The 2nd largest group of people in the Mora School District is millennials. (Age 18-39) The birth rate is 1.76 and falling. Reason: college debt; careers, economic uncertainty, high rent, having to live in parent’s basement. Very few kids here. Just empty classrooms. Just like Ogilvie. FOR
October 6-12 is National Public Power Week,
when public utilities across the nation spotlight the benefits of public power and what public power means to their communities. Mora Municipal Utilities is proud to be public power — locally owned and operated. The citizens of Mora voted to establish a municipal electric utility in 1933 in order to provide cheap and reliable power to the community. Our electric utility has a board of three commissioners appointed by the city council that gives local citizens a voice in governing their utility. In celebration for Public Power Week, we will have a coloring contest for children ages 12 and under. For contestant rules, please visit our website ci.mora.mn.us or our Facebook page. Also, we invite Mora Municipal Utilities customers to please join us on: Monday, October 7th through Friday, October 11th as we celebrate Public Power Week by having coffee & cookies at the utility office, as well as receiving a free LED light bulb (1 bulb per MMU customer), and signing up for a chance to win a prize. We hope you can join us!!

Self check catches cancer mammograms didn’t BY KIRSTEN FAURIE EDITOR@MORAMINN.COM
At first Tina Linnelle’s husband thought it was funny when she asked him to feel her boobs. He was more than obliged to do so. The joke quickly passed when they both said they felt the same thing: a lump. It was a small lump, about the size of an M&M, which Tina first discovered during a self breast exam while she was in the shower. Tina immediately scheduled a mammogram. Despite being able to feel the lump, the mammogram didn’t reveal cancer. Doctors ordered a biopsy. A week later, on July 8, 2015 (which happened to be her birthday) Tina heard the news: the biopsy confirmed that the lump was indeed stage one breast cancer. The mammogram result was a false negative. According to the American Cancer Society’s website, screening mammograms do not find about one in five breast cancers which can give women a false sense of security, thinking that they don’t have breast cancer when they actually do. Tina was overwhelmed. “That was the start of the roller coaster ride,” she said. After the diagnosis, Tina said she felt depressed and lost. “When you break your leg, you can say ‘I caused this to happen. I did this.’ When you have breast cancer or something it felt like my body was turning against me. It’s freaking scary and all you can do is trust the doctors.” Tina didn’t feel like a cancer warrior.
“Everybody is saying, ‘fight the fight and be strong’ but you want to punch them because you are so sick of hearing it ... It’s such a clichè. I’m not strong. I’m scared to death and I’m relying on everybody and for everybody else to say it’s going to be OK.” With the support of her coworkers, neighbors and family, Tina listened her doctors as she moved forward. Treatment included surgical removal of the lump and some lymph nodes at the Piper Breast Center in Minneapolis , radiation treatments in Wyoming, medications and physical therapy at the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Cambridge. The physical therapy was to treat a side effect of the lymph node removal called axillary web syndrome, also known as cording. She worked at her business in Pine City, Pine Comb Hair Salon. At the time, she didn’t realize how much her illness was also affecting her co-workers and family. Her friends and neighbors came together, bringing meals and donating money to help her drive the many trips for treatment. “It was humbling, all the letters I got in the mail from clients and neighbors,” Tina said. Friends decorated a Pine County Fair demolition derby car and made T-shirts in her honor with the words “feel your boobies.” At the same time she was battling her own cancer, her son was playing hockey. Three other hockey moms were fighting cancer at the same time. The hockey team organized “Pink Out the Rink” as a way to raise money and breast cancer awareness.
Tina was declared cancer free on May 14, 2016. Her advice for other women: Don’t rely on mammograms and get in the habit of performing self breast exams. She encouraged neighbors to keep helping each other, because she deeply appreciated all the assistance and encouragement she received.

SNG Services Gunsmithing & Tool Sharpening
SNG Services
SNG Services is a gunsmith service, licensed firearms dealer, and full-service tool sharpening shop located just south of Mora, Minnesota. Owned and operated by Kanabec County resident Shawn Paul, SNG Services is a local company with a nationwide footprint.
• Repair and customization of firearms • Sale of new and used firearms • Consignment sales
One of a few full-time gunsmiths in Minnesota, Paul has worked in gunsmithing since the 1980s. He likens the workings of a firearm to those of a vehicle. You bring your car to a professional mechanic when the transmission needs to be rebuilt, he says; and when a firearm needs service or repair, you should seek out the same level of care and expertise. As an experienced firearms mechanic with more than 30 years’ experience, Paul provides a level of excellence that can’t be found many other places.
• Insurance appraisals • Sporting goods • Ammo sales • Hunting equipment and accessories
Paul has a nationwide reputation, and is often consulted by firearms professionals across the country to fix and solve problems. He raised his family in the Mora area, however, and is committed to serving the community long-term. He treats customers as friends, and shows the same care for their firearms that he does for his own. Paul values his reputation and guarantees his work, believing that “if it can’t be done right it shouldn’t be done at all.”
• Large in-shop inventory • Firearms transfers
SNG Services also provides tool-sharpening services. From drill bits to lawnmower blades to scissors and knives, Paul can hone just about anything with a blade. “I can sharpen everything but your wit!” he laughs. OCT. 7 AUTHOR VISIT AT PINE CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY The community is invited to a special author visit featuring Lucie Amundsen, an award-winner for her book, “Locally Laid,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at the Pine City Public Library. Amundsen is a writer, marketer, community volunteer, and reluctant farmer who co-owns Locally Laid Egg Company, a Minnesota farm that aims to change the way eggs are produced in America. Her book, Locally Laid, a 2016 Midwest Booksellers Choice Award winner, is a humorous telling of how a Midwestern family with no agriculture experience went from a few backyard chickens to a plucky, industry-changing egg farm. All ages are welcome and registration is not necessary. Call 320-629-6403 with questions. OCT 7 & 8 55+ DRIVER DISCOUNT PROGRAM From 12-4 p.m. on both days at Zion Lutheran Church, 245 Central Ave., Milaca. The class will take place in the fellowship hall and will save you up to 10 percent on your auto insurance. For more information or to register, visit our website at www.mnsafetycenter.org or call 1-888-234-1294. Time permitting; there may be an opportunity that evening for two individuals to meet with the attorney (after the presentation) for an individual consultation. Consultations will be on a first come, first serve basis. Please call 763-689-3532 if you have questions. OCT. 8 ‘EVERY VOICE’ LAUNCH PARTY Join Family Pathways at the Three Twenty Brewery, 35 5th St. SE, Pine City, to celebrate the launch of their Strategic Plan and Vision for equity, good health and vitality across the region on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 5-6 p.m. Light snacks provided, beverages available for purchase at the venue.
