ARRIVING AT BRAHAM: Vietnam Veterans Memorial arriving at Freedom Park in Braham, along Hwy. 107.

A dedication Service is planned for Veterans Day, November 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 684 and Braham Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chapter 1731 together are planning the upcoming lasting legacy dedication of this memorial.

You are invited to be a part of this memorial to be placed in the south part of Braham Freedom Park. If you are a veteran, please be honored to wear your military uniform at this memorial dedication. This memorial is dedicated to the Vietnam Veterans, and we especially remember the six men that graduated from Braham High School that gave their lives for our freedom. However, any veteran or a family member is welcome to purchase a paver block with the veteran's name, date of service and rank. Please feel welcome to be a part of this memorial, donations are welcome. Cost of the pavers is $200 with the engraving (name, date of service, rank, (Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, Prisoner of War all are at no additional charge) included on the paver. HONORING OUR FLAG on Veterans Day and every day Veteran's Day is a time to honor those men and women who have served and fought for our Country in the armed forces. Our flag is a symbol of the very core values these people in the military strived to protect: freedom and democracy. Our veterans and our flag deserve our respect.

A little background and history of our flag: The American Flag was “born" on June 14, 1777. The 13 stripes of red and white represent the 13 original colonies and the blue field originally had 13 stars for each colony, but have now grown to 50. The colors symbolize the patriotic ideals and spiritual qualities of our peoples as were laid out in our Constitution. The red stripes represent valor and strength and the white stripes represent purity and innocence.

The blue field represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. The flag is a symbol of our unity, our common cause and who we are. As Ruth Apperson Rous presented in her poem "I am the Flag:" the flag is a living symbol of my nation's law: the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights." And in a nation of laws the flag has its own code of etiquette on how the flag is to be displayed and used: 1. The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset. It can be flown at night if proper illumination is provided. The flag should not be flown in inclement weather.

2. When the flag is carried in a procession with another flag or flags, it should be either on the marching right or before any other flags if there is a line of other flags.

3. Proper respect should be shown when the flag is being hoisted, lowered or passing in a parade. All should stand as the flag passes. Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand with their right hand over the heart and if applicable remove their hat.

4. Respect for the flag is shown by never displaying the flag with the blue field down; the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise; the flag should always be carried aloft and free, never flat or horizontally.

5. The code suggests that when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning." It also suggests this be done discreetly.

If you have a tattered flag you can call your local American Legion unit to take care of this duty.

It has been said the flag represents our past and our future. It represents our history and beliefs.

HONOR WHAT VETERANS FOUGHT FOR WITH PROPER FLAG ETIQUETTE OGILVIE & MORA AMERICAN LEGION POSTS CONTRIBUTED Veterans Day is a time to honor those men and women who have served and fought for our country in the armed forces. The American flag is a symbol of what these people in the military strived to protect: freedom and democracy.

The American Flag was “born” on June 14, 1777. The 13 stripes of red and white represent the 13 original colonies and the blue field originally had 13 stars for each colony, but have now grown to 50.

The red stripes represent valor and strength and the white stripes represent purity and innocence.

The blue field represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. The flag is a symbol of our unity, our common cause and who we are.

in her poem “I am the Flag:” The flag is a “living symbol of my nation’s law: the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.”

FLAG ETIQUETTE In a nation of laws the flag has its own code of etiquette on how the flag is to be displayed and used.

The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset. It can be flown at night if proper illumination is provided. The flag should not be flown in inclement weather.

When the flag is carried in a procession with another flag or flags, it should be either on the marching right or before any other flags if there is a line of other flags.

Proper respect should be shown when the flag is being hoisted, lowered or passing in a parade.

All should stand as the flag passes.

Members of the armed forces and

veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand with their right hand over the heart and if applicable remove their hat.

Respect for the flag is shown by never displaying the flag with the blue field down; the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise; the flag should always be carried aloft and free, never flat or horizontally.

The code suggests that “when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning.” It also suggests this be done discreetly. If you have a tattered flag you can call your local American Legion unit to take care of this duty.

Arlen Edward Soderstrom, of Mora, died on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020, at St. Clare Living Community in Mora. He was 91 years old.

He was born on Aug. 9, 1929 to Edward and Mildred (Ostrom) E SSoderstrom. He was the oldest of five children. As a child, he walked just a half mile across the swamp to ju tthe Quamba school. He was a hard worker and enjoyed working his w ggrandfather’s farm with his uncle, Fritz. After graduating from Mora F H High School in 1947, he went right to work learning to be a carpenter with w his uncle, Elwood. He most enjoyed h making cabinets, but would often step m iin to help create beautiful fieldstone fireplaces with his dad and brothers.

He met Gloria Renstrom in high school and following graduation he won her heart, though he followed his future mother-in-law’s request and waited until she finished nurses training to marry her. On Dec. 16, 1950 they were united in marriage. The couple welcomed their only child, a daughter, Lynell, in 1951. He was completely smitten. He worked hard but always had time for his “Punky.”

His faith came first. He was raised in the Swedish Baptist Church in Quamba when they only spoke Swedish. He asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior at a young age and spent his entire life growing in that faith and serving in the church. He taught children Sunday school for 52 years and was a beloved teacher, mentor and friend to many as he genuinely shared his faith. He was known for his big smile and his stories. His kindness and silliness came out when he brought out his little finger-friend, “Oscar,” to visit. Children of all ages would giggle and enjoy the fun that he gifted to them.

He was an avid agate collector. On a Sunday afternoon you could find Arlen, Glory, Lynell, Bruce and Brian in a gravel pit or on a newly graveled road with their agate buckets. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing and deer hunting, but the relationships with people is what he enjoyed most. He was a typical Swede in that he loved Lutefisk (especially when his wife made the delicious white sauce). She was his “right-hand gal” when they served Swedish pancakes at many large group gatherings. In his later years, he and his wife enjoyed bird watching and taking long car rides to look for deer and enjoy God’s creation. You’d often find them enjoying breakfast at Freddie’s and driving to Blaine to enjoy their friend, Carol’s, amazing cooking at the restaurant named after her.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Russ and Ron; brother-in-law, Lyle Berghuis; and sister-in-law, Ginny Soderstrom.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of nearly 70 years, Gloria; daughter, Lynell (Jerry) Lewey of Cambridge; only grandson, Jake Lewey; sister, Betty Berghuis of Milaca; brother, Merlin “Sod” (Ione) Soderstrom of Milaca; sister-in-law, Judy Soderstrom of Cambridge; special nephews, Bruce and Brian Anderson; many more nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends of all ages.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, at Quamba Baptist Church with a visitation one hour prior to the service. A special thank you to Pastor Ivan Fisk for his thoughtful friendship and to Arlen’s neighbors, Mark and Pauline Peterson and Ernie and Dolores Blaisdell for their extra special kindness and care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Quamba Baptist Church Children’s Sunday School.
