Employ helping hands during wedding planning Accepting the honor of being in a friend or family member’s wedding means more than dressing in the fancy clothing and showing up on the designated date. The wedding party - particularly the bridesmaids and groomsmen - should understand that standing alongside the happy couple generally means doing some work during the planning period as well as on the big day. It’s the wise wedding couple who can recognize the strengths of their family and friends and put those attributes to work in productive ways. • Ask and ye shall receive. First off, it is never safe to assume that the wedding party will be taking on extra work. Even if tradition suggests wedding party members lend a hand, it’s in the best interest of the couple to graciously ask for help. This helps establish good will at the start. • Be specific when assigning tasks. Rather than just asking for generalized help, make a list of the tasks that seem the most challenging and then delegate accordingly. If a member of the bridal party is excellent at getting travel deals, have him or her help arrange the honeymoon. Someone with an intimate knowledge of cuisine can come along to food tastings and help plan the reception menu. Friends with a flair for organization can be in charge of disseminating information to the entire wedding party or keeping a running list of gifts given at various parties so thankyou notes can be sent. • Make wardrobe suggestions. Couples can rely on

their most honest bridal party members when picking out wedding attire. These no-holds-barred individuals can set them straight on fit, look and comfort. Trust these people in helping to make the entire wedding party look stylish and feel confident. • Extend the host/hostess duties. It can be tiring for couples to tend to the needs of all their wedding guests. Couples can enlist the help of their wedding party to ensure that elderly or disabled guests get the assistance they need. The wedding party can also step up to serve as standin dance partners or to help grab drinks or escort people as needed. • Get the party started. Couples can usually count on their wedding parties to help fill the dance floor at the wedding reception - even when others have not yet built up the courage to showcase their dancing skills. Those bold and loveable friends and family members will help keep the energy
Should a person hear that a couple “tied the knot,” it’s immediately known that they got married. But just when and where does the term “tying the knot” come from? The phrase “tying the knot” is steeped in tradition, though the origins of the phrase remain open for debate. One origin story states that tying the knot can be traced back to the Roman empire, when brides wore girdles that were tied in knots, and the groom had to eventually untie those knots to consummate the marriage. Tying the knot also may be traced to the custom of handfasting. The marriage contract was established between a bride and a groom by joining their hands together and tying them. Although accounts vary as to whether the hands were tied only during the ceremony or later, this is believed to be an ancient Renaissance or Celtic tradition.

Others speculate that the phrase traces its origins to Hindu weddings in which brides and grooms tied a necklace of flowers as part of wedding tradition. Yet another theory suggests that the phrase can be traced back to the knotted string that supported beds prior to the use of metal springs. Therefore, in order to make a marriage bed, couples first needed to tie the knot. Knots also represent a difficult-to-break bond, which is why they have long been associated with marriage. In one unity tradition, couples may braid or knot together three strands, with one representing the bride, one symbolizing the groom and the third representing God as they join together in faith. Similarly, the phrase “getting hitched” is associated with knot-tying as well. The saying implies that two people are being tied together just like a horse is tied, or hitched, to a wagon.

5 great reasons to take engagement photos During their engagements, couples will make many decisions in regard to their weddings. Wedding planning can sometimes seem like a runaway train of appointments, schedules and deadlines. As a result, some couples do not take the time to enjoy being engaged, which is a special and unique time in their lives. Engagement photo shoots can be a unique way for couples to commemorate and enjoy the months preceding their weddings. Engagement photos memorialize the engagement and provide many additional benefits as well. 1. Engagement photo shoots give couples a chance to connect with their photographers. Booking an engagement photo shoot provides helpful information to both the couple and the photographer. The photographer gets to see how the couple interacts in front of the lens and can determine any insecurities or strengths and weaknesses couples may have. These lessons can be filed away and help make wedding day photos look better. Similarly, spending time with the photographer gives the couple an opportunity to
develop a rapport with their photographer. If couples and their photographer don’t click, scheduling an engagement shoot well in advance of the wedding gives couples a chance to find someone else to take their photos. 2. The photo shoot gives couples time to spend together and is an ideal time to spend an afternoon in a special location focusing on each other without wedding planning taking up your time. 3. Professional photographs taken before the wedding enables couples to view how they will appear in pictures. Seeing these photos might help couples grow more comfortable in front of the camera. This practice can help couples temper their anxieties prior to the wedding. An engagement shoot also can be a great time for couples to speak with their photographers about angles or styles they prefer or dislike. 4. The bride and groom have save-the-date or social media photos. Engagement photographs can be used for save-the-date cards or social media postings (check with the photographer for licensing agree-
ments). This can be a great way to spread excitement about the upcoming nuptials. 5. Photo shoots provide a chance to experiment with vivid backdrops. Engagement photography gives couples plenty of opportunities to experiment with different locales, which may not be possible come the wedding day. Engagement photography can be a worthwhile inclusion in pre-wedding celebrations.
Factors that can affect the length of your engagement Each year, millions of couples around the world tie the knot. But before couples walk down the aisle, the proposal to get married must take place. Many couples mutually agree to get engaged, while the experience may be a surprise for others who have thought about it, but may not have been sure when one partner or another would “pop the question.” Upon getting engaged, couples may ponder how long their engagement should last. There is no perfect answer, and engagement length typically depends on personal preference and
the needs of the couple. In fact, the average length of an engagement is 14.5 months. A number of factors affect the length of a couple’s engagement, and couples should not feel as if they need to hurry down the aisle. For example, couples who will be financing their own weddings may need a longer engagement than those whose parents will be chipping in. In such instances, longer engagements give couples more time to save and may help them ensure their weddings are everything they hoped for. Others may prefer a shorter engage-
ment if they are financially stable and prepared to tie the knot. Couples in their late 30s may feel the tug of a biological clock and want to ensure there is ample time to get married and have children. A shorter engagement can facilitate that. Some couples may have little choice in the matter, as the length of their engagements may be dictated by the availability of their favorite venues. Military deployment, work commitments, medical issues, or travel responsibilities also may affect the length of an engagement.
Some couples may feel that an especially lengthy engagement diminishes their excitement about getting married. That “new engagement shine” can wear off as family and friends wait months or years for the wedding to take place. Couples generally are advised to stick with what feels right to them regarding the length of their engagements. Just like all aspects of the wedding, couples can weigh the opinions of others but follow through with what works best for them.

COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS Compassionate Friends is the largest world wide grief organization. It is a support group for parents who have lost children, grandchildren and siblings. The local chapter is The Compassionate Friends of East Central Minnesota. The local chapter began meeting six years ago. They say, “We are the group no one wants to join, but we are here to honor the precious memories of the loved ones we have lost. We are their memory keepers, here to heal broken hearts and celebrate the beauty of their lives.” The group’s mission is to offer hope to those who have lost children, grandchildren and siblings. Their motto is, “You need not walk alone.” They meet from 7-9 p.m. the third Thursday of each month at St Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, 1050 Southview Ave., Braham, (but are not affi liated with any one church). The meetings are informal with sharing of stories (optional) and support for each other. Healing tears and laughter happen often. Special events include a candlelighting ceremony, a Walk to Remember and a balloon release, retreats and conferences. There are no dues. Donations help to fund special events. The Compassionate Friends website (compassionatefriends. org) was named by GoodTherapy. org at the top of the list of best 2012 resources on the internet for people experiencing grief. GoodTherapy. org includes a wide range of grief support resources. TCF has valuable resources 24/7 as well. Contact Carol, 320-396-3496, or Wendy 612-483-3928, for more information.
