Dan grew up in Mora, has worked for MN Equipment in Isanti for 22 years, has four daughters and is married to Tricia (Grimm from Moose Lake). They moved to Askov area three years ago.

Dan was recently diagnosed with a form of testicular cancer in his lymph nodes in the abdomen. He has been a hard worker and primary supporter for the family, however, since Aug. 15, when he became so ill with this and started Chemo he’s been unable to work. He does many long days of chemo and its side effects have made it difficult for him to go to work at this time.

He does not have short term disability and PTO has run out. He is expected to be out of work through November. We would love to help this young family out.

A Survivor’s Story…

Two years ago, then 63-year-old Judy Barnick of Mora and her three sisters were enjoying a day out in Stillwater. The four were shopping, making plans for a relative’s wedding and were soon on their way to watch a St. Paul Saints baseball game. In the car, they were giddy, laughing, and altogether acting like 16-year-olds.

That’s when Judy got the call.

4. Dimpling or puckering of the skin.

Warning Signs 1. Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area.

2. Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast.

3. Change in the size or shape of the breast.

After a routine mammogram, additional imaging and a biopsy, doctors had confirmed Judy had breast cancer.

7. Nipple discharge that starts suddenly 8. New pain in one spot that does not go away.

Throughout her treatment, there were many decisions to be made.

Then, after a year and a half of chemotherapy treatments, hair loss, a lumpectomy, then a double mastectomy, Judy was declared cancer free on March 2, 2016.

“I saw blessings throughout: people praying for me, people encouraging me and all kinds of things. I was totally blessed,” Judy said. “The only reason I was able to see the positive was because of all the people praying for me … I felt the prayers holding me up.”

Judy said she felt the hands of her sisters on her shoulders as they began to pray for her in the car.

Judy asked if they could pull over near a peaceful cornfield so she could pause and take a breath.

“I just got my deep breath and then I said, OK, now let’s go have some fun!”

Judy recalled the moment as being a mixture of bad and good. “It was the best thing in my life, believe it or not,” she said. “It was the worst time, but it was the best time.”

Judy had two pieces of advice to those who may find themselves battling breast cancer. The first, “Give it all to the Lord and allow Him to help you.” The second, “Talk to someone else who has gone through it.”

Throughout her battle, Judy was well supported by her family including her husband Loren, sons Chad and Aaron, and her three grandchildren; it was through her family and faith that she found blessings.

A RARE VOTE: YOU CAN REDUCE YOUR TAXES WHILE STILL GETTING A FIRST CLASS COMMUNITY WELLNESS CENTER On Nov. 7th, 2017 Mora Public Schools is holding a Bond Election to restructure funding for a portion of the FirstLight Community Wellness Center. This project is a collaboration between Mora Public Schools and the FirstLight Health System.

If this referendum passes, a ‘yes’ vote, homeowners, businesses and agricultural property owners will see a significantly smaller tax increase. A ‘Yes’ vote results in more state aid.

BACKGROUND The Mora School District entered into an agreement with the FirstLight Health System to build a wellness center on the Trailview Campus. FirstLight committed $5 million toward the project, while $2.26 million was available from bonds previously approved by voters.

With approval from the Minnesota Department of Education, the school board voted to use a lease levy to finance the remaining $3.4 million, a method of funding additional educational space for an existing building.

WHY DO WE NEED TO VOTE? The lease levy is not a voter-approved levy - the school board and the state approve it. However, general obligation (G.O .) bonds require voter approval. In our situation, the tax impact for local property owners drops if G.O. bonds are used. A ‘Yes’ vote brings state aid.

WHY IS THE REFERENDUM LEVY THAT MUCH CHEAPER? • Lease levies typically have a higher interest rate than general obligation bonds.

• G.O. bonds qualify for state debt aid; lease levies do not.

• The new state agricultural tax credit applies to G.O. bonds, but not for a lease levy.

HOW MUCH WILL I SAVE? An average homeowner will save 50% per year. For the average business, the savings are approximately 50% per year. An owner of farmland, regardless of price per acre, will see more than a 60% reduction in tax impact for a voter approved bond than a board approved lease levy.

ONE MORE TIME - THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS MADE A DECISION BUT WE ARE STILL HOLDING AN ELECTION? The school board approved a lease levy to keep the project moving ahead, including the FirstLight commitment. Approving the referendum means we can reduce the local tax burden by taking advantage of state support for building improvements.

If the referendum fails, local property tax collections for this project will be significantly higher.

Local voters will make this decision for the school district.

You can go to the school district website to calculate your actual taxes. If you are not available to vote on Nov. 7th, you can vote early in the District Office.
