Jere earned his accounting degree while attending Bemidji State, graduating from there in 1981. He passed his CPA exam and has been working as an accountant ever since. Jere loves the flexibility of owning his own business. When the couple’s

children were growing up, it meant that he could take some time off during the day if he needed to attend one of the children’s school activities. He’s always loved working with numbers so the accounting field has been just right for him. “It’s like putting a puzzle together,” he says. When he is able to put all the numbers together and come up with the answer for the particular situation it’s a very rewarding experience. Plus he loves the personal aspect of getting to know the people he works with. The small-town, rural flavor of Kanabec County has been a perfect fit for Jere and his family. Dresser-Methven Funeral Home Serving the community for 99 years – Dresser-Methven Funeral Service The Dresser-Methven Funeral Service in Mora has been around for 99 years, making it one of the oldest, if not the oldest, business in town. Dresser-Methven Funeral Service is part of four funeral homes, the other three located in Hinckley, Sandstone and Isle. Peter Methven, Ryan Christianson, Nate Froehling and Gene Stifter operate all four funeral homes. Plans are for Christianson and Froehling to take over the business. Ninety-nine years of service to the community and over 100 years of expereince brings a lot of history. In 1912, Andrew Erickson started the original funeral service. In those days it was combined with a furniture business. Coming over from Sweden at the age of 8, Erickson worked solo for 10 years. In 1922, Claude Dresser was hired. In 1934, a separate mortuary building was built on Maple Avenue. This is the same building where the funeral home is located currently. Dresser bought the business from Erickson in 1939 and in 1948, George Olson came to Mora from Chisholm to take over the duties of the funeral director. In 1951, George bought the business when Dresser retired. He ran the funeral service, furniture business and floral/gift shop for several years, always retaining the Dresser name. Peter Methven came to East Central Minnesota in 1976 and

started in Hinckley. In 1982, the owner of the funeral home in Sandstone died. Methven bought it, and then, in 1983, bought the funeral home in Mora from George Olson. This is when it became the Dresser-Methven Funeral Service. Along with the funeral homes in Hinckley, Sandstone and Mora, Methven opened a Dresser-Methven funeral home in Ogilvie in the early 90s and started the East Central Cremation Society in Sandstone and the Isle Chapel as well. “A funeral home usually stays in a family for generations,” Methven said. “And for a long time, we were the only funeral home in Mora. Our reputation is built on our service to area families for many years.” Times have changed from when Methven first started. He said most deaths used to happen at home. Even the funeral service itself has changed. “It used to be the service followed religious rite very closely,” said Methven. “The service might consist of the reading of certain texts. Now, there’s a personalization. It’s no longer a cookie-cutter service. We try to personalize, encourage people to rearrange a service to fit their own style. People in the family write their own services, give eulogies. They bring photos and meaningful objects. We’ve had deer heads, a lawn tractor, quilts and fishing gear. What we are doing is celebrating a person’s life.”

Gene Stifter, Ryan Christianson, Peter Methven and Nathan Froehling.

He continued, “Funerals are for the living. Our job is to help and support. Most people don’t deal with death very often. We’re here to guide through the process. It can be a very difficult time.” Christianson added the most positive feeling about his profession is the thankfulness and hugs family members provide.

Limited mobility is no longer an option with equipment Princeton Mobility sells. A new business as of July 26, 2011, owner Rich Strunk is eager and passionate about providing quality mobility equipment. “I got into this business after my mother was put into assisted living,” Rich said. “While helping my mother I found out there was a need for products that made life easier and safer for her and others in assisted living.” Princeton Mobility carries a variety of products. Lift chairs, scooters, power wheelchairs, adjustable beds, rollaters and athletic braces are only to name a few. “My equipment gives people range so they can do different things,” said Rich. Princeton Mobility sells heavy duty medical equipment, including lift systems to get in and out of beds. Princeton Mobility also carries outside lift systems to haul scooters or wheelchairs on. This lift system attaches to the backside of a person’s vehicle. But the store is not only geared toward rehabilitation, it is sports-related too. “For instance, a parent of an athlete may come in with their child and purchase a brace for a sports injury. They may also look at a lift chair for mom or dad for Christmas,” Rich said. All braces and orthopedic

equipment Princeton Mobility carries is top-of-the-line. “I want to have everything in here to be of good quality,” he said. “It should work. It should fit and people should be able to use it.” Orthopedic foot inserts and sandals, with one-year warranties on the inserts, are also available. For those who break their wrist, ankle, etc., a line of products made by DRY-PRO can be slipped over a cast so the injured can easily take a shower, without getting the cast wet. This product comes in half arm, full arm, half leg and full leg, as well as a few other sizes. Mobility is the whole thing about this business. Princeton Mobility is a place to go where people can get the things they need to make their life a little easier. Rich does repair work on power chairs and also delivers. They are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays by appointment. If Princeton Mobility doesn’t have what the customer needs in stock, Rich can have it there within three to five business days. “I feel I will get a lot of satisfaction out of helping others,” said Rich. Princeton Mobility offers quality products, competitive pricing and service after the sale. All equipment sold at Princeton Mobility is about ‘home health care.’

He has had a love for motorcycles his entire life. Orrie Thompson, owner of Old Timers V-Twin Repair does exceptional work on every bike he lays hands on. His entire life has been devoted to motorcycles and he says he “just loves it.” Even at the age of 66, he can’t get enough. As a kid in the mid-50s he was surrounded by bikes. Orrie can remember riding his bike over to his uncle’s farm in Randall, Minn., which he believes was 1958. “That’s kind of how it all started,” Orrie said. “I just loved being on motorcyles.” He then started touring the country on his Cushman Eagle and it became a passion. Then in the mid-60s he built his first Triumph Bonneville show bike. In Orrie’s younger years, he was also involved with endurance races. “I had to work on my own bikes and learned all about it. With the love of bikes and working on them, I opened up my shop,” Orrie said. Orrie had a booming business until he decided to close it down in 1995 and start a cow-calf operation and horse farm in Ogilvie. After a few years, he and his wife moved to Lusk, Wyo. and started building custom saddles and hats. But even then, he still stayed with the bikes.

130 Years of Sparkle & Tradition

Stenstrom Jewelry When Louis Stenstrom immigrated to the United States from Alvdalen, Sweden, he brought with him his watch making skills but could never have imagined that seven generations later his name and business would still be flourishing in Kanabec County. Stenstrom’s Jewelry has been in existence since 1881 – the same year Kanabec County detached itself from Pine County and was organized. Louis had a son John who learned the trade from his father and when Louis died in 1904, John opened a shop in Ogilvie. John, like his father, continued the tradition and passed on his knowledge to his son Harold who took over the business in 1931. By this time the business had expanded to include not only time pieces but also jewelry, silver and glassware. In 1972, Louis’ great-grandson Dale and his wife Darla became the new owners. They ran the business together until Dale died unexpectedly in 1985. Wife Darla had been working side by side with her husband all this time and it seemed only natural that she would continue to run the

business. In the family tradition, Dale and Darla’s daughters Delayne and Deb began working in the store as soon as they were able and, no surprise, when their mother decided to sell the store in 2000 the sisters bought it. While they no longer make watches like their great-great-grandfather did, they do continue the greatest legacy which is the utmost in customer service and the very highest quality merchandise. They have been in their current location for 19 years and are proud to carry on this longstanding tradition. They continue to carry a full line of beautiful jewelry and diamonds and take distinction in seeking out the best quality for customer satisfaction. Whether it’s selling a wedding ring set to an engaged couple or replacing a watch battery, Delayne and Deb will give you their undivided attention and consultation to make sure the customer finds exactly what they’re looking for. They also do appraisals, engraving, jewelry repair, remounts and will clean and inspect your jewelry. Their store carries exquisite crystal items, baby giftware and numerous other gift ideas in all price ranges. In 2009 Delayne successfully completed the professional requirements set forth by the Jewelers of America Inc. and received the title of JA certified Senior Management Professional. Between the sisters they have seven children who all have helped out in the store just like their ancestors before them. The seventh generation of Stenstroms has been added to the family. If you’re looking for the perfect graduation, wedding, baby or anniversary gift or maybe you

want to splurge on something special for yourself, at you Stenstrom Jewelry will be sure to have what need for that special occasion. And, if they don’t carry it, they can probably find it for you. When you do business with Stenstrom’s Jewelry you’ll know why this family business is one of the oldest establishments in Kanabec County. People have long known they can trust the workmanship and good reputation of Stenstrom Jewelry and Delayne and Deb work every day to continue that tradition.

Weekly Consignment Auctions s Something for Everyone!

www.NosbuschAuctions.com

JJeff ff andd Ginger Gi Nosbusch N b h are wellll into i their hi third year of weekly auctions at their auction house, Nosbusch Auctions Inc. It’s located just a block south of the intersection of Hwy. 65 and Hwy. 70 – 5 miles south of Mora - and they are overflowing with New and Used items to sell. As folks find times tough due to the economy, more and more people are cleaning out sheds, attics, basements, garages and storage units of items they no longer use or need and are bringing them to Nosbusch Auctions for some extra cash. Jeff and Ginger have found that with a tighter economy, bidding is sometimes lower than it’s been in the past, and that people are still able to find amazing bargains. It is a great way to buy New/Used items, often for less than Wholesale prices! Jeff and Ginger have added some new features to their weekly auctions including prize drawings after every sale. Drawings have included Hats, Treats, DQ Blizzards, CASH and even tickets to local events. They continue to have once-a-month coin-only auctions, held the third Friday of the month at 6:00 p.m. In the spring they have a lawn/garden auction featuring all new lawn and garden supplies, including patio furniture. One couple came back and told them they had saved over $1,000 by buying their lawn and garden supplies at the auction. In December they will be hosting a toy auction which will provide a perfect opportunity

to buy holiday gifts, though Ginger reminds people it’s never too early to start shopping. With the constant arriving consignments, people are sure to find what they’re looking for. “People just don’t realize how much money they can save by coming to an auction. If they’re not in a big hurry, they’re sure to find the item at one of the auctions,” she said. Nosbusch Auctions holds their Weekly Consignment Auction on Saturday nights at 5 p.m. during the fall/winter and 6 p.m. during the spring/summer. They open a couple hours early for folks to look things over, and have a little something to eat before the bidding begins. Coffee is always FREE. What a great “Date Night.” Jeff and Ginger have an enthusiastic staff that helps them run the auctions. You never know what they will do, or wear, or EAT, to get a laugh or make a sale. There is never a dull moment with this gang, especally with Mike working the ring! A typical auction finds many regulars and always some new faces, with Jeff up on the block calling out bids while his ringers are busy bringing new items up and delivering sold items to happy customers. The auction goes by quickly with lots of fun, give and take. Events Catering and Concessions still provides food at each auction offering up things like taco in a bag and BBQ pork sandwiches. A

lunch/dinner special is also offered. Always FREE Coffee. Sellers (Consigners) can call any time for an appointment to bring items in for sale. Ads are printed 10 days in advance and usually do not include everything that’s going to be up for the next auction as new items are always coming in. Each week brings unexpected finds. Check NosbuschAuctions.com for the latest information - and pictures. Nosbusch Auctions can also do an on-site Auction at your location (aka Farm Auction). Call or stop in for more information. Jeff, Ginger and their helpful staff are there for both the seller and the buyer. They want to make sure everyone has a good time and is satisfied at the end of the sale. Whether you’ve got something you want to sell, or you love shopping for a good bargain, plan to come to the next Nosbusch Auction. With financial uncertainties, you might find something at the auction that you couldn’t afford to buy new, or you might find the treasure of a lifetime. As they say at the start of each auction – “Let the Fun Begin!”

Let us sell your items for you! Small & large items, one item or a whole household full of items! Nosbusch Auctions will do it all! 1381 King Rd, Mora (5 miles south of Mora on Hwy 65) • 320-679-5999

Digital Hot Shots is now in its new location at 119 South Lake Street in Mora. Professional photographer Linda L. Rother and owner Dave Mormann said they recently made the move and restructured Digital Hot Shots. Dave also purchased the building in Mora last March. “We’ve had to change with the times,” said Rother. “We downsized our space. So much of our work is outside of the studio now. Our studio was the first to change to digital in central Minnesota, now we need to adapt to the changing styles and tastes for outdoor photography. We still have a great professional indoor space; we remodeled to accommodate lighting and sets.” She explained that Mora is quite fortunate to have a commercial photography studio in town because there are only a few in a 100-mile radius. This is due to Mora supporting local businesses. “We have school contracts with four school districts and several contracts with school sports in central Minnesota,” said Rother. “With the current economy, people often don’t appreciate what a trained professional photographer knows and does. It’s really the only profession where clients don’t ask to see your qualifications,” said Rother. She said it is especially important for the photographer to know their equipment, lighting and printing. “Even with the great new digital cameras, most amateurs have very little knowledge about lighting, especially on

outdoor d shots. h Indoor d wedding dd photos h need professional strobes and high school seniors and family outdoor photos should not have dark shadows or bright sunspots on the eyes and faces.” The importance of printing and controlling color and quality is Rother’s mantra. “You cannot show off your vision and turn over the image for other shops to print for you,” she said. Rother has over 35 years of experience as a photographer with 20 years selling top-of-the-line commercial photography studio equipment and supporting 100 pro studios in the metro area. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota, with an emphasis in painting, photography and ceramics. She has attended many professional photographic educational seminars and considers learning and growing her best asset. The grants that she has been awarded from the McKnight, Jerome Foundation and East Central Regional Arts are impressive. Her travel photography spans Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Hungary, Africa, Egypt, Guatemala and Mexico. For people who get a digital disk from other photographers and want better print quality, Rother and her staff will retouch the photos and print them with high-quality custom printing for a competitive price. Rother explained that Digital Hot Shots also does lots of photo restoration and said the largest photo they can print is 24 inches wide by 100 feet. She contributes part of Digital Hot Shots’ success to her talented staff, all who have training/degrees in the visual arts and marketing.

Pet Portraits

Everything from start to finish is done in-house. Rother explained that she Packages for has had a lot of joy come out of having a studio in this community. only $ 95 “At first I was really nervous. I had Stop in for never been part of a smaller community. My graduating class was 700. My college had 50,000 details students and I lived in Minneapolis for 25 years. I really love this community. When things have been difficult for me, there has been so much support,” she said. “I’m so grateful for this community. This town is so positive and supportive of its community and people.” She continues, “I’m lucky, I get to record people’s joy. I get to bring joy to people by capturing milestones, capturing really joyful moments like weddings, reunions, babies, engagements and even pets. Every day I get to be part of that joy. I just love everything that I do. What could be better? I’ve spent my whole life working on my art,” Rother said. “How many people can say ‘I get to do something I love every day?” Digital Hot Shots invites you to share her joy by visiting her new website: www.digitalhotshots.zenfolio.com.

East Central Title, Inc. • Real Estate Closings • Title Examinations • Title Insurance • Contract for Deed Fred Holm, Attorney at Law

Since 2003 Sue Nielsen has been working in partnership with attorney Fred Holm and together with Kanabec County Abstract, the three entities have created a one-stop company designed to help consumers complete the process of property transactions. Over the years the businesses have evolved. In 2003 Fred was working as a single practitioner. He and Sue discussed the possibility of merging the staff at Kanabec County Abstract and combining skills into a new business entity and East Central Title became a reality. Sue initially owned Kanabec County Abstract and that was the primary focus of her work. In July 2010, Doris Mork, a licensed abstractor who was already working in the office, bought Kanabec County Abstract and Sue was able to concentrate her efforts on East Central Title. Sue previously had spent 25 years working as a legal assistant and that experience combined with her work at Kanabec County Abstract has given her invaluable knowledge when it comes to title searches

and examinations, title insurance and the final closing process. Sue enjoys working closely with their clients and especially likes the excellent rapport she has with her co-workers. “We all work as a team and since we are all familiar with each other’s work we can help each other out when the occasion arises,” she explains. Her favorite part of the job, however, “is seeing how happy people are when a closing is completed.” That interaction with members of the community is rewarding and fulfilling. Also working in the office are Jozie Hardy and Alice Mattson who also do closings and processing. Because all three facets of the business are located under one roof, there is no need to send things out-of-office and wait for turn around time. With an attorney leading the team, the folks at East Central Title and Kanabec County Abstract can offer a comprehensive service in a timely manner. Fred and Sue credit their success to the extraordinary and well-skilled staff of Alice and Jozie, together with an excellent working relationship with local bankers, realtors and the local community.

Kanabec County Abstract, LLC. • New Abstracts Updates • Property Reports • Name Searches • License Tax Information Doris Mork, Owner Doris Mork absolutely loves the complexity involved in abstract research. It is methodical and can be time consuming but there’s nothing she likes better than researching documents. She spends countless hours in the courthouse looking up records and investigating the background of an abstract. When the opportunity arose for her to own Kanabec County Abstract she took on the challenge with relish. Her previous experience in bookkeeping, office management and as a Realtor, along with five years working with Sue and Fred as an abstractor and bookkeeper made her the perfect candidate. Her attention to detail is second to none and she takes great pride in locating information and piecing it all together with intricate precision. “There is no room for error when working up an abstract,” she remarks, “and I just plain love making sure that every “I” is dotted and every “T” is crossed.

that is related to the property, sometimes beginning from its point of origin (the patent) to the very present. She devours court records and when she has completed her research she prepares a report for various attorneys and title companies. With the cooperative efforts of East Central Title, Kanabec County Abstract, attorney Fred Holm, and the employees, clients who bring their work to the offices will be assured of the most detailed and accurate documents needed to finalize their real estate endeavors with the utmost of professionalism and courteous, friendly service.

In her work as an abstractor she has to uncover every conveyance, every transaction and every encumbrance

O

ne of my favorite spots to stop in and visit is Mora Chevrolet Buick. As soon as I walk in, no matter who I see of their many associates, I am welcomed with a smile and greeted by my name. I usually come in for a reason, a question or an idea – and I head into my friend, Mark Masters' oďŹƒce and if I’m lucky I get to see another one of my favorite people – owner Ron Wol. One thing about sales is feeling comfortable with who you’re working with. Trust is another important factor. These folks stand behind their products and their promises. One of the goals of Mora Chevrolet is to be a committed positive entity within the community they serve. In this small town, where people really know one another, word gets around. This business knows that their growth depends on how they are perceived within the community. They believe in Mora; they care about the people here. Mora Chevrolet Buick is also a strong supporter of our local community - an unfailing member of the Mora Area Chamber of Commerce – and participates in many events including the East Central Home, Business and Community Expo for the ďŹ rst time in 2011.

UPCOMING EVENTS: For more information: call 320-679-5792 or visit

www.moramn.com

They are supporters of the Kanabec Sportsmen’s Fair, as well as a Tent Sponsor of the 2012 Vasaloppet. They also host a fun and activity-ďŹ lled Ice Fishing Clinic for our local kids coming up in late February/early March. Here you can bring your kids in to Mora Chevrolet Buick for the third year of this extremely popular event. Last year over 300 people attended and it’s sure to be even bigger this year. They will feature celebrities the likes of: Winter Fisherman Dave Genz, Clam Corporation’s Mike Smith, several Mille Lacs Guides including Mike Krone who is the parts associate at Mora Chevrolet Buick. A portable “Clamâ€? Fish House was the grand prize in 2011 and every kid who attended was given a gift bag full of great prizes! Again, in 2012 there will be giveaways during the entire time!

Bob Benes

We’re so pleased to have Mora Chevrolet Buick in town and proud to know that they share with us the importance of being involved in the community. They are a strong supportive anchor here, employing many of our local folks - all who have unique interests and backgrounds and who are teamed together for one goal, to make Mora Chevrolet Buick a successful business which is recognized favorably within the community. This they do well, but personally, it’s nice to know, I can always ďŹ nd a friendly welcome and smile whenever I walk in.

THANK YOU We would like to thank family and friends for their love and support in prayers for the last two years after the loss of our son and daughter-inlaw on New Year’s Day 2010. Karen and Gerald Moris and Family THANK YOU Don and I would like to thank all of our relatives and friends for all of their prayers and thoughtful, caring gestures during Don’s long surgery and recovery at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Sister Kenny Institute. Words cannot express the gratitude we have for ambulance crews and FirstLight staff, Neurosurgeon Dr. Uittenbogaard and his team, the staff at Abbott Northwestern and Sister Kenny, Sandy Moore, Jon Zemek, Jim Zaun, and V.F.W. Post 4258, and our wonderful family, Steve and Beth Bartheidel, Jeremy and Gail Bartheidel, Jody Lindberg and Charlie Rike. Thank you for all of your help and all the trips to see Don. God Bless you all, Don and Kathy Bartheidel THANK YOU We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone for all the prayers and support they gave to our family after the sudden loss of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Knowing that she is with our Lord and Savior and the outpouring of sympathy from everyone helped us to get through a very difficult time. Thanks to Pastor Tim for all his prayers, for the service, and for being there for our family and all the extra work he did. We thank Dan, Mike and Brady at Swanson Chapel for their compassion and helping with the arrangements. Thanks to PCEFC for allowing us to gather at the Lighthouse for fellowship and a meal. A special thanks to all who donated, prepared and served dinner. We also want to thank the special people at Journey North Church for all their help before, during and after the visitation and service. We are eternally grateful. The family of Pat Wiener

IN MEMORY Betty Odendahl July 26, 1949 - Jan. 1, 2009 In tears we saw you sinking, And watched you pass away, Our hearts were almost broken, We wanted you to stay, But when we saw you sleeping, So peaceful, free from pain, How could we wish you back with us, To suffer that again. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God took you home. Miss you, Betts Love, ‘Rie THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who attended S&O’s third annual Christmas party. It was a big success and a fun time was had by all. Also, thanks to our staff for all the goodies they provided and the extra time they spent on making the party a success. Kevin and I couldn’t do it without them. Also, thanks goes out to Eddy Pangerl, Nicole Green and Sierra Kingen for the musical entertainment. Everyone enjoyed it very much. Thank you and have a Happy New Year. THANK YOU Thank you to all the organizers of the “Dodge Hunger” dodge ball tourney to benefit the Pine Community Food Shelf. I was thrilled to hear about the plans for an athletic event to bring in food and funds to assist the food shelf during these difficult and uncertain times. Thank you to Paul Johnson and Elisa Mill for their team work and everyone else who was a planner and a participant. It was a great event that gathered 648 pounds of food and $1790.00. Again, thank you so much. The hours at the food shelf are Monday and Wednesday 10-4 and Thursday 11-7. Please call if you have questions (320) 629-0128. Julie Werner Pine Community Food Shelf
