5 ways to protect your people and animals

While COVID-19 remains in the front of everyone’s mind, the coming of mosquito season means that both people and livestock are vulnerable to other serious illnesses if the farm infrastructure is not sound.

troughs and feed pans, among others. Clean the water troughs to prevent mosquito-friendly vegetation. Potholes also ¿ll with water and should be ¿xed promptly.

Mosquitoes can transmit a number of diseases, including dengue, malaria, yellow fever, Zika and West Nile virus. Farms provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes in numerous places. But plenty of measures can be taken to protect the landscape, waters, and structures from mass mosquito gathering and the disease they bring.

• Maintain the air Àow. It’s vital to keep the air moving in barns and stables. Stagnant air, like stagnant water, is inviting to them. It traps moisture and scents that attract them. Use fans in barns and stables to discourage mosquitoes from sticking around.

• Set traps. Traps have an attractant to lure and either capture or kill female mosquitoes. If you purchase traps, check the label to ensure you’re setting enough traps for the size of your property. You can also create your own DIY mosquito traps. A Google search will turn up methods for making them. Just never place traps where people or animals gather.

Mosquitoes multiply quickly; females lay about 100 eggs at a time.

So it can be a constant battle keeping their population down without knowing the preventive tactics you can use in the many places where they’re attracted.

• Use nature. Mosquitoes are annoying to people but a meal to other creatures. Thus, nature is one of the best options for mosquito control, and creating a welcome farm environment for mosquito-eating species means reducing mosquitoes on the property. DragonÀies love to eat mosquitoes and will attack them as both nymphs and adults. If you have a pond or other body of water, you can release dragonÀy nymphs into the water and let them feast on the mosquitoes. Fish are an effective weapon against mosquitoes; gold¿sh, minnows and guppies eat mosquito larvae in ponds.

• Disrupt stagnant ponds, swamps. Mosquitoes need stagnant water to spawn, and ponds or swamps are breeding grounds for them.

An answer for this is installing an aeration pump or a fountain. Those can disrupt the water and make it dif¿cult for mosquitoes to reproduce.

You can also reduce the amount of vegetation, such as lily pads, piles of leaves, and cattails that are all either in the water or around it. That will reduce the places that protect mosquitoes from their predators.

• Eliminate standing water. The water in drinking troughs often becomes stagnant and, therefore, a magnet for mosquitoes. Draining and re¿lling troughs and water buckets frequently with fresh water is one answer. There’s a remarkable number of places on farms to watch out for standing water – thus, more mosquito havens. Empty or remove containers that hold water – tires, birdbaths, clogged gutters, water

You can greatly reduce the amount of mosquitoes on your farm, but it takes extra effort. But with the health of your people and livestock at risk, it’s so well worth it.

NAMI MINNESOTA OFFERS FREE ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH CLASSES NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) has set up a wide variety of free online mental health classes for June and July.

They include classes such as Creating Caring Communities, Mental Health and the Workplace, Mental Illnesses and Crisis Communication, Self Care and Mindfulness, Hope for Recovery, In Our Own Voice, Together We Can Make it OK, Discipline Tips for Stressed Parents, a suicide prevention class called QPR – Question, Persuade and Refer and many more.

The classes are designed for family members and caregivers, persons living with a mental illness, service providers, and also the general public.

BY JON TATTING EAST CENTRAL REGIONAL LIBRARY The 2020 Summer Learning Program at East Central Regional Library began Monday, June 1, and will run through Aug. 15. Th is year’s theme is Dig Deeper: Read, Investigate, Discover, supporting that reading opens doors to learning and fun. The library encourages everyone from across the region to participate this summer.

There will be some significant changes for the 2020 program. One of the biggest changes, for the first

time, will be readers of all ages can participate entirely online. Our online option launched on June 1.

MINNESOTANS WITH LOW INCOMES NOW ABLE TO PURCHASE FOOD ONLINE USING SNAP BENEFITS Almost 400,000 people who use the federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Minnesota now have more options to buy food safely.

Starting May 28, 2020, they can purchase groceries online using their Electronic Benefit Transfer cards.

For now, Walmart and Amazon are the only online retailers approved by the United States Department of Agriculture for SNAP purchases and available in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services is encouraging other retailers to seek approval from the USDA so that SNAP recipients have more options. DHS

HUMAN SERVICES LAUNCHES NEW BENEFITS FOR CHILDREN The Minnesota Department of Human Services, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Education and Code for America, recently launched the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer, also referred to as P-EBT, benefit.

The Federal Family First Coronavirus Response Act allows children eligible for the school meal program to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits retroactive to March through the first week in June. Th is is in addition to any SNAP, Minnesota Family Investment Program or Unemployment Insurance benefits their families may already receive.

Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead said, “Th is new program will ensure families can purchase healthy food to fi ll their children’s stomachs while easing the fi nancial burden of extra grocery purchases.

Th is program is an important step in fi lling that gap to make sure no child goes hungry.”

High School Math Teacher beginning the 2020-2021 school year Posting Period/Deadline: June 29th, 2020 or until filled .68 FTE Position as: High School position. Permanent and starting in August 2020. (This position could be combined with our part time Career and Technical position available to make a full time FTE.) Successful applicant must have a Minnesota Teaching license for grades 6 -12. Coaching/advisor positions may also be available.

Salary: Based on District Teachers’ Master Agreement (Q Comp pay is also available.)

Duty Days: 147 student contact days; additional professional development days (Ogilvie educates with a 4-Day School Week structure; Monday typically the nonschool day.)

CNA Full-Time or part-time 6 am – 2 pm. Includes every other weekend. WI CNA required. $500.00 sign-on bonus on second paycheck and $500.00 after 6 months of successful employment. Full benefit package.

RN ACUTE 36 hrs./week, 7 pm – 7 am. Every third weekend and every third holiday. WI RN required. Full benefit package.

ED PATIENT REGISTRATION REP. 9 am – 9 pm, every other Saturday and Sunday.
