Mora Municipal Utilities for contributing $30,000 in funds to the Kanabec County EDA from 2017 through 2019 to promote the development of Mora Industrial Park and to entice private investment and jobs to your service area. Your funds were used to prepare Mora Industrial Park for development through such things as survey and title work, environmental assessments and geotechnical soil testing. Your funds were also used to promote the industrial park on a billboard on Hwy 65 for one year and to update the industrial park’s permanent entrance sign. Finally, your funds were used to support staff time spent to recruit Kwik Trip to the community. Your contributions will leave a positive and lasting impact on the community. Sincerely, Kanabec County EDA Members Gene Anderson, Ivan Black, Kathi Ellis, Lisa Holcomb, Doyle Jelsing, Dan Johnson, Jack L’Heureux, Jerry Tvedt and Sara Treiber

125 owners affected by buffer law BY TERRY SALMELA NEWS@MORAMINN.COM
“Initially it was a huge concern,” said Deanna Pomije, Kanabec Soil and Water Conservation District Manager on how the Minnesota Buffer Law would affect farmers and landowners. The preliminary assessment of how far Kanabec County is in compliance with the law has gone well said Pomije.
She said that 73 percent of Kanabec County lands adjacent to public waters are in compliance while 74 percent of Minnesota counties are 60-100 percent compliant with the state’s bipartisan water quality buffer initiative. “We are lucky that a lot of our land adjacent to these waters already has grass and hay. However, landowners need to understand that if it is ever tilled that it will need a buffer.”
The Minnesota Buffer Law which was passed in 2015 and amended in 2016 requires landowners with land adjacent to public waters or lakes to have a 50-foot vegetative buffer and those adjacent to a public drainage ditch to have a 16 1/2 foot vegetative buffer for better water quality. Pomije said that 125 letters were sent to Kanabec County

Improvement Contact these pros for all of your Fall Home Improvement needs! Roof Maintenance Roofs get more abuse from the elements than any other part of the building, and preventive maintenance is a key element to saving money on your roof by providing a longer service life. It’s important to inspect our roofs surface after any severe storm or day of excessive winds. At least 95% of leaks occur at points of flashing. • Clean all debris from the surface of the roof. This includes debris that has gathered behind HVAC units, pipes and pitch pans, and any other roof penetrations. Debris has a tendency to hold water, and water will expedite roof deterioration, especially if your roof is asphalt based.
• If your roof has a gravel surfacing and there are some bare spots present, clean the bare spot thoroughly using a broom and a wire brush if necessary. Be sure to remove all loose dirt generated from brushing and sweeping. Blow on the area if need be. Spread a thin layer of asphalt roof cement over the bare area about 1/8 inch thick. Gather some lose gravel from other areas of the roof and embed it in the roof cement. • Check all flashings. Make sure that the flashings are not deteriorated and there are no holes in them. Routine inspections need to be performed on your roofing and your flashings. Lots of homeowners fail

to properly check their flashing. But flashing that is poorly attached due to wind and poor weather conditions can cause open seams and laps. This can lead to blow-offs of roofing material, leaks and reduced puncture resistance. Flashing protects the most vulnerable part of the roof; it protects and provides a water-proof barrier between the actual roof ’s material and the structure beneath. If you find your flashing is in need of repair, it’s best to do it immediately; if you waitit can create more problems. • Keep all gutters free of debris. Make sure that the downspouts are draining properly by water testing them. Trim back any overhanging tree branches.
• Check all caulking and sealants on flashings and copings. Scrape and remove any caulking that is weather cracked and damaged. Clean the area thoroughly. Use a wire brush if necessary. Reapply a polyurethane caulking.
DID YOU KNOW? Outdoor remodels and landscaping projects can add valuable curb appeal to homes. The National Association of Realtors and the National Association of Landscape Professionals agree that certain projects offer significant returns when selling a home. The NAR says these are the 10 most appealing outdoor features to buyers.

Improvement Things to consider before warming up next to your first fire this winter There are many options for you to choose from, but the right options can often depend where you want to put your fireplace. Creating a plan and researching your options is the smart way to start. ELECTRIC FIREPLACES • Do not require venting as there is no source of combustion and no heat loss through a chimney. • Many decorative styles to fit your needs and room. • Great for supplemental heat. LP & NATURAL GAS • Great source of supplemental heat. • Provide the look of a wood burning fireplace or wood stove without the mess or work. • Can be either vented or vent free. WOOD FIREPLACES • Helps to lower your heating bills. • The ambiance, romance and scent of a wood fire are other great reasons to install one in your home. VENT FREE FIREPLACES • Typically cost less than vented fireplaces to operate and install. Have a 99.7% efficiency rating, and utilize the air already in the home. The burner in the gas heater is designed to burn and produce virtually no
carbon monoxide or other hazardous fumes that need to be vented outside the home. • Vent free products are not recommended for use in elevations over 5,000 feet. • There are more limitations on vent free fireplaces due to local codes. DIRECT VENT FIREPLACES • Direct vent fireplaces are gas operated and heat rated. • Vented needs a specific vent system to bring in and introduce fresh outside air and vent the exhaust from the unit outside the home. • High efficiency and convenient installation are two of its features. • Can be used practically anywhere • Low cost installation due to compact and easy install • Due to the sealed combustion technology, no full chimney is needed • Glass panel provides extra safety assurance • Always check with the local code authority to get a list of acceptable types of units that may be installed in your homes or garages
OUTDOOR FIREPLACES There are many varieties to choose from including: • No cut block projects • Portable fireplaces • Fire rings
More than just a beautiful front door shakes a bit? • Has the lock become unreliable and difficult to latch at times, or doesn’t line up right? • Are you noticing water leaking in the bottom, does the floor get wet when it rains or is there moisture during colder, winter months? • Is rust or mold evident, building up on some parts of the door?
Have you been meaning to replace your old front door but keep finding ways to put it off ? Now may be the time to do it. The front door is an important part of any home for many reasons. Consider the following basic factors when purchasing a front door, regardless if you prefer a fiberglass, steel or wood front door. SIGNS THAT IT MIGHT BE TIME • Is it difficult to close all the way, maybe it sticks or

HOME SECURITY Most people seem to enter their home through the garage these days or a back door. But, that doesn’t minimize the importance of having a well-functioning front door. Remember, the most common way that intruders might break in to your house is through the front door. A new, secure front door might be the first step towards securing your home, especially with the variety of locking systems available these days. ENERGY EFFICIENCY Not only will your home be safer with a new front
door, it will be more energy efficient. An older door is more likely to have holes or leaks in it, allowing outside air to get inside and inside air to escape as well. No matter the weather, you will be leaking cold or hot air. It’s important to assess the quality of your front door and to consider adding weather stripping or purchasing a new, energy efficient door. CURB APPEAL The first impression of a house can be dramatically improved by the front door. Enhance the exterior of your home and improve curb appeal and resale value, especially beneficial if you are planning a move in the future. Since the front door is a focal point for most homes, a quality front door will set the tone and improve a home’s appearance. Assess your situation and consider replacing your old door with a new door that the neighbors will notice, plus provides some long-term energy savings and allows you to sleep more comfortably at night knowing your home is secure.
