Barkerville. Hear the tale of the infamous Wild McLeans, whose father, Donald, built the original roadhouse. Ride the stagecoach along one of the few sections of the original Cariboo Wagon Road still accessible to the public. Take a short walk along beautiful Hat Creek to learn about the fascinating traditions and culture of the Shuswap First Nations people at the native interpretation site, with its many displays and artifacts, including the pit house, which is built half underground. The visitor reception centre houses a licensed restaurant serving home-cooked meals, freshly baked goodies and tasty snacks, as well as a gift store stocked with unique souvenirs, locally made crafts and keepsakes from the Gold

Country region. The ranch is proud to host a variety of events throughout the season, including the draft-horse demonstration in June, the Trappers’ Rendezvous and the Traditional Bonaparte Pow Wow in August. There is no better place to truly experience the birth of British Columbia’s Interior. The ranch is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (6 p.m. in July and August) from May 1 to Sept. 30.
Located a short and scenic 35-minutes drive southwest from Kamloops adjacent to the Logan Lake Municipal campground, the Meadow Creek Golf Course is a hidden gem that offers a challenging layout amid ruggedly natural charm and stunning views. Meadow Creek can be played as a 3,091-yard nine-hole course or as a 6,160-yard 18-hole track. Come tee off only one kilometre from Logan Lake, just off the Coquihalla Highway and down Highway 97D.

Time for tee Kamloops is rapidly becoming the No. 1 destination for golfers in B.C. It used to be the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley and Okanagan were the hot spots but, with 10 top-class courses in the area, Kamloops is certainly the place to be. Some of the world’s most-famous golf architects — Robert Trent Jones Sr., Graham Cooke and Robert Heaslip — have designed courses here. From Tobiano, Talking Rock, Rivershore Golf Estates and The Dunes at Kamloops to Sun Rivers, Sun Peaks, Kamloops Golf and Country Club, Eaglepoint Golf Resort, Mount Paul and Pineridge, golfers have an amazing array of courses from which to choose. With prices ranging at about $65 a round, the game is also affordable, especially since greens fees are at least double in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. An added bonus is golfkamloops.com. This is a service that takes the legwork out of booking at several area courses. This online tee-times service books everything from greens fees to hotels to restaurants.

Shooting some rapids In Kamloops, people can take a water-rafting trip suited to their interests — extreme, casual or novice. Take a motorized-raft trip or enjoy a paddle trip and really get involved with the river. It depends on how much excitement someone wants. There are three rivers to raft in Kamloops Country — the Thompson, Adams and Clearwater. A variety of companies, some with 20 years or more experience, spend six months a year guiding rafters of all skill levels.
Thompson River Those who want to experience the Thompson usually start at Spences Bridge and end at Lytton, the Rafting Capital of Canada. Guide your raft through rapids with names like the Frog, the Devil’s Kitchen and the Jaws of Death.
Adams River The Adams, near Shuswap Lake, is a wonderful starting point for both first-timers and experienced rafters. The Weir, the Ender Waves and especially the Gorge, where the river spills through a narrow canyon, are breathtaking.
Clearwater River Rush down the Clearwater in Wells Gray Park, past volcanoes, lava rock formations, lush forests and spectacular waterfalls. The region is an unspoiled wilderness and is one of the best-kept secrets in B.C.

It’s all about the music Canada Day marks the first big celebration of summer in Riverside Park — but it also signals the kickoff of Music in the Park. The annual summer event Henry Small has been putting together for longer than he can remember sees a different performer or band on the Rotary Bandshell in the park every night. On the other side of the river, there’s a smaller version, with music in McDonald Park every Friday night. It seems like such an easy thing — book a musician, make sure he or she shows up and performs — but it’s something Small spends months putting together. Music lovers benefit as he brings in groups from literally around the world, as well as spotlighting local and provincial talent. The complete lineup will soon be posted on the city’s website at kamloops.ca/events/calendar.php.

Roots & Blues in its 21st year in Salmon Arm Now in its 21st year, the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival is the largest and most musically diverse festival in the B.C. Interior. The festival began in 1992 as a small indoor festival, the result of the grassroots Shuswap Coffee House collective of the 1970s and 1980s, which by 1991 had coalesced into the not-for-profit Salmon Arm Folk Music Society. The main goals of the society are to encourage and promote performers from all parts of the world (with a special emphasis on Canadian talent) and to introduce audiences to the world’s incredibly diverse genres of music, musical instruments and the artists who play them. The festival takes place on the third weekend of every August at the fairgrounds in the heart of Salmon Arm, B.C, about an hour east of Kamloops Set beneath the panoramic splendor of Mt. Ida and the Fly Hills with lovely Shuswap Lake nearby, Roots and Blues is known as a diverse multi-genre festival. At night, two stages run concurrently. Main Stage is at one end of the grounds and is where you can catch the headlining acts, which this year include Bruce Cockburn, City and Colour, Daniel Lanois, Ky-Mani Marley and more. The dynamic Boogie Barn Stage lies at the other end, pumping out live beats for the dancers in the crowd. The festival is a sonic and visual sampler serving up an unforgettable experience. Roots & Blues is family friendly with a Family Fun Zone offering loads of things for kids to see and do, including a Family Stage with a line-up geared towards children. Kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge. It’s a great place to come together in celebration with family and friends.
