Taste and service you won’t forget - Downtown Deli offers new dinner menu, Æne dining No need to drive an hour or two for fine dining or a date night with your significant other. Located just off Union Street and directly south of the Vasaloppet headquarters, Downtown Deli is anything but ordinary, especially when it comes to their service and their Espresso bar, full breakfast, lunch and brand new dinner menu! Downtown Deli owner Denise Nordstrom says their new evening dinner menu will change every three to four months. Offering a variety of tempting dishes. Sirolin Tip Saute, Parmesan Tilapia with Basil Cream and Salmon will be a few dinner specialities. Some of the more popular lunch sandwiches will still be offered in the evening. Wine enthusiasts should most certainly try out their selection of wines, including their Jack Tone house wine from McMannis Vineyards, in both red and white. Other than the house wine, bottle wines change with the season. This fall Downtown Deli is featuring two red wines, 9-Stones Shiraz and Las Vides Malbec,Villa Wolf Riesling and McMannis Chardonnay for white wine. Same goes for their beer selection. Sam Adams Irish Red, Fat Tire, and Leinenkugels Sunset Wheat are this fall’s warm and rich selections, with Strawberry Acai Smirnoff Ice for an alternative choice.
Homemade soups, specialty salads and flavordripping sandwiches and melts are some of the staples on their lunch menu. Nordstrom says they are known for their Creamy wild rice soup, but some of her favorites are Mushroom Brie, Squash with Thyme and Italian Tomato. “We also have heavier soups like Split Pea, Chicken Dumpling, Hungarian Pottage and Mediterranean Chicken,” said Denise. Most of their soups are homemade. Denise says even if she finds a recipe, she ends up tweaking it somehow. Most often she just combines great flavors together. “I love food. I love flavor,” Denise said. “I strive to use healthy, natural foods and ingredients. You can eat just the way it is. We purchase much of our produce daily, and most of our breads come from local bakeries. I really want the Deli to be known for its good food that’s good for you.” Each week features a different sandwich and salad special. Strawberry Asparagus, Apple Gorgonzola, Parmesan Sunshine and Wild Rice Salad are a few customer favorites. Their most popular sandwich special, according to Downtown Deli manager Jennifer Nordstrom, is the Chicken Pesto Melt. Others include the Beef and Mozzarella Wrap, Chicken Chipotle Melt and our Deluxe Grill. “Downtown Deli is just so unique for a small
Daytime Menu
town, from its food to its atmosphere,” said Jennifer, Denise’s daughter. Downtown Deli is open Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday thru Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday thru Friday, Downtown Deli serves wine and beer with tables dressed in white linens. Saturdays the Deli is open 7 to 11 a.m. and serves mainly breakfast. Downtown Deli does take-out orders, delivers within city limits and is also available for catering. Currently they have five to six part-time employees. Downtown Deli seats approximately 50 people. People can also rent the building out for baby showers, small family gatherings, as well as the back room for small parties or meetings seating at least 10 and a maximum of 15. “Denise is the heart and soul of the business,” said Jennifer. “She truly cares about every customer that walks through the door.” Downtown Deli is a family-owned and run business. Denise has owned the business for 11 years and has been in the food service industry her entire career. “I love caring for people,” Denise said, “and creating really good food.”

HARBOR ROOM OFFERS FREE YOGA CLASS The Harbor Room Cancer and Chronic Conditions Resource Center is offering a free six-week series of gentle yoga instruction. The “Breathe, Stretch, Relax” class will be held on Tuesdays from 10:30–11:30 a.m. beginning Jan. 24 and continuing through Feb. 28. The class will be held at WillowBridge Center in Cambridge. WillowBridge Center/Haven DayCenter for Seniors/Total Wellness Coaching is generously donating the space for the class and the instructor, Amy Jensen, is donating her time. Anyone affected by cancer, in any way, is invited to attend— whether a patient or a family member or supportive friend of someone with cancer. There are a limited number of openings for this class so early registration is recommended. To register, call Bonnie at the Harbor Room at 763-688-8415 (do not contact WillowBridge Center). NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH January is National Blood Donor Month and above all other times of the year, it is the month that presents the most challenges for blood collection. Changing weather, busy holiday schedules, increased cold and flu symptoms and even the winter blues can keep the most dedicated blood donors from making or keeping an appointment to give. This January is no exception with the local Red Cross in need of blood donations. To donate blood, simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. Local opportunities include:

www.cavallinford.com Kanabec County, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, at Zion Lutheran Church, 401 Hwy. 65S, Mora. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. FARM SERVICE AGENCY TAX INFORMATION Kanabec County producers annually receive CCC-1099-Gs detailing payments producers have received from the Commodity Credit Corporation. This will once again take place for the payments earned in 2011. The annual report of program payments on CCC-1099-Gs is a service intended to help our customers report taxable income. It is not intended to replace the producers’ responsibilities to report income to IRS. These forms are mailed from Kansas City and are not available to the Kanabec County office. They have until Jan. 31 to mail producers this form so if you have received any payment from the Commodity Credit Corporation you can be expecting this form between now and early February. FSA staff cannot interpret IRS regulations or advise producers about which payments to report on their income tax returns. However, county office staff can review payments for accuracy or clarify any discrepancies. If you have any questions when you receive your CCC-1099-G please

President Obama’s Accomplishments (Despite Republican obstructionism)
✰ Signed into law an economic plan that saved America from a depression, restored growth, and created or saved as many as 3.6 million jobs. ✰ Signed into law landmark health insurance reform that holds insurance companies accountable, gives people and small businesses greater control of health care, and improves the quality of health care for all Americans. ✰ Fought against Wall Street lobbyists to sign into law historic consumer protections and financial reforms that shield American families from unfair lending practices from credit card and mortgage companies, rein in the excesses of Wall Street, and work to prevent future financial crises. ✰ Reformed the college loan system by ending subsidies to banks and using the money
to make college more affordable. He also invested in community colleges that are providing Americans with the skills they need to succeed in today’s economy.
