Below are last week’s most read stories on the Pine City Pioneer website at: www.pinecitymn.com 1. Veteran killed in I-35 crash in Pine County: A longtime member of the Minnesota Air National Guard, on his way to one of his last drill weekends before retirement, was killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 35 after another vehicle reportedly crossed the median near Hinckley and hit his vehicle head-on. 2. Funding needed for ‘last mile’ of Pine County broadband: Pine County is exploring other funding options for expanding broadband. As regulations over the use of American Rescue Plan Funding become available, the county board has plans to use some of that funding for expansion. 3.) Man injured in rollover crash: A Woodbury man was hospitalized after a May 15 single-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 at the Hinckley exit. He was wearing a seatbelt and his injuries were described as non-life threatening. He was transported to Essentia Health Sandstone for treatment. Are you a current subscriber? Below are last week’s most read stories on the Kanabec County Times website, www.MoraMinn.com. 1. Therapy team uses horses to heal: May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and two Mora women with long histories of caring for others are embarking on a new journey together to help others find healing. Jamie Bankers and her mother-in-law, Diane Bankers, have co-created their new business, Manes for Change LLC, to offer equine-assisted psychotherapy. 2. Planting native species offers many benefits: Why plant native species? Plants native to a region are, by nature, not invasive, and while you may see them spreading within your garden, they won’t become problematic for the surrounding environment. Planting native species will provide greater benefits for wildlife and native pollinators and won’t need as much fertilizer or water as they tend to have robust root systems. 3. 1 year later, Dala Horse takes off the mask: The City of Mora removed the face mask from the 22-foot tall Mora Dala Horse, coinciding with Governor Tim Walz’ end of the statewide mask requirement effective May 14. John and Myrtle Carlson Memorial Scholarship (4-year renewable): Peg Carlson, Tess Houglum, Marty Carlson.

Congratulations to the Mora High School Graduating Class of 2021! Through our donors’ generous support, 42 seniors received Mora Dollars for Scholars scholarships this year. Among these scholarships, two are 4-year renewable and six are 2-year renewable. Each scholarship dollar amount is $1,400. This year, through the generosity of our community members, we were able to award several new scholarships. The Mora Chapter of Dollars for Scholars has been awarding scholarships to Mora High School seniors since 1989. In the past 32 years, Mora Dollars for Scholars has awarded 1,129 scholarships totaling $1,410,850. The support and generosity of Mora citizens, alumni and businesses have allowed Mora Dollars for Scholars to give scholarships to help fund Mora High School students with the cost of higher education. Students who receive these scholarships are selected based on a combination of seven factors: their grade point average, ACT test results, work experience, community and school involvement, essays regarding goals and unusual circumstances and references. Thank you for your generous donations and continued support! Contributions may be made at any time and are tax-deductible.
