WOMEN WENT FROM BOOT CAMP TO BUSINESS OWNERS
T
he moment health care and education changed overnight during the COVID-19 pandemic led some people to look at changing or tweaking careers for wellness and financial reasons. Foxy Box co-owners Stephanie O’Neill and Whitney Learie-Kellam took a risk on building a franchise, starting with a 10-week Community Futures business bootcamp to draft a business plan, learn about business start-up tools and plan financials. Earlier this year, the duo celebrated the one-year anniversary of their Foxy Box storefront, downtown at 259 Fourth Ave. It is Kamloops’ first full-body laser and wax bar and is part of a Victoria-based franchise that is woman-owned and operated. Community Futures business advisor Carmen Jordan helped O’Neill and Learie-Kellam to evaluate ideas and move forward with a business plan, with new business sponsorship from RBC. “The runway was a bit longer for them,” Jordan said, noting the franchise was complex to launch and required finding a specific location within their contract. “They’re very smart women and they balance each other beautifully,” said Julie Bayman, Community Futures project manager for the self-employment program, noting both women hold professional careers and have successfully made the leap to be entrepreneurs. O’Neill has worked full-time as a respiratory therapist for nine years and transitioned into part-time employment at the height of the pandemic. “COVID just had a really strong impact on me, partly because of the kind of person I am,” O’Neill said, noting she took stress leave to cope with some of the impacts of the crisis. “I’m a very empathetic person and my heart really hurt seeing what families went through and having to manage being a mother and a partner at home. So,

when this opportunity came around to meet like-minded women and other entrepreneurs, and the positive vibe of feeling included in something transformative for the community, it really woke my spirit up again. I just had this awakening to do something different.” Learie-Kellam is a primary school teacher with several years of work experience and she was on maternity leave when she and O’Neill celebrated Foxy Box’s oneyear anniversary. “I still love being a teacher and I love the kids, but I started to have my own family,” Learie-Kellam said. With a dedication to their professional lives in health care and education still strongly intact, the Foxy Box franchise has been embraced in the downtown business community. “What drew us to Foxy Box in particular was the core values of the company, the inclusivity, the honesty and the humour,” Learie-Kellam said. “These things really spoke to us in cultivating a positive environment for our staff, our clients … we can bring people joy and make them feel good in their bodies. That piece is the piece that spoke to us.” While still a young business, Foxy Box has hosted fundraisers for the Kamloops Food Bank and The Tree (an organization that helps women and mothers dealing with addictions issues). The Foxy Box has also helped raise money for a family with medical expenses and for doula care in Kamloops during International Women’s Week. “We’re not just a wax and laser bar. We do a ton of community work and we want to give back to our community because we love Kamloops and we love living here,” Learie-Kellam said. “I feel like that’s reciprocal. People have really received us well.” For more information on Community Futures, go online to communityfutures.net.

CREATE A GREATER WORK/LIFE BALANCE A
more even balance between professional and personal life is a goal for many people. The demands of work too often extend beyond traditional working hours, leaving many professionals to confront workrelated challenges long after they have left the office or left the desks in their home offices. With work never more than a smartphone notification away, it can be hard to create and maintain work-life balance. Work-life balance is rarely discussed in terms of overall health, but that could be a mistake. Studies show that when workers’ lives are balanced and workers are happy, they are more productive, take fewer sick days and are more likely to remain in their jobs. Each of those things benefits workers and employers equally.
With so much to gain from creating a greater balance between work and life, professionals can consider these tips to do just that: • Make a concerted effort to be an effective communicator as open and effective communication can be a great way to solve work-related problems. Remain calm and suggest practical alternatives when confronting such issues. Simply accepting more work or responsibilities when you already feel overwhelmed can tip the scales even further away from an even work-life balance. • Establish manageable daily goals: Research has found that people feel less stressed about work when they feel as though they have more control over it. Setting daily goals is a great way to achieve that sense of control and this can be as simple as creating a daily to-do list. • Seek alternatives to your working arrangement: Previously unthinkable working arrangements are now possible after companies were forced to confront pandemic-related changes to their operations. If you’ve found it impossible to create an equitable balance between work and life, speak with your supervisor about alternatives to your arrangement. Flex time and hybrid working are some measures that could ensure you have as much time for your personal life as your professional life. • Unplug at the end of the workday: One of the simpler, though not necessarily easier, ways to create and maintain a greater work-life balance is to unplug at the end of the workday. Turn off work-related smartphone notifications at the end of the work day so you aren’t tempted to work during those times of day that you have earmarked for your personal life. Smartphones can be addictive, so unplugging could test your resilience. If possible, block work-related notifications automatically after a certain time each day so you don’t have to turn them off manually. Once the blocking is automated, you might not think twice about all those missed emails.

EXERCISE IDEAS FOR BUSY WOMEN
P
hysical activity is important for personal health. However, many women do not get the recommended levels of exercise. Physical activity has immediate health benefits, such as reducing anxiety and blood pressure. That is just one reason why adults should aspire to get between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. Such activities should be paired with muscle-

strengthening activities at least two days a week. Busy women may argue they simply do not have enough time to exercise. Parental responsibilities, work obligations, long commutes and school can get in the way of exercise. However, if people study their days, there are likely plenty of ways to incorporate exercise into the busiest of schedules without making large changes. Here are some suggestions: • Take the stairs: Skipping the escalator or elevator and taking the stairs doesn’t require much time, but pays great dividends for your overall health. It guarantees a mini-workout each day, particularly if you work in a multistorey office building or home. • Walk more often: Walking requires no specialized equipment and is good for the body. Instead of sending that email to a coworker, get up and walk to his desk. Rather than hopping in the car to go to the store up the street, put on your sneakers and walk there. If you drive to a store or appointment, park the car far away from the entrance and walk farther to get to and from the door. Take it up a notch when you are in areas of Kamloops with hills and tackle the incline. • Change your perception of exercise: Physical activity need not be limited to the gym or running around the neighbourhood. Exercise can involve a half-hour dance session with the kids or walking around the park with the dog. When you make exercise about fun activities, you may be more inclined to do it regularly. • Carry those shopping bags: Single-use plastic shopping bags are now prohibited in Kamloops. This means shoppers have to bring in their own reusable totes. Use this to your advantage by passing up the shopping cart and filling the totes with items, lifting and flexing your arms as you go. It’s a small strength workout every time you shop. • Exercise while sitting: You can fit in a little exercise even if you’re chilling out watching a movie or doing your remote work in your home office. Keep a lightweight dumbbell nearby and do a few bicep and triceps curls or invest in a portable cycling device to stow under the desk and clock miles that way.

Supportive Options & Solutions During Nellie Krombach’s 30 years in the Social Services field, her work with special needs clients and their families naturally led to suggesting they apply for the Disability Tax Credit. Unfortunately, they would often apply and be denied over and over. Nellie started her own research study to discover what factors determined an applicant’s success or denial. Nellie discovered many people qualified and were not receiving refunds owed to them. People with Arthritis, IBS, Diabetes, etc., were all unaware they were eligible. In 2011 Nellie became a Disability Tax Credit Specialist, which allowed her to assist her clients and their medical professionals to submit successful applications.
