Students St d t attend tt d L Leadership d hi ttraining i i On Sept. 27 The Granite Ridge Conference held their annual Leadership/Sportsmanship training at St Cloud Cathedral. Anne Schleper, originally from St. Cloud, MN and part of the 2014 USA Olympic Hockey Team, was the main speaker. Anne talked about the importance of being a positive role model and leader. 19 Mora students had the privilege of attending the training.

CARES Club recognizes CARES behavior CARES Club was held Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. with Ms. Jordan. This is a monthly recognition of those students nominated by their peers and/or teachers that exemplify CARES behavior during the month. Nominated students will receive a certificate and have an ice cream social with Ms. Jordan.

Trailview expansion makes significant progress Trailview expansion made significant progress over the summer.

Students were welcomed into the building on Sept. 6 to an expanded commons/kitchen area, refurbished media classroom, a new roof and a new, highly expanded parking lot. Construction continues on the new classrooms on the backside of Trailview, a new gym and softball fields. The new gym is scheduled to be operational in February and classrooms are expected to be completed in May. The joining of the new building and old building will happen over the summer.

On Friday, Sept. 16, the Hinckley VFW had a Prisoner of War (POW) Hot Air Balloon in the Trailview gym for grades 4, 5 and 6 to tour in 20 minute increments. It was partially inflated on it’s side for the tour in the gym. Students were able to walk into it, hear some history about the POW/MIA (Over 80,000) and learn about the places the balloon has been in the past.

After school, the balloon went to the high school practice field.

As the game approached, it was fully inflated for the national anthem. The American Legion played TAPS following the anthem. A freewill offering was collected to off-set the costs.

Bus safety/expectations Ms. Jordan, new elementary principal at Fairview visited Kindergarten to 2nd grade classrooms throughout Fairview to discuss bus safety and bus expectations during September.

Hydration stations Mora students and community members using the school facility will find an appealing source of fresh water with the addition of a second hydration station to the 4th floor of the HS and a hydration station to be added to the Trailview Commons.

A good portion of the costs for these units was covered by a mini grant available through Partners in Healthy Living. Partners in Healthy Living is a collaborative effort between Pine, Kanabec, Mille Lacs and Isanti Counties public health departments. Their goal is to work with communities, schools, health care and worksites to promote policy, system and environmental changes. The intent is to improve nutrition, increase physical activity and decrease tobacco use and exposure.

Water makes up 60 percent of your body weight and every body system depends on it. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you feel tired. The hydration stations are a welcome addition to the Mora Schools.

QComp Plan approved Over the summer, Mora Schools approved a QComp Plan (Quality Compensation Plan) for the district. The plan calls for focused professional development, observations through instructional coaching and increased collaboration.

Teachers have dove into data analysis through the PLCs they have formed. PLCs are Professional Learning Communities of staff that have similar positions and similar goals for student achievement.

6th Graders work as a team in science class Sixth grade students were working to engineer an origami cube in science class.

They were given very little direction and had to work as a team to solve the cube. After working hard in their teams, the groups successfully assembled their cubes! It was impressive to see students come together and support one another throughout this difficult task.

ALC students visit Audubon Center The Middle Level ALC students went to the Audubon Center of the North Woods to experience the high ropes course. It was a beautiful day so we took some time to wade in the lake and walk in the woods! Another awesome crew of students this year!

PHEASANT SEASON Requirements for Pheasant and Other Small Game Hunting License Requirements: • All residents and nonresidents, 16 and older, must have a valid small game license in possession to take small game. Residents may hunt small game without a license on land they occupy as their principal residence.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Pheasants General description: The ring-necked pheasant is a chicken-like bird with a long tail found mainly in the agricultural lands of rural America.

Length: 20 to 36 inches, including the tail.

Weight: 2 to 3 pounds.

Color: Males (called cocks or roosters) have mostly reddish-orange body feathers, greenish black heads with a red eye patch and white neck rings. They also have a sharp spur on each leg. Females are mottled brown.

Sound: Ring-necked pheasant roosters crow loudly in spring and often cackle when they fly.

Reproduction: Pheasants mate from April through May. Hens lay an average of 12 eggs, which hatch in 23 to 25 days. After only one week, the young pheasants are covered in feathers and are able to feed themselves and fly. They don’t leave their mother for at least 10 weeks.

Food: Pheasants eat insects, weed seeds, corn, soybeans and other crops.

Predators: Fox, coyote, owls and hawks. Raccoons and skunks eat pheasant eggs.

Habitat and range: Pheasants live in grasslands and cattail marshes near grain fields.

Pheasants are typically found in central and southern Minnesota. Pheasants do not migrate.

Population and management: Keeping a stable pheasant population is difficult in Minnesota. There aren’t enough grasslands for the birds to nest in and not enough cattail marshes where they can hide from cold winter weather. Pheasant die-offs are common during extreme winters. Each year, Minnesota hunters harvest 350,000 pheasants.

Fun facts: To avoid danger, ring-necked pheasant often run rather than fly. Pheasants are frequently seen along gravel roads eating small pebbles (called grit), which help the birds digest food.

PHEASANT SEASON Pheasant Hunting Tips According to a DNR wildlife research biologist, pheasants follow a schedule as routine as your daily commute to and from work. Understanding the pheasant’s daily movements can increase your odds of flushing a rooster.

“Pheasants start their day before sunrise at roost sites, usually in areas of shortto medium-height grass or weeds, where they spend the night.” That’s the word from Dick Kimmel, research biologist at the DNR Farmland Wildlife Research and Populations Station at Madelia. Kimmel says that at first light, pheasants head for roadsides or similar areas where they can find gravel or grit.

Pheasants usually begin feeding around 8 a.m. When shooting hours begin an hour later, the birds are still feeding, often in grain fields while cautiously making their way toward safe cover. “Look for the edges of picked cornfields,” says Kimmel, who regularly hunts southwestern Minnesota with his English setter, Banjo.

By mid-morning, pheasants have left the fields for the densest, thickest cover they can find, such as a standing corn, federal Conservation Reserve Program

(CRP) fields, brush patches, wetlands or native grasses. Kimmel says the birds will “hunker down here for the day until late afternoon.”

It’s next to impossible for small hunting groups of two to three hunters to work large fields of standing corn. Pheasants often run to avoid predators, a response that frustrates dogs and hunters working corn, soybean and alfalfa fields. Groups of two or three hunters usually have better success working grass fields, field edges or fencerows. Other likely spots during midday are ditch banks and deep into marshes.

Remember: The nastier the weather, the deeper into cover the pheasant will go.

But eventually, pheasants have to eat again. During the late afternoon, the birds move from their loafing spots back to the feeding areas. As in the morning, birds now are easier to spot from a distance and are more accessible to hunters.

“That’s why the first and last shooting hours are consistently the best times to hunt pheasants,” Kimmel adds.

4 reasons for a check engine Vehicles rely on many components working harmoniously to function at optimal capacity. Any number of systems can go wrong and oftentimes the first indication that something has gone awry is an illuminated dashboard signal.

One such signal is the “check engine” light. Many drivers have little idea what to do when this indicator lights up and this light can cause some anxiety. According to Consumer Reports, a check engine light turning on does not usually require immediate action. However, it does mean that you should make an appointment to have the vehicle inspected for potential problems.

Check engine lights are part of a car’s onboard diagnostics. The light turning on may indicate something minor, such as a loose fuel cap, or something more serious like a misfiring engine.

When the light turns on, drivers wondering why may want to see if the answer is related to one of the following issues.

1. Loose gas cap: Fuel vapors can leak out and air can get in when the fuel cap isn’t secured correctly. This can compromise the fuel system and make the check engine light come on.

Take off the cap and then reseal it to see if that alleviates the problem. Cracked caps will need to be replaced.

This sensor monitors how much fuel is burned.

Compromised data can cause a decrease in fuel efficiency.

Some do-ityourselfers can replace an oxygen sensor on their own, but those who can’t should have the issue addressed immediately by a professional.

3. Too much speed or load: Towing a trailer or another heavy item may put strain on the vehicle and cause the light to come on because of loss of power. Lightening the load and reducing speed can help fix the problem.

CHARLES L. PAXTON Charles LeRoy Paxton of Mora died on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at his home after a courageous battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was 74 years old.

He was born on Oct. 22, 1941, iin Spirit Lake, Iowa to Eldon and B Beulah (Struthers) Paxton. He was tthe third of five siblings. When he w was 9 months old the family moved ffrom Iowa to Minnesota. They rented a farm for a short time, then in 1948 p purchased the family farm near Q Quamba. He and his siblings helped ccare for the farm.

He attended Quamba Public SSchool and in ninth grade he transfferred to Mora Public School. In 1960 h he left home to fi nd work in Minn neapolis. He worked at Seaman Produ ucts for the next 25 years. When the ffactory closed, Hallmark Enterprise purchased the equipment and offered him a job with them. He worked with them for 10 years, then quit and moved back to the family farm and purchased the Double D Garage. After two years he closed the garage and was hired at Fleet Supply Co. He retired in 2001.

He was united in marriage to Patsy Cashman on Jan. 7, 1961. To this union four children were born. He enjoyed horseback riding in his younger days, snowmobiling, four-wheeling with his elder friends and working on an old car.

He was preceded in death by parents, Eldon and Beulah Paxton; son, Rodney Paxton; brother, Muryl Paxton; sister, Donna Weidendorf and nephews, David Paxton and Philip Thomas.

He is survived by wife, Patsy Paxton of Mora; son, Troy Paxton of Coon Rapids; daughters, Teresa (Elbert) Lamb of New Brighton, Melanie Paxton of Mora; sisters, Leella (Russell) Thomas of Grasston and Mary (Rich) Campbell of Brook Park; grandchildren, Kari, Brian, Lucas, Jeremy, Alicia, Crystal, Valerie, Christopher, Dustin, Corin, Charles and Cody; 14 greatgrandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends for 50 plus years, Charles Johnson and LeRoy Berres.

Funeral service was held on Friday, Sept. 30, at Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home.

Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
