T

hrough my experiences I know firsthand that faith works. Life without faith doesn’t.

For 19 years, even though I attended church, I lived a life separated from God. I was a warm body sitting in a pew with a cold hard heart. Then I moved up my status and became a CEO (Christmas Easter Only). Did my life improve? No! A life without faith put me on the fast track to a slow decay toward death. I became an alcoholic, got addicted to pornography, I was angry all the time and involved in other addictive patterns. I masked all of the internal pain with nice clothes and a smile. I tried everything to get rid of the stuff, but all it did was worsen my pain.

Then in the Navy, God started to work. I had to hit rock bottom first though. All of that pain inside led me to suicide. In that moment of despair I heard a voice say “Go talk with the Navy Chaplain.” He told me I needed a relationship with Jesus. His words hit my heart and for the first time my heart softened. He explained how faith works through a relationship with Jesus. I prayed and accepted Jesus into my life and the transformation began!

I discovered having faith doesn’t stop the problems from happening, but faith helps us get through them. Through faith God gives us grace. That grace gave me the power to overcome and endure job loss, poverty, major loss and grief, single parenting, obesity and more! Currently God’s grace is getting me through a short sale on my home, helping me on my son’s autism journey and gives me the strength to handle the pressures of leading a church. I learned through all of this that God was never mad at me. He’s always been concerned about my being rather than my doing. Basically, He made me into a pastor who understands.

iving Hope Church is a growing multi-generational church filled with real people. We value relationships over programs! A typical Sunday starts with an adult small group at 9 am. Service starts at 10:15 with a blend of contemporary worship and hymns. We take time to pray for needs and respond to God’s leading. Pastor takes us through passages in a way so everyone can learn and discover how they can study the Bible on their own.

People are encountering God and getting healed! Most common testimony we hear from our visitors is how they feel welcome and they sense God touching their heart during the service.

Living Hope is a church where “Kids Love Church”! Each Sunday we have a worship time for kids and a staffed nursery. Many families are blessed through Eggcellent Adventure and other outreaches throughout the year. Wednesday nights our youth meet at Encounter for worship, word and prayer.

The vision of Living Hope is simple: Being Disciples, Being in Community, Building Families, and Being Outreach Minded.

A disciple is a band of people on journey together with Christ at the center while we follow in His steps living obedient lives. We accomplish that by being in small groups together, community meals every third Sunday of the month and meeting for prayer on a regular basis. The first Sunday of the month at 6 pm we have MORE, a place where people can come for prayer, worship, healing and to seek God. Pastor Steve says, “I’ve been called to reach spiritually hungry people, desperate people, and people who have been hurt by the church. Because of those wounds they either don’t attend anywhere or are making slow strides back. I understand. I’ve been there. Church has to be a place where people can come and find healing for their wounds. God is doing just that. Many people are coming to Living Hope and discovering that church can be fun, life changing and a place where they can encounter God’s love. Each week God is removing the labels off peoples’ hearts and minds, and healing their past. For the first time they aren’t feeling shame, guilt or condemnation. They are finding out that church is a place where God and others accept them as they are.

wo organizations in our area that are doing incalculable good for our community are actually two pieces of the same pie. The One More Time Stores of Mora and Isle are the primary revenue generating assets and public faces of the Seven County Senior Federation based in Mora.

If the One More Time stores were just thrift stores, they would be one an incredibly successful example of that. The One More Time stores provide the communities that they serve with a continuous source of quality clothing and household goods at low cost in neat, well-organized stores.

The One More Time stores also are generous in their giving. They provide clothing and goods at no cost to referred families with significant need. The agency is also quick to pitch in with donated goods when disaster strikes; for instance the recent floods in Moose Lake.

The stores accept countless amounts of donated goods and pride themselves on seeing nothing goes to waste. Garments and merchandise that can be sold are made ready for the public and displayed in the stores for sale quickly after being donated. Items not suitable for sale are redirected to missions or repurposed in usable ways so that virtually nothing goes to waste.

Run with nearly 100% volunteer labor, the One More Time stores provide a family environment and a support network for those giving time in the stores. These volunteer positions give many who are past their working years a place where they can contribute with purpose to the heartbeat of the Mora and Isle communities.

A major source of the stores’ volunteers is the local churches that encourage members to volunteer.

The stores have developed a partnership program where they are able to send monthly contributions back to partnering churches from revenue generated at the stores.

All of this good that takes place in the One More Time stores happens above and beyond the goal of generating income to support the work of the Seven County Senior Federation. In large part, because of the revenue generated by One More Time stores, the Seven County Senior Federation is able to accomplish its work in a way that is 100% self-sustaining. That means that the Federation is able to advocate for seniors without being beholden to government funding or private grants in any way.

For forty years, the Seven County Senior Federation has existed to advocate for senior citizens in the communities where it serves. This grassroots organization is devoted to helping its members live lives that are free of fear with dignity, independence and respect.

With over 1,700 members in Kanabec, Aitkin, Carlton, Chisago, Isanti, Mille Lacs and Pine Counties, the Federation diligently executes the objectives set forward by its members at their annual meeting. Every year, specific priorities are set at the state and federal levels as to how the Federation’s resources will be deployed. Often these priorities revolve around the areas of health care, property tax relief, social security and local government aid (LGA).

In addition to advocating for seniors at the state and federal levels, Seven County Senior Federation serves its members by offering assistance with Medicare or Social Security questions, help with tax preparation, member discounts at participating retailers, aid in obtaining affordable prescription drugs, defensive driving courses for those 55+, social events for members, and many other services.

All of this is from a local organization that is 100% financially self-sustaining.

Five Star Auto Sales in Mora became an affiliate of K-Bid online auctions this past February when the owners began to get requests from their clients to sell their items. Today, there are more than 153,000 registered bidders.

“There’s a distinct advantage to online auctions and that is there is an unlimited number of people who can see and bid on your items,” said Auction Manager Kim Johnson.

Kim said they have many bidders registered within Minnesota and the surrounding states, but have sold to buyers as far away as Connecticut, Kentucky and Canada. Sellers can either bring their items to Five Star Auctions for safe storage or items can be stored at their property until they are sold. Kim works with sellers to take photos, develop accurate product descriptions, uploads items to the online auction and advertises for the auctions to ensure the maximum number of bidders view the items.

Diana Larson-Dahl and her husband, Jim are the current owner/ operators. Diana’s parents, Roy & Marie Larson built the pavilion in 1943-1944. At that time, building materials were very scarce due to the WWII war effort so Roy was forced to build the iconic Fish Lake Pavilion from materials found on his land and nearby areas. The Pavilion walls were constructed from fieldstone and sandstone that Roy split himself. The wooden trusses and rafters came from the trees located on his land. They were cut down and milled on-site.

Fish Lake Resort offered Saturday night dances as well as Friday night and Sunday afternoon roller-skating.

They were the main entertainment staple for Kanabec County and surrounding areas at that time. They packed in the crowds.

In 1972, Roy and Marie retired and the resort was taken over by their son, Mike and his wife Karen. They operated the business until 1996 when Diana & Jim took over. In 1997, the resort was turned into a full bar and restaurant from a 3.2 beer parlor establishment.

A Safe, Home Environment: Scandia House Assisted Living serves primarily Advanced Care and Memory Care clients. Memory Care seniors can often be a new challenge for family members because they often require supervision at all times of the day. With Wander Alert technology, the staff are able to respond quickly if one of the residents needs assistance with getting something in their room, a bed-to-chair transfer, toilet cares, an escort about the home, or simply wanting to exit the home, which could prove to be unsafe.

One reason that many seniors make the transition to assisted living is that they have trouble balancing. With a nurse-call system installed throughout the homes, staff are able to place a high priority on escorting the clients from place to place. Falls can be very dangerous, so it is important to Scandia House that residents with balance issues are escorted to and from their bedrooms throughout the day.

With all private bedrooms, the residents at Scandia House are able to develop a sense of their own individualized space, and they are able to bring things from home to decorate

their bedrooms and make them their own.

A Scandia House residence provides three home cooked meals and two snacks each day. The staff put extra effort into making the homes comfortable and homey. Part of that is allowing plenty of Àexibility for visits from family and friends.

Friends and family are encouraged to visit any time and to sit and visit for as long as they’d like with their loved ones. There is also space available for family gatherings such as birthdays and other special events.

Outstanding Staff Scandia House puts a high priority on the quality of the staff hired. The Isle and Mora locations maintain very high 24–hour staffto-client ratios. All staff members are at minimum trained as a Home Health Aid, but across the two facilities, there are three Registered Nurses and an LPN. Nurse visits at the homes are 4-5 days per week.

Led by Ken Bergstrom, a U.S. Navy veteran and registered nurse with over 25 years of medical experience, the staff members are selected for having nursing home experience and certi¿cation with the state; meaning that they are able to manage the medical needs of the residents on a daily basis. Prior to opening Scandia House, Ken was the Director of Nursing at a large Skilled Nursing Facility and has built a nursing team that is well versed on the medical side of things.

In addition to a high level of professional competence, Scandia House staff must also have a caring spirit and a mindset in line with the company values of kindness, dignity and respect for the elderly. The staff appreciates being able to spend time with the residents at a slower pace, sitting down with them and getting to know them.

New Owners Kim & Barry Sherwood

Mora Dairy Queen’s new owners Kim and Barry Sherwood are small-town folks through and through and they’re happy to have found their new hometown in Mora. They both grew up in Aitkin where they found each other, but it was in St. Cloud where they found their niche – small business ownership.

In St. Cloud, the Sherwoods purchased an insurance agency which they had for nine years before selling it and moving their family up to International Falls to buy the local Dairy Queen. They spent 17 years running a successful DQ franchise in a community slightly larger than Mora.

Kim and Barry loved raising their family in a small town and thoroughly enjoyed owning and operating a Dairy Queen restaurant. They were, however very far from family and friends in Central Minnesota and longed to get back to their roots.

That’s how the journey to Mora began.

In 2011, they sold their International Falls store and began looking for another Dairy Queen. They started by buying a seasonal DQ in Chetek, Wis. and when the Mora location came up for sale, they jumped at the opportunity to be so close to home.

Upon purchasing the Mora Dairy Queen, Kim and Barry quickly went to work making improvements to the operation, the building, and adding their own personal touches. The dining area has undergone a total facelift with updated décor, a new paint job, new tiles and new woodwork all contributing to a warmer feel. The Sherwoods also put in a new front counter, painted the exterior and will be adding more lighting and a false chimney outside the building before the project is finished.

The two biggest changes under new ownership are that the Dairy Queen will be open year round and the addition of the Orange Julius line of premium fruit smoothies and blended frothy orange drinks.

The fresh look of the store signals the beginning of a new era for the Mora Dairy Queen. The Sherwoods are building a home in Mora and plan to be here for the long haul and look forward to serving you. They also look forward to getting to know more of the people in Mora as life in a new town settles into a rhythm.
