Are backyard chickens right for you?
R
aising backyard chickens has been a growing phenomenon for several years. Many cities have passed laws legalizing backyard chickens, encouraging many to raise chickens as a rewarding hobby.
One of the biggest benefits to raising backyard chickens is that their eggs are fresher and often tastier than storebought varieties. Hens can lay one egg per day. Multiply that egg per hen, and breakfast is always available. One of the best ways to safeguard livestock from extreme weather is to ensure they have a place to escape the elements. Animals can get sunburned and may overheat, so make sure shelters can block the sun’s rays on hot days while also allowing for air to circulate through the dwelling. Another benefit to chickens is they produce a natural fertilizer that can be used in gardens. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says chicken manure can be composted, aged and eventually added to the garden. In about six months, a person will accumulate about one cubic foot of manure per chicken. Egg shells and other compostable material can be added to create an even richer formula. Chickens also can help control bugs around the yard, offers the experts at Tractor Supply Company. Before investing in backyard chickens, people should determine if chickens will fit with their lifestyle. Costs and care are a big consideration.
chickens may succumb to predators. Squeamish or sentimental folks may find chickens aren’t the right fit. Chickens require commitment and care that many people can provide. It is essential to do one’s homework to ensure that backyard chickens are a sound investment.

Each chick will cost anywhere between $3 to $5 a bird. Then there’s feed to consider. The most expensive item will likely be the coop. The experts at The Happy Chicken Coop, a resource for raising chickens and starting coops, says handy men and women can build homemade coops, but ready-made ones will cost a few hundred dollars. The coop will need to offer around four square feet of space per chicken (or what’s recommended for the breed). Despite being seemingly independent birds, chickens need people to be active caregivers. They require feed and water daily. The chickens will need a caregiver while you vacation. People who are frequently away from home should reconsider chickens. Chickens also are prone to worms, parasites and lice. They need to have rear feathers trimmed to stay clean and sanitary, and they will require an area where they can “dust” and self-groom. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises not to cuddle and kiss chickens like pets because they can carry salmonella. Not every coop is completely varmint-proof, and some

What Not To Do When Served With Divorce Papers... By Scott Berry — Berry Law Offices
Just as important as what you should when served with divorce papers is what you shouldn’t do. That is because taking impulsive actions when you are feeling the emotions that accompany receipt of divorce paperwork can negatively affect your case. Although some items on this list appear obvious, it is a good reminder when you are upset. 1. Don’t threaten or hit the opposing party. Yes, it is obvious, but domestic violence happens regularly in instances where divorce papers are served. Threats and domestic abuse will put the abuser at a distinct disadvantage. At best, it will cause animosity in the case and make it more difficult to either litigate or attempt to resolve the divorce or custody matter. At worse, criminal charges can be brought against the abuser.

2. Don’t attempt to hide or sell assets. Minnesota law provides that if the parties are contemplating divorce, they are not allowed to transfer assets. Doing so can result in sanctions against the transferring party. 3. Don’t cancel your spouse’s health insurance (or any insurance). Upon service of the summons initiating the divorce, the parties are prohibited from making modifications to any type of insurance. 4. Don’t put your children in the middle. Court’s take a dim view of a party who places their children in the middle of a divorce. Moreover, doing so is directly contrary to the Minnesota Best Interest factors resulting in great harm to the parent’s chances of getting the custody resolution that they want. 5. Don’t go post about it on Facebook. Statements on social media as well as inappropriate pictures can cause significant problems down the road in a divorce case. Bottom line, Facebook and other social media posts play an important role in the litigation of a divorce – usually negatively. 6. Handling a divorce case in the most sensible manner can go a long way towards getting the most favorable outcome from the Court.

MONDAY PRIME TIME Below are last week’s most read stories on the Kanabec County Times website, www.MoraMinn.com. 1.Storm winds wreak havoc: Tornado warning sirens sounded as a fierce storm with high winds and baseball-sized hail tore through Kanabec and Pine counties on the afternoon of Friday, July 19. While structural damage in Mora and Ogilvie was minimal, the worst hail and wind damage was south of Pine City in the Rock Creek area. (1,026 pageviews) 2. Letter to the editor: Vote no times two: November is election month. This November our school board is planning to present another school referendum, again asking you for another tax increase. I encourage you to vote no to both options – and save our high school the way we saved our historic Kanabec County Courthouse 21 years ago. (189 pageviews) 3. Top Mora employers remain in healthcare, education, government: Employment within the city of Mora follows statewide trends with the highest percentage of employment within the education and health services industries.
