Maintenance keeps horses healthy and happy Veterinary care, proper feeding, exercise and grooming keep horses healthy and happy.

Horses are strong animals that have been relied upon for centuries to fi ll various roles. Once a primary mode of transportation, horses also help farmers tend to their crops and entertain millions on the racetracks.

Horses are social animals that need attention and consistent care. Keeping a horse is a commitment, but can prove very rewarding. Horse’s require basic daily care that should be tailored to the season.

Shelter A horse habitat is an area where the animal can escape the elements. Barns, stalls or even just shade coverings, depending on the area and climate, can make great shelters for horses. The shelter should not be smaller than 12 square feet.

Fencing and gates should be secure.

Some horses are smart enough to get out of paddocks or stalls simply by opening the gate. Chains and locks can help prevent escape artists.

Food Horses are grazing animals and are accustomed to eating all day. If pastures are green and horses are getting enough grass, they may not need supplement hay. However, if the weather gets cold and grass is in short supply, horses will

need access to plenty of hay. Many horse owners supplement with salt or mineral licks. A veterinarian also can advise horse owners about the best types of feed for particular horses based on the animals’ age, activity level, gender and breed.

Feet and Teeth It is important to maintain a horse’s feet and teeth. An inability to grind food properly can prevent a horse from getting proper nutrition, which is essential to their health. This is especially true when the weather gets cold and the horse needs extra energy in colder weather.

“Initially it was a huge concern,” said Deanna Pomije, Kanabec Soil and Water Conservation District Manager on how the Minnesota Buffer Law would affect farmers and landowners.

The preliminary assessment of how far Kanabec County is in compliance with the law has gone well said Pomije.

She said that 73 percent of Kanabec County lands adjacent to public waters are in compliance while 74 percent of Minnesota counties are 60-100 percent compliant with the state’s bipartisan water quality buffer initiative. “We are lucky that a lot of our land adjacent to these waters already has grass and hay. However, landowners need to understand that if it is ever tilled that it will need a buffer.”

Jeff rey Steven Schermer of Isle died Sunday, June 10, 2018, peacefully at home with his family by his side. He was 60 years old.

He was at his happiest hunting and fishing with friends and family.

He enjoyed making his own custom lures and doing woodworking with his father.

He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and son. He will be missed dearly.

The family wishes to thank the many tireless caregivers during the last five weeks of his life (Joni and Linda).

He is survived by parents Peter and Ardys, sister Diana, and sons, Jason, Jerod (Brittany) and Brandon; grandchildren: Evan, Isabella, Danika, Gregory, Jaxon, Jeff rey and Zaeden.
