Minnesota Firearms Deer Season Opener November 9th Hunting season has snuck up on us and is almost here. Half a million hunters are expected to take part in Minnesota’s ¿rearms deer season that begins a half hour before sunrise on Saturday, November 9th. Opening day has a special place in the hearts of many hunters. Fond memories of big bucks, hunting with family and friends, enjoying the great outdoors, and the ever popular deer camp are all established around opening day. So, are you prepared? If not, there is still time. Below are the last minute tasks you should complete before opening day. Don’t wait until 2 am just hours before you are supposed to be in the stand!

Rabbits, Squirrels

MIGRATORY BIRDS 09/21/19

.

Have Fun. Hunting is an enjoyable activity. Even if you don’t get a deer, just spending time outdoors either by yourself, or surrounded by your friends and family at the camp, this is one of the life’s greatest pleasures, especially for generations of hunters that grew up cherishing times like these.

Have a plan. Decide on the how and when. Know what you are going to do in the event of bad weather or an emergency. Planning cannot only make hunting safer, but also less stressful and more effective overall. Supplies. Have your supplies ready in advance. This means everything from food to clothing to extra ammo. Is your gun cleaned and ready? Do you know where your tag and license are?

SMALL GAME 09/14/19 - 02/29/20

Location. If you have to travel more than an hour to get to your hunting location, consider arriving the day before. This will ensure you are fully rested for your big hunt.

Final Countdown

Minnesota Firearms Deer Season Opener November 9th

Get Ready for Hunting Season T

he effective use of the legal hunting season is the best way to control deer populations. Harvesting deer during the regular archery and firearm deer hunting seasons may not solve problems completely, but it will be an important step toward long-term damage control. Other deer population control methods, such as sterilization or relocation, are not viable options in our area. NEW FOR 2019 The metro deer management zone is now deer permit area 701. Several deer permit area numbers were changed to 600-series numbers to denote CWD management status. For example, deer permit area 346 became deer permit area 646. Antler point restrictions are cancelled in all deer permit areas except 338, 339, 341 and 342. Party-hunting (also known as cross-tagging) for antlered bucks is allowed in all deer permit areas except 338, 339, 341 and 342. Hunters are allowed to harvest up to three legal bucks per year in deer permit areas 643, 645, 646, 647, 648, 649 and 655. Hunters can take one buck under an archery license, one buck under a firearms license and one buck under a muzzleloader license. Hunters are required to present deer or submit samples for CWD testing on the same day of harvest during the following seasons in these areas: • During the first two days of the A and B firearms deer seasons in deer permit areas 255, 343, and 344, and portions of deer permit areas 219, 277, 283 and 285. • During the entire firearms, archery and muzzleloader seasons in deer permit areas 604, 643, 645, 646, 647, 648, 649 and 655. Carcass movement restrictions are now in place in CWD-affected areas. The youth season will be held Oct. 17 - 20 statewide except Deer Permit Area 287 (Itasca State Park). Crossbows are no longer required to have a 30-inch stock for hunting. . FURBEARER/SMALL GAME A person legally taking coyote or fox may possess and use night vision or thermal imaging equipment. Legal firearms for taking spring and fall turkey include shotguns or muzzleloaders 10-gauge or smaller. The fisher/marten season is open Dec.

21 - 29. Fur registration will be Dec. 31. The bobcat season is open from Dec. 21 - Jan. 26, 2020. Fur registration will be Jan. 28. The river otter season closes Jan. 26, 2020. Fur registration will be Jan. 28. TRESPASS LAW The trespass law applies to all outdoor recreation, including: hunting, boating, fishing, trapping, hiking and camping. When taking part in outdoor recreation, you may not enter legally posted land or agricultural land without permission. Landowners, lessees or authorized managers need only post their land once a year. The signs must be placed at intervals of 1,000 feet (500 feet in wooded areas) or signs may be placed at primary corners of each parcel and at access points to the property. Signs must state “No Trespassing,” or similar words, in 2-inch high letters and have either the signature or the name and telephone number of the landowner, lessee or manager. There can be civil or criminal penalties for violation of the trespass laws with maximum fines up to $3,000 and license revocation. All conservation officers and peace officers enforce trespass laws. NEW-USE OF DOGS A person may use a dog to locate and retrieve a wounded deer or bear as follows: • The person attempting to locate the animal must have in possession a valid license to take the deer or bear. • Dog handlers who do not have a valid hunting license must be accompanied by a licensed hunter with the license in possession. • The licensed hunter and dog handler must be on foot and must wear blaze orange/pink. • Any light used must be an artificial light carried in the hand or attached to the person. • The dog must be on a leash no longer than 30 feet. The hunter or dog handlermust physically control the leash at all times. • The dog owner’s name and telephone number must be on the dog while it is used to locate a wounded deer or bear. place across the state to prevent concentrations of wild deer in areas with a higher risk for disease. These bans are precautionary steps the DNR took after deer that tested positive for chronic wasting disease were found both in the wild and on deer farms. Deer feeding includes: placement or distribution of salt, minerals, grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, hay and other food that is capable of attracting or enticing deer. Deer attractants are: natural or manufactured products that are capable of attracting or enticing deer, including any product that contains or claims to contain cervid urine (example “doe in heat”), blood, gland oil, feces or other bodily fluid.

HUNTING TIPS AND HOW OW TO TO FIELD FIELD JUDGE JUDGE A BUCK BUCK The antler point restriction regulations are designed to protect at ld) least half of the yearling (11⁄2-year old) buck population. • When field judging a buck, if it has a small body and thin neck, it may be a yearling. • Bring binoculars and take the time to look at the antlers and count the points before you take a shot. • Waiting for the deer to turn broadside will make it easier to count points.
