How’s the air in your home? Energy efficiency Many people believe that all the toxins and pollutants are in the outdoor atmosphere. But studies show that the air we breathe indoors can be up to five times more contaminated than the air outside. On average a human spends 90% of their time indoors and most of that is in their own home. Because of this it is very important to test and see what is being breathed in. LOOK FOR THE SIGNS • Construction - renovations or manufacturing can release a number of chemicals and particles in the air • Neighbors can also bring chemicals into your neighborhood • Health Symptoms – If you notice that you are having symptoms similar to the below, but only when you are in your home and not when you are away • Allergies • New or Unusual Conditions • Breathing Issues • Unusual odors Ductwork Installation & Repair

• Dust and other abnormal build-up • Inconsistencies in your home such as temperature, mugginess or dryness in your air HOW TO CHECK • Look at the environment around the area you live • Check your home, sometimes there are signs that are easy to point out or sometimes you will find inconsistencies that you are not used to • If you’re unsure there are many different types of test kits and they are simple and easy to use, such as: • Allergen, Mold, Asbestos, Carbon Monoxide, Radon, Lead HOW TO PREVENT Ventilation – Ventilation is very important. With improper ventilation chemicals that shouldn’t be inhaled will linger in the air. When cleaning or doing activities that cause high-level pollutants, make sure there is good air flow. Opening windows or doors, using ceiling fans or bath fans, or even running a window air conditioner can help the quality of the air in your home. Filters – Air Conditioners, furnaces and HVAC filters should be changed out every month or two for clean quality air. If you have pets or live in a high-pollen area you may want to change it out more frequently or buy certain filters. DEVICES TO HELP AIR QUALITY • Humidifier/Dehumidifier – Depending on your home, having one of these can help with the mugginess or dryness of your air. • Air Purifier – These filter out dirty air and put clean air back into your home. • Bath Fans – Your bathroom is a key place for humidity, with a bath fan this can help prevent mold and mildew damage. There are many ways to reduce a household’s energy use from simple adjustments in behavior to comprehensive home improvements. The main reasons to conserve energy are to save on utility bills and protect the environment. Some of the more common ways to conserve energy are: REPLACE YOUR LIGHT BULBS • Traditional incandescent light bulbs consume an excessive amount of electricity and need replacing more often than energy efficient bulbs. • Halogen incandescent bulbs, CFLs and LEDs use 25-80% less electricity and last 3- 25 times longer than traditional bulbs. INSTALL A PROGRAMMABLE OR SMART THERMOSTAT • Automatically turn off or reduce heating and cooling during times when you’re away or sleeping. • Depending on the model, programmable thermostats can save you $180 per year. INSTALL ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS • To prevent heat loss through your windows, replace single-pane windows with double-pane ones. • In warmer climates, heat gain through your windows may be a problem. • Window shades, shutters, screens and awnings can also provide an extra layer of insulation between your home and external temperatures. WEATHERIZE YOUR HOME • Sealing air leaks around your home is a great way to reduce your heating and cooling expenses. • Apply caulk or weather stripping to seal air leaks or cracks PURCHASE ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES • On average, appliances take up about 13% of your total household energy use. • Energy efficient appliances may have higher purchase prices but cost less to operate. CONSIDER A NEW WATER HEATER • Purchasing an energy efficient water heater will reduce your water heating expenses. USE SMART POWER STRIPS • Advanced power strips can shut off the power to electronics when not in use. • Can be turned off at an assigned time, during inactivity or through remote switches. ADJUST YOUR DAY-TO-DAY BEHAVIOR • Energy conservation is as simple as turning off lights or appliances when not in use. • On occasion, to save energy hang dry clothes, wash dishes by hand, turn down the heat and use your air conditioner less in the summer as heating and cooling expenses constitute nearly have of an average home’s utility bill.

Spring Fix Up Fixing that leaky faucet
Fixing a leaky faucet may not be as difficult as you might think. For most faucets it’s usually a simple fix and can take less than an hour. Faucets are an important part of your home but can be annoying when they start dripping.
TOOLS YOU MAY NEED • Screwdriver • Slip-joint pliers • Penetrating oil • Allen wrench, depending on the faucet Depending on the faucet and the type of issue it has, you may need other items. You might also consider purchasing a new faucet as they come in different price points, styles, models or it may just be time to get a new one.
HOW TO STOP THAT DRIP STEP ONE – You will first want to shut off your water supply. If your house does not have shutoffs for individual fixtures, you will need to shut off the main supply. STEP TWO – Assess your faucet. Where is the leak coming from and what type of faucet is it? Is the leak coming from the base or the spout?
Disassemble the faucet where the leak comes from. There are many different types of faucets and different parts based on the faucet type. There are one-handle, two-handle, pull-out, pulldown, just to name a few. STEP THREE – Disassemble the faucet. Use your Allen wrench, screwdriver and/or your slip-joint pliers to get to where the problem is with the faucet. STEP FOUR – Once you have found the problem, replace what may be worn or broken. This could be as simple as a washer or an O-ring, or be a little larger like a cartridge. STEP FIVE – Make sure that the faucet is clean before reassembling. Inspect the pieces or holes in the faucet and clean them out if they are clogged or dirty, and then you can reassemble the faucet. SAVES YOU MONEY In the end, by investing some time to fix this problem, you wind up saving money. A small leak could waste anywhere from a few gallons of water to hundreds of gallons over the course of a year.

Plan and prep your paint job A good paint job is important because it adds character, beauty and personality to your home. For that reason, it is important to take sufficient time planning and prepping to ensure your paint job is successful. TIPS & TRICKS • Color Consistency – Paint colors may vary slightly from one can to the next; therefore, if you mix several cans of paint in a large bucket you can eliminate color difference when transitioning to a new can of paint. • Perfect Edge – Before removing painting tape off trim or walls, let the paint dry for at least 24 hours, and then with a sharp utility knife cut it loose to avoid tearing off pieces of dried paint from the walls. As the paint is cut, pull up at a 45-degree angle. • Drop Cloths – Regardless of how careful you are spills and splatters happen. Avoid the mess by choosing either a canvas or rosin paper drop cloth. Thick canvas stays in place so it can be used to cover any surface,
whereas rosin paper is better over vinyl, tile and hard-wood and provides a nonslip surface. Painting Techniques – paint the trim first, then the ceiling and walls. It is easier to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls. When painting trim worry more about getting a smooth finish then being neat since you’ll be painting the walls later. PREPARATION • Materials to have on hand: patching paste, putty knife, primer, paint-can opener, stir sticks, roller covers, paintbrushes, paint tray, gloves, and drop cloths. • Clean dirty surfaces in order for the paint to bond properly. • Repair any imperfections to ensure the final job looks fresh and crisp. Protect anything you don’t want painted. • Drop clothes are a must, and you can even use small plastic sandwich bags to protect doorknobs. • Remove light switch and outlet covers if necessary.
