COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FACILITIES UPDATE Monday, March 26 • 6:30pm The Mora School Board will host a Community Engagement Meeting to receive input about the proposed facilities plans to improve the safety, efficiency and educational programs within Mora Schools. At this meeting several different options for these improvements will be presented, and we want to hear from as many residents as possible about these options.

Community members, parents and educators have worked hard for the past five months to analyze our schools’ needs in order to continue to provide a great education. We appreciate all of the participation we have received thus far, and we encourage any interested citizen to stop by, listen to the options and provide input.

THANK YOU Dear Family and Friends, Thank you for taking time to attend Tom’s memorial service and/or to send your sympathies. Losing Tom has been difficult for all of us, so your prayers, love, concern and gifts have been deeply felt and appreciated.

We are thankful for the support of family and friends, the Mayo Clinic Health System, Allina Home and Community Services, Dr. Teigs and Dr. Herrmann and all those who gave Tom such excellent care.

The memorial service was a wonderful tribute to Tom. A special “thank you” to Steve and Mary Frost at Bruzek Funeral Home for their kindness and to Chaplain Bob Raleigh for his words of comfort. In addition, thank you to everyone who attended, the New Prague American Legion Post No. 45, the Color Guard, and those who shared thoughts and memories of Tom. Thank you to those who prepared Tom’s favorite birthday meal; it was a pleasure to continue celebrating Tom’s life together after the service.

MADONNA L. PANKONIN Madonna Louise Pankonin of Brook Park died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge after courageously battling illnesses since the age of 7.

She was born on Oct. 6, 1930, in Heron Lake to Louis and Lucille (Radel) Balling. She was the eldest of 10 children.

She was united in marriage to Lowell Luverne Pankonin on June 13, 1947. Four children were born of this union; Roger, Dennis, Eileen and Peggy. They lived in Nowthen, St. Francis, and Heron Lake before settling in Brook Park in 1971.

Besides being a homemaker, she worked for Anoka State Hospital, a restaurant in Anoka and at Fingerhut Manufacturing in Windom, sewing car coats until she was injured on the job. Later in life many knew her for selling Princess House, Sarah Coventry and Avon. She has always had a love of nature and enjoyed planting trees, flowers and raising a large vegetable garden each year.

She canned the majority of her harvest and generously shared it with family and friends. She loved to feed the birds and other wildlife that came into her yard.

She also enjoyed painting, sewing, fishing and hunting. She had

many favorite outings - Birthday Club with her many “women” friends, family reunions with her many relatives, cookouts with the kids, and was a welcome figure at the various local coffee spots in Mora. She was always ready and willing to help family and friends.

She had a caring heart and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Lucille Balling; husband, Lowell Pankonin, brothers, Curtis and Richard Balling; sister, Betty Thompson; grandson, Scott Sutherland; and granddaughter, Deana Pankonin.

She is survived by two sons, Roger (Phyllis) Pankonin of Brook Park, Dennis (Linda) Pankonin of Mora; two daughters, Eileen (Duane) Carlson of Isanti, and Peggy Avila of Denton, Texas; six grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; five brothers, Bernard (Diane) Balling of Milbank, S.D., Maynard (Helen) Balling of Courtland, Ohio, Carroll (Vicki) Balling of Royalton, Gerald (Nancy) Balling of Bovey, Mark (Lana) Balling of Pengilly; and one sister, Colleen (Glenn) Fisk of Royalton; plus many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Funeral service was held on March 16 at Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora.

Rev. Linda Fouts officiated.

Honorary pallbearers were Scott Sutherland, Arthur Avila, Gabe Pankonin, Heather Coleman, Becky Baumann, Jessica Raymond, Garey Pankonin and Deana Pankonin.

Inurnment will be at a later date at Red Rock Cemetery in Jeffers.

Arrangements were handled

by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral and Cremation Services of Mora.
