MINNESOTANS WORKING ON SPRING YARD PROJECTS REMINDED TO CALL 811 BEFORE DIGGING Planting a tree? Putting in a new mailbox? Building a deck? The Minnesota Office of Pipeline Safety is reminding Minnesotans to call 811 at least two business days before they dig. The Gopher State One-Call center is still operational as an essential business. Minnesotans can also submit a ticket online.
Mora Municipal Utilities will be flushing hydrants beginning Monday, May 4, and will continue until finished.
STATE FIRE MARSHAL: SPRING CLEANING? CLEAN DRYER VENTS State Fire Marshal Jim Smith is reminding Minnesotans doing spring cleaning while staying at home to pay attention to their dryer vents and lint traps. Lint buildup could cause serious problems, including a house fire. It’s important to go beyond cleaning the removable screen in the dryer. Lint can collect under the dryer and inside the exhaust tubing that travels from the dryer to the home’s exterior of your home.
Residents may notice some discoloration in their water during this time and are cautioned to avoid washing clothes until the water clears.

HWY 47 WORK BEGINS MN DOT Motorists who travel Highway 47 from Isle to Ogilvie will encounter delays beginning Monday, April 27 when the highway closes for six months for a reconstruction project. Highway 47 will close to through traffic between Highway 27 in Woodland and Highway 23 in Ogilvie on Monday, April 27 through mid-October. The detour uses Highway 23 in Ogilvie, Highway 65 in Mora and Highway 27 to Woodland. Highway 47 will remain open to those who live, work or visit a resident or business along the closed road. However, some work will require temporary hard closures to replace underground pipes and two bridges. Expect changes, gravel surfaces, reduced speed, flaggers and a pilot car. For updated road condition information, call 511 or visit www.511mn.org. PINE CITY GARAGE SALE CANCELED The annual Pine City Garage Sale, which had been scheduled for Saturday, May 9, has been canceled – with hopes to reschedule the event later on in the year.

Ogilvie High School staff recently went door to door to deliver a Class of 2020 sign to all graduating seniors to recognize and support them during this distance learning period. Seniors are missing some pretty significant and important milestones their senior year. This gesture of support lets them know how much we care and that we truly are “in this together” as our sign says to our seniors. Pictured are Kelsi Olson and high school principal, Sue Davis.
DAVID R. BLUM MARCH 28, 1949 — APRIL 14, 2020
David Roy Blum, of Mora, died on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, surrounded by family and in the comfort of his home, after a four year battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was 71 years old. He was born on March 28, 1949, at Kanabec Hospital to David L. and Marlys (Johnson) Blum. They lived in the Kroschel area where he attended countryy school until the fourth grade, when his parents moved to a home north of Ann Lake. He then attended the Ogilvie Public School, graduating in 1967. Upon graduation, he briefly lived with an aunt and uncle in Blaine, while working at Larson Chevrolet in Minneapolis as a car runner and detail man. In May 1968, he volunteered to serve and joined the U.S. Army. He attended basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, advanced infantry training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and officer candidate school at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he received his commission as second lieutenant and served as a tactical officer. On Sept. 13, 1969, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Louie (Betty Lou) Lesher, while on leave. They lived in base housing at Fort Benning until he was deployed to Vietnam in December of 1969. While in Vietnam, he was promoted to first lieutenant and served as a platoon leader of 1st Platoon, Delta Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, American Division. He was wounded twice, with the second incident resulting in his return to the U.S. where he spent several months at Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for heroism in ground combat. Following honorable discharge in February of 1971, he and his wife bought a small farm in Ann Lake Township, where they would eventually raise their two children, Chris and Kelsey. He worked for the Kanabec County Highway Department for 40 years, beginning on the survey crew and retiring as the assistant engineer in 2011. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ogilvie, the Mora American Legion Post and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. He also served on the Ann Lake Township Board for over 40 years. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, raising black Angus beef cattle and watching his kids’ activities as they grew up. He also loved listening to music, cooking, gardening, making wonderful salsa and spending time with family and friends. He was an adoring and enthusiastic “Grandpa Dave” to his grandchildren, a proud and loving father to his children and a loving, devoted husband and caregiver to his wife of over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marlys. He is survived by his loving wife, Louie; children, Chris (Brooke) and Kelsey (Caleb Szydlo); grandchildren, Bergen and Peter; father, David L. Blum; brother, Donnie (DeeDee); many other relatives and friends; and his faithful dog, Gus. He was dearly loved and will be missed beyond words. His spirit will live in our hearts forever. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. Arrangements are by the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.

We’ll be offering sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 10:30 a.m. Visit the East Central Regional Library Facebook page, and together we will read books, sing songs, have fun and develop early literacy skills. We invite families to have their shakers/rattles and scarves ready to wave, bounce and wiggle. LIBRARY OFFERS ELEARNING Personalized homework help in the core subjects of math, reading, writing, science and social studies, including SAT preparation, is now available through your local library. It’s called Brainfuse HelpNow, and all library patrons need is a computer with internet connection. Included in the HelpNow suite is the Adult Learning Center, which gives adult learners access to GED prep, U.S. citizenship test prep, resume assistance, Microsoft Office support, and Career Resources, which lists popular job search links. HelpNow provides different learning solutions for students of diverse needs and backgrounds. Students communicate with live, online tutors using an interactive, virtual whiteboard to chat, write, draw, copy/paste text or images and graph homework problems. To access this free service, visit ecrlib.org. Learners also can build their skills and prepare for tests through HelpNow. After taking a quiz, for instance, students can then connect directly with a live tutor to review the topics and questions covered
in the quiz. Both student and tutor can view the quiz questions before the student goes on to answer an intensive test prep, which may include loading lessons onto a whiteboard. All live tutoring sessions are saved and can be replayed and even shared with friends and teachers. For students who prefer to work independently and form their own online study group, HelpNow offers a set of collaborative tools.
