DEER HUNTING FIREARM OPENER Important Dates:

Legal buck and antlerless deer

• Legal bucks have at least one antler at least 3 inches long.

Fawn bucks, sometimes called button bucks, are not legal bucks.

• Antlerless deer are without an antler at least 3 inches long.

License Information

Registration of Deer

• All deer licenses (archery, firearms, muzzleloader) may be purchased at any time before or during the season. After a deer season is open, a license is valid the same day of purchase if it is purchased before legal shooting hours.

• If the license is purchased after legal shooting hours have begun, it is valid the following day. Bonus permits are valid when issued if the appropriate regular license is valid.

• A person may purchase no more than one firearms, muzzleloader and archery deer license in a calendar year.

Every deer taken must be registered and antlers must remain attached until the deer is registered. In all cases, the deer must be registered within 48 hours after the deer was taken and before the deer is processed either privately or commercially.

Deer may be transported out of the area where taken without first being registered. There are three registration options: 1. Walk-in Big Game Registration Stations—Registration stations display large, orange “Big Game Registration” signs.

The person whose tag is on the deer must personally present the deer at an official registration station and receive a big game possession tag. The tag must be attached to the hind leg, ear, or antler where the site tag was attached.

2. Telephone— Dial 888-706-6367 to get into the system and begin registering. Follow the steps printed on your deer license. You will need a pen to record a confirmation number to complete the registration.

3. Internet—Go to mndnr.gov/hunting to register your deer.

The questions will be identical to phone registration.

Legal Big Game Cartridges • It is at least .220 caliber and has center fire ignition; • It is loaded only with single projectile ammunition; • The projectile used has a soft point or is an expanding bullet type;* * Note: Hunters are reminded to select bullets that are suitable for taking big game. Most major manufacturers offer either bonded or all-copper bullets that are appropriate for taking big game. Hunters are advised to select a proper bullet design and weight that is suitable for humanely taking big game.

A licensed hunter may use a crossbow for deer with a regular firearms license or a crossbow disability permit and an archery license. Crossbows used for hunting must: · Be shoulder fired with a 30-inch minimum stock · Deliver at least 42 foot-pounds of energy at 10 feet · Bolts (arrows) must be at least 10 inches long · Have a working safety

Chronic Wasting Disease Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) occurs in deer, caribou, elk and moose. It belongs to a group of infectious diseases known as “transmissible spongiform encephalopathies” (TSEs). Typical signs of the disease include drooping head or ears, incoordination, poor body condition, increased salivation or excessive thirst or urination. CWD is always fatal. Transportation of Deer

Opens Nov. 4 Although hunters can buy archery, firearm and muzzleloader licenses, the bag limits may not allow all three tags to be filled in a single deer area. It is the hunter’s responsibility to know the bag limit for the areas they hunt. The statewide bag limit for deer is five. Deer harvested in special hunts do not contribute to the bag limit within the surrounding deer permit area; however, they do contribute to the statewide limit.

Important Information to Know · Blaze orange/pink: The visible portion of a person’s cap and outer clothing above the waist (excluding sleeves and gloves) must be blaze orange or pink. Blaze orange/ pink camouflage patterns are allowed and must be at least 50 percent blaze orange/pink within each square foot. · Shooting hours: One half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. · Shooting from a motor vehicle: No person may take a wild animal with a firearm from a motor vehicle, except hunters with a disability permit. · Firearm transportation: A person may not transport a firearm, including a handgun, in or on a motor vehicle unless the firearm is: unloaded and fastened in a case so that no part of the firearm is exposed (a holster is not a legal case); unloaded and in the closed trunk of a motor vehicle. · Disposal of carcasses: Hunters who process their own deer may not dispose of carcasses on public land, including

A legally registered animal may be transported any time during and after the deer hunting season. The licensee must accompany the deer in transport except as follows: • A deer that has been registered may be transported by another person, if the signature, address and license number of the licensee and the origin and destination of the transport are written on the back of the possession tag, the site tag or a separate tag the licensee provides.

• All deer in transport must be readily accessible for inspection

by DNR conservation officers.

• The head of a deer must remain attached to the carcass until the deer is registered. Skin and entrails may be removed before registration. Deer may be quartered before being registered, but the animal’s head must remain attached to one of the quarters.

Trespass Law The trespass law applies to all outdoor recreation, including hunting. When taking part in outdoor recreation, you may not enter legally posted land or agricultural land without permission.

A person on foot may, without permission, enter land that is not posted to retrieve a wounded animal that was lawfully shot, but may not remain on the land after being told to leave.

DNR conservation officers and other peace officers may arrest, without a warrant, any person detected in the actual violation

of wildlife, fish, or water laws and may enter any lands to carry out these duties.

Minnesota Deer Facts MN DNR 2017 Deer: The animal • Adult female white-tailed deer weigh about 145 lbs., and males weigh about 170 lbs.

• The biggest white-tailed deer recorded in Minnesota was a 500-pound buck.

• A whitetail’s home range is about 1 square mile.

Deer hunting • There are nearly 500,000 firearms deer hunters in Minnesota.

• Last year, 32 percent of Minnesota firearm hunters successfully harvested a deer. About 61 percent were antlered bucks.

• 70 percent of Minnesota’s firearms deer harvest typically occurs during the first three or four days of the season.

• The average hunter spends five days afield during Minnesota’s firearms deer season.

• The highest deer harvests occurred during the early to mid1990s and from 2000 to 2008. From 2000 to 2008 the harvest topped 200,000 deer each year. The high harvests in the early 2000s occurred at a time when the overriding philosophy was to reduce the deer population so it wouldn’t grow out of control and to address certain

“Initially it was a huge concern,” said Deanna Pomije, Kanabec Soil and Water Conservation District Manager on how the Minnesota Buffer Law would affect farmers and landowners.

The preliminary assessment of how far Kanabec County is in compliance with the law has gone well said Pomije.

She said that 73 percent of Kanabec County lands adjacent to public waters are in compliance while 74 percent of Minnesota counties are 60-100 percent compliant with the state’s bipartisan water quality buffer initiative. “We are lucky that a lot of our land adjacent to these waters already has grass and hay. However, landowners need to understand that if it is ever tilled that it will need a buffer.”

The Minnesota Buffer Law which was passed in 2015 and amended in 2016 requires landowners with land adjacent to public waters or lakes to have a 50-foot vegetative buffer and those adjacent to a public drainage ditch to have a 16 1/2 foot vegetative buffer for better water quality.
