Minnesota’s annual School Board Recognition Week
Fairview is Leaping into Books as We Celebrate February “I Love to Read” month!
Our opening ceremonies featured all Fairview students and staff meeting in the cafeteria to celebrate literacy. As part of this promotion, we all sang “Gotta Keep Reading” as everyone marched in and got seated. Special highlights included the song “Keep Reading” by the second-grade challenge students, and first-grade teacher, Mrs. Pulford shared bagpipes and told the children to watch for them at the end of February at the closing of “I Love to Read” month. On that final Friday, Dr. James Williams will play his bagpipes and lead us all in a parade throughout the elementary building.
The Mora School District will join school districts throughout the state to salute their local education leaders during Minnesota’s annual School Board Recognition Week February 20-24.
Staff and students are asked to dress or create a poster of their favorite character to feature in this parade. Fridays also are special days to wear sweats, dress in red, wear silly socks, and bring a hat. Help us celebrate reading!
The commemorative week is designed to recognize the contributions made by Minnesota’s school board members, including the Mora School Board, who are charged with governing public education under state law. Minnesota school board members are chosen by their communities through election or appointment to manage local schools. They oversee multimillion dollar budgets that fund education programs for more than 825,000 students in approximately 2,000 schools. Their personnel decisions affect more than 52,000 teachers and thousands of administrators and support workers. These volunteer leaders also are responsible for formulating school district policy, approving curricula, maintaining school facilities, and adhering to state and federal education law. Legal concerns and the complexities of school finance, including budgeting and taxation, require them to spend many hours in board training programs and personal study to enhance their understanding of these issues. Our deepest appreciation is extended to the dedicated men and women who make it possible for local citizens to participate in education in our community. We salute the public servants of the Mora School Board whose commitment and civic responsibility make local control of public schools in our community possible: Karen Kirschner, Chair, 11 years of Service; Rich Schultz, Vice Chair, 15 years of Service; Debee McGovern, Clerk-Treasurer, 16 years of Service; Jinx Greski, 11 years of Service; Doyle Casavant, 9 years of Service; and Ethan Elvehjem, 3 years of Service. Please join us by saying thanks to our school board members during Minnesota’s School Board Recognition Week.
Mora High School FOCUS Program The Mora High School FOCUS program announces the following academic graduates from the FOCUS program by meeting academic and personal goals: Kirstie R., Faith B., Kyle A., and Tyler B. The following FOCUS students earned a 3.0 for second quarter: Tiffany H., Kirstie R., Kristin L., and Amber J. Congratulations to a job well done!
Preschool Registration Thinking about Preschool for 2012-2013 school year? Registration packets will be available in the Fairview School Lobby on March 5. Registration begins on March 19 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. Only complete applications will be accepted!
Fairview Students Choose Brussel Sprouts!?!?
Eligible ages: 3 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012, 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012. Days and tuition rates vary. The Mora Community Education Preschool Program provides experiences that promote the social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative development of each child in the program. The program uses Creative Curriculum and Assessment tools to plan activities and experiences to help your child grow his/her abilities. These tools are research-based and give us clear goals and objectives to lead your child’s growth. Call 320-679-6257 for more information.
ECFE presents: Magic Mike’s Musical Magical Menagerie Magic Mike has traveled and entertained kids and families for more than 25 years. Through his witty and fast-paced show, young and old alike will learn the lesson of… “Time Spent Together is the Best Time of All.” Mike’s tongue-in-cheek approach to magic, helps kids see that sometimes it’s OK to laugh at yourself. Folks will get a chance to meet “Louie” the singing sailor and “Willie” the reading rabbit, or perhaps the timid turtle who really needs to come out of his shell. These friendly characters all have a story to tell. Along with some outrageous magic that will have everyone guessing…How Did He Do That? This promises to be a Family Night to remember.
“Will the students like them? Can we get the students to even try them?” These were some of the questions that were being asked the morning of Feb. 7, as Snack Cart Workers prepared to serve raw Brussel Sprouts on the Healthy Snack Cart for the first time! “Maybe......we could have Farmer Applebottom offer the Brussel Sprouts as a free sample and see if the students will try them!”.
Tuesday March 27th, 2012 5:30-6:00 Dinner, 6:15-7:00 Show
So.... that’s what we did! When all was said and done, approx 50 percent or more of the students were willing to give Brussel Sprouts a try, and approx. half of those students asked for MORE!!!!! Brussel Sprouts were served with a dab of Lite Ranch Dressing, and students were surprised by the firm cabbage taste and texture of the Brussel Sprouts! Staff who had never tried Brussel Sprouts also had the opportunity to give them a try. “They’re actually quite good - I was afraid to even try them” was overheard coming from a staff member.
This event will be held at the Fairview School Cafeteria. Cost for the evening is $2.50 per person. (Maximum $10.00 per family). Childcare for children 6 months-2 years of age will be available for no additional cost. You MUST preregister for this event. To register call 320-679-6257.
One of the goals of the Healthy Snack Cart is to introduce new foods (especially new fruits and veggies) to our students. Students have enjoyed other “new” fruits and veggies such as Ugly Fruit, Jicama, Kalorabi, Spinach Salad and Sweet Peppers.
Early Release for Students on February 24, 2012
Due to a scheduling conflict, all Mora Public School students will be released early on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 as follows: High School Students - released at 12:55 p.m, Fairview Students - released at 1:00 p.m., Trailview Students - released at 1:15 p.m. Please arrange for your student to be picked up at that time or understand that your child will be dropped off at his/her bus stop early that day.

Artistic & Unique Portraits
Digital Hot Shots is now in its new location at 119 South Lake Street in Mora. Professional photographer Linda L. Rother and owner Dave Mormann said they recently made the move and restructured Digital Hot Shots. Dave also purchased the building in Mora last March. “We’ve had to change with the times,” said Rother. “We downsized our space. So much of our work is outside of the studio now. Our studio was the first to change to digital in central Minnesota, now we need to adapt to the changing styles and tastes for outdoor photography. We still have a great professional indoor space; we remodeled to accommodate lighting and sets.” She explained that Mora is quite fortunate to have a commercial photography studio in town because there are only a few in a 100-mile radius. This is due to Mora supporting local businesses. “We have school contracts with four school districts and several contracts with school sports in central Minnesota,” said Rother. “With the current economy, people often don’t appreciate what a trained professional photographer knows and does. It’s really the only profession where clients don’t ask to see your qualifications,” said Rother. She said it is especially important for the photographer to know their equipment, lighting and printing. “Even with the great new digital cameras, most amateurs have very little knowledge about lighting, especially on
outdoor d shots. h Indoor d wedding dd photos h need professional strobes and high school seniors and family outdoor photos should not have dark shadows or bright sunspots on the eyes and faces.” The importance of printing and controlling color and quality is Rother’s mantra. “You cannot show off your vision and turn over the image for other shops to print for you,” she said. Rother has over 35 years of experience as a photographer with 20 years selling top-of-the-line commercial photography studio equipment and supporting 100 pro studios in the metro area. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota, with an emphasis in painting, photography and ceramics. She has attended many professional photographic educational seminars and considers learning and growing her best asset. The grants that she has been awarded from the McKnight, Jerome Foundation and East Central Regional Arts are impressive. Her travel photography spans Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Hungary, Africa, Egypt, Guatemala and Mexico. For people who get a digital disk from other photographers and want better print quality, Rother and her staff will retouch the photos and print them with high-quality custom printing for a competitive price. Rother explained that Digital Hot Shots also does lots of photo restoration and said the largest photo they can print is 24 inches wide by 100 feet. She contributes part of Digital Hot Shots’ success to her talented staff, all who have training/degrees in the visual arts and marketing.

Everything from start to finish is done in-house. Rother explained that she Packages for has had a lot of joy come out of having a studio in this community. only $ 95 “At first I was really nervous. I had Stop in for never been part of a smaller community. My graduating class was 700. My college had 50,000 details students and I lived in Minneapolis for 25 years. I really love this community. When things have been difficult for me, there has been so much support,” she said. “I’m so grateful for this community. This town is so positive and supportive of its community and people.” She continues, “I’m lucky, I get to record people’s joy. I get to bring joy to people by capturing milestones, capturing really joyful moments like weddings, reunions, babies, engagements and even pets. Every day I get to be part of that joy. I just love everything that I do. What could be better? I’ve spent my whole life working on my art,” Rother said. “How many people can say ‘I get to do something I love every day?” Digital Hot Shots invites you to share her joy by visiting her new website: www.digitalhotshots.zenfolio.com.

A loan rate can only be locked in after receiving a completed loan application and signed lock agreement, some exceptions may be made.
