The value of a CD is guaranteed up to $100,000 per depositor by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), an agency of the federal government. On January 1, 2014, the standard insurance amount returned to $100,000 per depositor for all account categories except certain retirement accounts, which will remain at $250,000 per investor. OCTOBER 2014 www.mora.k12.mn.us Mora School Staff Recognized
Trailview 5th Graders Practice Autoharps
The Trailview fifth-grade students are busy practicing the string instrument called the Autoharp. This lesson is part of the music standards that focus on playing classroom instruments and accompaniments. Is also introduces the students to string instruments and the science of sound. Their assessment will include performing a song they select for their homeroom class.
Science Specialist at Trailview
With the addition of a science specialist, students at Trailview will be receiving an extra hour per week of science time. Mora Schools received a grant from the MEF to purchase a LEGO Engineering Software Kit. With the software, students are able to program robotic Lego sets. Trailview is proud of the additional time and the science room. We will get deeper into our science standards and have a better room to conduct science experiments.
Congratulations Students!
Congratulations to Johanna, Riley and Abby for winning last year’s sixth-grade writing contest. The girls read their winning essays at the Kanabec County Fair in July. Keep it up, girls!
Eighth-grade art students visit with Oak Gallery store owner Bob Oehrlein as they learn some tips about matting and framing their finished artwork. Students also explored Oak Gallery in search of interesting landscapes to photograph on their iPads, utilizing the latest technology as they study a variety of landscapes in class before painting one of their own!
An event honoring Central Minnesota’s educational support staff was held Sept. 24 at the River’s Edge Convention Center, St. Cloud. In its fourth year, 105 people were honored from 28 school districts. The event honors those who work as bus drivers, custodians, cooks, paraprofessionals and other staff who help keep schools running smoothly. Mora honored Billy Thomas, Joan Beckrich, Judy Alcock, and Sue Vander Heyden.
First-graders review their five senses in art class as they learn about how artists use TEXTURE in their drawing. Shown here are students in Mrs. Gmahl’s first grade feeling the texture in the center of a large sunflower.
Congratulations to this year’s LEEA award winners for Mora Schools teaching staff. LEEA stands for “Leaders in Educational Excellence Award.” Lori Braiedy, Jeff Tvedt, Karen Felger, and Jackie Stevens will be recognized at River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Great work staff.
On Sept. 5, all elementary students on the same school bus, along with their bus driver, met together at Fairview. Students participated in “Get To Know You” activities, learned the rules of the school bus, and discussed what behaviors they would like to see on their school bus and which behaviors should be kept off the bus. By seeing bus drivers, teachers and other school staff members working together, students will know that adults care about what happens on the school bus. It is our hope that this program will cut down on student behavior problems on our school buses to make riding the bus a more enjoyable experience for all students.
Congratulations to Kevin Nolt Congratulations to Kevin Nolt, Mora High School business teacher, for being named the 2014 Minnesota Business Educators, Inc. (MBEI) Teacher of the Year for Outstanding Contributions to Business Education by an Emerging Professional. The Emerging Professional award is presented to a teacher with experience of five years or fewer. Mr. Nolt was nominated for the award by an MBEI member and then completed a lengthy application process. Mr. Nolt began teaching at Mora High School during the 2013-2014 school year. This year, he introduced two new business education classes to students: personal finance and sports and entertainment marketing. In addition, he teaches computer applications and accounting. Mr. Nolt was also selected as the MBEI legislative chair this past year. Beyond his contributions to business education, Mr. Nolt coaches football and hockey, is involved with summer community education programs, volunteers on several school committees, and is beginning his master’s in education. Thank
you,
Mr.
Nolt,

WE NEED A REAL CHANGE!
ELECT KEN
ROLLINS SHERIFF OF KANABEC COUNTY
NEW LEADERSHIP • NEW DIRECTION As I said in last week’s ad, I intend to run an ad each week in which I discuss some of the many very serious issues that currently exist in the Kanabec County Sheriff ’s Department as it is administered by Sheriff Steve Schulz and Chief Deputy Brian Smith. As I discuss the many issues, I urge the reader to not fall prey to suggestion that candidate Smith is not responsible for the issues that many residents are well aware of. In Smith’s August 7, 2014 responses to the Kanabec County Times questions for their voter guide Smith clearly states that among his other duties he is completely responsible to “run the day-to-day operations of the Kanabec County Sheriff ’s Department.” ISSUE: The Times has recently published articles about the fact that Kanabec County has concerns about the number of staff leaving the employ of the Sheriff ’s Department. County officials and Smith blame higher pay by other departments. Smith specifically in his voter guide response stated that exit interviews have resulted in “every deputy saying that…the difference in pay has grown too large for them to pass up.” I must respond to that claim with a couple of statements. Cops are in the business of exchanging information. In other words, we talk! I have spoken to numerous departed employees of the Sheriff ’s Department as well as some who are looking for other employment. Other area cops also are aware of the reasons employees are leaving the Sheriff ’s Department. Each employee I have spoken to is emphatic that the conditions within the Sheriff ’s Department are the reason they looked for work. Most of them of course felt that better pay was a highly desirable benefit to pursue if they were going to separate from the Kanabec County Sheriff ’s Department. Other area law enforcement personnel state that they hear the same comments from Sheriff ’s Department staff! However, let me be very clear that I do not pretend that pay equity with other departments is not a very real concern for Kanabec County any more than I pretend that the current Schulz/Smith administration is not also a very real concern. The issues I will be addressing in coming ads are largely the cause of the problems leading to employee attrition. By properly addressing the many existing issues and creating a great department in which good employees can properly function and take pride in being an essential part of, the attrition problem will be substantially reduced. This will result in the negative and very expensive problem of constantly needing to replace so many employees having far less impact on the county and the taxpayer. We need real change in the Kanabec County Sheriff ’s Department! Real changes will only occur if a real change is made in selecting the new Sheriff!
I need your support now and on election day - November 4th. Thank you and please look for my AD in next week’s edition. — Prepared and paid for by Ken Rollins, Mora, MN 55051 on his own behalf –
