The study will provide a foundational overview by documenting and describing the farm-to- feedlot pathways currently being utilized by Minnesota beef producers. The survey is the first step in a larger effort involving a collaboration between the UMN College of Veterinary Medicine, MN Beef Council, and UMN Extension. The survey is available online and should take producers approximately 5-10 minutes to fi nish.
Survey results and responses are completely voluntary and confidential. The survey is available at z.umn. edu/beefpathways starting August 24, 2020. Participants will have the option to be entered into a raffle using an email address that will give away a Pierce VAXmate cooler. Champion for Children and Youth Mora United Methodist Church is seeking a Christian who has a passion for youth to develop and coordinate a Christ-centered ministry that nurtures a rich spiritual life for children and youth in our community. In coordination with church leadership this person will be a role model and mentor while creating opportunities for children and youth to meet, fellowship and develop relationships with other Christian youth through learning, activities and events.
5:15 PM and the rental property owner’s meeting will follow at 6:00 PM. Those attending will learn about program eligibility requirements, the application process and construction steps. Applications will be available for the first time and funding is awarded on a first come, first serve basis,” said Owings. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) awarded funding in June to the City of Mora. A total of $393,300 was awarded to complete a minimum of six homeowner projects and four single family rentals, two duplex projects and eight multifamily units. The award also covers the cost of administration for the term of the grant. Questions about the SCDP can be directed to Messina Owings, Central Minnesota Housing Partnership, Inc. Understanding Probate & Non-Probate Assets A common misconception is that probate applies to all of the assets you leave when you die. However, probate handles only your probate assets. With that said, we must first understand what a probate asset is and what a non-probate asset is. In a general sense, probate assets are those assets owned by you alone at the time of your death. Probate assets include those assets without any beneficiary designations. Nonprobate assets are those assets that are owned jointly with others or have a beneficiary designation on them. Non-probate assets are passed automatically upon your death to those named as beneficiaries or those who you jointly own the assets with. A good example of a non-probate asset is life insurance. Most life insurance policies name a specific beneficiary who is to receive the life insurance proceeds upon your death. However, if the life insurance policy does not contain a named beneficiary, the life insurance policy will be deemed to be a probate asset. A typical probate asset is a parcel of real estate that is owned by only a single person. In such a case, the real estate must pass through probate in order to be distributed to your heirs. Why is it important to understand the difference between probate and non-probate assets? Not recognizing this important distinction could result in an unintended distribution. We have seen many cases where an individual’s Last Will & Testament states that the assets should be distributed to one person, but a beneficiary designation on the asset says something completely different. In this case, the beneficiary designation trumps the individual’s Will. Bottom line, this means that your Will has absolutely no effect on the distribution of non-probate assets.

The youth firearms deer season will be held statewide Oct. 15-18. Participant numbers are not limited and there is no special permit. Resident and nonresident youth are eligible. NOTE: Hunting of all protected species is prohibited. All dates are subject to change through a rule making or legislative process. Visit dnr.state.mn.us for updates.
Hunter safety is a top priority. Blaze clothing has been found to be one factor that has helped make hunting one of the safest outdoor activities.
Exceptions during a firearms/muzzleloader deer season
All hunters and trappers in the field during the open firearms/muzzleloader deer seasons must display blaze orange or blaze pink on the visible portion of the person’s cap and outer clothing above the waist, excluding sleeves and gloves.
• Hunting migratory waterfowl while on the water or in a stationary location
When no firearms/muzzleloader deer season is open, a person may not take small game unless the visible portion of at least one article of clothing above the waist is blaze orange or blaze pink. See exceptions noted below. Blaze orange or blaze pink camouflage patterns are allowed and must be at least 50 percent blaze orange or pink within each square foot.
• Area open only to archery hunting (no firearms hunting allowed)
• Trapping while on the water Exceptions when no firearms/muzzleloader deer season is open • Taking small game while archery deer hunting in a stationary location • Hunting turkey • Hunting birds
migratory
• Hunting raccoons and predators (coyote, fox, bobcat) • Trapping furbearers • Hunting small game by falconry • Hunting bear
Did you know? Hunting enthusiasts anxiously look forward to the first day of hunting season, a date chosen after local gaming authorities carefully consider a host of factors. Conservation of both game and the hobby hunters love so much are two of the driving forces
that determine when hunting seasons begin. Local gaming authorities want to protect wildlife from overhunting, and they also want to ensure hunters won’t have to confront dwindling animal populations that will affect their hunting. Estimates of local animal populations are one of the main factors gaming authorities consider when trying to figure out the best time to start a hunting season. If local
authorities deem that the animal population is too large, thereby adversely affecting local residents, they will time hunting season in such a way as to give hunters an advantage. This can help control local wildlife populations and make communities safer. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if population estimates are especially low, authorities will time hunting season so fewer animals are likely to be killed.
We carry all hunting accessories.
These efforts at managing local animal populations can benefit hunters, animals and even local residents who don’t participate when hunting season begins.

Safety measures all hunters should take
New for 2020 Pandemic awareness As part of the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DNR is making adjustments to events, operations and service, including management of hunting seasons. While a number of adjustments have already been made, further changes may be necessary. Prior to participating in the fall 2020 hunting season, hunters should refer to the DNR’s COVID-19 response web page at www.mndnr. gov/covid-19 for the latest information on fall hunting regulations. As of July, the following pandemic-related changes to hunting regulations are expected: • CWD sample submission for deer hunters is voluntary in areas affected by Chronic Wasting Disease. Although voluntary, hunter participation continues to be critical for tracking disease activity and potential spread. • Youth special archery hunts at Camp Ripley and Lake Alexander Park Reserve have been cancelled. • There is no longer a lottery for the Camp Ripley Archery Hunt. Permits went on sale Aug. 28 and must be purchased by Oct 2. They may be purchased online, or wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold.
strictions are temporarily cancelled for 2020 statewide. The definition of a legal buck has not changed. Party-hunting (also known as cross-tagging) for antlered bucks is allowed statewide. The early antlerless deer season has been expanded to include more deer permit areas. Permit area boundary changes: Changes to permit area boundaries are depicted on the 2020 Deer Season Area Map. For precise detail visit our online interactive deer map at www.mndnr.gov/hunting/deer/ map.html. Furbearer/small game Beginning Oct. 1, snares capable of taking a wild animal must include a breakaway device that causes the snare loop to disassemble at 350 pounds pull or less. The bag limit for sandhill crane (Northwest Zone only) was increased. Using drones or wireless devices: Can I use a drone when hunting?
The ban on deer feeding and the use of deer attractants has been expanded.
Drones cannot be used to take big game or small game. It is also illegal to harass hunters, trappers or anglers with a drone. No person may use aircraft over a WMA in a manner that chases, herds, scares, or otherwise disturbs wildlife, except in emergencies or by authorization of the wildlife manager. Drones may not be flown over wildlife management areas.
Due to the expansion of the CWD Management Zones, antler point re-
Can I use wireless devices to take game?
Deer Special CWD regulations, including voluntary, self-service sampling, and carcass movement restrictions are in effect.
No. Using walkie talkies, cell phones, remote control or other radio equipment, including drones, to take big game or small game is unlawful. A person may use radio equipment without a permit to take unprotected wild animals. Dog training collars are allowed. Motorized decoys controlled by remote may be used for taking migratory waterfowl or mourning doves where allowed. A remote controlled animal noise caller can be used for crows, furbearing animals and unprotected animals. Unattended electronic devices may not be used for taking wild animals. Youth firearms safety training requirements
The DNR has modified firearms safety certification requirements on an interim basis as a result of COVID-19. Both in-person classroom training and in-person field days are postponed until further notice. Students of all ages may take their classroom training online. Students age 14 and older may also complete a virtual field day instead of the traditional in-person field day by signing up for and completing the online hunter safety course at https://www.dnr.state. mn.us/safety/index.html. Students ages 12 and 13 who want to hunt this fall but are unable to complete their in-person field day are encouraged to use the apprentice hunter validation.
Hunting requires discipline, dedication, patience, and, perhaps most important, a commitment to safety. By prioritizing safety on each hunting trip, seasoned and novice hunters alike are acknowledging the potential dangers of this beloved outdoor activity while doing everything they can to ensure the trip is as safe as possible. · Treat all firearms as if they’re loaded. Treating all firearms as if they’re loaded ensures hunters won’t be tempted to engage in the kind of fooling around that can contribute to tragic accidents. This approach can reduce the risk of firearm-related accidents or injuries, and can be an especially effective way to teach youngsters about the dangers of firearms and the correct ways to mitigate those dangers. · Keep your finger off the trigger and only point at what you plan to shoot. Keeping your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot ensures you won’t accidentally discharge your firearm. In addition, never point your firearm at anything other than what you plan to shoot. · Know the forecast and dress appropriately. Firearms are not the only risk to hunters’ safety. Inclement weather can put hunters at the mercy of Mother Nature. According to the
Mayo Clinic, hypothermia, which occurs when the human body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, can affect hunters who are unable to get out of wet clothes or move to warm, dry locations as their bodies lose heat. In addition, hunters may be at risk of hypothermia even if temperatures are hovering around 50 F. Before embarking on a hunting trip, hunters should read the forecast of the areas where they will be hunting and dress accordingly. Outer layers that repel water can help keep hunters dry, and hunters also should avoid wearing cotton, which retains moisture and can increase their risk for hypothermia. Clothing made with moisture-wicking fabrics is a great alternative to cotton. · Share your plan with others. Returning home safe is the ultimate goal for hunters, and that’s more likely to happen when hunters share their hunting plans with others. Let someone, ideally a spouse, parent, roommate, or sibling, know when and where you will be hunting and when you expect to return by. Direct this loved one to call the local authorities if you do not call by a predetermined time. This can dramatically reduce the time it takes to find you if you become injured or lost.

No 2020 Moose Season There will be no state moose season in 2020. More information is available online at www.mndnr. gov/moose. Tribal moose seasons may be open in some areas. For the ninth year in a row, Minnesota’s moose population of 2,400-4,320 animals remains stable. The stability itself is good news but it does not serve as evidence for either a turnaround or a continued decline in the population of Minnesota’s most iconic northwoods animal.

Pathogen contamination is one of the biggest risks when field dressing an animal. As with any animal, game can contain harmful bacteria, such as salmonella and strains of E. coli. Other animals, such as wild hogs, can infect people with a flu-like illness called brucellosis, which can be caught through contact with blood, fluid or tissue of an infected hog. Deer, elk and moose also may have chronic wasting disease, or CWD. Although there is no evidence that links CWD to human illness, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises caution. · Wear safety gear. When handling any game animals, protect yourself with rubber gloves. This will prevent the blood and fluids from the game animal from getting on your skin. Eye protection is also advised when handling carcasses. · Work quickly. The elapsed time from when
the animal is downed until it is processed can affect the safety and the quality of the meat if it will be consumed, according to Martin Bucknavage, food safety extension associate in the Penn State Department of Food Science. Field dress as soon as possible to ensure rapid loss of the animal’s body heat, to prevent surface bacteria from growing and to preserve the quality of the meat. Eviscerate the animal to help the carcass dissipate heat and remove the internal organs, where spoilage tends to occur more quickly. · Watch out for internal organs. Avoid cutting into internal organs, especially the intestines, where the largest amount of bad bacteria tend to reside. · Chill the carcass. Deterioration will occur more quickly in temperatures greater than 40 F. Therefore, insert plastic bags of ice or snow into the body cavity of the animal to keep
the carcass chilled. Move the carcass into a cooler or refrigerator as soon as possible after field dress.
· Choose tools wisely. Use clean, sharp knives when field dressing and butchering to make it easier to cut through and process the carcass. Use clean water, premoistened wipes or alcohol wipes to clean the knife frequently between cuts to prevent bacterial contamination.
· Hang game by hind legs. Hang the animal by its hind legs with its head down when aging or butchering. This prevents brain and spinal fluids from contacting the meat.
Most importantly during field dress, if any of the internal organs smell or look offensive, or if there is oddly colored discharge, do not consume the meat. Hunters and anglers are advised to learn more about field dress techniques to hone their skills. Speak with local fish and game officials about nearby courses.
