Improving Classroom Education Through Better Facilities Over the past few months, Mora Public Schools has been updating residents about recent work on our facilities plan. About two decades ago, residents voted to fund the construction of our newest school, Trailview. As we have been paying off the bonds for this school, the district has continued with regular maintenance and updates to Fairview and the high school. Now, as the bonds are close to being retired, the School board has turned their attention to needed improvements for the remaining schools.
• Classrooms sized and designed to meet today’s state standards
As the school board and district administration began to assess Fairview and the high school, our students and staff told us similar stories: Teaching methods and educational practices have evolved over time and educational experts have learned more about how young people learn. However, our facilities have not changed to allow our teachers to truly teach to our curriculum.
• Improving career and technical education
A doctor who understands the best way to treat cancer or diabetes cannot help the patient unless the right medicine and equipment are available. In the same way, teachers struggle to meet the needs of students when our schools don’t provide them with the classroom space and equipment they need. And when the room itself is too drafty or has poor air quality, the challenges are even greater.
Furthermore, the plan addresses the important area of healthy classrooms – which also benefits all students. Healthy air and classroom comfort are important for quality learning, as Environmental Protection Agency studies show student achievement increases in healthier classrooms.
Educational experts and our teachers carefully examined all three of our schools in the areas of mechanical equipment, efficiency, health, safety and educational adequacy. Not surprisingly, Trailview scored the best of the schools, particularly in the area of educational adequacy. In our high school, 16 measures were used to test educational adequacy. In only one area – the media center – did the high school earn a strong score. In areas such as science labs, classroom size, teacher planning, student breakout areas and technology, the high school received an inadequate score. Fairview received strong scores in only three of 15 educational adequacy areas tested. Of even greater concern at Fairview is the building itself, which does not meet current standards for air quality, electrical service or student safety. Many parts of the building itself are showing their age after more than 50 years of use. And the cost of making the repairs is almost the same as the cost of starting over with a brand new school. The school board has adopted a facilities plan that will be submitted to voters for approval on Aug. 14. The core of this plan is the improvement of classroom education for all students:
• Access to technology for students of all grades • Better science education areas and labs • Appropriate facilities for special education
• Providing on-campus access to good, nutritious food • Offering more and better spaces for students and teacher collaboration
Superintendent Craig Schultz Photo by Digital Hotshots
Finally, student safety and security is a primary goal of this plan. Improving parking and traffic safety removes dangers as students arrive at and leave school. Creating controlled entrances and improving the layout of the campus will greatly improve student supervision. And by upgrading water service, we can both eliminate any issues with lead in our drinking water and provide sprinkler coverage through our entire educational campus. As school board members looked at these challenges, they decided, continuing with the current strategy to repair and renovate the high school and Fairview could not accomplish our goals as efficiently or economically as creating a single education campus. While building a larger school on the Trailview site is the most expensive plan, state funding will reduce the tax impact by 25 percent, making the monthly cost slightly higher than the plans to repair and renovate. Ultimately, area residents will need to decide whether to fund this plan. I appreciate the opportunity to share this information about the long-range facilities plan with you. If you have questions or comments, I encourage you to contact me, or any member of the school board. We all believe it is important for everyone to have the best information before casting his or her ballot on Aug. 14.
