Late Summer Brings Mosquito Borne Horse Viruses When the dog days of summer set in there are a few health problems that become more prevalent in the horse world.

West Nile Virus hasn’t got the press as it did a few years ago, but it’s still a concern for horse owners. Horses like people, can get WNV, and it’s important to know what to look for.

EPM also tends to be more prevalent in the later weeks of the summer months. This is a particularly deadly disease and not something you want to take a ‘wait and see’ approach to.

EPM is something those of us to the north have not had to worry about, but with milder winters allowing opossums to survive, EPM has spread northward.

While the majority of horses will not get these diseases, and if they do won’t show symptoms of the diseases, it’s important to know what the symptoms are, because quick diagnosis is essential to a good outcome.

And if you recognize symptoms, it’s important to call a veterinarian immediately as home care is not likely to be the best way to cope.

WHY

BERNICE BUTENHOFF Bernice Butenhoff of Mora, died on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at St. Clare’s Living Community of Mora. She was 92 years old.

She was born on Aug. 29, 1920 to George and Fronie (Belanger) Bersaw at their home in Hillman Township rural Isle. As a child she attended the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wahkon where she received her First Communion and confirmation.

She attended country school in Hillman Township until the eighth grade.

As a young lady she was very much a “tomboy” working beside her dad in the woods cutting logs and firewood. She tended to the work horses as a part of her daily chores. She was united in marriage to DeLois Butenhoff on Aug. 6, 1938 and to their union four children were born, Henry “Hank,” Duane, Carol and Larry.

The family moved from rural Isle to Mora in 1953. She worked as a housekeeper at the Mora Motel from1964 to 1969. In 1969 she started work as a night janitor (housekeeper) at Amoco, now known as EPC in Mora, until she

She loved her children and grandchildren first and foremost.

She loved animals, birds and had many different dogs over the years.

She had a beautiful rose garden and loved all flowers. She just loved being outdoors and went for daily walks until she was well into her 80s.

She was a long-time member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Mora; and as a young member of the church, she volunteered many hours helping clean the church.

God and His son Jesus the Savior were an ever-present part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, DeLois Butenhoff; sonss Henry “Hank” Butenhoff and Duane Butenhoff; daughter, Carol (Butenhoff ) Johnson; granddaughters, Melissa (Johnson) Hallin and Brenda (Butenhoff) Graber; great-grandson, Bryce Butenhoff; brothers, Woodrow Bersaw and Vinton Bersaw and sister, Harriet (Roselia Bersaw) Edin.

She is survived by son, Larry (Cindy) Butenhoff of Mora; sonin-law, Gary Dale Johnson of Mora; daughter-in-law, Kathy Butenhoff of Mora; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

There was a memorial mass on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mora.
