SEPT. 11  FOOD SHELF FUNDRAISER BREAKFAST The local Knights of Columbus council is sponsoring a breakfast for the Mora Food Pantry and the Ogilvie Food Shelf from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Mary’s Parish Center in Mora (three blocks west of the stop light).

SEPT. 10 HOPE IN ACTION MN Hope in Action MN is a mental health awareness and suicide prevention group which will be hosting its third annual “Inspire Hope and Healing” event beginning at 9 a.m. at the Cambridge Campus of Anoka Ramsey Community College.

The event is a 5k run and family run/walk to raise awareness and provide support for families affected by mental illness, specifically those affected by suicide in the community.

SEPT. 10 RUM RIVER CLEAN UP The 11th annual clean up of Rum River will rendezvous at the boat launch of Cambridge City Park, launching by 9:30 a.m. Participants will head down river for nine miles, pulling out at Martin’s Landing (DNR) just south of the city of Isanti, east side of the river off County Rd. 23/Whiskey Road.

Participants are assigned a one to two mile section of the river to pick up and then are free to paddle at leisure to the take out. Bring your own canoe, kayak or other water-worthy device, including paddles and life jackets.

Protective gloves and garbage bags will be provided. Free bottles of water and snacks will be available, but do pack a lunch. Children age 12 and under should be accompanied by an adult.

season. After a deer season is open, a license is valid the same day of purchase if it is purchased before legal shooting hours. If the license is purchased after legal shooting hours have begun, it is valid the following day. Bonus permits are valid when issued if the appropriate regular license is valid.

• Residents of Minnesota State Veterans Homes who are 84 or older may take deer of either sex regardless of permit area designation during any deer season.

• A person may purchase no more than one firearms muzzleloader and archery deer license in a calendar year.

• Bonus and early antlerless season permits may be purchased in addition to regular licenses. Bonus permits may be purchased throughout the season, but must be in possession when taking deer. The permit is valid when your regular license in that season is valid. Regular licenses and antlerless tags may be used in any order. Bonus permits may not be used during the early-antlerless season.

• A person may not take or tag deer without the appropriate license or permit. The term “take” includes attempting to take deer, deer drives, spotting or otherwise assisting another person in taking deer.

• Except in bucks-only and youth-only antlerless permit areas, a regular archery license is valid for an either sex deer statewide in any open area • Youth archery licenses: hunters age 10 to 17 must obtain a youth deer hunting license (free for youth 10-12). Youth licenses are valid for either-sex deer, except in permit areas designated bucks only. Youth under the age of 10 may not hunt big game.

The person whose tag is on the deer must personally present the deer at an official registration station and receive a big game possession tag. The tag must be attached to the hind leg, ear, or antler where the site tag was attached. You can find a complete list of all stations at any DNR wildlife office or on the DNR website.

SHOOTING HOURS One half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

TRESPASS LAW The trespass law applies to all outdoor recreation, including hunting. When taking part in outdoor recreation, you may not enter legally posted land or agricultural land without permission.

A person on foot may, without permission, enter land that is not posted to retrieve a wounded animal that was lawfully shot, but may not remain on the land after being told to leave.

Improvement Things to know before building a deck Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau Housing Survey indicate that homeowners annually spend billions of dollars improving outdoor living areas.

One of the most popular ways to do just that is to add a deck to a home.

Decks are beneficial in many ways.

Grillmasters love decks because they make the perfect place to set up a grill and a table and cook for family and friends. Those who simply love being outdoors find decks the perfect place to relax and soak up some sun or idle away the evening hours.

Homeowners who want to build a deck should know a few things before that process begins.

• Permits are necessary. Unless the deck is going to be especially small, you will likely need a permit to build it. Before buying any materials or consulting any contractors, make certain you know which permits you need and how to get them. If the proper permits are not secured before the project begins, you might have to tear down the whole project

and start all over again.

• Decks don’t have to go on the back of the house. If the back of your house sits in the blazing sun all day, then it’s probably best to build the deck elsewhere, and that’s perfectly alright. So long as the property and permits allow, decks can be built on the side of a home as well, and putting a deck on the side might be more comfortable.

• Decks don’t have to be made of wood. It’s easy to assume all decks are made of plain wood. However, decks can be made out of a wide variety of materials, natural or synthetic. Pressure treated wood is perhaps the most popular material for decking because it’s not very expensive. But manmade materials that are a mixture of recycled plastic and wood bits or sawdust are also popular because they require no maintenance. But homeowners should know that manmade materials can get hot in the sun, which will require those enjoying the deck to wear shoes.

• Expect to do some digging. If you’re going to build your own deck, expect to do some serious digging.

Local building codes will dictate how deep you will need to dig for the pier footings, which support the deck’s weight. Just how deep you’ll dig depends on your climate’s specific frost line, but it’s safe to assume you’ll get a workout in when digging.

• The deck can have multiple levels.

Though many people associate decks with one level, it’s possible to have a multi-level deck if you simply don’t have enough room to build a deck that will be big enough to meet all of your needs. A multi-level deck can break up those long flights of stairs while ensuring you will always have somewhere to go to escape the sun on a hot day.

• You will want to protect the deck.

Decks are a costly investment, and you will want to protect that investment. If you’re building a wood deck, keep in mind the sun will beat down on the deck for most of the year. You can protect the deck by

painting it. Paint provides sunscreen for the deck, stopping the sun from breaking down the material. Once you’ve finished painting, apply sealant, whether it’s oil- or water-based.

• Don’t forget fasteners. Fasteners will hide the screws for aesthetic appeal. But not all woods and fasteners are the right fit, as certain woods are only compatible with certain fasteners. Find out which fasteners make the right fit ahead of time. Because fasteners conceal the screws, they also make it possible to go barefoot on the deck.

A deck makes a great addition to many homes, but homeowners should learn as much as possible about decks and what goes into building them before making any decking decisions.

While most maintenance and even some repairs can easily be handled by a typical homeowner, building a new deck or performing major repairs should generally be left to a professional.

Thirty percent of a home’s energy budget goes to heating water for cleaning and bathing. Some homeowners are looking to new and efficient tankless water heaters as an option on saving money on water heating costs and saving space around the house, as

Consumer Reports found that while tankless heaters that use high-powered burners to heat water as it flows through the unit to provide hot water on demand are 22 percent more efficient than

gas-fired hot water tanks, there are some pitfalls as well. Tankless heaters tend to be more expensive than traditional water heaters, so it could take several years for the average homeowner to recoup his costs in terms of energy savings.

Also, inconsistent water temperature is a frequent complaint among

testers of tankless products. The hot water does not come instantaneously, and much like standard water heaters, if there is residual cold water in the pipes, this will have to be forced through first before the hot water arrives. Because many tankless water heaters work with electric controls, in the event of a power outage, hot water could be lost for the duration of the outage.

RANDY J. BARNES Randy Jay Barnes of Mora died on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 57 years old.

He was born on June 25, 1959, in SSt. Paul to Jay Francis and Donna JJean (Klemz) Barnes. He was the tthird of nine siblings. When he w was only a few years old, the family m moved to Grasston where they establlished their family farm. He enjoyed h helping his father and other siblings ccare for many animals, including ggame hens.

He attended Braham Public SSchool, graduating in 1978. While sstill in school he met his future wife Candace Determan of Ogilvie. After C ggraduation he entered the work force aand became one of the most dependaable workers anyone would know.

He was united in marriage to Candace Determan on June 9, 1984, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ogilvie.

On June 16, 1986, their first child, Derrick Jon was born. Two years later on Nov. 30, 1988, their second child, Brittany Ann was born.

They purchased their first home in Mora in 1989. During that time he worked for Fingerhut and he would remain there for 19 years. Following the closing of Fingerhut he worked at various jobs including; group home work, farm help, laundry attendant and janitorial work.

He enjoyed playing the drums, listening to music, going to concerts, cooking, cleaning, babysitting his grandchildren and fishing with his family. He also loved going to garage sales and thrift stores. He was a Christian man who loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all his heart. He was a devoted husband, loving father and wonderful grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Neil and Robin Barnes.

He is survived by wife, Candace of Mora; son, Derrick Barnes of Mora; daughter, Brittany (Jon) Rappl of Mora; grandchildren, Hunter, Jayden, and baby to be, Rappl; brothers, Rick (Linda), Thomas (Nancy), Timothy (Becky), and Donny (Adam); sisters, Susan (David) Bartholomaus and Wendy (Les) Bloom; father and mother-in-law, Donald and Laura Determan; brothers and sister-in-law, Doug (Cheryl) Determan, Jerome (Jenny) Determan, Katherine (Danny) Tramm, David (Mary) Determan; plus many nieces, nephews and friends.

His funeral service was held on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ogilvie.

Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.

Arrangements were handled by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home.

Advertising Policies: The publisher is not liable for slight changes or typographical errors that do not diminish the value of the advertisement.

The publisher's liability for any other error is limited to crediting the advertiser for the space occupied by the advertisement materially affected by the error. For example, if there is a word missing from a classified ad (garage sale item or descriptive word), no credit will be issued.

Credit will not be given for more than one incorrect insertion unless the publisher is notified the same week the error occurs. All claims for adjustment must be communicated

to the publisher within 7 days of the first insertion. Failure to do so will result in forfeit of credit.

Requests to place ads after the deadline nullifies all potential credit requests.

Please check to make sure your advertisement is correct. If you made a change in your ad - in text and/or scheduling, please check to make sure it is corrected. If you have cancelled an ad, please check to make sure that the advertisement has been cancelled.

We cannot guarantee placement of where your ad will be within your classification.
