Autopsy comes FOCUS Program to life at MHS
DECEMBER 2011 www.mora.k12.mn.us
FAMILY NIGHT... VOTE to learn!
The FOCUS program at Mora High School consists of approximately 45 students that are in need of academic support. Students in grades 9-12 are identified through our Student Assistance Team by examining students’ achievement, attendance, and emotional/social growth. Once a student is identified as needing support in those areas, the student is asked to join the FOCUS program. Students in the FOCUS program have to be willing to accept direction and make changes in their academic lives.
Students interacting with Ray Vollmer, professor at St.Louis School of Medicine, as he starts to explain the process of autopsy and what the students can expect when he reveals the human cadaver.
At MHS students enrolled in a forensic science class got a real taste of the medical examination process. Students have been studying the effects on the human body after death and the process that ties into forensic science and solving crimes. Through ECMECC funding and the help of Jon Larson, the students in Ms. Fenstad’s class got the opportunity to see a simulated autopsy through St. Louis University School of Medicine. The presentation came through using video conferencing where both the students and the instructor in St. Louis could hear and see each other. The students followed the professor at SLU watching him as he showed the process of an autopsy on a real cadaver and what medical examiners actually do. And no, it’s not like what you see on TV. The students were able to view the inside of the corpse and got the opportunity to see how evidence for an autopsy is collected and ways to determine the manner, cause, and mechanism of death.
Grand Canyon Distance Learning
Mr. Goebel’s fifth-grade homeroom had the opportunity to do a Distance Learning program with the Grand Canyon National Park on Nov. 30. “We are learning about environments and ecosystems this quarter in science. The Grand Canyon offers a great hour-long program that takes you inside the canyon and the living and nonliving factors that make up the environment,” said Mr. Goebel. The Grand Canyon is the perfect place to learn about different ecosystems. It is one of the most diverse places on earth because it is a relatively small area but it is made up of five different ecosystems. The students were put into groups and each was assigned an ecosystem to research. During the presentation each group presented the information they learned about what makes their ecosystem unique. Mr. Goebel’s class will be participating in another program with the Grand Canyon called, “Layers in Time” on Dec. 6. This presentation will focus on the rock layers that make up the canyon. It is the hope of the fifth-grade staff to try and have all fifth-graders experience this great learning opportunity.
The FOCUS program is proud to announce six students that earned the honor of being in the FOCUS programs 3.0 GPA club for first quarter. Those six students worked diligently throughout the quarter with feedback given on daily homework to achieve this honor. These students consist of three seniors, Tiffany, Kirstie, and Faith; two juniors, Kristin and Jerry; and one freshman, Amber. Congratulations to those six students! The FOCUS program also had one student improve his GPA by 127 percent.
Parents and their children had time to work on THINK Central (technology component for the new math series, Expressions, K-5) and learn about literacy strategies to help their child at home.
Thanks for your kindness!
Congratulations to Jerry for his success! Fourteen new students were added to the FOCUS program this school year, and according to GPA data they increased their overall GPA average by 35 percent. A job well done to all FOCUS students for making gains in their academic success at Mora High School!
Raising Monarchs This fall the Junior High Alternative Program had the opportunity to raise over 40 monarch butterflies in the classroom. The students received the monarchs as tiny dots on the bottom of milkweed leaves and raised their monarchs from tiny eggs, through the caterpillar and chrysalis stage to an adult butterfly. The students shared the process with the rest of the school by strategically placing the monarchs in classrooms and offices around the building. On their daily visits to take care of their monarchs they were available to answer questions about the process. Academically the students kept journals, made measurements, graphed their data, drew pictures, did research and learned some geography. Each time we released a butterfly our thoughts were with it on its long journey south to Mexico.
During the month of November Fairview students have been discussing ways to be thoughtful to others. Thanksgiving is a perfect time to put our ideas into action. Three first-grade classrooms proudly donated many food items for our local food shelf. Pictured are students representing the classrooms of Mrs. Gmahl, Mrs. Lukenbill and Mrs. Pulford.
Mustang Award Kyle C. and Jennifer Erickson after he helped present her with the Mustang Award last Friday morning at the staff meeting.
December Healthy Snack Cart - Mystery Smoothie Fairview students who participate in the Healthy Snack Cart have been treated to Healthy Smoothies once a month this year. For December, the smoothie was a “Mystery Smoothie”! Students tried to guess the “secret” ingredient in the Mystery Smoothie. The smoothie was a “Christmas Green” in color, and had two pretty red raspberries on top. Many students guessed the secret ingredient to be Kiwi..... only to be surprised when they heard it was actually SPINACH!!!! The large majority of students loved the spinach/banana/peach smoothies. Recipes were made available to those who wanted to try the smoothies at home. Fairview staff and students send a huge “Thank You” to the volunteers who came in to make the smoothies and who help promote healthy snacks for our students!

Moving out of your home may not be your only choice.
Merry Christmas From Heaven
You can get help to look at all of your options. There are many questions you may need answers to before you make the choice to move into an assisted living setting. Can services you need be brought to your home instead of moving? Could you keep your resources longer if you remain in your own home? Call the Senior LinkAge Line® to help you get the answers you need to help you remain in your own home and to request a free copy of the Senior Housing and Services Guide.
I still hear the songs I still see the lights I still feel your love on cold wintery nights
You don’t have to be perfect all of the itme He forgives you the slip If you continue the climb
I still share your hopes and all of your cares I’ll even remind you to please say your prayers
To my family and friends please be thankful today I’m still close beside you In a new special way
I just want to tell you you still make me proud You stand head and shoulders above all the crowd
I love you all dearly now don’t shed a tear Cause I’m spending my Christmas with Jesus this year.
Keep trying each moment to stay in His grace I came here before you to help set your place

Happy Holidays
FROM ALL OF US
When the Family Circle is Broken at Christmas During this holiday season, a time of joy for most of us, our thoughts turn to the families of our community who are facing their first Christmas without someone they loved. We know many of them, and maybe you do, too. Or you may remember a year when you yourself dreaded the holidays because a death during the year had broken your family circle. As funeral service professionals, we know that grief is especially hard to bear during the holidays. The thoughtful gesture of a compassionate friend can mean a lot to a bereaved individual or family. Caring about someone, and letting them know you care, is the essence spirit. ce of the Christmas spi p rit.

Mora, Minn. – Villa Health Care Center announced it will be changing its name to St. Clare Living Community of Mora. Over the past few months, employees, residents, family members, volunteers and community leaders worked to develop a new name and identity for Villa Health Care Center. “The challenge for the group was to find a name that would reflect on our continuum of care, our devotion to quality, our Mission and our closer relationship with the Benedictine Health System,” said Jack L’Heureux, administrator/CEO. “Effective on Jan., 1, 2012, we are excited to say our new name will be St. Clare Living Community of Mora.” “We feel our new name and logo communicates what we wanted in our new identity for the future,” L’Heureux explained. St. Clare of Assisi left a life of wealth to
pursue a life of service. Our Mission calls us to serve those in need in our community. As a Living Community, people will know that we offer more than just nursing home care. St. Clare Living Community of Mora offers skilled nursing and respite care, inpatient rehabilitation, assisted living, and home care. “Although we have a different name and a new look, our dedicated employees will continue to provide award winning quality, compassionate care to all in our community as we have for the past 42 years,” L’Heureux added. A formal unveiling of the new name and logo will be held on Dec., 15 with the employees and residents joining in the celebration. For more information about the services offered by St. Clare Living Community of Mora, go to www.bhshealth.org.
