MARCH 18 NALAH AND THE PINK TIGER Children ages pre-K through grade five are invited to the Mora Public Library at 11 a.m. for a free interactive puppet show by author-puppeteer, Sawyer-Aitch who wrote “Nalah and the Pink Tiger” which is also the basis of the show. Th is program is part of the Once Upon a Reader program for children pre-K and their families which focuses and promotes children’s literature in Minnesota.

CORA J. MORGENWECK Cora Julia Morgenweck of Ogilvie died in her home on Tuesday, March 88, 2016. She was 79 years old.

She was born April 14, 1936 to Ray aand Mamie (Dee) Luglan in a cabin oon Ann Lake. She attended school D District No. 60 in Ann Lake Township aand graduated from Ogilvie High SSchool in 1954.

After graduation she went to St. P Paul to work and later worked at Carggill as a secretary. On May 13, 1955 sshe was united in marriage to Arnold M Morgenweck of Ogilvie. They lived iin Minneapolis until 1962 when they p purchased her home farm and they llived there the rest of her life.

She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served on the alter guild for many years. She enjoyed working in the garden and with her flowers. She did a lot of canning, cooking and baking. She enjoyed trips to the Grand Ol’ Opry and Branson, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant daughter.

She is survived by husband of more than 60 years, Arnold; children, Joan (Dan) Fladebo of St. Stephen, Julie (Mike) Terpstra of St. Stephen, Jerry (Heidi) Morgenweck of Ogilvie, Jim Morgenweck of Mora, Keith (Amy) Morgenweck of Oakdale; grandchildren, Todd, Lisa, Bobby, Ricky, Jennifer, Ashley; great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Zoe, Eve, Austin, Chase, Deysia; sister, Hellen (Lloyd) Carda of Ogilvie; brother-in-law, Don (Irene) Morgenweck of St. Louis Park; other relatives and friends.

Her funeral service was held on Friday, March 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ogilvie with Rev. Marc Freiberg Sr. Music was provided by Donna Angermeier.

Pallbearers were Todd Fladebo, Bob Terpstra, Rick Terpstra, Mike Dreher, David Carda and Deidrich Dee. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.

Arrangements were handled by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.

very autumn, trees and shrubs take on their brilliant display of reds, oranges, purples, and yellows that mark the end of the growing season. Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure.

The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples, oaks and other trees near homes will eventually fall as autumn turns into winter. Some will float down to lawns, while others will get lodged in gutters and downspouts, posing problems that can cause substantial and potentially costly problems for homeowners.

Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why.

Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off. Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in advance of the winter.

Gutters guide rainwater and runoff from the roof so it drains properly away from homes. When gutters are clogged with leaves, a number of problems can occur.

• Leaks: Water will take

the path of least resistance.

When clogged gutters do not allow the water to drain away properly, water will find other ways to the ground. It may work itself right into the walls and ceilings of the home. In addition to damaging walls and ceilings, moisture inside the home can promote mold growth. It also makes interior spaces more appealing to pests.

• Excess weight: Gutters are meant to hold the weight of traveling water and not much more. Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely.

• Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve as nesting areas for insects and birds. Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for harmful pests.

Furthermore, birds may nest in gutters, creating unsightly messes and more damage.

• Foundation trouble: Clogged gutters also may contribute to flooded basements and cracked foundations. Leaking water will pool around the foundation, expanding when frozen and causing cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also can cause driveways and other cement areas around the home to sag and crack.

Gutter cleaning should be scheduled in the spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire gutter-cleaning services to handle the job or do the job themselves. Rinse the gutters with water from the hose afterward to ensure good run-off. Take the time to seal any leaks as well. Proper maintenance of cooling systems is essential to saving energy and keeping utility costs down. Fortunately, homeowners need not be certified HVAC technicians to maintain their cooling units.

Routinely replacing or cleaning filters is one of the most important maintenance tasks to improve airflow and increase efficiency. The U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy says replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower an air conditioner’s energy consumption by anywhere from 5 to 15 percent.

• Inspect system coils. The evaporator and condenser coils on air conditioners can collect dirt, even when filters are maintained. Dirty coils are less efficient at absorbing heat, so periodically remove the dirt. Outdoor coils can be kept cleaner by cutting back foliage from the unit to allow better air flow.

• Inspect condensate drains. Energy.gov also suggests making sure condensate drains, which take moisture pulled from the air away, are functioning properly. If they’re clogged, they may not be effective at reducing humidity in a home, and they may even leak.

• Know the square footage. When replacing a cooling system, have an understanding of the size of your home (or room if installing a window unit). Determine the area of the

• Clear debris. Remove fallen leaves or other plant material from condenser units and fan blades. Obstructed components can cause the system to retain heat, compromising its ability to work effectively. Some homeowners prefer to cover their condensers at the end of the cooling season to keep leaves and dirt out of the unit.

• Check window unit seals. When installing window units, make sure all seals around the air conditioner are in place to prevent cool-air loss.

• Hire a technician. Air conditioner technicians can be very helpful and will know how to prepare a system for hot weather. Technicians typically conduct multipoint inspections and measure such things as refrigerant levels and duct leakage. Airflow through the evaporator coil also may be checked. If a homeowner suspects the thermostat is not working properly, a technician can verify if that is true and even install a new one if necessary.

Home Improvement Going solar is on the rise R

ising energy costs and a growing desire to live more eco-friendly lifestyles has spurred interest in solar panels to power our homes.

Although solar panels have been around for quite some time, only recently have homes cloaked in panels aimed at capturing the rays of the sun begun to be so visible.

Solar companies are now installing one solar system every four minutes. If the market continues to grow at this pace, through 2016 there will be a system installed every 20 seconds.

These gains in the solar industry may have been spurred on by the Solar Investment Tax Credit, which the SEIA says has helped to lower the cost of solar energy by more than 73 percent.

How does solar energy work?

Solar energy is turned into electric power through the photovoltaic (PV) cells located in the solar panels. The PV cells transform sunlight into direct electric current. An inverter built into the system converts the DC electricity into the alternating current (AC) that powers homes. The AC is sent to the home’s electrical panel and used to power lights and other devices.

What happens at night?

Unless a home is self-contained and off the grid, the average homeowner will not have to worry about night usage or batteries to store energy. He or she will continue to use energy off of the traditional electrical system at night. Many electrical costs will be offset by the amount of extra solar energy put back into the grid. There are a variety of programs, and some homeowners may even reverse

bills further based on how much electricity is generated.

Solar panel needs Although it is ideal to have a south-facing location for panels, this is not an absolute necessity. Positioning solar panels to face west or south will work, and even southeast-, eastand north-northwest-facing panels can produce adequate energy savings.

The type of roof may affect costs. Solar panels will not harm the roof when installed correctly, but ornate Spanish tiles or other roofing material may increase solar panel installation costs. Many homeowners find that the solar panels protect the roof from extreme weather, heat and cold, providing an extra bonus to solar energy.
