Horse & FarmLife Rainy weather could bring serious hoof issues Thrush is a common problem in horse’s hooves, especially when rainy weather persists. In the spring and fall, when the weather is damp, you might find that thrush can be more of a problem, although it can certainly appear at any time of year. Usually, it’s no big deal, but it can become painful and debilitating for your horse if left untreated. It’s important to catch it and clear it up early, before it causes serious damage.

You will quickly recognize thrush if you find a black, moist, foul smelling substance when you clean out the hooves. The thrush will likely be hiding in the deeper areas of the cleft. The smell of thrush is unmistakable. As you clean the hoof, the black substance will scrape out but leave dark staining affecting the clefts, sole and frog.

There are ways to help prevent thrush.

• Don’t neglect your horse’s hooves in the winter. If your horse’s hooves are left long, they can develop cracks and thrush can take hold.

A small amount of thrush is fairly harmless and easily treatable in the early stages. The visible signs are the black tarry, odorous substance in the hooves. Left untreated however, it can erode the hoof to the point where

ADVERTISER, MAY 21, 2017 - 19 MAY 20  ACTING PROGRAM FOR TEENS A Guthrie Theatre teaching artist will be at the Mora Public Library from 10:30 to noon teaching area teens the tricks of the trade in acting. No experience is necessary but preregistration is required. Grades 6 - 9 will make up one group, grades 9 - 12 will make up another. MAY 20  21 SPRING VOLUNTEER DAYS Audubon Center of the North Woods in Sandstone is setting aside a few weekends as Volunteer Work Weekends and is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of projects. The first of these is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for May 20 and 21.

There is no charge but preregistration is required to plan for meals and supplies (lunch is included) Ages 12 and up only is requested and children must be accompanied by an adult.

At the end of the day, volunteers may explore the center and hike, canoe or swim at no charge.

More information and registration is available online (audubon-center.org) or by caling 320-245-ACNW. Additional weekends include June 2-4, July 7-9 and Sept. 8-10 (includes two nights lodging and all meals - 7 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Sunday).

MAY 22 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY The next meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Crystal in Mora. those members planning on lunch should arrive by 12:30 p.m.

MAY 22 CONGRESS COMES TO YOU U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan (MN-08) announced that members of his staff will be in Mora at the Dala Apartments senior dining from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and at the Kanabec County Courthouse from 1 to 2 p.m. They will then travel to Braham City Hall where they will meet with the public from 3 to 4 p.m.

Nolan’s staff members will discuss matters of interest and importance to those in attendance.

MAY 23 HEART TO HEART SUPPORT GROUP The next meeting of the Heartto-Heart support group will be from 2 to 3 p.m. in Mora in meeting rooms 1 and 2 at the hospital.

MAY 24 MOVIE MATINEE Eastwood Life Enrichment Center in Mora will offer a movie matinee at 1 p.m. The movie will be “High Noon” starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly.

The movie is rated PG. Popcorn will be served and there is not charge to attend.

MAY 24 SENIOR DANCE The Braham Event Center will feature Michael Elsenpeter Band from 1 - 4 p.m. for the dancing pleasure of the public.

MAY 25 MUSIC WITH DOYLE PECK Eastwood Life Enrichment Center in Mora welcomes back Doyle Peck who will be sharing his music at 1:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and a freewill offering will be accepted. The public is invited to attend.

MAY 25 CHASING THE DRAGON “Chasing the Dragon - The Life of an Opiate Addict” will be shown at the Paradise Theatre in Mora at 6:30 p.m. Following the showing of the documentary (released by the FBI and the DEA), there will be a community discussion about the opioid epidemic.

Panel members will include Dr. Brent Thompson, pharmacy director at FirstLight, Brian Smith, Kanabec County Sheriff and Barbara McFadden, Kanabec County Attorney.

Younger students are welcome to attend at the discretion of their parent or guardian.

BRANDON R. H. HUNTINGTON Brandon Robert Henry Huntington died on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa. He was 31 years old.

He was born on Dec. 13, 1985, in Mora to Carrie Armstrong and Wayne R Richard Huntington. He graduated ffrom Van Buren High School.

Brandon was united in marriage to tthe love of his life, Kayla Clemenson oon Feb. 20, 2010, in Bonaparte, Iowa.

O On Oct. 19, 2011, they welcomed their sson, Malik Ivan, who was his pride and jo joy. He and his son spent many hours w wrestling and playing.

He was employed by Gemvision C Corporation. He was a man of many p projects and lots of tinkering. Some oof his projects include working on h his jeep, building an airplane and tthe countless hours he spent with his ffather-in-law, Kevin, building his wife’s d dream home. He also enjoyed spending time with his brothers, sister and many friends.

To Brandon- there were no strangers.

He is survived by wife, Kayla Huntington of Keosauqua; son, Malik Ivan Huntington of Keosauqua; brothers, Cody Corman of Keosauqua, Iowa, Zachary Corman of Des Moines, Iowa and Brock Corman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister, Miriah Huntington of Mora; stepsiblings, Jeremiah (Bethany) Smith and Jessica (Heath) Troupe; Sister and brother-in-law, Randi and JC Shriver and nephew, Max Shriver of Bonoparte, Iowa; parents, Carrie Armstrong-Vesik of San Antonio, Texas and Wayne (Gayle) Huntington of Mora; mother and father-in-law, Wanda and Kevin Clemenson of Keosauqua, Iowa; grandfather, Wayne (Peggy) Huntington with whom he had a very special relationship and countless friends and family who loved and adored him.

Brandon was able to give the gift of life through organ donation and his remains have been cremated.

A blessing was held on Thursday, May 11, at River Valley Lodge and Campground, 29080 Hawk Drive, Farmington, Iowa followed by a celebration of life.

Also, a valid driver’s license. A candidate may substitute experience for education and education for experience in order to meet the qualifications.

Starting Salary: $17.21/hr - $23.03/hr DOQ

OFFICE SUPPORT SPECIALIST - CHILD SUPPORT UNIT Essential Duties: This position assists the Child Support Unit with managing their caseloads.

Performs moderately difficult clerical assignments and public contact work requiring independent judgment. Enters data into computer system, setting up case files, backup receptionist, sorting and distributing mail, providing information about agency programs and community resources to the public. Assist clientele with accurate information in regards to policy, procedures and state statutes.

Provides technical support services to all HHS staff and cross training in other HHS areas is required.
