Two of our local schools – Fairview and the high school – were first constructed more than a half-century ago. These buildings have served us well during this time, and we have used regular maintenance, ongoing repairs and even occasional additions to keep these schools functioning well for our students and teachers. These buildings are far from Craig Schultz, perfect, and we know that. Their Superintendent imperfections have become part of their charm. They allow us to tell great stories once we graduate and can look back on our experiences as students. By waiting to make a decision about what to do with these buildings, we were able to build Trailview on a beautiful campus just a short distance from the high school. In recent years, education experts have found some of the charms of these older buildings are becoming barriers to student achievement. The size of a classroom does matter for teachers with more equipment, and frankly with more students in each class. Air quality and ventilation impacts a child’s ability to concentrate. Inefficient energy systems mean money is spent every year on fuel and repairs that could be used to buy new books or computers. And we all have read enough headlines to know the problems caused by inadequate safety and security measures strained by poorly-planned traffic flow around school property. Making our schools as safe as our homes isn’t as easy as it was 25 years ago. The Aug. 14 vote will provide the residents of the Mora school district with the opportunity to vote on the school board’s strategic facilities plan and their willingness to invest in safer and healthier schools. If area residents support the plan, we will create a single, modern PreK-12 education campus built around our newest and best facility, Trailview. Here are some of the issues the plan will address: Air quality and classroom comfort – The new campus will use – among other solutions – energy-recovery systems, energy-efficient lighting and natural daylight-

ing systems. Single-pane windows and inconsistent insulation that stress heating and cooling systems will be replaced. All ventilation systems on this new campus will meet current code. It’s difficult to expect our teachers and students to shout over fans and try to maintain attention when a classroom is overheated. That’s why the plan addresses air quality and classroom comfort while emphasizing energy efficiency. Parking and traffic safety – The layout of our older facilities doesn’t ensure students safety when they arrive at and leave school. The facilities plan creates a unified campus with improved parking options. Gone will be issues such as double-stacking of buses and unsafe dropoff options for students. Building security – Multiple entrances and poor layout cause supervision challenges. Monitoring issues have arisen from the open-campus lunches created to alleviate overcrowded cafeteria spaces. The new unified campus with enhanced common areas and improved security – via systems like card-only access at various doors – will benefit all and provide better peace of mind. Safety protection – The plan replaces outdated fire and alert systems. Electrical outlets will be upgraded to meet safety requirements and technology needs. And every science classroom will meet today’s code for building safety. Safe and healthy classrooms aren’t cheap, and we have been getting by for years on patching some of our problems rather than truly fixing them. Fortunately, the time is right to take advantage of lower construction costs, generational low interest rates, and a State of Minnesota program that covers more than half the costs of any building project over $30 million. These reasons are why the school board believes a single-campus plan makes sense for both students and for taxpayers, and has advanced this plan for consideration. Ultimately, the community will make the decision about whether to fund this plan. I remain committed to providing the community with the information they need to make their decision and talking to people about the facilities plan. Please call or e-mail me, or any member of the school board, if you have questions. I can be reached at 320-679-6210 or craig_schultz@mora.k12. mn.us.

Keep Your Horse Cool in Hot Weather by Katherine Blocksdorf • Provide ample fresh, clean water. Check daily that buckets or troughs are not contaminated with bird droppings, insect larvae, chaff, or algae growth. Try to keep the water cool. Horses may not want to drink warm water. Ponies and foals may have trouble reaching to the bottom of a shallowly filled trough. Make sure everyone in your paddocks can reach the water.

citronella essential oil on the people towels is an energizing touch.

• Clip horses with heavy coats. Be careful not to clip too close however, since exposed skin can sunburn.

• Take care of yourself. If you get overheated and tired, you may not be able to take care of your horse effectively. And you could miss warnings that your horse itself is showing signs of heat stress.

• Apply zinc oxide cream to horses with pink noses to prevent and treat sunburn.

• Heat stroke can happen to horses whether they are working hard, standing in stuffy stables, or traveling in trailers. Call a vet and take immediate action if your horse exhibits any of these symptoms:

• Sponge or hose down the large blood vessels along the inside of the legs, belly, and neck. Don’t spray the horse’s face or get water in its ears—sponge them down gently.

• Mid to late summer weather often means that grass growth slows down and pasture quality declines. Make sure your horse is getting enough fodder and consider supplementing with hay if necessary. Horses need energy to stay warm and cool. Adjust your feed mixture if your horse begins to lose condition in hot weather.

• If you must work your horses hard, try to schedule your session for early morning or late evening when it is cooler.

• During very hot weather, consider keeping - Elevated pulse in an inactive horse, pulse your horses stabled during the day, and let that does not drop after several minutes, or climbs once exercise has stopped. them out at night.

• After riding or driving in hot weather, cool your horse down slowly. Loosen girths or belly bands immediately after a workout. Offer sips of cool—not cold—water and walk the horse slowly. Muscles are more apt to stiffen if the horse is allowed to stand, and moving muscles dissipate heat better than stationary ones.

• If your barn becomes hot and stuff y, consider setting up a fan. Make sure the horse cannot reach the cord or fan itself, it can’t be tipped, and that it is plugged into a ground fault interrupt electrical receptacle if there is any chance of electrical wiring coming into contact with moisture, such as a spilled water bucket or a curious horse’s mouth.

• Consider using electrolytes if your horse is sweating hard, such as when the combined humidity and air temperature exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit or your horse will be working hard (a long trail ride or competition). Electrolytes replace salts lost in sweating. They are similar to human sport drinks. You can put electrolytes in the horse’s feed, or use a large-ended syringe to squirt into the mouth. Use electrolytes made for horses. Electrolytes made for other livestock may be unsuitable. • Make sure there is a place for your horse to

• If hot weather brings clouds of biting insects that keep your horse pacing and stomping, try using fly sprays, masks, and sheets. Water-based fly sprays may be less harsh on the coat hairs, as oil-based ones can cause bleaching. • Whether you are at home riding or competing, a bucket full of ice water and old towels can help refresh you and your horse. Place them over your horse’s neck and your own. A drop of lemon, mint, or

Test for this by observing your horse’s flanks. If they look caved in, he is probably dehydrated. Pick up a pinch of skin along your horse’s neck. If the skin snaps back quickly, the horse is sufficiently hydrated. If the pinched area collapses slowly, the horse is dehydrated. What to do until the vet arrives Use shade, cool water, breezes, or fans as best you can. Stand your horse in a pond or stream. BLIZZARD M Mora Dairy Queen Raises Funds ffor Local Children’s Hospital Employees from the Dairy Queen store located on Highway 65 in Mora raised $18,304 throughout 2011 for Gillette Children’s Hospital, which is the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) affiliated hopsital in St. Paul, MN. This amount was part of a total contribution of more than $64,600 donated from 2006-2011. Throughout the year, employees at the Dairy Queen location operated by Kelly and Joe Purdy and owned by Steve and Candy Oelkers, engaged in selling Miracle Balloons, Cash Collection Canisters, Miracle Treat Day Blizzards, Raffles with items donated from local businesses and a dunk tank. “We have been able to surpass our goals each year because of our employees’ hard work and enthusiasm, not to mention our customers’ generosity” says Kelly Purdy. “Every year, we have an intense and fun-filled competition among our employees to see if we can surpass last year’s total.” says Purdy. However, we never forget our purpose - helping the kids treated at Gillette Children’s Hospital. Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children by raising funds and awareness for more than 170 Children’s hospitals throughout North American. Each year, these nonprofit hospitals treat 17 million children afflicted by disease, injuries and birth defects of every kind. The Dairy Queen system has been a national sponsor of CMN since 1984, raising more than $90 million during that time.

If you own a business, we encourage you to purchase or pre-order Blizzard Treats or Blizzard coupons for your employees. If you are an employee, ask your boss if they will participate in donating on Miracle Treat Day. If a child in your family has ever been a patient at Children’s Hospitals we would love to hear from you! You can take part in the fundraising or be a part of our DQ Team that day. You can also participate by just being present and talking about what Children’s Hospitals have done for you and your family. Our store chose to give ALL PROCEEDS from Blizzard sales as well as balloons, canisters, raffles and other activities that happen that day. If you are willing to help with anything that day or with preparation - PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO CALL ME! If you have ideas for fundraising that day or know people or groups that would be willing to perform throughout the day - PLEASE CALL! We would love to do a raffle once again and have local businesses donate items. If we have enough great prizes then we may do a Children’s Miracle Silent Auction! (First one). If you are a business owner and would like to help us by donating or suggesting please contact Kelly at dqueen1@live.com or Cell (320) 280-0003 or work (320) 679-2055. Your generosity is always very much appreciated! Sincerely, Kelly & Joe Purdy Dairy Queen of Mora

MARJORIE B. QUIGGLE Marjorie Bernice (Nelson) Quiggle died on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Grace Pointe Crossing Gables West in Cambridge. She was 98 years old. She was born in Eagle Township, Kossuth County, Armstrong, Iowa on Feb. 1, 1914, the sixth of eight children, to Ira and Tillie (Johnson) Nelson. As a young child, her family moved to a farm in Imogene, Martin County, Minn. She attended country school there. Her family then moved to a farm near Granada when she was in the fifth grade. She was baptized on March 8, 1914 at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong, Iowa. She was confirmed on June 8, 1930 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Minn. She graduated from the Granada High School in 1933. On Nov. 4, 1933 she was united in marriage to John W. Quiggle in Fairbault. They began a life of dairy farming during the great depression, renting different farms. Their first son, Jack, was born in 1934. Dick was born in 1936 and Bruce was born in 1938. During the Armistice Day Storm of 1941, they lost their entire herd of sheep. They were buried under the storm and not found until the following spring. In 1946 the couple bought their first farm northwest of Braham in Kanabec County in the Seward community. They and their three boys moved all their cattle, pigs and chickens, farm machinery and belongings to begin a new life there. In 1956, twin daughters, Janice and Jeanne were born to their family. Being a farm girl all her life taught her to be a strong woman, being able to deal with adversity and have a good work ethic. She enjoyed the farm life and worked very hard. She took very good care

Timberworks Lumberjack Show

The show includes such events as axe throwing, underhand and chopping, log rolling, cross cut sawing, hot sawing and chainsaw carving. Old time lumberjacks in the logging camps of North America used these century old skills. To pass idle time, Lumberjacks

would challenge each other in a head-tohead competition where their skills were put to the test. Although technology and machinery have replaced manual labor, the skills are still used today by the athletes of the Timberworks Lumberjack Show.
