Smoking has been linked to many different illnesses. It’s widely known that cigarette smoke can impact respiratory and cardiovascular health, but there may be a new reason to quit, particularly for those plagued by chronic inflammation. Researchers at Sweden’s Umea University, in collaboration with researchers in the United States, found that nicotine strongly activates immune cells to release DNA fibers decorated with pro-inflammatory molecules called neutrophil extracellular traps, or NETs. Continuous exposure to NETs can harm tissues and may explain why smokers are vulnerable to inflammatory diseases. NETs have been implicated in several inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, cancer and small vessel vasculitis. This evidence presents yet another reason why people should quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke, or never begin smoking at all.

Thank you for your support of Mora Dollars for Scholars! Congratulations to the Mora High School Graduating Class of 2019! The Mora Dollars for Scholars Awards Night was held on May 15, 2019. Through our donors’ generous support, 45 seniors received Mora Dollars for Scholars scholarships this year. Among these scholarships, three are 4-year renewable. Each scholarship dollar amount is $1,400. This year, through the generosity of several community members, we were able to award 10 new scholarships. The Mora Chapter of Dollars for Scholars has been awarding scholarships to Mora High School seniors since 1989. In the past 30 years, Mora Dollars for Scholars has awarded 1048 scholarships totaling $1,272,250. The support and generosity of Mora citizens, alumni and businesses have allowed Mora Dollars for Scholars to give scholarships to help fund Mora High School students with the cost of higher education. Students who receive these scholarships are selected based on a combination of seven factors: their grade point average, ACT test results, work experience, community and school involvement, essays regarding goals and unusual circumstances, and references. Thank you for your generous donations and continued support! Contributions may be made at any time and are tax-deductible. Donations may be mailed to Mora Dollars for Scholars, Box 422, Mora MN 55051 or completed online at: www.mora.dollarsforscholars.org
