ACE Dance Team
iPads and Art Students in the Mora junior high art and high school photography classes piloted the use of iPads in art this past semester thanks to some very wonderful grant opportunities from Minnesota Vega Productions and the Mora Education Foundation. Vega Productions’ mission is to provide quality arts education for all students in Minnesota public schools by promoting the art and music programs. They fundraise by selling Beatles music CDs produced with Minnesota groups and school organizations.
The Fairview ACE dance team of Brian Doschadish, Darcy Halverson, Anna Patenaude, Judy Broekemeier and Kim Schulz gave a summary report of their two-year professional development program through the Perpich Center for Arts Education to the Mora School Board at their May meeting. The teachers’ focus was on integrating creative movement and dance into the curriculum and their results were noteworthy. They plan on continuing to generate an appreciation for a variety of dance forms by inviting professional dancers and dance groups into the schools as well in the future. Plans for hosting the Nay Ah Shing tribal dancers in September are in the works.
3-Year-Old Preschool Are you looking for a fun, safe and educational place for your three-year-old to work on social skills and early learning skills? Mora Community Preschool has just the place. We are offering a one-day-a-week preschool program for children who are 3 years old by Sept. 1,2 012. This class will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 12:002:30 and will cost $30.00 per month. For more information or to sign up please contact Carrie Sell today at the Early Childhood office at 679-6257 or visit the Mora Public School website for additional information.
Their funding provided for three iPads for the art students to use in visually researching subject matter for collages or studying artists online and they are used at stations in the art room to enhance students’ use of technology. The Mora Education Foundation was also interested in supporting the use of iPads in the classroom for independant study and group collaborations so they provided three additional iPads to allow for six art stations within the classroom. They are also wonderful for documenting events or allowing photography students to create compositions directly on the iPads using a variety of studio techniques. The art staff look forward to further explorations with apps that will excite and inspire the students.
Mora FFA The Mora FFA sent 14 members to the 2012 Minnesota State FFA Convention. Mora had three teams participating in Career Development Events at the state level. Those teams were the Dairy Judging, General Livestock Judging, and the Fish and Wildlife. The Dairy Judging team consisted of Jordan Koch, Jed Lilenthal, Amorette Johnson, and Matthew Johnstone. The team received a Silver placing, with Jordan Koch receiving a Gold placing individually. The General Livestock team consisted of Zach Heikes, Max Anderson, Ryan Gunderson, and Brooke Gardner. The team received a Silver placing , with Zach Heikes receiving a Gold placing individually. The Fish and Wildlife Team placed eighth in the state. The team consisted of Dan Porter, Jimmy Hansen, Nathan Anderson, and Matt Nelson. Dan, Jimmy, and Nathan had individual Gold placings. Nathan and Jimmy placed in the top 20 within the state, which is outstanding. Other delegates of the FFA chapter included Michael Pederson who competed in the Dairy Handler competition.

JERRY E. LARSON Jerry E. Larson, owner of Jerry’s Bait in Mora, died on Monday, June 11, 2012 in Mora. He was 98 years old. He was born on April 15, 1914 in St. Paul, the son of Mollie Wallen. He grew up in New Brighton where he attended Edison High. After high school, he attended Dunwoody Institute where he took up auto mechanics. He later operated a garage on Central Ave. in Minneapolis called Larson Motors. As a young man he also worked in Chicago. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was part of the field artillery in WWII. He spent considerable time in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart and left the service with the rank of sergeant. In 1947 he was united in marriage to Margaret Magda. They made a home together in Mora for over 50 years and raised three children, Jerry Jr., Patty and Don “Buzzy.” In 1946 he purchased a small gas station on the corner of present day Hwy. 65 and Maple Ave. in Mora and operated it under the name of Jerry’s Service. He serviced cars, sold gas and then started selling bait to fisherman. It was around this time that he met Bob LeFebvre and they worked together for the next 40 years, enjoying a lifelong friendship. A couple of years later, he built Jerry’s Bait, just south of the station and shortly after that, the Sportsmen’s Café was added. The corner became a wellknown stop, almost nationwide, for

Jerry’s Bait continues to operate today under the management of his son, Don “Buzzy” Larson and granddaughter, Becky Larson. He also enjoyed a good game of cribbage, cards or dice and his yearly excursion to Las Vegas with Don. He was a devoted husband and father. Throughout his life, he enjoyed his grandchildren and all the family gatherings around the kitchen table. He was preceded in death by wife, Margaret; son, Jerry Jr. and brother, Les. He is survived by son, Don “Buzzy” (Laura) Larson of Mora and their daughters, Rebecca, Jennifer and Katherine; daughter, Patty (Dick) Johnson of Mora and their children, Matthew, David and Melinda; along with several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
