Agriculture and forestry can provide mutual benefits

M

ay is Arbor Month, but it isn’t just foresters who get to celebrate! Did you know that trees can be incorporated in many agricultural systems? The intentional integration of trees or shrubs with crops and animals in the same area is called agroforestry, and it results in a more diverse agricultural operation, increased profits and conservation habitat improvement.

Agroforestry requires putting the right tree in the right place for the right reason.

When you get the formula right the rewards can be tremendous, including: protected topsoil, healthier livestock, increased crop yield, better wildlife habitat, reduced energy and chemical inputs, improved water quality and increased water-use efficiency. These are just a few of the potential benefits of agroforestry.

If you’re interested in agroforestry, there are five agroforestry practices that can be considered for your working lands.

Windbreaks are single or multiple rows of plantings that provide shelter from wind, snow, dust or odors. Windbreaks save energy and cut home heating costs.

They also net big gains in carbon storage,

improve income by increasing crop yields and protect livestock from heat and cold stress.

Riparian forest buffers are plantings located next to waterways that help protect aquatic resources by filtering farm runoff and preventing soil erosion. Buffer areas can support wildlife habitat, produce crops, improve water quality and reduce flood damage.

Forest farming grows and protects highvalue specialty crops under the forest canopy. Existing forest is thinned to leave the best canopy trees for continued timber production while creating ideal growing conditions for the understory crop. Nontimber forest products grown using forest farming methods don’t just provide an additional source of income, they also help conserve habitat for wildlife.

Silvopasture is the intentional management of forage, livestock and trees on the same acreage. The trees in a silvopasture provide shade and shelter for livestock while benefiting forage production and improving carbon sequestration. This combination can also bring in extra income from timber, livestock and other non-timber forest products. There are even opportunities for income from recreation.

The USDA supports agricultural producers through a new five-year agroforestry strategic framework, which is a roadmap to advance agroforestry resources and provide assistance to landowners for productive and healthy farms, ranches, woodlands and communities. The strategic framework document plus more information about agroforestry is found at the USDA National Agroforestry Center and the University of Minnesota Extension Agroforestry website.

Alley cropping is a system in which crops are grown between rows of widely spaced trees or shrubs, called alleyways. This practice diversifies operations by creating both annual and long-term income streams. It can also protect crops, improve water quality, improve nutrient utilization and enhance carbon sequestration.

Contact your local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) office to learn more about state and federal resources and programs to support agroforestry practices on your working lands.

Legally Speaking Can You Predict The Future?

Why a buy-sell agreement or partnership agreement is important to your business.

By Scott Berry — Berry Law Offices At the inception of a business, there is a sense of enthusiasm and optimism about the potential of the company. The partners’ aspirations for the newly created company are closely aligned as they embark on their journey together. Accordingly, because the partners are getting along so well when the company is newly established, it is important to prepare a partnership agreement or buy sell agreement during the honeymoon phase of the business. Over the years, as the business changes, disputes inevitably occur between partners over things like: the compensation of the partners, the direction of the company, continuing the business or the value of the company. Things such as divorce or death of a partner can cause major disruptions to a business as well. To avoid disruptions to the business and to avert substantial costs that are associated with such disruptions, it is important to have in place a buy-sell agreement between the partners and shareholders of the company.

Partner or Shareholder Buyout A well written buy-sell agreement will cover situations such as the death or divorce of a partner as well as a circumstance when a partner or shareholder leaves the business. A properly prepared buy sell agreement will describe the obligations of both the departing shareholders and the remaining shareholders. The buy-sell agreement will specify the terms of the buyout as well as how the buyout price is calculated and the buyout process. The terms of the buy-sell agreement must be structured in a cost-effective manner to allow the business to continue and to allow the leaving shareholders to be paid their agreed buyout amount, keeping in mind that the business must continue to grow.

Business Buyout In almost all instances, setting a specific buyout price three, five or 10 years in the future is impossible. A business is unable to accurately predict its future value. In addition, getting leaving shareholders and partners to agree on a price with those shareholders and partners remaining in the business is impractical. Accordingly, it is essential to create a formula or process for which a valuation of the business is to be determined. Although there are many ways to create this formula or process to determine the value of a business, the following are a few common methods: • Annual Fixed Price. The shareholders or partners of a business annually determine the price per share of the business.

• Book Value. The business partners set a price based on the net value of the business’s assets minus its liabilities as shown on its balance sheet.

• Capitalization of earnings. This valuation method measures a company’s value based on its past profits.

JAMES MAKER James “Jim” Maker of Mora died peacefully Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Grace Point Crossing in Cambridge. He was 80 years old.

Special thanks go to Clarence and Lou Maki for visiting and listening to m music with him.

He was born in Duluth. He liked to go ggarage sale-ing, collect cars, cook and play ccards. He retired in 2004; he then decided tto open his own restaurant in Mora. He oowned Mustangs Steakhouse from 2004 uuntil he sold it in the fall of 2007.

He had other adventures before he eended up battling colon cancer; was cancer ffree for nine years; and experienced heartaache in 2010.

He loved to help anyone who needed it.

He was preceded in death by his mother Maxine Maker, his uncle Garland Maker M aand aunt Charlotte Maker.

He is survived by his wife, a son, two ddaughters, one adopted daughter, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Memorials can be sent to Debra Maker, PO Box 234, Mora, Minnesota 55051.

A celebration of life will be planned.

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle

K

eeping vehicles looking pristine requires care and diligent cleaning. So many day-to-day activities and environmental materials have the potential to damage the finish on cars and trucks. While winter weather and chemicals used to keep roadways passable are often blamed for affecting the appearance of cars and trucks, winter is not the only time of year when substances can cause damage to vehicles.

Spring and summer are prime seasons for sap, birds and insects. These times of year tend to see an uptick in road work as well, and such projects can contribute to damage caused by loose asphalt, gravel and tar. Addressing problems resulting from tree sap, insect and bird droppings and tar may not be something to look forward to, but it is necessary to keep cars looking pristine.

Tree sap According to Cars.com, an automotive information resource and vehicle sales website, although tree sap won’t cause immediate damage to vehicle paint, it should not be ignored.

Over time, sap can become more difficult to remove, etch through the clear coat on the vehicle and cause discoloration.

When the temperature is hot, damage from sap can accelerate.

On windows and windshields, drivers may be able to gently remove dried sap with a razor blade. However, use cleaning products on more delicate paint. Automotive stores sell speciality sap and tar cleaners. Otherwise, you can try rubbing alcohol. It may take a few attempts to remove sap entirely.

Insects and bird droppings Splattered bugs and avian surprises dropped from above can be a messy, unsightly nuisance. Their acidic composition also may cause them to damage paint over time. Bugs and droppings can be sticky, so you will need to work with something that will remove the splatter without removing the paint in the process. A product like WD-40 may help. This oily product is normally used on rust and hinges. When applied with a cloth and allowed to penetrate the stain, it can loosen difficult-toremove sticky substances. Always test any product you use in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn’t damage or discolor your the paint.

Insects or droppings that are fresh may come off relatively easily with a good washing or hosing off of the car. Retailers also sell specialty insect sponges to remove bugs and other debris.

How to avoid hot weather automotive breakdowns When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle.

High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hot-weather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

Battery Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls.

It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.

Cooling system Cooling systems work hard to keep the flow of air to the engine and prevent it from overheating during warm seasons. Compromised cooling fans or lack of coolant can be troublesome.

To avoid overheating, check coolant levels before getting on the

road. In addition, have the cooling system checked by a trained mechanic prior to the summer driving season. It’s a small price to pay to avoid extensive engine damage from overheating.

Tires Hot weather causes the pressure inside of tires to rise. Overinflated tires can wear down prematurely or result in blowouts.

The Car Care Council recommends checking tire pressure routinely in the summer, when tires are cold. Follow the guidelines in the owner’s manual for recommended air pressure. Look for improper tread wear, weak spots or other tire damage that may end up causing flats.

Fluid levels Hot weather can put extra demand on all fluids and engine components. Check transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and engine oil levels. Top off or change when necessary.

Pack with breakdowns in mind Plan ahead for potential summer breakdowns by bringing along water, snacks, sunscreen, and an emergency medical kit.

Be sure mobile phones are fully charged and that the number of a tow service or roadside assistance crew is entered into your list of contacts in the event of an emergency.

With warm-weather road trips beckoning, it’s time to plan accordingly to prevent breakdowns that can derail fun.
